[Q] Root counter? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I were to buy this phone and root it so that I can restore my backed up applications, is there any way that I could reset this phones apparent 'root counter' to make it look like I haven't rooted, in case of warranty emergencies?

[Q] Factory reset but stay rooted

I rooted my HTC EVO 4G with Unrevoked. Now I need to factory reset the phone but I still want it to be rooted? How do I do this?

What's your goal in factory wiping?
If you factory wipe a rooted phone I believe it will wipe out the ROM and your data and it will only boot to your bootloader.
Factory reset never unrooted my phone. I think root stays unless you want to unroot on purpose.

I'm selling it. I want to sell it rooted. I never installed a custom ROM, I kept the stock HTC Sense ROM.
Just hit factory reset in settings?

If the phone is rooted and you hit "factory reset" I'm pretty positive it will wipe everything including the ROM.
Why not just go into the recovery, wipe /data /system /boot /dalvik and /cache and then flash this?
Just wipe and flash a stock ROM. Boom.
Edit: Words. ^^

Factory Reset will not remove the root. The superuser app as well as the root was flashed into the phone's factory state. Resetting only wipes user data, not system files, including the superuser app.

Now now, I didn't say it would remove the root.
All factory reset does is reset everything back to when you first installed whatever ROM you have. It basically erases all the data and settings. It won't delete the rom, nor will it unroot you.

It wipes /data which is why I suggest he does http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15091602&postcount=5 so the whole thing is clear of any of his data and is running completely fresh.
Unless the OP has anymore questions, not to sound like a moderator, the thread's kinda over with.
So, just to be clear, hitting factory reset in Settings will delete all apps I downloaded and all data & settings for both downloaded and system apps then re-add the system apps plus SuperUser for root privileges?

It'll do all that but it won't re-add anything, the superuser app is in the /system and it wont touch that.
Best thing to do is the post where I link you.
Factory reset will leave you with the phone exactly how it would be bone stock. It will have root, but wont have Superuser. You should just flash Xhausx stock ROM and be done with it.

Yes it will, superuser is in the /system partition.
I pulled my skirt down and just did it (Factory data reset via Settings). Everything was deleted, system apps plus SuperUser was still there and the phone is still rooted (tested and confirmed). Thanks everyone!

SM-N900W8 stuck on 4.4

Hi,
I was on 4.3 and using this firmware N900W8VLUBMJ4_N900W8OYABMJ4_N900W8VLUBMJ4_HOME.tar with Bell.
I decided to upgrade to 4.4 (had NO clue at the time that the ability to downgrade was somehow removed by Samsung-- I guess I should have expected some funny business especially after seeing all this Knox crap).
Anyway, I backed up my apps with titanium backup, nandroid image, Kies 3 backup. However, after updating to 4.4, I wiped the data using the stock recovery (was so used to wiping using CWM/TWRP that I figured the stock recovery would only wipe the "data" folder--AS IT SAID SO), but instead it wiped my entire phone clean. Lost all my applications, my titanium backup folder, pictures (tho I guess I have dropbox so not too bad) and music. I figured that it's not so bad, I still have my nandroid backup backed up on dropbox. I could use that to recover all my stuff.
But I don't know how. I mean i can't downgrade to 4.3, and isn't that the only way to restore a nandroid? ie to be at least on the same Version of android.
I could try recovering it as is (currently on 4.4 stock), but I don't want to brick my phone. Could really use some advice on this. Thank you.

If you updated to 4.4.2 using some official way, you cannot downgrade back down to 4.3 without having KNOX 0x1 tripped. If you followed Oogar's thread, then you still have hope as you would have flashed a "happy bootloader", but I think you didn't do the latter.
Yes, you are correct, you cannot restore a 4.3 nandroid on a 4.4.2 device as they have a different partition structure, and once you press restore, you will brick your device.

My Note 3's KNOX's already been tripped (yea long story.. didn't realize). Is there still a possibility to recover my data using that nandroid backup? Or to downgrade anyway?
I'm not aware of Oogar's method, I just updated via ODIN and that PDA file from sammobile.
EDIT: Is there a way for me to check if I have the "happy bootloader" or the dreaded NA6 bootloader?
PS: Thank you for the help.

The bootloader can be checked using some tools on the play Store, I believe if you search Phone Info on Play Store and pick the one for Samsung phones with Star icons next to it, should tell you your bootloader version.
If you updated officially you should be on the NB7 bootloader.
Anytime, just remember to click reply back so I get a notification

Ok, it says NB7 on the PDA file which I flashed so I'm guessing that is my bootloader. Not sure what do about recovering my data though. Any way at all? Or should I just give up and start from scratch?

yeah like a factory reset
bump!
Galaxy S3?
If you want to return to factory settings the best way is to do it via recovery. You can do this regardless of whether you have the stock recovery or have flashed CWM/TWRP. Just be aware that factory reset in the stock recovery will erase your internal SD card so you need to backup anything on it you want to keep. I would also remove any external SD card you have installed to just to be safe.
If you have CWM/TWRP then a factory reset shouldn't erase your internal or external card. But in both cases you will lose any user data you have on the phone. So things like text messages and installed applications will be lost. I would suggest a backup with the likes of Titanium Backup or, even better, do a Nandroid backup if you have CWM/TWRP installed. You can then use an application like Nandroid Manager to restore any aspect of the backup you see fit afterwards.
And this really should have been posted in Q&A.
Do i clean install with odin. A clean install is always the best.
Btw you're in the wrong thread my friend
Yeah i realized i was in the wrong section after i posted it sorry, okay when you say recovery what do you mean? cant i just restore it through samsung kies ? and about the titanium backup....whats wrong with backing it up with samsung kies also? and i am not planning on rooting the device after i restore it so titanium backup wont work ?

- If you do factory reset, the root still remains and you can restore apps using Titanium.
- If you restore all partitions, you will lost root and Titanium will not work anymore.
Ok, so i want to get rid of the root, i want to restore completely and update my device without having root at all, but i also want to be able to restore my old messages mail accounts ETC? what do i have to do to accomplish this...

Not sure about resetting binary counter, you can try if flashing via Odin is not success.

[Q] Galaxy S5 LAG after Lollipop update

Hey guys, I have updated my S5(f-version) from kitkat to Lollipop via KIES3 and it was working alright.
I thought rooting it would make it better, but now I feel it's just worse...
But now my applications constantly crashes, for an example - when recieving call the app crashes making me missing the call.
Opening gallery takes up to 7 seconds, and other apps 2-4 seconds (if not more). Which is getting very frustrating,
I dont know how to downgrade to kitkat, but I would love to do so. And then install XPOSED
Things i have done
Cleared partition cache
freeing memory
restarting the phone
unrooting
rooting
This isn't because of lollipop. The problem is something your doing or your device-
Either you did something wrong when rooting or something else.
What method did you use to root the phone?
Did you wipe data?
Make a backup in recovery and wipe data, dalvik, cache. Reflash, root and report back.

I had the same problems before rooting it, and thought rooting it would make a difference.
I followed all the steps correctly
If you updated from KK to LP, it is highly advisable to factory reset the phone after the update, KK leaves behind rubbish files that cause all sorts of problems, factory reset solves a big number of them

No need to unroot first, but you might need to root again after
You should be able to factory reset from TWRP too - through phone or TWRP will work fine

Like detection pointed out, you don't need to unroot to do a factory reset.
Android Recovery = very basic and limited recovery.
TeamWin = everything the above one has plus lots of more useful functions (same goes for CWM)
When I said wipe data, cache and dalvik cache I assumed you knew what that means. Judging from your reply you don't. It means to do a factory reset, in recovery (whether it's TeamWin or whatever, doesn't matter). Be sure to make a backup in recovery if you don't want to lose data like sms messages etc.

Urgent Ultra power saving issue!

I have disabled the Samsung keyboard...
I use fingerprint for unlocking
Today I used ultra power saving mode, and rebooted my phone.. When it called back on, fingerprint doesn't work first login so you have to type your password, but it seems that my 3rd party keyboard isn't one of the apps allowed, so I cannot unlock my phone!
Trying to turn off ultra power saving mode, or going to settings, requires password!
Any ideas what I can do without wiping the phone?
Not rooted..
Would appreciate any suggestions!
Nice double posting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/urgent-issue-t3373461
As for the issue, why the f*ck would you ever disable Samsung keyboard? It literally doesn't use any battery if you don't have it selected as main keyboard. Looks like you're stuck here if you're without root, next time don't ever disable native keyboards on your phone.
I'm on my wife's phone, edited title and it seems to have reposted...
I have to admit that I don't remember disabling Samsung keyboard, but assumed I must have done since it isn't loading.
Normally I root my phones, and would remove anything I don't use, but not sure with this phone
Anyone with anything helpful?
You have to factory reset. Wipe data and start again. Hook it up to the computer and get everything/anything you can

Your issue has nothing to do with either. If USB keyboard isn't an option or didn't work, flash TWRP with ODIN then do a TWRP backup. Factory reset, then you can use some apps to selectively restore desirable data such as SMS/MMS, Telegram, etc., from a TWRP backup file. Can't remember if apps like TWRP manager require root or not for the restore functionality, most likely they do.
Damn that sux
Happened to me. I had to do a full wipe.
I don't know why it happened because i did not disable Sam keyboard although i installed Google keyboard and it was my default one.

For future reference, no, ODIN does not require root. To flash TWRP from ODIN, then boot into TWRP to do a backup, does NOT require a root. It requires an unlocked bootloader which 930F has out of factory. Selectively restoring stuff from TWRP , from inside a booted system (not from TWRP) may or may not require root depending on the restore app or the item being restored.

Frustrating as only phone I've owned where I don't have root, and lost all data when I reset
This just happens to me... Try to get USB otg and use USB keyboard..... Type your password very fast when loading, before ultra power saving mode launch... It's work!

flash TWRP through ODIN, go to file explorer, /data/system/locksettings.db delete that, /data/system/gatekeeper_password.key, delete that too, reboot and ur done.
