[Q] Help Identifying Notification Bar Icon - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My G2 just arrived last night from wirefly, so I'm still getting a handle on how to use everything. I love it, but some things are very different from the Galaxy Nexus I've had the last 2 years.
My home screen is still a mess as I try to identify everything, get my apps installed, and all that jazz - all while I'm supposed to be working. But if you can look past that -- I'm trying to figure out what the icon between the headphone and alarm clock icons is for. It's like two vertical rectangles with arrows pointing between the two. There's no such icon identified at http://eguides.sprint.com/support/eguides/lgg2/index.html#lg_g2_ug/status_bar.html.
I find the notification bar very cluttered.... I'm still getting used to the slide aside -- although I just "accidentally" figured out I can see my recent apps by tapping & holding the home button.
Overall I'm loving the phone so far! I played with it for about 4 hours last night, unplugged, and barely used 11% of my battery. On the Galaxy Nexus, I would have had a dead phone in that amount of time lol.

Yeah... Don't recognize it either... What carrier are you on?
Sent from my LG G2

It's the Direct/Android beam symbol. You can turn it on and off in the Share menu in the Settings.

Nice..

yup, I was just coming back to post that I'd found it. it's NFC.

[Discussion] Bell JK4

I figured this would be a good place to discuss the new Bell JK4.
I noticed after getting JK4 that there are a few changes (ones I didn't know existed):
- the default wallpaper is different
- Bell bloatware is gone (mostly)
- the start-up Galaxy S logo is slightly different...it has a shadow effect
- in recovery mode there is now a "Format Internal SD"
- the drop down menu brightness trick doesn't work anymore
- the data logo seems different on the top bar
The data symbol is gray now, you're not crazy The GPS icon is also different.
- TouchWiz lock screen now has the provider name on it
- Menus are a little darker blue
- The setting for what to do on USB connection seems to be gone, incredibly annoying
- back and home together is a screen shot
My phone is certainly very fast now but that could be the factory reset. Also 75% of Skype calls turn into static, very disappointing as that was the main reason I wanted froyo. But overall excellent rom so far, I can mass install apps without it hanging for once.

Pros/Cons
I've updated to JK4 as well and I'm quite satisfied.
1) Brightness setting trick - still works, but it seems you only have to drag the notification bar without having to pull it down a bit. This is good, as I used this feature frequently.
2) Bloatware - this still seems to be there, like the Yahoo search widget and other Bell apps.
3) "Car Home" and "Desk Home" - apps which are more or less shortcuts for apps frequently used in the respective environments.
4) Cursor Arrow - now there is a big arrow cursor thing whenever you click on a text so you can drag that arrow to get to a spot you want.
This is HUGE for me. This makes it so much easier to get the cursor to go to where I want it to be.
5) Copy & Paste Hovering Menu - along with the cursor arrow is the hovering menu which allows you to copy/paste. Again, dramatically improves the experience.
6) HQ Music Album Cover - Before, the album cover was low-quality even if you had high quality album art. Not anymore.
7) Video Player UI change - makes it look cleaner and nicer.
8) Auto-Rotation Shortcut - in notification bar
9) Pinch Zoom-out in Homescreen - sort of similar to Launcher Pro
Now many of these may not be specific to Bell's JK4, but I just wanted to throw it out there.
Performance wise, starting up apps feels faster, which may be real or conceived.
Downside seems to be that scrolling throw apps seems slower/laggier/choppier than before.
GPS is pretty much same for me. Works perfectly fine outdoors. Not so much indoors, though I'm not sure if GPS is supposed to work well indoors to begin with...
Sum up, an improvement over Eclair.
Gps won't find a fix for me. Ideas? I had cleared cache and did a reset once I installed jk4.

Stood outside for 2 min and got nothing. Walked inside and turned it on for one last shot...got lock.

I upgraded to froyo tonite and all is well so far but... I seem to be missing sseveral apps in my market downloads list even though they are still on the phone.
Anyone know why and how to fix?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Think I might have a solution to the missing apps problem. I had the same issue all my apps were still on the phone but most (all the free ones) were missing from the marketplace. The solution is simply to download any free app from the market place, install that app and then close and reopen the marketplace, all my apps were restored. Hope that helps.

FROYO killed my vibrant
Help! I just updated to FROYO on Kies... all good. After 10 minutes I started getting some process errors when running apps and suddenly (when trying to load Market), it died and started to cycle the white Samsung S GT1900M start screen, then black, then start screen, then black.... aaaaaaah! 3 button reset to get to recovery mode DOES NOT WORK (it had previously). Yanked the battery, no joy.
If I use 3 buttn rec using the volume down button I get the little android guy shoveling logo saying "Downloading.... Do not turn off Target!" but it has been sitting like that for 30 minutes.
Ideas?
Here's my list of pleasant surprises:
- Kies connection (MTP?) always works and disconnects fine. Before when I disconnected from Kies my phone would lose the internal and external SD's until I tried to mount/unmount when connecting USB.
- Overall very smooth feeling
- Calendar now supports bi-weekly repeating entries
- Gmail app seems to be much better. Plus there is an additional update to 2.3.2 that came out just today (Gmail 2.3 comes with JK4) that only works with 2.2 and 2.3 (Gingerbread). I had to download it from the Market.
I still haven't given the GPS much time but I have yet to get a successful lock. So far it is looking worse than JH2. I will have to do some more testing.
That's all I got for now without repeating what other people have said already. So far I really love the Froyo experience. I'll post more after playing with it some more.

Download mode only does something when connected to a computer. You can use it to return to stock using Odin.
My GPS seems to be working pretty well, I can get a decent lock outside and in the top floor of my house in 15-30 seconds, and I tested Navigation a bit driving home from classes and it seemed flawless to me.

Yeah, I was confused about that as well. But it's still there. They just moved it from Settings -> About Phone to Settings -> Wireless and network.
I guess connecting to PC is in the realm of networks. Anyhow, it's still there, and they now even have little android screens when you connect/disconnect.
Pre Froyo, the only problem I had with my phone (i.e., no lag w/100+ apps installed, GPS was perfect) was the wonky G-Sensor. After Froyo, it works absolutely PERFECTLY!! LOVE IT!
And I'm liking this thread. Anyone who has noticed new Froyo additions specific to our phones please post them! There was another post in one of the many Bell Froyo posts that had some but can't remember now...
Post hints and tips guys!!
Also, this is a general Froyo tip, but I love it: Chrome to Phone (Chrome extension, there is one for Firefox too) and Android to Cloud...love using these to send webpages, text, maps to phone and vice versa!
@jypyper
you have the internal sd card issue. The phone needs to be repaired.
I've noticed home page scrolling got smoother. App page scrolling on the other hand is slow and delayed. I've also had a few wifi errors now where the wifi doesn't kick in.

Anyone having any GPS lock issue or My Location based on wireless network issue? I'm using this phone unlocked on Rogers, and they're not working since the update...
GPS sees several sats every time I try it outside..like 7+, but it doesn't seem to be locking on to any of them. Again, I did not have any problem with Eclair...
I can't find the xda developers app invthe market place after the upgrade? Anyone else experiencing this?

I've noticed this as well.
I'm having a problem where my 'Back' button freezes and will not work. I press it and the light on the button goes out with ho haptic feedback, but it does not exit the screen. I can press it 100 times and it does nothing. Then, if I press the home button, it takes a screenshot and seems to unfreeze the back button...any ideas?

Ghosting/image retention problems, but only for a little bit?

The problem:
I will leave my tab unattended for several hours for reasons such as sleep or work and then come back to turn on my tab. I'll start typing or replying emails and then I will go to the settings via the notification bar. Then I see my keyboard being ghosted in the gradient background for about 10 seconds. I continue to write my emails and hit settings back and forth quickly to see if it persists, and it does.
But after a couple on/off flicks over the course of half an hour to an hour, the ghosting will stop....such that I write an email in the same fashion as before and then hit settings but I won't see the ghosting off the keyboard.
Had anyone experienced the same phenomenon?

I have also. It takes a minute or two then it fades away. My desktop widgets and icons really show up when I slide over to a blank screen.
I don't have this, and judging from other comments, this seems to be mostly limited to the IO/preproduction versions. Might want to go for an exchange.
Edit: but a few hours? I'm not sure.
I am having this issue but mine doesn't seem to go away. Actually my unit seems to ghost one image on top of another making it extremely irritating after some use. I have the retail Nexus 7 8GB unit and using it around 25% brightness.
I have contacted google with no response yet and a representative from ASUS who hasn't responded yet.
I got my nexus 7 yesterday and I can see ghosting on widgets which does not seem to away. Should I go in for an exchange ?
My nexus 7 16gb prurchased from walmart has ALL of the issues reported. I have light led bleeding on the top of my screen, I have touch screen unresponsiveness and now I am having ghosting issues.... how cheap did ASUS make this thing ?.? This is my first ever tablet and I am thouroughly dissapointed, I love Google but this is unacceptable

[Q] KnockON problems.

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing KnockON inconsistencies with their G2. Turning off always works properly. But if the phone has been idle long, it hardly will ever turn on the first one, two, or even three times I knock on it. Sometimes I have to tap it rather hard to function. I've tried different locations on the screen, as well as the center where the phone actually instructs you to do so. Then I tried faster and slowerand it makes no difference. The tips of my fingers are hurting now lol.
Thanks!

Surprised you're the first to bring this up, lol! Been watching this device closely on on youtube reviews on this device you can see it right infront of your eyes. Doesn't ALWAYS wake on double tap but does ALWAYS turn off, weird. Idk what to tell ya but yes it isn't just you...
Are you using the stock launcher?
I switched to Nova and noticed its very finicky for me ever since I stopped using the stock launcher.
Still on stock launcher.
I just tap it 4 times when turning on, no big deal.
The only time it fails for me is if I tap too softly. I notice that when turning it on, it does take two distinct forceful taps. It seems to register anything else as a touch. So, while I think it could be better, I don't see it as inconsistent. If it was too sensitive, it might end up turning on in your pocket.
I think it has to do with the motion sensor in the phone. Mine works fine if I just tap it twice while it's in a steady position (even in my hand), but when I'm riding my bicycle I can't get it to tap "on" most of the time (unless I stop). Tap off works much more reliably.
i'm pretty sure there's a deep sleep issue, but that's to be expected..once the process that controls knockon goes to a deep sleep, of course it won't work right away.
Tapping near top of screen seems to work much better.

Exactly.
Can't have both battery life and also expect the Knock feature not to go to deep sleep. I prefer to eat my cake.
Also, I like that it does not accidentally turn in my pocket or when gripping the screen in my hands, etc.
The Korean version has gotten a few updates to make KnockOn smoother, so you might not have that update yet.
Well, I have a VZW version so updates will not be plentiful lol. Knocking on it several times, rather than twice seems to work better. Thank you guys for your suggestions.

Maybe we should shake it a few times and then double-tap the screen. It would be like a Moto X/LG G2 hybrid!
I’m doing a study right now with this feature by recording the time and results. So far 3 quick knocks resulted in successful power ups 100% of the time (7 for 7). When doing 2 knocks (prior to the study) it was intermittent to the point of driving me crazy.
Come to think about it when you knock on someone’s door do you knock 3 times or 2? I always knock 3 times but the video reviews of this feature messed my thought process up with 2. First world problems I guess. LOL
I will report back with my results tonight.

Same for me. It says you need to either tap in the middle or top of screen. Anywhere else doesn't work as well.

Seems to work best if you tap where the lock screen widgets are located -- top center, but not at very top.
Anyone having a problem with the phone going unto deep sleep and then just shutting down?
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk 2
I have an explanation. I think this happens because when the phones asleep (screen and touch panel is off), knockon uses the motion of the phone, read by the accelerometer, to recognize that two-tap pattern and subsequently turn on.
When the phone and screen are on though, the mechanism happens by direct touch input and is much more reliable, so it should happen every time.
This would explain why in moving situations like riding a bike, or when I was trying to turn it on while it was on the bed, which probably absorbed the motion from the taps it doesn't work as well.
I did hear that the Korean version got a firmware update that helped, though who knows when we'll see that in America.

[Q] Did the G2 update or did I do something?

As of, maybe, four hours ago, the bottom bar on my Verizon G2 is now pink and includes a down arrow menu option for the drop down menu. (I can't give a screenshot because I don't have the requisite number of posts). Did this (Verizon) G2 just update or did I somehow change some setting? I honestly can't figure it out.
Well, my phone notified me last night there was an update available. Then at about 3pm it installed the update without me doing anything. I picked up the phone and saw a notification that in so many seconds the update would install, do not turn off phone, blah blah. No option to cancel or anything. Then it installled. Without my permission, and nothing I could do about it. It rather ticked me off.
I have heard through the intenet grapevine of one or two others having this happen. No way that updates should be force installed, and I've never heard of that happening before.

Its a push from Google I believe to keep android updated.
Most phones now pop up with no cancel with only OK and remind me in X hours but installing without consent seems right in that grey area.

Look in settings> display> front touch buttons. Under 'color' you can change it back to the original color and under 'button combinations' you can remove the pull down arrow. You probably just adjusted the settings in your pocket. I don't Think VZW would push an update that randomly sets your navbar pink.
I'm on VZW - haven't seen anything recently. Post screenshot?

Extend display time of notifications in second screen?

I've had my V20 a few weeks now and have enjoyed what it can do for me. I really like the second screen feature, but I do have one complaint about it:
The notifications disappear too fast. They pop up when they come in and by the time I flip my phone over and begin to read the notification, it vanishes. If I want to know what it was, I would need to turn on my phone, thus defeating one of the purposes of the second screen.
Has anyone found that this this something that can be adjusted? Presently, I think the display time is about two seconds. I'd love to bump it up to about five seconds.
Ideas, anyone?

So after using this phone for a couple weeks, I’ve gathered the second screen for notifications works the same way as “heads up” notifications work on normal-display phones without the second screen. I don’t think there’s any way to change it on stock, but if you’re rooted I’m sure there’s a prop you can change to make the heads up notification last longer.
I would say like the last post you need root at least
