ok, i just noticed, the most previous update doesnt let you turn sense off...
I was about to make a thread on this too.
Bad news, but not worried because i'm probably gonna end up rooting this baby.
The question is why?
At a glance it appears they quite literally removed the Launcher.apk.
While this is probably a good thing for people who only use HTC sense, since it won't be running in the background..
It sucks for those of us who love android with no frills.
Cmon HTC the point of all this was openness and customization, where did it all go wrong?
If somebody could provide a changelog for the update, i'd be grateful
I disabled the Sense Launcher and using Launcher Pro....
does launcher pro make the phone faster? looking to speed it up a bit, but not sure i wanna root yet( did on past 3 android phones) just no roms look worth it yet. Wish we had a aosp 2.2 or fully working 2.2 or even stock 2.1
To be more specific he meant the stock launcher can no longer be used in place of sense.
Incomplete Changelog found:

Exactly.
It honestly seems like HTC has purposely gone the extra mile to lock us out. Perhaps for all of the emails regarding the 30fps cap.

If only that were true. Twice or more daily. I'm forced to refuse.
Why not post it in an email, instead just pop it up top. WTF
Non-sense
Is this another issue that HTC needs emails about because I definitely want the option to turn off sense..
The thread title is misleading you can disable sense. The problem is they removed the vanilla android launcher. But you can most definitely disable sense launcher and use a third party launcher.

Can you still do the following:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbXLsiWNqP8
I'm waiting for the EVO to ship with 2.2 & want to be able to remove sense. I know there is always rooting but it would be nice to be able to do it without concerns of voiding the warranty.
The point of this thread is that we CANT do that. Launcher isn't an option. They removed the apk.
What language should i say this in?
Well. Let's start writing those emails.
Sent from my Evo 4G
Anyway to reinstall that apk file?
What you should be saying is HTC removed the vanilla android launcher. You can still force stop sense and clear it as the default launcher. You just need to install another launcher. Some really good ones are available on the market. I think Launcher + is better than the Android one even better than the froyo one.

Ummm, you CAN do that, just reinstall the launcher or download a different one from the market. They didn't prevent you from using a different launcher other than Sense. Just go download Helix2 which is nearly identical to the stock one plus more, or Launcher pro which super fast. If you really want the stock Laucher just ask for it and someone could probably post it.
It has always been the way it is for me now... all they did was remove the stock Launcher. All you have to do is download a new Launcher and set it as default, very simple and I've had Android for less than a week.
Can someone point me to a download link for the stock launcher apk? much appreciate it

Probably because it is pulled out of /system/app
disabling sense and using the stock launcher was the only way to get my computer to see my phone. i tried launcher pro but my comp will not see my phone now, very very frustrating.
Well first, the new Market isn't on our Nexus S yet (officially), that's fine, it's just a UI update pretty much.
Now more seriously and more annoying, Google pushed out 2.3.1, that's great! BUT:
Whether you're rooted or not, there are missing apps on the Market because of 2.3.1
Some of the apps I use that I can no longer download from the Market are:
aFile, Fandango Movies, NYTimes for Android, PayPal, FiOS Mobile Remote
These are big apps, no reason they shouldn't be available.
I guess the issue is Google needs to input/enter/update their Market to "support" the new build of 2.3.1. ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS? You just pushed the damn thing and don't remember to update your Market with the new build??
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER GOOGLE! This is frustrating!
EDIT: ALL Copy Protected Apps do NOT show up in the Market on Android 2.3.1
Please go here and STAR the issue: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13514
EDIT: 1/5/2011-IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+1 i can confirm this

Have you tried editing your build.prop file to change the version fingerprint? I know this has been used in the past to restore "missing" apps to the market.
CALM DOWN
relax there, hot shot. you bought a pure android phone, early. You realize what that means is there will be glitches, patches, and rebuilds along the way. its happened before. the nexus one started off crappy with great potential and look at it now..its still top dog. so please be a professional with your purchase and know how to be a geek about it.

LOL I know, I've had a Nexus One. But still, really, this is a really stupid "mistake" by them, how can you overlook something like this? Shouldn't they have some sort of checklist they need to do before pushing an update to hundreds/thousands of phones?

Oh, I agree. Just trying to be helpful while we wait for Google to fix it lol. I've had to download the specific APKs and install them via AndExplorer for my missing apps.

Well, I disagree with your assessment in terms of the Market.
It's ridiculous that Google's flagship device with it's flagship version of the OS, sold to the masses through a big-box store like Best Buy should have something as basic as the build number not being recognized and excluding you from apps that should be available to you.
Such a small thing to take care of on their server end, yet overlooked. Just another one of those little things that a certain other mobile OS operator doesn't overlook that makes the rabid fanbois of it froth at the mouth and pant how much better their OS is.
Fed Up but glad others are in the same boat
I am glad that i came across your posts. I was about to throw the stupid phone out the window. I had to exchange my Nexus S today at Best Buy (still running 2.3). When i came out with my new phone, it prompted me to update to 2.3.1. I did the update and after I was done setting up my phone, I noticed that there are apps THAT I PAID FOR that are missing from the Market.
I am sorry, but whether this is a new phone, developer phone, I paid top dollar and I would expect that something as simple as ensuring that the apps that i PAID for our available seems pretty straightforward.
Until they straighten their stuff out, I am pulling my SIM and going back to MT4G.
Everyone calm down, they will show up in the coming days. The day that the Nexus S came out I couldn't find some apps, like NYT. But it showed up the next day or two.
Not too sure why people are complaining here. You bought a google development phone so you get updates long before other phones get them. Along with that, come issue, bugs, ...time waiting for 'others' to catch up.
By 'others' I mean, the people, companies, ect who release their apps. Surely google doesn't micromanage what apps work for what versions of Android. Or which ones show up on the market depending on your Android build, phone, or cell phone provider. My guess would be that is all in the app developers hands.
Either wait, or go about getting them on your phone another way. After all, you bought a google development phone, a pre-requisite for owning one should be wanting to tinker around with it. As said, you could probably get them to show up if you edit your prop-build. This happens at every new android build release....
confirmed...on 2.3.1 i lose slingplayer, thats a deal breaker for me. back to 2.3 for now

You didn't lose it, just get the .apk and install it manually.
Titanium Backup is really handy to have. You'll always have backups to all your apps for occasions like this.
I come here to get info on what's going on in the nexus world and all I find is stupid people *****ing about things they know nothing about.
Just because you paid some money does not mean you can act like a ignorant fool and *****.

Well you know what? Go ahead and update to 2.3.1 and you will have issues downloading apps from the Market, that was previously there. That's the point of this thread, and it's a valid one.
Yes you can go ahead and edit your build.prop, revert your rom, etc..etc.. but the FACT of the matter is, 2.3.1 DOES have Market issues.
I do have a right to ***** about this issue, because it's a simple issue for Google to fix and too stupid for them to overlook.
And for the other people saying "you bought a developer phone, you should expect issues and problems".. actually no, I don't expect that. It's sold to the general public through Best Buy at a retail location. I expect it to work properly. If suddenly tomorrow there's a 2.3.1 update and you can't make any phone calls, I can bet you all will be *****ing about it. And this Market issue is exactly the same.
I changed the fingerprint in the build.prop to show as it is the older 2.3.
I don't understand why Google is releasing an update before it allows it fully in the Market....
Attached is the build.prop i used.
It is from GRH78 only have the fingerprint of GRH55.
The ONLY line i changed in this build.prop is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3/GRH55/79397:user/release-keys
The GRH78 fingerprint is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.1/GRH78/85442:user/release-keys
You cash push the attached build.prop into /system (make sure you keep the correct permissions), reboot the device and the market should be fine.
Once Google update the market you can change it back.
Also if you change your build.prop down to 2.3 you'll get notifications on a 2.3.1 firmware update <facepalm>
Just change the fingerprint in your build.prop, download your apps, and change it back. Either that or wait for the app developers to update their apps, there's nothing wrong with the market.
Where is it for Nexus 7 2013? Will it be in the factory build? Is it going to be available for download separately from the store?
I find it odd that with all of the push to eliminate fragmentation it's not included.

Who cares what google search comes back with? Guessing/speculation/your mom talking about cats. The reason I posted here is because people who tend to know what they're doing come to xda for news/know-how.
Is the missing launcher really a bi-product of optimization and the always listening feature? Or is the GEL launcher going to be available on the store? Maybe you don't know but that doesn't mean that a developer or somebody else doesn't know.

Yeah. God forbid you should do a little research on your own. That's why everyone comes here, to spoon feed you information so you don't have to look it up yourself.
BTW: It was bing search. I thought it was quite witty to use bing to search for information about Google. I guess I'm not as funny as I thought I was.

Despite the reputation that xda has for people who know what they're talking about there's still you. Research would imply that there is information elsewhere that:
A. I care about.
B. exists.
4.4 for Nexus 7 2013 is a few hours old. I already said I don't care about speculation. Stop being an ass. The first thing I did was google this and when nothing was found I started a post. Did you do any research before you posted that link? Read the first four pages of results. Read the first 100 pages of results. There's no links to statements from google or any developer anywhere that has looked into anything. Instead there's a bunch of people who all regurgitate information, whether cited or not from The Verge, who also don't cite a source. They just say vaguely that Google told them. Right... because Google talks to The Verge and The Verge exclusively.
Let me change the question for you. Don't answer it. It's clear you're just a moron. This is for somebody else.
Is there really a hardware reason to exclude the Google Experience Launcher? Does anybody know if GEL really uses anything from the 800 or is Google just running a trial on the N5 users?
In addition, has anybody seen whether or not somebody has tried to take the apk from a Nexus 5 and run it on a Nexus 7?

Those first builds of 4.4 that came around when the Nexus 5 was launched actually had the whole GEL. the only problem was the keyboard would pop up when you went back to the homescreen, but other than that, it was working fine, so the only reason I can see as to why they would have left it out of the tablet would be to give the Nexus 5 some more bullet points on its feature list than other products out there.

I didn't take any time to tear into the build and tinker with it, but if there was any battery impact, it was too small to notice. I was still getting days of use. Even though the keyboard thing wasn't fixed in that build, maybe now that official builds are out and about, it can be fixed and sideloaded. I mean, all it was was a install of Google Play Services, the Launcher and the latest Google Search. Hopefully it won't be too hard to package those up and have them working soon.

As far as aesthetics go, no, changing the color of the notification bar text and icons wasn't enough. At all. Considering we didn't get the transparent notification bar or the new app drawer icon. I'm getting my fix of those two with Nova Beta though. Gets me all of those things, plus it's pretty stable.

Yeah I was more being sarcastic. Even though I was more looking forward to just having a bit more stability in everything I use the tablet for, I can't say I wasn't a little bit disappointed not having a very obvious "New Update Day!" feature to have fun with. And if Action Launcher wasn't the most overpowered launcher out there, I might use Nova. I just can't get over that Quick Panel. its too useful

Im using a 4.4 ROM on my nexus4 with gel and i tell you, dont havĂȘ battery issue, or fast drain...its quite normal in fact...
Enviado de meu Nexus 7 usando Tapatalk
So I just yesterday got my Axon 7, which I got shipped from China as it was cheaper. Little did I know that there were different versions of the phone and the one I received was the A2017, which I have been told is the Chinese model.
This is my first actual Android phone so I have fairly limited experience, apart from playing around with my mates Nexus 6P (which I found very easy and intuitive to use), so I have a few questions/issues.
My problem is that the software the Axon came with is fairly different to the "Paired down version of Android Marshmallow ... to be as close as stock android as possible." shown in most review vids, even ones with the 6GB Ram Chinese model - eg. youtube.com/watch?v=xNOql_uuOAM
Here are some screenshots of my phone - imgur.com/a/6pOlh
The main problems I have noticed are:
The lack of app tray.
No google service apps.
A bunch of random, for the most part Chinese (even when system language is English), apps that I can't uninstall or even remove off of the home screen.
Different, non stock android icons for all apps.
I mean it isn't the end of the world, but I would love to get the normal android experience on this phone is basically what I am saying.
Sorry if this is a dumb question/easy fix, as I said this is my first time owning any android phone.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Want to get official ota updates, if any in this stage of axons lifecycle. Would have flashed LineageOS but sound quality and loudspeaker bug holding me back. Until those get fixed, hopefully, sticking to stock Chinese rom for time being.
Ive tried searching, but cannot find if there is a ROM for the S5 that blocks all google back ground services from reporting on you, whatever info it may be. Ive seen the rumor of the company selling their refurb phones with a custom ROM on it, but at ludicrous prices, and cant even find them at all. Im going to be getting an S5 from a friend soon and want to start stripping it of the fluff and google services if at all possible.
I don't know of any custom ROMs that include Google services by default. Just don't install GApps.
OK, thanks.

Ive seen the rumor of the company selling their refurb phones with a custom ROM on it, but at ludicrous prices, and cant even find them at all. Im going to be getting an S5 from a friend soon and want to start stripping it of the fluff and google services if at all possible.

Ungoogled ROMs. No gapps! Awesome builds. I've been bouncing between the N and P builds for many weeks. Enjoy :good:

Pardon the stupid questions, im a Windows user and having to investigate the possibility of being forced to move if they dont fix Cortana's voice command (she only does searches when you give her a command) and Interests have been turned off for a while with no warning or reason, but there is a message on a 8.1 phone as to why.
Anywho, how do you load apps if you dont have Gapps/google services? Can you side load them, but where do you get up to date ones if not from the Play store? Is it worth using a free S5 or plunking for a One Plus 6T or 7 or Nokia 8?

Hi mate,
Try FDroid, Aurora Store, Yalp. I also side load from pure apk.
/e/ has its own apps store as well.
I use S5 devices. Cheap and operate great.
Many options :good:
