Hi!
I'm kind of new to this, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
I installed CM10.2 on the eMMC along with TWRP recently.
I am looking for a way to use the 1 GB of space (labeled as sdcard0) I can access when i connect the device to my computer to store some music and play it though Apollo.
My questions / concerns are
1. Is there an easy way to increase that 1GB to store more music (i know I could use an external SDcard, but am just inquisitive)
2. My nook shows up as a portable device on my pc (running win 7) when settings in storage are set to media device, but it gives me an error every time i copy a file saying the device has been disconnected, even though i can copy one media file at a time (i cant copy more then one file at a time)
3. If i change the setting in storage to mass storage, it shows up in my pc as a drive but then i can not copy anything to it as it dosent not seem to be accessible
4. If i do get media onto the 1GB partition (one song at a time), Apollo will not query that location to look for music, and if i use the file manager to open the file in Apollo it dosent remember it once the song is over. Any help to get the files playing smoothly in Apollo from the location would be appreciated.

You would need tor repartition the internal eMMC. I have never done it (my Nook came with a 4GB partition for sdcard0), but there are instructions in the forums.

Sounds like an issue with the MTP implementation in Windows 7 (works fine in Linux here). You may want to change the storage settings and use the USB mass storage mode, so your PC will see the Nook as a standard USB drive.

You may want to use the sdcard0 partition as if it was a “proper” sdcard, provided that you are using CM, you can enter this in a terminal:

setprop persist.sys.vold.switchexternal 1
After rebooting, applications should see the sdcard0 volume as a proper SD card (and scan it for media as expected).
Thanks a lot for the help. I did find the thread to reparation my emmc, but they recommended to keep it at 1GB, so will stick with that for now to solve my other problems.
You mentioned to change storage settings to USB mass storage, however when I do that, like i said it does show up in windows, but i can not access it giving an error that the drive is not connected and I should connect a drive.
with regard to your comment on making it a "proper sdcard" i must be doing something wrong, cos it does not make any change, may be i need to do it as a super user or something like that, or type in some code before the command you provided.

I think what he must be referring to is swapping internal and external sdcards. See my NC Tips thread linked in my signature, item A16.
And I'm not sure why you think going to 1GB/5GB scheme is bad and staying with what you have is best. By far most users prefer the old 1GB/5GB scheme.

everytime I put files on the sd card, I have to reboot Android because without ES File Explorer won't show the new files I put on the memory card.
Even "Refresh" in ES File Explorer doesn't helo. Is there any other way?

This is a well documented problem. I think it's to do with the way that android sees the SD card with booting from it but don't quote me on that. As far as I know, the best ways round it are:
1. Use dropbox. Free 2gb account and can be very useful.
2. FTP. This is my personal favourite. SwiFTP is a free FTP server for android and there are many free ftp clients for PC/Mac/Linux available. I use FileZilla (opensource ftp client).
3. I believe that if you unmount your SD card before copying files over, then remount however I don't find it particularly successful.
There are other ways like shared folders, email files etc but the top 2 above are the best for me. I use dropbox for small files and one-offs or if I'm copying a lot of stuff and don't want to reboot to winmo, then FTP.
It's also worth noting that if you are a windows user then winamp can sync music over wifi providing you install the winamp android client. However both winamp for windows and android are free.

The problem is not only that I want to put files through USB on it, it happens also when I use CurrentWidget for example that wants to create a log file on the sd card. Hmm...
I use MDJ Froyo HD 4.6, and there are practically no problems when using mass storage option... After unplugging the files are on the SD card... Only sometimes have to reboot, but not very often...
Why so complicated? Use "Multi Mount SD Card" (it´s free) to connect to PC and you will see new files without rebooting.

If you're now saying that applications are unable to create files on the SD then there is something wrong with your card. I'd recommend copying everything off it and reformatting it (use disk management to format it, and use the largest cluster size available).
Some builds suffer from this problem and some don't.
Im using HD2ONE 0.3.6 and it's working fine. File explorer detects the new files after transferring via USB Cable

I've heard many people complain about not being able to see files after copying them across, but I've never heard anyone say that an app could not make a file on the sd card.
I am having the same exact problem. I was transferring files from this PC to my phone and everything was going fine (it refreshes right away after disconnect) then suddenly, my SD Card got corrupted and I was forced to reformat. I used the same ROM (Darkstone's SUPERAM FROYO) and after that, it won't sync anymore. I even tried removing it and using the HD2ONE (mentioned above) ROM and it was the same. I went home, copied everything from my SD backup from the other PC and same symptoms.
I thought I was missing a sync app or something but no. I looked into each of the folders I copied and most of them are blank.
I hope someone can save us!
I find it easiest and safest to just use ES Explorer to access the network shares and copy files wirelessly. The way our data.img is mounted, giving the pc full access to the sdcard is just not a good move. There was good reason when you connected to windows' sync software it disables your phone from accessing the card.
Even though the hd2one build seems to handle it correctly I almost never do it anymore unless it's for big files. It saves the wear and tear on the usb port anyway.
I had that "problem" too, but for me it was easy to solve. Here is the whole procedure:
So, i want some files to put on my sdcard, i plug in the usb cable and select the option "use as a storage", dont check the "use allways" or "dont ask again" (or whatever this is called on your machine). Now the computer "see" the phone and i put my files on it. In this moment i cant browse the sdcard on my hd2, because its reserved for windows now, (thats why currentwidget cant write onto it, same if you have a wallpaper in some "wallpaper" folder on sd).
Now, when i am done, usually i unplug the usb cable for some seconds and then i plug it in again and choose the option "charge only" and the sdcard gets mounted in android like it should and all my new imported files are visible.
Its the same on WinMo, if you choose there the "HDD" option, you cant browse the sdcard on the mobile. Only if you choose "use active sync"(slower) you are able to browse the sdcard.

hello, I accidentally deleted the /sdcard folder and now it appears that i've lost all my data. So, i've deleted the folder by mistake from windows explorer and the tablet "auto created" a new one and none of my data shows up. I've tried about a dozen recovery programs but none will recognize my tablet. How can I make it show in Windows 7 like a Removable Device and not like a Portable Media Player. I kown it's more of a windows question but maybe someone else here made the stupid mistake i did and kowns how to slove my problem or please send me to a forum were I can get some help.
ps: I kown not to write anything on the tablet's storage until I solve this.
ps2: i don't actually have a sd card, all my data is on the internal memory.

Had some free time lately and did some research and I found out that the reason I can’t access the internal storage through software like recuva or other data recovery sw, it is because Honeycomb uses MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) instead of UMS (USB Mass Storage), like android did until honeycomb and data recovery software doesn’t work on MTP, or at least none of the ones I’ve tried, and I’ve tried a few. So, I decided to change the thread question to: Can the Acer a500 support any other Android OS released except honeycomb or ICS (I read it uses MTP also)? and: Can the internal storage be accessed by a recovery software on Linux or any kind of OS? plus: Did anyone manage to recover data from internal storage through any method?
Ps: I don’t need a full working rom, just the touch screen or a mouse so I can mount the internal storage.
Ps2: I would have tried it myself, but I don’t have the knowledge(all I could think about was to download the rom from other tablets that run on 2.3) or the time to joggle with roms on my acer so if any of you developers out there could help me I would be in great debt to you.

Also, on the W7 computer, have you tried Recuva?
Again, not sure if it will work, but I have used it for memory cards, flash drives, etc and it worked really well.
I think the biggest challenge though would be the way that the computer reads the tablet. It doesn't appear like a normal external USB device.
So, I think that an app will be your best bet. I think too that Android keeps apps*, OS*, and user data (your pics, movies, documents, etc) on separate partitions, so installing an app shouldn't overwrite any of your old stuff. I am only 90% sure of that though. :/

Were you rooted??? Did you make a nandroid backup??? If you have a nandroid back up you can restore just the data partition from recovery and you will be current as of your last backup. Another major reason to root your device.

My thoughts were that Samba acts as a server and would be used with wifi to show as local network share on your pc. Then to use a program to recovery your files. I think that idea is not possible after further checks. Seems none of my recovery apps will recover from network drive. Some will save to Network drive though, but that doesnt help you.
One of the apps from the market spexwood suggested may be your only hope.
I would suggest getting an sdcard and save your photos and videos on it.. much easier to recover if erased.

I noticed on a few different occasions that my KODI (now using SPMC but they both behave the same way) app data growing to more the 6 Gigs thereby making my 16Gig shield run out of memory. I have been uninstalling and reinstalling to work around the issue.
I'd like to resolve it so I tried following the instructions in the thread below. :

I'm not using adoptable storage and am trying to get this working with either an SD card (shown as /storage/4B2F-56AC) or a USB 3.0 thumbdrive (shown as /storage/98FB-2ABF).
I created a file in /sdcard called "xbmc_env.properties" (I also tried "spmc_env.properties" even though SPMC is supposed to recognize both).
I added the follow text in the file : xbmc.data=/storage/98FB-2ABF/
Unfortunately with this file sitting in the /sdcard location, SPMC refuses to run.. It just sits at a black screen. I force closed the app, restarted the Shield and it still does the same thing... Sits at a black screen.
When I remove the file SPMC returns to working normally so I know it's trying to process the file.. I'm just not sure why it's not working.. It's simply one line of code in a file so it's not rocket science but I simply cannot get SPMC to launch when the file is present.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong ? I'd still like to move the DATA to an external source so if it grows unexpectedly in the future it doesn't interfere with other SHIELD TV apps and functions.
On a side note...
I DID notice that the culprit files that were taking up all the space in the SPMC / KODI install were .cache files... I'm thinking I should just be able to delete them ( I actually did but SPMC was still acting up) to reclaim that valuable space ?

I guess this hasn't been attempted very often on the Shield.
If someone could successfully take a crack at this and post a how to it would be greatly appreciated.
I tried again yesterday on both an SD card and a USB drive w/o any luck. One thing I did notice though was that when I tried to actually write to both devices through the Shield using X-Plore, it failed. With the SD card it prompted me how to enable write access and I eventually was able to copy data over to it but with the USB drive it simply failed and I couldn't get copy anything to it while it was connected to the Shield.
I should lastly mention that I am NOT rooted and am fully stock.
Is this even possible using external storage ? I don't want to setup these device as "Internal Storage" as it's my understanding that when doing so you are replacing the current internal storage (my 16Gigs) with the SD (or USB thumb drive). I tried doing so with my SD card a while back but noticed periodic slow downs on the Shield so I undid the change.
It seems as though the "Adoptable storage" option has improved with the latest update.
I converted my USB drive to Internal Storage and let the Shield do it's thing.
When all was done I was able to goto the SPMC app settings and choose to have the app on the USB drive vs. the internal 16Gb storage. I made the switch and SPMC appears to be working ok. Time will tell if I see any noticeable performance impacts.
I already use a centralized SQL DB for all media info so I'm hoping performance will be the same.

You mention a change in performance when using your sd card. You do understand that you must use a class 10 or preferably higher class to make it the same or faster than current internal storage?
I was trying to do the same thing as you but in my case I chose to move internal storage to a 64gb usb 3.0 usb drive.
Then I noticed kodi's performance was absolutely ****ty. The reason for this is because it tries to read data from the usb drive, and somehow kodi doesn't handle that well. My solution was to let the app be installed to adoptive storage but let the .kodi data be read from the actual internal storage.
This eliminated all performance issues!
Don't you need a UHS Class 3 device?
I have since tried converting and testing out both my USB thumb drive and my Class 10 SD card by converting them one at a time to internal storage and moving SPMC over.
I honestly thought my 6 month old USB 3.0 thumb drive would have been faster than a 3 year old SD card but I was wrong.
I have noticed a small performance decrease but nothing near as bad as you mention that currently warrants me to revert to internal storage. Time will tell as I use it more.

I decided to revert back to using internal storage only. I was getting intermittent pausing of videos that I was watching off my NAS with SPMC installed on both a Class 10 Samsung SD card and a USB 3.0 thumb drive.

I am using adoptive storage but moved kodi data around for better performance.
I followed this official guide on how to move Kodi data folder somewhere else:
HOW-TO:Change_data_location_for_Android (wiki)
I used ES file Explorer for this.
Here are the steps:
turn on the option to show hidden files (it is the first option). On the root of your SD Card (path is /sdcard) create a file called: xbmc_env.properties.
Open the created file and add only this line:
xbmc.data=/storage/emulated/0/InternalStorage/
You can point to another folder inside InternalStorage folder but you need to create it first. It will not be created automatically by Kodi.
Start Kodi to verify that it works. Kodi will start with the clean profile. Quit Kodi.
Using ES file explorer to erase the new contents of the /sdcard/InternalStorage folder. This is where you want your kodi data.
Using ES file Explorer and go to /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files
Move everything to a /sdcard/InternalStorage. Or you can just copy it and keep the old files until you verify that everything works.
Now start Kodi. You should see your old stuff loading but now everything is fast again.
Thanks for the info.. I actually used this as the basis for what I was trying to accomplish except I wanted to have Kodi DATA on the external storage to prevent unforeseen growth end up chewing up all the valuable internal storage.
The problem is that you cannot write to external storage from the shield UNLESS it's setup as adoptable storage, hence the approach I tried which worked, but resulted in unacceptable performance in the form of periodic video freezing.

when i connect my phone to pc, i get several options on the protocol, but none seem to get me my SD card as an actual drive... if i do media or photo, i get the axon as a "device" but not a drive letter. is there any way to set this? i'd like to be able to edit my entire sd card music library directly via foobar, but i can't add the folder if it's a device, only if it has a standard drive path... (for some reason i can navigate to it via foobar for single files, but not folders)

The Mass Storage mode is disable prety much by default on all recent LP and MM builds. There are ways to enable it but it's kerenl dependent.
Here is an enabler for Android One devices , you can start from there to see if this will work on other devices but i would not try this unless you are unlocked BL and backed with known good restore for boot.img. It probably needs proper kernal support for the device itself

As mentioned by @peramikic , Mass Storage is no longer available since LP release, but other option is when you plug your device select MTP, that will allow you the use of your sdcard as mass storage but yeah i know not the same.

I'm having a rather unique problem with my the Micro SD card I installed.
I can format it as internal storage and it won't pop up for file managers or my computer.
This means I can't manually move files to it all.
Despite that when it's internal storage I can move apps to it and it adds new apps to it by default.
I could go to move all and move everything it can on, but it's a fairly slow SD card so I'm hoping to mainly put music, videos and any pictures on there.
I worry about it moving the apps that I want to keep in internal storage for speed over.
Does anyone know how I could fix this?

I didn't manage to figure out how to add files manually while it was internal storage through either internal file managers or through the computer.
But I did manage to find the SD card while it was portable.
The trick is to use the built in file explorer on the phone and copy a small file onto the SD card.
With there being something other than just Android files on the SD card it can then be discovered by the computer.
This mainly solves my problem as I plan to use it primarily for storage of music and game files, with the emulators being on the phone itself.
I had this issue a few days ago. You have 2 options to format, (1) as a internal storage and only your phone can read this and other option (2)to use on others devices. Using the second option I managed to transfer files to my microSD like it used to be.
While using the first option I was able only to transfer apps to it through the system.

Is that normal for Internal Storage?
I expected there to at least be a folder in the normal phone space called SD card or something?
Is there no way to manually move music there when it's internal storage?
Also I tried changing it to be portable but my computer still couldn't see it.
File manager could actually see it and open it but I couldn't copy paste anything to it.
So I turned it back to internal as I can at least move apps to it successfully at the moment.

When I tried as Internal Storage any File Manager found my SDcard too... Thats why I'm using as portable.
After that, i could see this.
Maybe you're missing something like changing the USB connection from Charging to File transfering.
Did you checked this?
Yes it can see the rest of my phone and move files, so I've made sure to change it to file transferring.
When you used internal storage file managers failed to find your SD card as well?

Here your saying that you could find it and that's why you swapped over?
I assume you forgot to say it failed to show up separately and that's why you changed to portable.

Sorry! Yes, I failed to find my SD card too, thats why i changed to portable.
Im assuming this is a normal behavior, my last Android phone was a Galaxy S2 and I stopped following Android changes for the lasts 4/5 years. But idk why you can't see it even in portable mode... That should work as worked for me.
Hope someone help you more than I did!

Thank you for trying to help.
I think I might have figured out part of the problem, the file explorer I normally use doesn't have permission to add anything to the SD card. I'm not sure how I would go about giving it permission though.
But when I use the system built in I was able to copy paste some music onto it.
With a file on the SD Card my computer was able to locate it as well, and I can now copy and paste to the SD card using my computer.
So with your help I was able to figure out how to get portable working.
It is a bit disappointing that there isn't a way to manually add files while it is an internal storage though.
So again while your solution didn't directly work, it made me think and find a solution to my problem even if it's not the one I wanted.
