Trouble transferring files to computer - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to transfer music and movies from my phone to the computer. I only have two options, the media transfer or camera transfer. I have an older computer so the USB 3.0 option is grayed out.
When I try to move files by dragging and clicking I keep getting that file is in use error. I have tried with Kies as well , but I encounter the same error. I am just trying to mount as mass storage like I have on the rezound and my old droid. Any suggestions ?

[Q] Cannot copy files from PC to Internal or Removable memory

I was previously able to copy files from my pc through USB to the transformer to both the removable and internal memory; however, this week I get a "Cannot copy file; device has stopped responding or is disconnected". I can still browse the files that are there and even delete them, but I cannot copy to either memory area.
I see in XDA and google searched that this error is usually fixed by formatting the drive, but with internal storage?? I dont want to wipe the memory, but I would like to transfer files this way.
I can connect external hard drive through the keyboard dock and transfer files. just not through the provided cable and the PC. I have uninstalled the drivers and rebooted the pc and reinstalled with no luck.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Bump. No ideas?
Btw. I have updated to 3.1 but I had this problem on 3.0
No one else had things problem?
Could it be the cheap ass cable??

if i had to guess, i'd just say the cable is bad, or you need to remove and reinstall MTP drivers.
I also have this problem, tried restarting the pad, doesn't work....
If anyone knows how to fix this it'll be greatly appreciated!
Most likely a windows driver issue, try connecting it to a different PC (to narrow down the problem: if it works on a different PC, then we know its a driver issue, if it doesn't then we know the problem is with the Tablet or the cable).

How annoyed are you by MTP?

I am thinking of getting the M, but it appears the device uses MTP when you connect it a PC. I am coming from ThunderBolt, and certainly enjoyed simply mounting the SD card in Windows, then copying whatever I wanted in and out. I even recovered some files that I accidentally deleted. I would also copy files to the phone for books (in random formats) , apps (apk), videos, photos etc.
Judging by the name I would guess you can copy MP3s to phone under MTP. Can you copy other types of files? Is there a way to just mount the internal storage in Windows? Thanks!

You should be able to copy everything, if you double click on the device in Explorer (on Windows, anyway). It should give you a display of all the folders on the device, I think.
But yes, MTP sucks. For whatever reason, it simply doesn't work with my current phone. Even on a fresh clean install of Windows 7, the driver will not install, and this is seen across multiple computers, stock ROMs and custom ones. I haven't been able to transfer data to or from my phone using the USB cable in ages. I can do it over WiFi, thankfully, and I can also just pop out the microSD card if needed, but MTP still frustrates me to no end.
It works with my tablet just fine, though, so it's the Motorola driver that's messed up.
Engadget review also reported a failure to install drivers for MTP on one of their test machines, despite best efforts to trouble shoot.
Is there even a benefit to MTP? To me it sounds like pure pain.

Why would you be annoyed at all, you can just mount the device as Mass Storage (just like the Thunderbrick) and move files that way. MTP is not an issue.

That's the answer I was hoping for, thank you! One last question : how do you mount the device as mass storage, using the standard Android dialog that shows up in the notification bar?
Please be patient with me, I don't have the phone yet.
Finally, my Thunder hasn't bricked yet, but it's getting close...

It simply gives you the option when you plug it in - you can choose to mount it as usb storage, or mtp.

Not anymore! Since the JB update, the USB mass storage option is gone! This pisses me off since I need that to connect to my vehicle's audio system. WTF would they remove that feature?!
Yeah. It makes me angry... I hate mtp. Gawd Google y u no usb mass storage?!? ¡¿¡

I've never had this problem -- until I upgraded to KK. Now my work PC will not allow me to install the MTP driver. Haven't tried yet on my home pc, but I am not optimistic. Come on! Some genius hacker dude out there has to have figured this one out by now!
Wi-Fi file explorer is my method of choice.

I do not get it. My Maxx mounts what appears to be MTP but when in click on the phone icon in Win7 (actually Parallels desktop on a Mac) the internal SD is mounted! Just like before. That is with 444. So is 442 way different on the older msm8960s?
Now on a Mac it is doodoo.
I can access both SD cards from PC without any problem in MTP mode. I installed the drivers while I was on JB I think

I used to use that on my old phone but forgot about it. I'll have to give it another go. Thanks for the reminder.

[Q] file transfer issue internal sd to windows 7

I have been trying now for an hour to backup the internal sd partition to 2 different windows 7 computers. It takes a long time for the "calculating time to transfer files" box to start doing anything. Once it starts transferring - the transfer stops mid way.
I have a folder called music that has about 3gb of songs in various folders. I have tried to copy this folder over and over and it keeps failing at 524mb every single time. I can't seem to figure out what is going on. Samsung drivers installed. Some of the smaller folders seem to transfer, but not everything in the folder gets transferred, though no error pops up.
I have tried both MTP and PTP without any success.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I didn't seem to have any problems backing up the external sd card whatsoever
Thanks guys

I had this problem with any file over 100MB on my Note 2 and GNex (both used MTP). It just seems like a fundamental problem with that interface. The only solution I found was to use DroidExplorer to transfer files. It takes a bit longer but I have never had it copy only part of the file.

I just use Root Explorer and a Flash Drive with OTG cable. Also, SambaDroid works well.

[Q] USB, not sure what this is called

I've tried googling this, I'm finding a thousand articles that aren't related to what I want to do.
I want to plug in my phone via USB and be able to see what is taking up so much room and then transfer those files using my computer.
I don't want to connect it as a media device or camera.
I can't remember how I did that before or if I'm thinking of my old skyrocket.
PS. I booted to recovery mode and plugged it in, it's not recognizing on my computer in recovery mode.
USB Mass Storage was removed by Google in Android 4.1.2.

With the MTP mode (Media Transfer Protocol) you can transfer all types of files
Check the current USB settings with *#0808#
I use the program
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/
But I guess that you can't use that for internal storage. Just USB mounted SD card.

Mtp problem. Cannot transfers big files

Hi. My problems is. Like I cannot transfer large files almost 17gb movie mkv format from phone to android. Then i join usb cable. Mtp saying that mtp is connected. But then i try to copy movie to pc. Showing error a device attached.... cannot copy. Small files like 300mg i can transfer.
Phone all stock. I have instaled latest drivers. And i tried usb debuging on/off
What the problem?

Are you copying the large file to a SDCard? If so, maybe because SDCard is in FAT format. I believe the max single file size for FAT partitions is 4Gig. Just a thought, never tried it
I have copying from devise memory to pc
