Hey everyone,
I just bought a refurbished Nexus S for $200. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Loving the phone so far. However, last night I lost data services. The signal bars which is normally green was "greyed" out. I tried the web browser, twitter and nothing was working. Eventually I got data back in about 30 mins or so. I didn't think anything of it. Well, it happened again today. Signal bars were greyed out again. I have less than 14 days to return/exchange my device. Should I exchange it? Is this a known issue with the Nexus S? Just an FYI, I have 2 lines and data is working fine on my BlackBerry.
I'm running stock OS, 2.3.6
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hate to break it to you but one of the few bad things about this phone is its reception. Check what radio version. Your on. If it doesn't say ke1, go on peter alfonsos web site and download the ke1 radio and flash it through cwm. See if that helps.

I'm assuming that requires me to root the phone? So if I choose not to root my phone I'm going to have this ongoing issue?
rooting and installing this radio won't necessarily help. I have the I9020A with the newest radio and i do have this problem sometimes - I'm losing signal and it recovers in random time. the weirdest thing is that I can find my network when I'm searching manually for networks. You are on rogers (based on your avatar), so i can only guess we have the same model. My brother has the I9020A also, and he has similar yet different problem - when he lost signal due to no reception areas, he has to go into airplane mode and back to normal to recover the signal. he also has the newest radio (UCKF).
You should also notice that rooting your phone will make you lose your warranty, and i guess that also the the right to exchange it.
Yes the model I have is the same as your brother's. I know in general Samsung has bad radios. Is it because it's made by Samsung or is it particular to the Nexus S? I have been reading the same issues with the Galaxy Nexus, so I'm guessing it's Samsung.
I don't plan on rooting it because I know it will void the warranty and I won't be able to return/exchange it.
i have same case , which is , when i am back in my room ,away from streets and lots walls for signal to go through , 3G signal is **** , however, you can switch it to 2G signal in order to no to miss any phone calls and SMSs. but , you Internet speed will greatly reduced ... like max 8 kb/s

You should see if your phone is set to wcdma/gsm mode. My room is a inner room also and when it loses 3g signal, it jumps automatically to gsm mode (internet speed is not an issue, WI-FI FTW ).

Well I do have an ns4g and since these forums aren't seperated by model its easy to see why I would make the wrong recommendation. What are you following me around? Instead of being a troll why don't you post something useful and try and help the op bud.

What Radio do you currently have?
I usually had this problem and I had to go into mobile network settings, uncheck 'Data Enabled' and select 'Network Operators' until it found my carrier.
Have you tried checking the Airplane mode and disabling again?
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* when this happens and you go into phone information, do you see it connected?
I'm with t-mobile and i always have my connection on 3G but only when i use the internet shows h ans 2 bars. Can someone confirm if their nexus 4 does the same out is just that mine is defective

The nexus 4 only switches to HSPA when you use the Internet, in order to save battery.

Majorly annoying feature...it should at least give a 5 second window before switching back. Latency is ridiculous with the constant handover

Sometimes, it doesn't switch to HSPA+ and the bar stays on 3G when I use the internet, but when it does I don't get any connection.
I don't get anything over "E" either when I force 2G in the settings.
Because of this, I only have access to T-Mobile 4G but nothing else. I would like to use their 3G or even edge when I am traveling in the rural areas and there is no HSPA+ available. Does anyone else have this problem?

Its as a test to see if I will get data over anything but 4G, since 3G (UMTS:3) yields no connection whatsoever. And by forcing 2G (yes I know is edge, duh) I wanted to see if it was only a 3G issue. But obviously its not, since it doesn't get anything either. Not even 0.01 Mbps.
Btw forcing 2G gives me EDGE, thus showing an E symbol. That's why I expected to get something over E when I force 2G
EDIT: nvm, got speeds over 2G (E). 0.12 up, 0.06 down
3G still having issues

See your word choice can be taken two ways. By "over E" you meant data being transmitted. I took it as you were expecting something more than E.

In that case they need to fix the technology. That's how it works you know...things get better by patching bugs and fixing anomalies. If it's causing unexpected negative outcomes to the user, it behooves the manufacturer to fix it. I'm not really sure why I even bother replying to you, if you can't figure out why things should be tweaked and settings changed, you're at the wrong site bro.

i'm having issues with no connection for a long time when I open up a game or something. I'd have to wait about 5 seconds or longer for it to connect. Therefore, when I open a game such as Wordfeud, it will say error, no connection, pause, then open the game up. Is there any way to change this? I don't mind a hit on battery since I have an external I carry with me. Thank you in advance.
Would it be normal to bounce back and forth between all three, Edge, 3g and HSPA?

You must have really crappy signal then for it to be going between 2G and 3G. Between 3G and HSPA isn't a big deal because that's by design as was said. Having active connection to the towers only ties up the limited number of channels on a tower plus kills your battery faster. If everyone held open channels on the towers, calls would be failing since they had no channels to connect to. I think it's something like 256 channels per tower or something. That's why tower density is important in big cities.
I'm on AT&T MVNO though and my phone stays on H the whole time (not dropping back to 3G). I've had that issue with my SGS2 and newer radios for it but the older ones would always fall back to 3G. There is a momentary lag when the device renegotiates a channel with the tower but in general it shouldn't take that long, maybe 3-5 seconds from complete idle. There's a half-way stage called DCH (or is it ACH) where it can jump back to actively sending data in 1/2 second but it only stays that way if the timeout of 7 seconds doesn't expire (if the tower you are connected to support Fast Dormancy it does 7 seconds, if not i think it's 30 seconds).
Yeah, it looks like I've got really terrible signal strength at my house, but still manage to pull 5mb down. My signal strength is around 100 at best. The only time it was punting me down to 2g was when I was first activating, but that hasn't happened again. Maybe it was just a new setup type of issue, and like all of us, one little thing goes wrong and I think the sky is falling.
It's normal for it to switch from 3g to hspa
I'm on T-Mobile and my nexus 4 is constantly switching to hspa only when data is needed. Thats fine and all but data doesnt work when 3g is showing only the "H"... is this normal?

Yes, that's normal. Your phone should switch to HSPA when you NEED data, but otherwise, it's going to be on 3G.
Ok this 3g H thing makes better sense now but it seems in my area it takes a while to reconnect the H so the internet works I wish it would just stay on the H full blast as i have it plugged in so don't care about battery.
And I would love to have the option to shut off 2 g, not just 2g only, i but i will figure it out.
Otherwise this phone has a strong signal where i am but i wish it would just stuggle on HSPA+, even if it drops out rather than switch to edge on me.

Where I live there is a pretty crappy signal, on my blackberry, i have it on "3g only" now i get a steady internet but at like 2 bars. I wish I could do this on my nexus so i can tell the phone HSPA+ only, that way it will stay connected to that only, when it lost the signal it does switch over to GSM/EDGE
In other words, at home I have a strong GSM signal and weak HSPA+, it wants to drop to 2 g all the time, that sucks. My blackberry just struggles and keeps reconnecting to the 3 g, this is much better for me.
I just wonder isn't there a way to have all the available radios listed, a app better than "phone info" as it doesn't do this so it is like
GSM/EDGE
3G
HSPA+
UMA
LTE
and you can check a box and you phone stay on that network ?
I notice in a network monitor app that my phone says it uses
WHSPA
UMA
GSM
and
UNKNOWN
so it is flipping threw radios because of the weak signals, maybe the phone is faulty i don't know
When my nexus is on HSPA+, even with no bars it is crazy fast compared to waht i am used to, even if the signal comes and goes it take to long between
changing radios or whatever to get back on the 4g

Every T-Mobile phone I've owned has done this. Including the nexus one.
Initially the nexus one didn't show the change in the status bar. CM added the change and I'm not sure if stock did that later.
The sgs2 doesn't show the change in the status bar. But its happening. T-Mobile just leaves it showing "4G" for marketing and to not confuse people. Because it obviously does. I can't tell ya how many times I have answered this question between the galaxy nexus and nexus 4.

Alternatively you can change the 3g icon to an H or 4g as well. Just extract the systemui.apk. copy the H icon and rename it to whatever the 3g icon is called. Wrap the apk back up and push it back.

This happens to me and it causes a problem. It is a brand new Nexus 4 and I am on Wind Mobile in Canada.
The 3G/H switch actually causes me problems - every time I go to use my phone's data, it takes maybe... 15 seconds and a few attempts before I can get online. It happens every time I go to use my data.
It's extremely annoying as you can imagine - what can I do? Is there any way to force my phone to remain on H all the time?
I am running stock 4.2.2
thanks

I think I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm with Telus in Canada and I experience the same thing. Except for me the network always sits on HSPA, and when I go to use the data (in any form - IM, reddit, browsing) it switches to HSPA+ before loading the page. And that transition takes several attempts and 15 seconds sometimes. I've been searching for a solution ever since I got this phone. Glad to see it's not just me (or even Telus it seems)...
I used to have an HTC Desire, and the same sim and APN settings on that phone did not have this delay. And the only difference I can think of is that the Desire stays on regular HSPA, whereas the nexus switches to HSPA+ when a data connection is attempted. I have read some posts for Samsung devices that allow you to force it to use only HSPA. It was like typing *#30179# or something and getting a menu, but that combination does nothing on the Nexus4. Will keep searching, collectively I'm sure we can figure this out!
My phone never shows 3G.. only H or E.. goes straight to E from H. Weird.

OMG I'm so glad I found your posts. I'm on Fido (Montreal) and I'm having the same issues. It takes a while to switch from 3G to H sometimes, and sometimes it just seems to not switch at all! For example, if I'm in WhatsApp and I send a message, sometimes it'll just stay there waiting for a good long time before it's actually sent. It's like the phone doesn't "realize" that there's an app requesting to send/receive data! Super annoying, and definitely an issue that can be reproduced. It happens to me in WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and even the Gmail app.
same issue here... it takes almost a min to transition from 3g to H and visversa

Are you completely stock? Have you done anything to your phone that may affect it?
And are you getting multiple bars? I remember when I was in SF and I'd be right at the edge of the network, so I was connecting to 4G but I was hardly doing it, and I wouldn't be able to use data.
You might have a faulty radio? Check to make sure your within range, and does 3G work fine for you?

If you are stock, I would also try updating your profile and PRL. Menu>Settings>More>System Update>Update Profile and then the same for PRL.
remember lte is still being worked on and you could easily be trying to connect to a tower that isn't fully operational yet.

No.
4G/LTE is at the moment on most carriers in the world I believe a data only service. If you make a call, the phone will look for a 3g or 2g network to make a voice call on. If it goes to 3G then some carriers allow data and voice simultaneously, others dont.
At some point, some carriers will enable VoLTE (Voice over LTE) which should mean you can do Voice and Data at the same time.
As far as I am aware, the HTC One X isnt an LTE phone, so you were using 3G and the explanation lies above.
Mine is s4 non LTE version. And i cant talk with data connection at same time.

As above, your carrier may not support it. It may even be down to different configurations on the bts your connected too. Depending on the amount of backhaul to it, it may not be allowed. Some bts in a different area may be configured differently, or, as mentioned yor network doesn't support it at all.
