Nexus 5 Gamma Reverse Engineering App is out!
(This app will work on the common sysfs interface, so any kernel using this interface will be compatible with this app, not just my kernel)
Please download my public betas here:
http://faux.androidro.ms/hammerhead/beta/
Franco Kernel is also compatible here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508284
ALL Gamma registers are accessible with new APK!
@myfluxi Thank you again!
After hitting apply, it's best to turn screen on/off to see the results updated!
Please help decipher the meaning of these values and write them down in a concise manner so we can all understand what you've done and tried.
My TODO list for this FREE app:
Once things are figured out, I will add:
1: "Set On Boot" options to automatically apply the new values on startup (right now "set on boot" can be dangerous and lead to black screens).
2: Perhaps some basic profiles
3: Maybe other cool stuff if time permits
Min Value is 0 (NO NEGATIVES)
Max Value is 255 (Don't Go over it, it will break stuff!!!)
App Change Log:
1.0.6 - Initial release with RGB register access only
1.0.7 - full access to all registers
1.0.8 - add "set on boot" feature, add webview link to 2nd post below, enabled landscape mode.
1.0.9 - updated to latest kernel driver. add old version warning. add action bar for quicker navigation.
1.0.10 - updated to latest kernel driver. removed unused fragments.
1.0.11 - updated to latest kernel driver with stable sysfs locations!
Progress So Far:
Gamma Tabs:
columns => goes from left to right, so 1st position is most let and right most is 5th position
row => goes from top to bottom.
I got VERY CLOSE to ideal Gamma 2.2
Positive and Negative Polarity tweak added. This allows for greater RGB gamma control and balance!
Overall Color Gamma Curve (row 1 column 1 of RGB Gamma tabs) => 0 is highest, 255 lowest
Red Gamma Positive=> 0
Green Gamma Positive=> 73
Blue Gamma Positive=> 78
Red Gamma Negative => 0
Green Gamma Negative => 73
Blue Gamma Negative => 78
Gamma Color Brightness (row 2 column 5 of RGB Gamma tabs) => 0 is highest, 255 lowest
Red Gamma Positive => 100
Green Gamma Positive => 117
Blue Gamma Positive => 121
Red Gamma Negative => 107
Green Gamma Negative => 117
Blue Gamma Negative => 121
Overall White Point Brightness => 0 darkest, 255 brightest
Gamma white point, Column 1 => 30

Play with green gamma settings by lowering all settings by 6-10 points
Gamma 1 to 255/25/33/33/33
Gamma 3 to 10/33/33
Gamma 5 to 0/32/32
Gamma 20 to 200/33/6/0/6
Gamma 22 to 200/33/33
Don't remember if I modified Gamma 28
Gamma 31 to 200/70/60/55/55
I didn't touch blue gamma or red gamma much, modifying values to see effect now.

I think an explanation that this won't brick your phone but just require a wipe to fix a messed up screen world be useful to allay some fears. A flashable zip to restore to stock would be wonderful too. I'm gonna experiment nonetheless but others might need some reassuring.

There's a thread on this in the Nexus S forum, but I figured we could start one here for the locals.
Thanks to Tk-Glitch and times_infinity, we now have the beauty that is Voodoo Color available for CM7. Please share and discuss your voodoo color settings. Of course, everyone's experience will vary. This is just what works for your phone.
Here's mine:

Green: 2853085440
Blue: 2812181120

Blue: -33
It would be awesome if somebody that has a display calabrating device stick it on the phone and give use some "professional" numbers to start off at. This is done often in the HDTV world.

Yeah its a good start, they are similar to what I ended up with after an hour of messing around with the phone. The thing that sticks out to me is the screen clarity definitely suffered. If you get a picture that has tiny details like a black leather wallpaper that shows grain, there is a noticeable difference from stock to the above posted settings in shadow detail and image clarity. I'll keep messing around with it more and post later on.

Nope. This setting will be safe.
Also,
And just as an update, glitch's new kernel fixes this issue (beta tested atm); so you will be able to use any setting you want without the screen freaking out once he releases it.
Anyone have any better settings for our device? The nexus s ones look pretty good. Anyone do a pro calibration yet for the fascinate?

Bumping this to see if we can get anymore setups
I'll post my setup just in case anyone else finds it useful. I found that some of the settings posted were somewhat red/green when the screen was really dim (my dim setting is at 10), so I blued it up a bit. Things may not be all that different from stock, I haven't really compared.
voodoo profile v1
Screen RGB:
Red - 23111...
Green - 18713...
Blue - 23724...
Gamma offset:
Red -14
Green -17
Blue -18
EDIT: When looking at my gmail inbox (namely, unread messages), I still found the gray to be too red. If you agree, I've toned the red setting in SRGB to 21168...
Cleanest colors for me were as follows:
RGB Mulipliers:
Red=4294967290
Green=3354165120
Blue=4294967290
Gamma Offsets:
Red=0
Green=0
Blue=0
All the others I tried were just too red, green, or dark. These are perfect for me, try it out yourself!
--Changed my settings a couple days later..see this post.

Well, tried all the other listed here...liking yours the best so far..wish the app allowed you to TYPE in the values as well as the sliders...o well..
Anyone have the equivalent stock values for this(CM7 stock kernel)...I flashed the glitch kernel and was very put off by the ugly warm color scheme....what was wrong with stock colors any way...IMO they should have some Presets, like Stock, Cool Warm, Standard...kinda like they do for desktop monitors..

It will be fixed in the next glitch update. I'm about to post my color settings which have great vibrance in all brightnesses and color ranges, white whites and black blacks. I have tried just about every recommended setting and nothing has looked quite right until I spent some time making my own.

First slider's series concern rgb adjustement, the second change the gamma of each color
I'm trying to understand how it works properly
With these adjustment you can mix red,green and blu and try to have best looking possible color
If you set all color t same setting would be few useless, we must try differents level to have acceptable black and white, which are the extreme opposite colors
Maybe someone can help faster than me
As I wrote in the CM9 General thread, your settings look amazing erto90.
I tried messing around myself but I don't have the eye for this stuff.

That's made to avoid the green bug at minimum darkness and to try to keep acceptable dark greys.
Sure it's still quite saturated but anything with more gamma turn the grey too bright...
Though I have to say it's better than Voodoo hack, perhaps because the MDNIE are disabled (they lighten the greys and turn them red on Samsung roms).

It's a kind of filter that boosts particular colours, quite like digital vibrance on your PC video card.
I don't like this, it gives more banding and tint in the dark greys.

What exactly does gamma do?
I read somewhere that you can tweak gamma settings with no effect on battery life. So you can turn the screen brightness to the minimum and raise a color setting to make the screen contrast better.
It seems to be a popular feature in kernels, but what exactly do people aim to achieve by changing their gamma settings, I don't get it...
quoting myself from another thread:
dagaetch said:
2.2 is the value you want. As for why, see http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/gamma-correction.htm; basically, electronic images are biased a certain way, and gamma correction is intended to remove that bias. since screens are different, you need different settings to correct the appropriate amount to reach 2.2, which apparently became the industry standard at some point.

Thank You! I think that pretty much halfway answers my question.
Now I wonder the effects of gamma settings on battery, and what brightness/gamma configuration is more 'eye pleasing'.
Is there a general consensious on what that configuration miht be on the Nexus 4 or will I have to play with settings to find out my own?

There's a few presets that you can find on xda but in reality they'll all need tweaked a bit. Like the other guy said, every screens different.

No effect on the battery. This phone has an LCD screen with a backlight, so no matter the colours, the battery drain is the same. The only possible side effect is of your gamma tuning leaves your screen so dark that you have to bump the brightness, which could affect the battery.

Values for deeper blues/blacks and more of an AMOLED feel:

I don't know if the panels are different,but the following numbers give me brilliant white(cold)

This is working nicely on mine as i am on stock kernel (linux) and only have access to RGB
BIG difference, stock settings gives off a yellowish white (compared to my G2) and with this setting it matches whites exactly. i wish it were a bit brighter though.

Hello!
My first thread on XDA Developers.
I've been a lurker on these forums for some time having used various custom ROMs and kernels for Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 and now Android. I've mostly been a big advocate of Samsung gear until they decided to release the S6 with no storage expansion as this is what I looked for in any phone I upgraded to. This led me to buy the HTC One M9. The community so far has been great with custom ROMS and Kernels with the limited sources provided by HTC so I figured I would give something back to the HTC One M9 community.
Now it has been said that the HTC One M9 screen is not as great as it could be and is in fact a downgrade compared to the M7 and M8. This is mostly due to the fact the screen is calibrated very "cool" (8500k) temperature. With that in mind I just used my X-Rite i1Display Pro to get the white point to D65 (aka 6500k) and succeeded within a few minutes.
The settings I have are for the HTC One M9 UK EE gold/gold edition but I'm sure the settings can be used on other variants from other network providers in other countries too as it will at least get you close to D65 for more accurate colour reproduction on the screen.
I guess I've said a lot so I'll shut up and share the settings with you - please note I've used the colour control aspect of the custom kernels available to make the changes.
Ew that's crazy yellow lol. Try mine
I forgot to mention the rest of the saturation, value, contrast, hue need to be set to their default.
Considering my settings are not working on yours Reubenskelly1992 and yours are VERY blue, even more so than what I had out of the box on my M9, could it be there's a much bigger variation in screen quality?

Maybe we need to compare Serial Num mine begins with FA53HYJ and @skeet94 setting are very close to what i have found works
My blue setting has to be at 230 or it's way too blue
I found this to determine what the serial number means
http://droider.eu/2014/12/20/how-to-know-where-your-htc-phone-was-made/
mine = Taiwan 2015 / March / 17
What Kernel are you guys using?
Where do I find color settings? Or are you guys using any special app?

LeeDroid Kernel >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/rom-leedroid-one-m9-v7-0-0-rc1-march-t3068468
and the Color Control app > http://downloads.codefi.re/savoca/kcal
Kernel Adiutor in the play store also has these settings
Info: If you boot into Download mode and choose System Info you can find your LCD
Mine is LCD: TDI_RES_69338
I have tried many different settings taken from the forum. But I think the most similar to the setting of M8 (maybe not the preferred for many) is mine, for now. Try it, tell me what you think.
At what brightness do you calibrate the colors at? Does it matter?

LeeDroid added a Brightness patch here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60639310
It seems to have helped the look of my kcal settings. I turn off auto brightness and set mine too about 55% (2 clicks in the quick setting toggle)
These are my settings I use with ex app. Gives me a little more saturation and darker blacks
flar2 has added the color control for the stock kernel here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/mod-color-control-t3104598
you will still need custom recovery and root to use it
ViperOneM9 1.6.0 has added the RGB color control also.
To get everyone up to speed @LeeDroid added this feature about 2 weeks ago and their seem to be 2/3 different set of settings that bring the display up to the M8 standard.

Would you guys mind posting which LCDs each of you have for your recommended settings? I'd imagine these settings only work with specific screens.

On general these should work and it's a guideline so every device may be slightly different but probably just a little bit of tweaking
