[Q] Canadian Bell Galaxy s4 bootloader locked - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey @ll. I've just gotten a new SGH-I337M (build number JDQ39.I337MVLUAMG1) from Bell in Canada. I've been trying every root method I can find on the net and they all fail. I started with motochopper running from linux and eventually tried a manual method running psneuter on the device and no go. Tonite I've gotten a winblows vm going and tried odin. FAIL!... I've finally noticed (with a magnifying glass) that when in download mode, the last line of the tiny text in the top right says: WRITE PROTECTION: Enable. From what I've read, I think this means it has a locked bootloader. Is this right? Has anyone heard of this happening with Canadian Bell phones and is there any way around it?
Thanks in advance.

I just checked my download mode.
It says the same, so I think there not locked. But I can flash whatever I want.
Did you try ctautoroot from chainfire?
Or try updating your driver for samsung

Yeah, cfautoroot was the latest one I tried which uses odin. The phone was recognized in the vm and connected to odin just fine so I don't thing using a vm is the problem. As I said, I tried a few methods on the linux system with the phone directly connected as well and got the same results. Everything seems to be working until the point where something has to be written to the device and it fails. Even a manual method where psneuter is transfered to the device and run from there and it won't work.

Well the only thing I can say is try a reall windows machine not some windows vm

Thanks anyways.

Now can anyone at least tell me how to determine if the device has a locked bootloader?

if it is a 337M (with the M) it does not have a locked bootloader. PERIOD

Well thats encouraging. It does have the 'M' but several attempts at rooting with recognized methods have all failed. What else could be the problem?

According to the CFAutoroot thread, MG1 should work just fine. You might want to go to that thread (or go back to it) and make sure you read / re-read the entire thread to make sure you are using the proper procedure. Good luck.

did you download the NEW cfautoroot? it was updated for our phone last month or so...

Thanks for the reply gotshoaib, but I need more info. The first code does nothing on my phone, the second brings me to a 'ServiceMode' screen. What settings should I have here? The third brings me to 'USBSettings'. What should be the settings here?

Well success at last! I allowed the new update to 4.3 (MVLUEMK6), used the CFAutoRoot process again and it worked this time. I have no idea why but it did.

I just purchased an S4 BELL SGH-I337M which was on AMG1 when I received it. I flashed TWRP on it and then decided to install stock firmware AMDJ. Then I flashed GUMMY ROM which is pre-rooted. Since I did all this flashing, that also proves it is unlocked so I will have to go along with TRusselo. It is unlocked. :good: I won't say period though, BELL and canadian carriers could change their minds and start locking them.

I377m is not locked. No Canadian handsets are. Locked boot loaders seem to be an American phenomenon

Mexican version is also i337M. Is its bootloader locked?

I rooted my i337m with CF-auto root and no problems what so ever.
Currently using Philz touch recovery 6.00.8 and Slimbean 4.3 build 2.2.
Everything you need is here on xda just need to look for "Samsung latest drivers, cf-auto root, Odin 1.85" plug your phone in and root

Root AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337(Not SGH-I337M) and Android 4.3

Trying to root SGH-I337 (not SGH-I337M). I found a few different chainfire downloads, but non of them seem to match my model perfectly. I tried "SuperSU-JWR66N-S005-130625-1.41.zip" which I found on a YouTube video guide, but it had errors during update and failed. Fortunately, It did not brick my device.
On this site "autoroot dot chainfire dot eu/", I found this file "CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m.zip", but it says this is for model SGH-I337M. Which I think is a Canadian model (but not sure). I don't have a "M" on the end of my SGH-I337 model name.
Can someone please point me in the right direction...
Which file should I be using and where do I find it?
Check the stickies at the top of this forum. That's all I'm going to suggest.

It will work trust me. Mj6 was a leaked att version of 4.3 then the official was mj9 before they stopped it to fix bugs and brought out mk2. It will work follow that guide. Download the mf3 emergency files flash via odin sideload mf3-mj9 then mj9-mk2 and you'll be back. Follow the guide step by step or follow the updated one ted77usa rewrote.

I337 firmware I337UCUEMK2 root?
All,
I installed the Samsung Drivers and then completed this video: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2283918 which had me use the motochopper tool for the Galaxy SF. It looked like it completed successfully and rebooted my phone, but the device is still NOT rooted. It didn't work and I am not bricked either (whew!!)
hovax615,
I'm sure you realize the importance of me getting correct and not bricking my device. Please advise when you say "you'll be back", what exactly will I be back too? to my knowledge I'm already in the beginning and phone firmware has never been changed, because my phone is still not bricked and not rooted. I have never loaded MJ6 (whatever that is). My apologies for being a noob, just trying to understand and do this safely without bricking or messing something up.
It's late for me now, and I will read any replies and continue this journey in a couple of days, perhaps tomorrow.
I really appreciate your help. Please advise.
Thank you all

I337UCUEMK2 Root? (My device is NOT bricked)
This firmware and baseband terminology gets confusing because early when I tried kies, samsung kies calls it firmware (I337UCUEMK2), but my "about" settings on the phone call it baseband (I337UCUEMK2). So I guess the word Baseband and Firmware are interchangeable?
In any case, I'm getting lots of great help here and feel I'm getting close to the finish line. It would seem that I now have two options to try:
1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2473747 - sent by [email protected]
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 - sent by both [email protected] and ted77usa
Does anyone one have a suggestion or preference on which of these two root methods is best (or to try first)?

Safe root method worked beautifully. Thanks you both. My phone is now rooted.
My next mission is to figure out how to flash it back to factory specs (unroot), for when the day comes that I want to sell it (which is a long ways off ) and so that I can be sure I didn't put any malware on it from all the other failed attempts I made. One of those attempts involved booting to safe mode and loading a zip file from sd card. Though it failed, that attempt went pretty far. It actually wiped my phone and rebooted it. It looked like it may have applied some changes though there was some errors during the process and it did not root my phone.
If anyone can point me in the right direction or provide the link to the factory rom and process for doing it. I'm all ears

[Q] Hi all, I 've been reading for two days now on how to unlock my sprint s4 ....

to use with straight talk, and I just have to bug you all with a few questions.
The basics: I have an active Straight Talk sim card that I want to put in my galaxy S4 that I just purchased (did not know it was Sprint until it was too late). Now, after hours of trying, bricking, unbricking, rooting and getting false hope from the [HOWTO] / [GUIDE] SPH-L720 Domestic SIM Unlock T-Mobile:AT&T:metroPCS:Straighttalk thread (which I assume would be my answer to my problem if not for the fact every attempt at flashing to mf9 bricks my phone because Odin fails everytime), I don't know what to do.
As of right now, my Sprint GS4 has been factory reset to Android V 4.3, baseband version L720VPUEMJA, with the model # SPH-L720. Can I even achieve what I want to do with these parameters and is there anyone out there willing to give me hand?
Thanks for any replies!
First you didn't completely read through the thread, secondly you can't go back so to unlock you need to flash a MDC modem and follow instructions

.
I mean. I read a lot. I'll be the first to admit I just may not have picked up on something in those 35 pages. Also, i believe I tried to flash my modem through the Odin one-click, but the process would hang when trying to establish the connection. I know the answer is on this forum somewhere, and I can usually follow these type of tech tutorial fairly well, but I'm just stuck. Do you have any specific advice?
If you are on the OTA MJA modem with MJA bootloader with Knox I do not think you can downgrade to any other previous modem without the issues you are describing with bricking and soft bricking.

You wouldn't have a link to that modem file? Maybe I was trying to us the wrong one. I was using "SPH-L720_MDC_Modem.tar.md5", and the program would just stall.

You can downgrade let me find a link
First unlock for international use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415587 follow that guide then go over to domestic and get a unactivated sim card to make sure its working I used T-Mobile unlocked it then canceled my sprint contract. Only downside is for aosp ROMs you have to do a couple edits for them to work
And always run Odin as admin

Settings > security > reactivation lock > uncheck it. (for future reference)
Reactivation Lock is a security feature implemented that if you have on and you lose/have your phone stolen it is tied to your Samsung account. If someone tries to flash a new ROM/Reset it, they cannot as it will require your Samsung account info to get past the setup screen.

Off the top of my head it should be in there or around security - (not currently using my N3 as it's got a broken screen so using my N5). -

That's weird. When i go to security settings, top one is encrypt, below that is find my mobile section and reactivation lock is at the bottom of that section.

Do T-Mobile offer a different method of locating a device? Like Lookout or something? I know one of the US carriers do - it's possible the firmware has been adjusted to reflect this due to any deal the carrier may have.

EDIT: Post a pic of your device in download mode if you can also!
I wouldn't worry too much about the S T R A P number versions currently, I think best thing to do is wipe the device, reflash your stock and start again with the CF-AutoRoot that was posted in the thread. It's possible something just may have corupted on you somewhere along the line.

ok, here is what I did:
1: install firmware. it reboots...then shows the android ..( he turns blue), then restarts ....phone works fine.
2: install the cf-root from above link and it installs fine, but then on reboot it gets stuck in "Seanandroid enforcing (something like that) and just keeps rebooting like it wants to go into recovery, but it never does...just bootloops.
3: I read in CF forum to turn off..pull battery and try again...same thing.
Do I need to load a recovery file?..am I missing a step or doing it out of order perhaps?
It's possible that the cf file you are using isn't compatible with the N900T - to be 100% certain you'd have to go over to the T-Mobile Note 3 forum on here and have a look through their cf auto root thread to be sure one way or another. It's puzzled me especially since the method you're using seems correct.

I will do that, thank you...I just saw this online in another forum with others having the same problem:
"I upgraded to kitkat 4.4.2 Note 3 SM-900T and even after odin says pass, it is stuck in Boot loop (which I know how to get out of) and I get this message like everyone else;
Recovery Booting...
Recovery is not seandroid enforcing
Set warranty bit: recovery"
uh -oh....lol...interesting find.
Uh oh indeed. Chainfire may have fixed it since though, he's pretty quick as updating and fixing things as soon as he's made aware of changes.

[Q] Which s/w version is recommended for rooting the SGH-i337

I had a rooted S3 SGH-I747 with Android 4.1.2. I sold it, and now I have a S4 SGH-i337 with Android 4.3.
I just want to root the phone, I am not interested in putting a custom ROM on it -- though maybe in the future.
Should I leave it at 4.3, or is it recommended to put a version of KitKat on it and then proceed to root it?
I did a quick software update check from the phone, but it said there were no updates. Does that mean I'm stuck at 4.3?
Thanks
Mike
I'd update to the nb1 rootable tar file via odin. Then use towelroot to root. The nb1 tar file can be found in the general forum

So the S4 at 4.3 is not rootable, unless I use the nb1 rootable tar file to make it rootable, is that correct assumption?
Apparently I need to read more on the subject. I was hoping it would be as easy as it was on my S3. I guess the difference is that the S3 was rootable, while the S4 requires additional work to make it rootable. Of course correct me if i'm wrong, as I'm probably still not getting it.
Thanks

Thanks for the link, it has helped tremendously!
Quick question, is the SIM card required during any of the flashing/rooting process? I didn't want to transfer my SIM from my working phone until I had my new replacement flashed and ready to go.
Thanks again

Can I reflash the same firmware over itself? I flashed my phone using the i337 nb1 rootable tar file you linked me to.
I ran into a problem, long story, it's in another thread I started.
Anyhow, everything was working and had it successfully rooted and my apps reinstalled. Now I'm locked out thanks to a glitch in a app called Unlock with WiFi. I have entered the wrong password 35 times and it still will not ask me if I want to reset/wipe the phone. Isn't it suppose to ask you after so many attempts?
The problem is I set a one letter password in the app, I mean it is convenient and the app allowed me too. Also it worked fine on my S3.
I did the same for the S4, but apparently with this firmware version, the lock screen doesn't like one letter passwords. If I type less than four characters and press enter, it erases what I typed. So it makes it impossible to enter my one letter password. If I type four characters or more, followed by return, I get Wrong Password.
At this point I give up, I just want to start over. I sent an email to the developer yesterday morning, but he has not responded.
Thanks again
Mike

I, as well as my neighbor have actually used Kies multiple times to bring back the stock ROM on our Samsung S2, S3, and i would assume the S4 as well.. All we did was procure the stock ROM and then use Kies to install it. That being said, as far as i know, you MUST link that particular phone to Kies, BEFORE you actually go through with the Root process. If you do not, there will be NO WAY for Kies to pick up your phone ie: model etc and thus most likely will not allow you to use it in Stock Recovery!!! Youve been warned lol ☺
Also, many, and i do mean many peeps have asked whether or not this method of root (motochopper) will work with android 4.4.2, yet no one has gotten a response...At least not in the 2yrs and 9 pages back that i checked... Could you PLEASE inform us, and maybe shoot me an email as to whether or not it will work...Until then, i am slightly worried it will not and wanted clarification!! Thank you so much!

Rooting Android using Motochopper on MAC?
I am carefully following all instructions along the way, until I download Motochopper.
It is a windows file, and I can't open it (.exe) on my MacBook Pro. Is there any intention to produce this program for us Applers?
I apologize for bad form, posting in the wrong place, etc. This is my first attempt at communicating in this venue.

As you might guess, I have Samsung Galaxy S4 with 4.4.2. I tried to download Motochopper onto my MacBook Pro only to discover that the zip file carried a windows program! (Is that true of all zip files? I have been switched to Mac for so long, I can't remember.)
I came here to get help, or maybe find Motochopper that was designed for Mac use. Then I saw your comment above. Two questions:
1. What does this mean? "Use towelroot on the nc1 firmware" Please illuminate and elucidate and HELP!
2. Can this be done via Mac?? :fingers-crossed:
Thank you for your kindness, from someone whose technology vastly outruns her ability to rein it in.

Moto chopper is obsolete now due to towelroot. Is you phone stuck in download mode? Try turning it off by holding the power for a few seconds. If that doesn't work pull the battery.

Get on YouTube and search for "galaxy s4 loki ZedoMax". Watch his video and follow the directions to a T and you should have ShabbyPenguin's Clockwork mod recovery. I got it to work. You have to be on the MDL firmware, which is what you have if you used moto chopper to root.
How do I find out what firmware version I have on an S4 before it is rooted?
I tried it on Galaxy Trend 2 and it fail.
trouble with motochopper and rooting
So I've used a couple good walkthroughs to root my Att galaxy s4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297033
and one other guide, from XDA (can't find the link)
both recommend using motochopper to root my phone and every time i have tried i receive the same message
{*}waiting for device
*daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037
*daemon started successfully
now in all the tutorial videos, the process takes 30 seconds to initiate and about 1-2 minutes to finish the process. My screen shows the above message and I've let it run all night. Any help on how to root my phone so i can remove my att bloatware and put on a custom system would be great
Steps I've taken so far and phone info
* searched multiple forums to find how to address this rooting issue (no success)
* phone has been unlocked from att themselves (phone is also paid off, contract is expired)
*developer options enabled
*USB debugging checked (enabled)
* updated drivers from samsung
*used keis to verify updates and to make sure everything is updated for rooting
*factory reset on phone with sim card removed
