Hi all!
I got my N7 2013 some days ago and I cant stop looking at the jagged videos it plays when using youtube and HD, even the best quality channels like MKBHD have big artifacts when looked closely.
I was expecting a quality that would blow me away but I found this:

The thing is that this issue is youtube related, because vimeo or the downloaded videos looks fantastic. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Some people told me that it is the new youtube apk, is any way of getting an older one without root?
PS: Sorry for the big image I cant post links, and wanted to show you the image in full size.
Thanks!
It has been a problem since the new YouTube app came out and they STILL haven't fixed it. You can try to get the old YouTube apk, or just use a 3rd party app like Viral or BSPlayer and "share" the video to it.

It's an old issue but I think it deserves a bump because it's just ridiculous how long they let this issue stay unfixed. What's the point of having crazy high resolution screens on the Nexus devices if YouTube looks like trash?
Bought a Nexus 7 2013 today and i too have this issue, btw tried to copy the link to Bsplayer...the quality wasn't better

100% sure man, wouldn't be posting it if i didn't test it more than one time. Plus, now i see on Xda i'm not the only one getting low quality on youtube with the Nexus 7 2013.
I have the nexus 7 and I haven't experienced any low quality or artifacts in my videos using the the stock you tube app. Maybe its been recently updated.

its not youtube app issue. it something to do with screen resolution. i experience resolution problems with other app and hd videos
Just installed "Viral" and the quality is great. So for me it's only YouTube causing the issue.

It's definitely the YouTube app not supporting proper scaling...

I totally gave up on the official app, as in only using it to share content on to Viral. It's like two more kicks and delivers true 720p. It even loads in that quality faster than the YouTube app, rebuffers less, plays in the background and has a pop-up function.
Too bad Viral doesn't support 1080p.
I dunno whether to laugh or cry at the fact that Google's own video service is incapable of playing full HD video on their flagship full HD tablet. Anyone know if it's the same on the Nexus 10?

Ok then let me correct, there is no 1080p for 90% videos on Viral. (in the one you posted there is, but it's minority)
Youtube: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0t4ni5kvcpu8h5m/ac.jpg
Viral: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oym1z6qltd2op98/Screenshot_2013-12-05-16-15-48.png
Pretty much every single video i searched, with "1080p" in title was available only in 720p @ Viral.

Hey. I'm new here Thought i'd see if you guys could answer a question for me.
I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what the resolution of videos playing in the nexus 10 youtube app are? I haven't actually got my nexus yet, but I imagine it's the same as my S3, where the player only has a "SD" and "HD" option.
Is the HD just equivilent to 720p? Or will it choose the highest possible resolution for the video? I'm asking this because watching youtube videos in 1080p would be really nice
Thanks!
I am curious too since it does not lt you select.
Pretty sure it's 720p on the app for HD.
I'll do a test when I get home later.
I've been wondering that too
Youtube app will render videos to Hd720p. If you want full 1080p you'll have to use the browser.

Thanks for the replies.
That's annoying Would be nice if google could update the app for tablets so we can view 1080p videos without having to use the browser.
Google should update the app and give you the option because the browser page is not good in my opinion slow laggy and hard to use with a touch screen.
Why make a Google product and then hinder it with low quality video stream. Honestly its one thing that annoys me with with his tablet how soft videos look from the YouTube app. It does not do this amazing tablet justice , lucky I have nice images to look at lol

Yup, 720p only.

If google says jump, youtube says how high. They are their subsidiary.
With the Nexus 10 and its supreme display resolution I guess we can expect an update to the YouTube app pretty soon. I expect a 1080p option.
Yes, 1600p would be nice but don't forget at this resolution/bitrate many people won't be able to stream it anymore, at least not in an acceptable time frame.

It was a sarcastic question hence the face. Thanks for joining in on the conversation.
Nexus 10 doesn't come with radio for data hence me asking as if his Nexus 10 did.
I hope this explanation clears things up for you so you aren't confused by sarcasm.
Yeah it would be nice if they updated the app, but I suppose 720p isn't too bad on a 10 inch screen anyway.
Youtube only supports up to 2048x1536 at the moment anyway. Hopfully 1600p youtube will come eventually
Youtube 720p looks surprisingly good on the N10 to me. If they add a 1080p option I definitely hope 720p is still selectable.

Well, let me answer with some numbers:
I have a really high quality video on my N10 (the Timescape Trailer), it's 1440p and 33.5 mbit/sec worth of data.
Even with high compression a 1600p video would be like 10-20 mbit/sec or around 40 mbit/sec in very high quality.
I've been searching for a way to record my gameplay on this tablet. There doesn't seem to be one that actually works properly on this device Anyone figure out or found an app that actually works? I purchased Screencast video recorder, but its frame rate is in the single digits and the color turns out inverted I know this device can handle it. Could be compatibility issues.

Here is a video to show the inverted color(Reds are blue) and slow frame rate. (Per request)
*This was recorded using stock kernel. Normal resolution. Frame rate at 30fps. (Though running benchmark from the app shows 5fps it could handle!) Tried it with franco kernel r8 but all it did was record the last screen that it was on before recording started and did not record gameplay just frozen. Also during recording it did affect my gameplay. It had some lag. I'll adjust the kernel and see if performance mode will fix that.
Update:Changed to Performance using setcpu did nothing to remedy the gameplay lag while recording

How does it perform with "normal resolution" selected instead of "high resolution"? Most people don't need the gameplay video in 2560x1600... Also, if the frame rate is better with low resolution (it surely is), could you send me a recorded video (no more than 10 seconds long)?

It does work fine on my SGS3. But the problem is that its such a small screen when it comes to gameplay. I'm used to the larger screen. I did try Airdroid because it has the ability to record the tablet screen from the PC but it was not smooth at all. It had worse frame rate.

From the volume of posts on this topic, and from the number of screencasting apps on the play store.....looks to me like a lot of people with N10's are filming their screen via their cameras
Would love if one of the Screencasting devs updated their software so it's compatible with the N10
Same here with my Note 2. The reds and blues get inverted. But framerate is fine.
EDIT: Does anyone know how to invert the colors back to normal using Sony Vegas or even Photoshop? It seems like it is only the reds and blues that get inverted. Link to my short video: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/96857758/red&blue.mp4

https://play.google.com/music nice big button that says Upload Music. Click it.
You can upload upto 20,000 songs in any quality rate. Saved my ass twice from HDD failures, restored directly back to my PC from my Google Music account plus the benefits of being able to stream music to my N4 wherever I am. You can also pin music from the app so that it's preloaded if you need to save on mobile data.
I can say it streams just fine even driving at high speed .

Quick correction, it uses some space as cache but you can quickly clear it whenever. Useful since you may only be listening to a lot of the same music week to week as far as saving data goes.
Ummm even with this not checked??

You can either store music on your device, or stream it from a service like Google Music. You either use device storage, or you use data/wifi to stream it. There are no other options. This is why people value unlimited data plans so highly.

I would heavily recommend OGYouTube.
It is exactly the same YouTube app you are used to (regularly updated), with added functionality for Download, background play, screen-off play, etc. It can even put your video in a small resizable window and play it on the side while you multitask.
P.S. Also has a setting to show the 4K video option

At least I think it does, because UHD option doesn't show up on my Z1.

Sorry, seems UHD is not available on Z5 Premium:

maybe we can again edit our apn's.....wouldnt that be a nice!
Hopefully it fixes the sluggishness my phone experiences at times. Touch wiz is so damn heavy. Stupid ROM is 8gb when stock Android is 200mb most. Lol.

Nothing here yet. Has anyone installed it?
I got it. It includes the April security patch
From what I can tell the phone seems smoother. Placebo effect maby. Battery Seems improved.
Has anyone updated directly from pb5 to pd3? Would like to keep the Hotspot.

I got the update. Still can't edit APN. And also, not sure if I'm alone on this one, but I lost the ability to watch HEVC 10bit videos with the native Video player. It was the only player that actually used the hardware decoder, so the only way to pay those videos without a stutter. now just greets me with an error message.
Anyone else on APD3 having this issue?

On the new update, can someone test this for me? Set Location to GPS Only for a few hours & then check Battery Usage for Android System. Is the GPS constantly on for almost as long as GPS was turned on or was GPS active for just a few seconds or minutes?

I can report that if you edited your APN settings before applying this (and the prior) update, the update doesn't wipe out those changes. WiFi tethering still works for me.
Just switch location to GPS only. I'll report back what I find later.

Can you provide a link to an HEVC 10bit video? I'll be happy to see if I can play it, or not.

Nope, can't play it. Clicking on a link on that page tells me a I don't have an app for that kind of file, and copying the file to the phone and then trying to play it gives me an error.
I left the GPS only in for 30 minutes or so. Reported 32 min.

Battery life still sucks for me on this update. I have barely used my phone, took it off the charger at 10am, sentva few text messages, surfed the web for a few minutes and my battery is down to 55%
