AT&T S4 to GPe S4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I love my s4 from ATT and find it to be the perfect size for display , power and battery life. However seeing ad the boatloader is so locked down I'm thinking of making the switch over to the GPe version of the s4.
Is it worth it right now or has this device now just become older and less likely to be used? Are there a lot of users of it? Can I still use a wireless charging back and a 64gb SD card? Is there root and themeing of the ROMs or just everyone stuck on aosp? I have the nexus 5 but I love my s4 a lot more.
Thanks.

[Q] Samsung galaxy s4 Active SGH-I537 CyanogenMod

Has anyone tried to load cyanogenmod onto the new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (SGH-I537)?
As far as I know, the only hardware differences between the S4 and the S4 Active are a slight dimensional difference, the camera downgraded from 13 MP to 8 MP, and the screen downgraded from Super AMOLED to TFT LCD. My assumption is that a build that works for the S4 should work for the S4 Active, but I figured I'd ask the question before possibly bricking my phone.
Also if an administrator happens across this, is there a plan to make a separate forum area for the S4 Active?
That's a custom Rom right? If so you can't, there is no way to add custom recovery to Active right now due to locked boot loader...

Even if u had custom recovery u can't use any ROM for the s4 on the s4 active the display driver r completely different as r many other things they r two completely. Different phones even if it did boot u wouldn't see anything from the simple fact no display drivers
I would doubt a lot of the device tree is diff as well like sound and stuff I haven't seen a teardown yet to see what's actually inside but no don't flash anything that doesn't say i537 s4 active ( when u guys get custom recovery )

I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. I've checked the threads here everyday waiting for a bootloader hack, or a version of Safestrap that would work on 4.3, but it seems this variant is getting no love from devs. Maybe if they can get a hack for the At&t Note III, it could be applied to the Active.

[Q] Switching from Sprint - simple questions

I am switching from Sprint to AT&T, as I already said in the subject, and I am looking for some QUICK opinions.
As most people probably have gone through this when buying their phone, I am debating on the S4 Active or the HTC One.
Upon coming onto here though, I was leaning more toward the HTC One because I like several things about it, more than the normal S4 and S4 Active, and because most of the S4 software features I don't really care about; I'm an EVO 3D owner, so I know how the gimmicks go. Nonetheless there are things that do attract me to the S4 Active over the One
I noticed the difference in activity for the S4 vs the One is SIGNIFICANT. ~13.5k posts for the S4 and ~3.6k posts for the One. Why is this? Are there that many junk postings\ROMs\etc or is it really just THAT active in this community? Is this section the same area to go to for the S4 Active device w/ AT&T?
- How is battery life? This is more geared toward the S4 \ S4 Active veteran users as I don't care how long your battery is lasting after you got your phone just a week ago lol
- How is NORMAL everyday use of the camera\camcorder?
- Are there significant amounts of SOLID daily drivers that are varying in style and operation? (ROMs)
- For the Active, how is call quality (for both sides), are there any other downsides to the Active edition vs regular S4 or HTC One?
Thanks

OK I'll try to answer most of ur questions there r more posts in the s4 section for two reasons 1 there r two devices using this forum the s4 and the s4 active 2 s4 has sold 20 million devices or so the HTC one about 5 million ( est not exact number from what I read )
Battery close is similar on all 3 devices for a lot of ppl the decidinng factor is the SD card and removable battery which HTC one has neither plus that power button being on top ( u had a evo 3d u mite be used to this )
Daily drivers there is plenty of good ROMs for the s4 and the HTC one
The active is really limited in this aspect since it has yet to acquire custom recovery exploit yet
The s4 has a boot loader exploit so u can use custom recovery as long as u don't update it out of the box mf3 ( plenty of threads on how to freeze att updater )
Out of the total amt of phones sold very few ppl actually flash ROMs a small percent of the android population the galaxy line has always had a lot of devs and ROMs cuz of its awesome specs and likability and ease to root and flash ROMs ( minus boot loader locking which isn't Samsung's fault its the carriers )
Hope this helps u and answers ur questions

Thanks for the fairly detailed response!
I have a couple other questions for you - is the cartoon-like UI their TouchWiz software?
Not to ruffle any feathers but I don't really like that aspect of it.
Also, when you unlock the bootloader and\or root, do you still get the annoying triangle upon boot? My friend had the S III and he had that problem. It didn't affect functionality but it was a bit tacky\annoying.
Yeah I have found AT&T to be root\unlock Nazis, but it seemed to be select devices they like to lock down. Not sure why, because you still have your plan that limits you lol
Thanks again!

TW (TouchWhiz) is samsungs launcher and I wouldn't call it cartoon-like, but if you think so there are alternatives such as launchers from the Play Store, or flashing an AOSP ROM for vanilla Android look and feel.
As far as unlocking the bootloader, there are working methods as to remove the triangle on boot, so don't sweat that.

[Q] S4 GPE Flash to TouchWiz Firmware

Hi All,
Sorry if this is a really stupid question.
I bought a Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition like 2-3 weeks ago and have been using it ever since. I switched from iPhone to Android and bought the GPE based on many recommendations that the stock OS is better.
But for some reason, I want to experience the features that come on the TouchWiz as well. After a lot of googling and looking around on the forums, I can't seem to find the solution.
Is there anyway to install the TouchWiz interface on my s4 and get all the features that come with the s4 (like Air Gestures, Smart Pause etc) ?
Youll never know until you try. We can flash ge editions to touchwiz but dont know about vice versa..

I tried flashing my Google S4 to stock samsung firmware.
For me I was never able to root the phone using the method for i9505 model. My phone almost got bricked and luckily one of my friends who is a CS major and develops apps for android was able to unbrick it for me.
I don't think a method exists yet, someone needs to work on this...
isnt ur phone like 19500? try using a TW rom from there/

Moving on S4 Mini buy

Hello to everyone,
I 'm thinking on buying S4 Mini LTE (i9195), to replace my old and precious HTC Desire, and i am a little conserned about the few rom variants that are present so far for the device by the community.
I don't see any miui, aosp, aokp or cm variants (PA, Android Revolution HD etc.) beeing for the device for the time beeing and I am worried if the hole android community is not going to embrace the S4 Mini. I would like to have your thoughts and your experience in general by using the device.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this matter is already discussed elsewhere.
I can give you my opinion, for what it's worth, as a new user who migrated a few days ago from Galaxy S2. I actually wanted an S4 but my finger slipped on ebay and I got an S4 mini instead. I've got a 64Gb SDcard because I carry a lot of media files.
Like you, I thought the custom rom market for the S4mini was a bit weak. But actually it's not bad, considering the few weeks since phone release - we have a way to root and a few 4.2.2 and 4.3 roms available.
First thing I did was to root and remove samsung bloatware with a script from xda. Then I reformatted my sdcard to fat32 'cos I want to be able to mount it in CWM. Now I'm going to wait tile some stable 4.3 roms emerge and CWM mounting of exfat disks is fixed before deciding to stay with stock or move to something else.
The phone is pretty good - a decent size, easy to hold and operate, decent screen, good camera. It's a bit expensive and the 8Gb memory is a pain but at least it has an sdcard slot and replaceable battery which many competitors don't.
tip: buy the i9195 (LTE) variant, I think it's more future-proofed than the others.
Good luck with your decision

[Q] question for developers

Hi guys.
I'm new to the forum and own a galaxy s5 plus g901f. I bought the phone new from eBay an unwanted upgrade. The phone was advertised as g900f so I was fairly happy until I discovered I was stuck on touchwiz as there is no support for this modal at all. I can't tell you how much I hate touchwiz and coming from nexus its made me miss aosp even more.
I've always rooted my devices but have little knowledge of making a custom rom. I wanted to ask the clued up folks, could I use a normal s5 aosp ROM and edit it to work on the s5 plus? Would it be quite simple as its similar with a few upgrades? Or would I need to start from scratch?
Any info would be great.
Mike
Best you can do is try the S5 plus specific thread.
