Terrible battery life? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I just picked up my s4 the other day. I traded my iPhone 5 for it. So far the battery life has been atrocious. I'm running on the stock rom with root and regionlockaway so I can have my phone unlocked for tmobile. I'm running the mf3 update. Here's a screenshot of my battery usage. My brightness is generally all the way down or on auto.

If you can try out "wakelock detector" it can tell you why your phone isn't going to sleep. Perhaps you gave a rogue app?
Edit: betterbatterystats might be able to help too. It's fee for xda members I believe.
Also, you mentioned that your phone is new? Give it a couple more charge/discharge cycles to even out.

My phone wasn't brand new. Just a few weeks old. I traded it to someone on Craigslist for my iPhone 5. And I'll try those apps and report back. Thanks!

when i first got the phone, i ran stock TW but rooted with few xposed tweaks for a few weeks, battery life was... meh.. unplug at 7am and NEEDED to plug back in by 8 or 9PM.
when i went to a custom kernel, battery life improved greatly with stock speeds, and undervolting all steps.

Here's what wakelock detector says

Not terribly familiar with safestrap and the s4. (Had a tmobile s4 which doesn't require it). I'm extremely familiar with android however. What's the process to install safestrap? My phone is already rooted. Also what's the kernel with the best battery life.

Not sure about safestrap since I have an I337M.
The best answer I can give you about a kernel is to try them all. The best kernel is almost always subjective.

Got safestrap installed. I'm somewhat familiar with it as I used it on my Droid RAZR. How do I install a kernel on my s4 with it?

You can't install a custom kernel because you're on MF3 no exploit has been found to be able to bypass the bootloader or unlock it.

AT&T and Verizon have locked down bootloaders. When the OTA install starts, it blows a Qfuse making it impossible 'at this time' to downgrade back to a previous build.

No. The bootloader is locked, and does not allow downgrade. Once you are on mf3, there is no going back.
No. It is impossible to downgrade anything. Read up on it. There is more in depth stuff than what I said. As of now, there is no way to downgrade, install a custom recovery, flash a rom, use Odin, etc. Only root is possible.

If anything goes wrong with installing the mod you may be screwed. Also, saying you want to "get rid" of bloatware leads me to believe you want to delete. Don't, just freeze them.

Keep your eye on this app called Safestrap by Hashcode. It's being developed for Verizon S4 but most likely will work on AT&T's as well. Read more on what it is and other cool things about it here, be sure to read thoroughly so you fully understand what it does haha.

one you probably should state if your rooted or not. are you using this bootloader hack http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292157
and other things might be helpful. I've flashed most of the 9505 tw ROM 4.2 and had no problems with them have not tried any of the leaks or build off the leaks read that a few where having issues with wifi. I would probably just ask in the 9505 for if anyone has tried the leak.
There are a couple custom recovery (cwm, twrp...) flashable roms for the 4.3 leak.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2467693 from T-Mobile section based on the first leak and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2372286 in the international section based on the second leak

I am not mf3 so already running Jamison's 4.3 from TMO forum--running great--I love it
well maybe in a few weeks for the US variants. but I would not hold my breath with att and verizon they have to make sure the bootloader lockdown will be enforced and they can put all of their bloat. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_...g-galaxy-s4-gets-official-android-4.3-update/
We need the source posted so that devs can mod the stock kernel. Not anticipating an Att release this month for 4.3
Still more interested to see 4.4 drop for the 9505g. Looks like that was really what key lime pie was going to be.

Update to MF3 or stay at MDL?

Been out of the game for a little bit due to a broken s4 but my question tonight is should I just stay at Rooted MDL or update to MF3?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Don't do it
I STRONGLY recommend for you to stay at MDL, because as of this moment, there is no bootloader unlock for MF3, so that means no custom ROMS or kernels, unless you want to use SafeStrap. If custom ROMS don't matter to you, update. But remember, if you get TWRP, you can always flash an MF3 ROM and get it, while keeping your bootloader unlock. Try it. If you don't need custom ROMS and other cool stuff, update.
Lol just read about it and I defiantly do not want to update thanks for the help. So I'm safe to use any rom in the development section

All the above suggested kernels plus AK.207.KK and hells-Core-b42-t4. Each of all the above is a GREAT kernel.
Flash any of them, configure it to your own preferences. Try it for a few days or longer. From the assessment (performance/battery life/smoothness/etc) you'll determine which kernel works BEST for you.

I'm glad you like it, there are a few quirks with using a s-cover but it's pretty decent. Enjoy.

Rick, thanks for making this ROM, I really enjoy it and since I don't use an S-cover I have almost no issues with it. I did have to restart my phone today when the auto brightness wasn't working, but I like to restart once a day regardless and it had been a few days since my last one.
Thanks again for your work and I can understand and appreciate the time it would take to maintain a ROM.
