I just realized that the name for my app "Looking for Players" is a terrible choice. I can't even search for that phrase and find my own app. I'm trying to write a list of new names but given the following short description of what it does can you guys help me out?
It is a simple public bulletin system that allows players to POST information about games they are playing. Afterwards they can monitor RESPONSE to gauge interest. Or the can SEARCH for other players.

Hello
I just released v0.9.2 of URLy and it now comes with a simple API that can be used by other app developers to shorten a long URL via URLy.
So, if you are a developer and want to shorten a URL in your own app, but don’t want to go through all the hassle of writing the necessary code yourself, you can just pass the URL to URLy via an intent. URLy will shorten it with the service that you passed along and your app will receive a boolean to indicate whether the shortening process was successful or not, the short URL and, if any errors occurred, a detailed error message about what went wrong.
Why would anyone integrate URLy in his own app? Well, there are several situations in which this makes sense. For example, imagine you write a Twitter app and want to allow your users to shorten URLs. You could write the code to shorten the URL by yourself, or you could just pass the long URL to URLy. You can pass along the service you want to use (you can use about 20 services via URLy, like bit.ly, goo.gl or TinyURL), so you could even give your users the choice to use any service they prefer or provide a custom URL and / or user credentials so that they can keep track of their shortened URLs. And: The integration into your app is pretty much seamless. After calling the intent, a nice and small progress window is shown which disappears automatically after shortening. So, no annoying new window that the users will have to close – they never leave your app.
Take the following screenshot as example. The app in the background is supposed to be your app, the progress window is what URLy shows while shortening:
(sorry, I'm not allowed to post any images, yet, will update as soon as I can)
More information and a detailed code example of how to start the intent and receive the shortened URL are available on my blog in the API section. It's really simple and integrated in a few minutes.
General information about URLy is available in this forum or on my blog. Unfortunately, I still can't post any outside links, so please write me a personal message and I send you the links.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Can i get your opinion of this?
Let's say I'm building a new app and I'd like the business to take ownership of updating certain information.
One button will take the user to "Current Events" which may be updated quarterly. Could I have the business owner just modify an text file and load it to one of their web servers. When the user clicks Current Events, the latest text file would be downloaded and displayed?
Also, there would be a button for "Media Room" - would the smart thing to do be to embed a link to the videos that they are already hosting online?
thanks a lot for your input,
robert.
I'm trying to build an app for a school project that will locate items in a grocery store. For example, if I type in "orange juice" into the app, it will create a marker on a floorplan of the store. In this way I want to be able to populate a map with markers that correspond to items in a grocery list. Users can then walk around the store and swipe off markers as they pick up the items.
Does anyone know how I could do this? Are there any open source Android apps currently out there I could look at?
I feel like this would be a fairly simple project involving just uploading a .jpeg into an app and assigning coordinates to classes of items, like "juice" to {20,30} or something like that, but I have very little programming experience and am lost as to how to start.

Well, people normally do not get an answer if they ask how to do the whole app.
So try to find the solution yourself and ask the community if you've got more specific questions/problems.

Yeah I realize that I'm not going to get a step by step process... but I was just asking for general advice. Somebody suggested I use a .shp file and use an overlay with all the markers corresponding to the items, then create a pop up marker event for every time the user selects an item, which was helpful.
I'm looking for general ideas on implementation, that's all.

You could save the name and the coordinates to files using JSON which can easily be written manually.
Have a look at Google's gson library.
I am new to Android App development. I need some simple application ideas to practice. please give me some ideas. I just made Rock, Paper, Scissor game. So easy games like this will be fine(I think )
Build a notepad app that lets you write and save notes. Build it steps where you increase the difficulty as you go on:
Make an app with a textbox that lets you enter text
Add a save button and learn how to execute code when the button is hit. Whenever you encounter any problems or don't know what to do, use Google! There are a lot of other running the same path as you and me who have encountered problems. The solution is almost always a search away!
Implement a save function that saves the content when the button is hit. When the user reopens the app load the text file and put the content in the textbox. Tip: Use SharedPreferences
Time to add support for multiple notes! Start off by learning how to move between activities (windows), in your notepad app add a button labeled "All notes" that sends you to another activity when clicked. Use Google to finds articles on how to do this.
Once you've figured out how to move between windows, it's time to create a list with all the notes. To display a list you use ListViews, before jumping in to showing the actual notes create a mock list containing your favorite cars, cats, Justin Bieber songs, whatever! Once you get a hang of it, move on to the next step
Learn how to store multiple strings instead of just one. Check out JSON, it's a simple data structure that lets you store.. data. Tip: store the notes in JSONObjects in a JSONArray. The final JSON-string can be stored in SharedPreferences.
Once you get a grip of JSON, add an add button, preferably in the ActionBar, that lets you add notes. Save the new note in the JSONArray.
Replace the cars or cats that are currently shown by the created lists.
Voilà, you have a fully functional notepad app and you've learned how to: move between activities, store data, ListViews, find solutions with Google etc. Good luck!
What are you aiming for, eventually ? Do you want to be a game developer, utility developer, are you aiming for a job developing apps ?
That might help you decide what kind of test apps to make.
If you go for a game you could spend a fair bit of time dealing with the graphical elements and gameplay without understanding the basics... so before you do that I'd suggest getting familiar with the building blocks (Activity, Intent, Service, Handler, Looper and so on) first.

I started with memory game, you can go for it as well
Hello,
I've just published my new APP 1 day ago ( about 27 hours ago ), when I search for it by it's name it doesn't appear in search results at all,
BUT, when I search for it by the developper name, it shows up!
I think this has nothing to do with the android developper console, as I wrote a 1200 word description with the app name reapeated 5 times, I Added high quality images, I chose to target all countries, my app is targeting more than 6000 devices, the status of APP is PUBLISHED, as I can reach it by typing the developper name
So where's the issue come from? and what can I do to resolve this? I just want it to appear when I search for it by its exact name
PS : another app wich have the same name has 100,000 downloads, but at least I should appear on other spotsof search results, I don't know if this affect the visibility or not, but however, please help my guys
Common problem, it happens often. Dont know about the solution except get a better ASO next time.
Should I remove this app, and reupload it again with diffrent name? or should I just change it's current name? ( but this may affect admob or anything else)
or it's better to sit and wait for it to be ranked?
same problem
same problem here, please help us if you know how to solve this.
Thanks

I met the same issue when I first launched my app. What I have done is as follows
1. Use full package name to search. i.e. xxx.company.appname. If you find it, just give some time to wait
2. Fine-tuned some wordings in title and descriptions.
Even when i type my game title which is unique, no game have that title, but my game is shown up at the bottom of search page:crying:
It takes time for your app to rank up. Also another really important factor is the reviews. If you have many 5 stars you will rank well. My app took some weeks to rank #7, but the name of my app was sooooo common. There are like 200 apps with that name.
Yes you need some good reviews and ofcourse there is the time factor
I think you should promote your app... Mean you should do social networking, write blogs and press release and submit it onto the press release site
And then join the group in your social media sites and share your app there and see the revenue you get
But you should have good graphics screenshots and description
Just type link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=[YOUR PACKAGE NAME HERE] and it will open your app if it is on google market!
Just relax & wait. App doesn't show up in search result suddenly. You will have to wait for atleast a week or so for your app to appear in search results.
It works the same way in which Google website ranking works.
All you can do is -
1. Get more downloads on your apps
2. Get better ratings
3. Wait
Good Luck with your app!

I'm facing the same problem. It's been about 4-5 days since I published. How did you solve the problem? Is your app showing up now?
I just want to add link to my game review, so i do this useless post
I had a similar problem and 2-3 days after posted the game, and since then, if i search with the exact name of the app it appears first. If your problem persists and the name of the app is unique, use "Contact Google Play developer support"
