Lag on all roms? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. So i had a Nexus 5 for about two weeks. i was slightly dissapointed in the camera and screen. although it is built by LG as well, i noticed the quality control may have been a bit more lenient(to cut costs im sure), as there was minor light bleed. i found a mint condition LG G2 on craigslist for $420, so i decided to get it and return the Nexus 5 for a refund. As far as screen, battery and camera are concerned, the G2 is amazing. My problem lies with some of the unresolved issues which i am hoping are software based. I do have the issue where the touchscreen will randomly go crazy with phantom touches (fixed by turning screen off and on again). I've also noticed lag, on the stock launcher as well as apex and nova. the phone was rooted when i got it, so i decided to flash cm10.2, carbon rom, and cleanrom...with all of these roms, i experienced lag (swiping around homescreens/app drawer). i dont benchmark, but i know this phone is just as fast as the Nexus 5, so it shouldnt lag on aosp based roms. im really not trying to bash on the phone because it really is amazing, but i really feel like maybe i made a mistake. do you guys have any ideas what may be causing the lag? i have tried stock based roms as well as aosp based and still experience it.

Dude stop complaining. These ROMs you speak of that lag, those issue will be resolved over time in the first few builds. Give the devs some time to work out the issues. If you don't like it, don't flash it and get back your Nexus 5 since nothing will satisfy you.

Install AOSP and you'll be fine. Even stock I didn't notice any real noticeable lag.

[Q] Upgrading to GS4 from Epic 4G Touch? (GS2)

Hey Everyone,
Okay.. getting ready to upgrade my GS2 to GS4, but have a couple of quick questions.
1. I read that the GS4 was laggy when it first came out. Has Sprint fixed that in the stock ROM? Or does sac's rom fix it?
2. I read remember reading something about a camera issue on the purple GS4. Is there still an issue with that?
Thanks,
EB
It's kinda laggy still with the latest official rom. Many people might disagree with that statement. The more apps you install, the more lag it gets. My opinion is, the biggest improvement you will notice is the screen size and much higher resolution. If you have 4g LTE in your area, you should notice much higher online speeds when compared to 4g wimax. Other than that, IMO, the other improvements are negligible. A stock battery will last longer on a s4 than the s2. I've only ran stock roms so I can't give you any opinions on them.
No lag on this phone but when I try different kernels I sometime get lag but when I go back to stock kernel I have no issuses. That's my experience with this phone I came from the s3

NO lag whatsoever for me. My phone is ripping fast. Have unbelieveable GPS (which I sorely lackes on my Epic 4GT). Have stupendous LTE (when I get it) and everything just works.
I have tried most of the ROMs here (Sac's and Triforce are great!). But I need my phone to 100% funtional for work so I'm usually on a stock (or slightly modded) TW ROM.
While my battery life is great (often over 24hours with about 50% of that screen time), I am not a battery life thumper - it's 2013 folks and you have a $500+ device; buy another damn charger or battery. I prefer stability, speed and smoothness; in that order.
There are a few really polished TW ROMs here and also some AOSP/CM variants that are really comming along. My only issues with the latter have been problems with GPS and sometimes even data - both of which I rely on heavily during my work days.
This phone, being a sammy is very similar to the e4gt. If you spend some time going through all the posts you will very quickly pick up on some of the differences. Biggest being that on this device the boot, recovery and kernal are all seperate images. So you kernel doesn't have to be 'wrapped' in a recovery, you can mix and match to your liking.
Jump in and have some fun.
Good luck.

I recently made the same upgrade you're considering. While I loved my old E4GT the improvements in the GS4 are amazing and I love it. With that said it's not without it's issues, the lag you spoke of earlier is there sometimes it's not unbearable, but I definitely feel like Touchwiz is holding the hardware back (nothing the official CM wont fix!) battery life is fantastic, especially with Sacs rom. I get 20+ hours on a full charge, with heavy use it's more like <15. GPS locks fast, much faster than the Epic Touch and the screen is light years better.
I do notice this phone gets quite a bit warmer during regular use than the E4GT (which barely got warm, except for specific situations) but it's much better with Sacs rom than on stock.
All and all, you'll be happy with the upgrade and will not regret it.
Thanks for the info guys. I wiped my E4GT and put a tweaked stock on it (was CM10) and it actually fixed the GPS issues.. but now the phone reboots itself all the time and freezes and completely freaks out when i plug in my car charger... lol.. So this is a good excuse to upgrade..

I upgraded from an S2 to the S4 at the beginning of the summer. I mostly ran CM/AOKP based ROMS (usually BeanStalk or one of it's variants) on my S2, but after reading so many positive comments on the S4 forum about TW/Stock performance, I held off on flashing CM/AOKP and have been a very happy camper running Highway55's MF9 TW-based rom which I highly recommend (see my detailed post on the Highway55 rom thread that describes my basic configuration).
I don't notice any lag, and battery life has remarkably been improved over the S2. I hate to be tethered, so I always buy an extra battery. With my S2, I would swap my battery two or three times a day (I'm a heavy user), but with S4's remarkably improved battery peformance, I swap my battery maybe once or twice a week. GPS just works period. LTE is amazingly fast. This phone rocks!

LG G3 D850 CM12 Lollipop nightly review

This morning I decided I couldn't hold back from android 5.0 any longer and the update just couldn't come fast enough (it never can, am I right) so being the average android fanboy I looked toward CyanogenMod. I knew all they had was night lies and that was why I held off so long, but my curiosity gave in and I had to. So I headed over to cyanogen and grabbed my handy dandy .zip . I rebooted to recovery and went through the routine, and it just couldn't go fast enough, in reality it was the fastest flash I've ever done. First cm12, then my gapps. Waited for the phone to reboot blahdeeblahdeeblahhh, went through the upgrade process and BAMMM! 5.0 RIGHT IN MY FACE! First look at this nightly 5.0 and I couldn't get enough. The quadhd has definatley been put in effect and it shows. Everything I've used has been fully functional except updating su binaries (prob lack of support for 5 due to being new). The elegance and speed run perfectly along eachother, and my phone has never been faster. I may be speaking to soon, but this project must be somewhere close to a stable build. I'm currently running 1/21 nightly and i recommend it to others, I have found this ROM safe and will continue updating my phone with nightlies

I never understood why people think that CM12 is so faster than LG's rom. For me both are blazing fast, CM12 could be even slower because it has longer animations (if we compare on 1x speed both). Speaker quality and volume is really lame on CM12 rom unlike on LG's rom. Only two things I dont like about LG's rom is crap lockscreen (CM12 has best lockscreen ever) and new Lollipop look. Kitkat looks much more elegant than Lollipop which looks childish and cartoonish. I bought G3 after having various Nexus devices with full stock google experience, and I gotta say it's nice to have some integrated useful features. CM12 is still missing many features, won't even think about switching to it right now.

I'm in agreement with speaker volume, I noticed after switching over that my phone wasnt as loud as it had been before. I believe a lot of people believe that the simple look of lolipop is what makes it so elegant, its more laid back. There are a lot of disadvantages with switching over to. If your a quickremote user you quickly miss not having it in cm12.
Long story short, custom ROM'S never be good as official ESPECIALLY for LG G3, you just need to understand that, for some people it's ok but for some don't. All you need is a root and MAYBE a custom kernel. PEACE.
Agreed on sound quality but CyanogenMod has many advantage's
I would argued on sound quality and maybe animations just because they are more much nice in CyanogenMod vs stock ROM. Everything else is just plain better in CyanogenMod. I am experiencing a randomly sound beep for about 1 to 3 seconds and dont know why. I am always on the lastest nightly.
Also I love the fact that I can see thr constants additions or fixes CyanogenMod is doing.

I had wifi and data issues too on CM12. I could barely get 3G on some places at work.

It's good to hear that CM12 is coming along. I tried it back when it was "unofficial" and my phone was overheating to the point that it actually scared me. Since then I have moved over to Cloudy G3 (which is based on stock). The Cloudy G3 Rom itself is very quick and with the Android L theme from @Kickoff it has a much nicer look that is closer to the stock android UI. I think I will stick with Cloudy G3. The main reason being that I am able to use ExFAT on my SD card and also the LG camera allows you to save to SD and all of the LG features are there if I want them.
Illusion ROM is extremely stable with a good build team, been using for two days now with NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER! Its the full lollipop experience.
I also moved as soon as CM12 become possible to use for daily use.
Room is incredible fast, every day less and less bugs. With the most of them is possible to live with.
Comparing to ****ty LG's android, i finally have feeling that i have good phone. Lag and terrible quality of official android make me to feel sorry for buying this phone (beside battery).
I reverted back to cm12. Running 1/26 right now and its flawless. DO NOT UPDATE TO 1/27! There are major speed issues and connection problems. Illusion ROM lacked features I enjoyed and there settings menu was a train wreck.

WARNING
DO NOT UPDATE PAST NIGHTLY 26!!! after nightly 26 almost all connection services such as WiFi and mobile network will not work or work extremely poorly. I have tested all the way up to nightly 29. All the zips are in some way corrupt. They give red code while flashing but proceed anyways (I'm not a proffesional sorry guys haha). Nightly 29 wouldn't even boot without the kernel crashing. Nightly 26 is running almost flawlessly. I hope someone sees this so they can address the problem. I have still not tried nightly 30. I might try sometime later tommorow, I'll continue updating.
Nightly 30 and 31 are working and everything is starting to get polished over. Nightly 31 received a new boot animation darker than before with a nicer ending. Both run very well with no problems noticed so far other than very minor lag between some animations.
Mind that CM12 is in its early Nightlies, issues will be fixed but it will take time.
Well of course, I'm just recording bugs in each nightly so people will have a better idea whether or not they should move to the next nightly
I'm currently considering this rom. Comming from a Nexus 5 I really miss stock Lollipop. The only thing I was wondering is if it was possible to keep the LG Camera App and if the knock code still works? I don't really care about anything else from the official LG rom.
I notice there hasn't been any update recently to this thread. Are you guys still using Cyanogen? How is it comming along.
Thanks.

the activeness of this thread doesn't determine the stability of a ROM lol. flash CM yourself and find out. if you want your G3 to be as smooth and flawless as your Nexus 5 was on AOSP, over clock your GPU to 580MHz and it'll fix all the lag. you can do this on the stock CM kernel using Trickster Mod kernel tweaker.
also, no LG camera and no knock code. but there is Motorola camera which is really just as great, and there is double tap screen to turn it on.

Bloody G3 - I need to rant

I know this is going to sound very much like a first world problem, but this phone is frustratingly ****. It is easily the buggiest, slowest, most laggy phone I have ever had.
I have tried just about all the LG based ROMS, only to find that each one, although not buggy, are all laggy. The lag is so bad that it gives my old S2 on Gingerbread a run for its money. At least with Samsung phones, you could get rid of the lag by using a AOSP ROM and it would still be functional.
To solve the frustrating lag issue, I have installed a CM based ROM. At first I was delighted. The lag was gone. The phone was now comparable to my super fast Nexus 5. But after a few hours, I noticed the same bugs that every other CM based ROM user has. Today, I had to restart the phone six times FFS! It is a little more stable on 777 Kernel, but the same issues still persist.
Has anyone achieved bliss with this phone? Is there any ROMS, AOSP or LG based, that are fast, (Nexus 5 fast), and bug free?
Don't get me wrong, I love devs and the work they do. Without them, my old Galaxy phones, (S1, S2, S3, S4), would have been poo. My Nexus 5 would have been boring. (Stock android is meh). I just don't understand why this phone seems to have so many issues. Help me understand why it is so hard to develop a fast and reliable ROM for this phone. I know it isn't from a lack of trying. There is heaps of support and devs working on various ROMS in the G3 threads already and all of them are very talented.
Is it hardware based lag or is there something else inherently wrong with the phone?
Thanks for reading and offering any solutions. I don't want to list the ROMS I have tried, as it will seem like I am an ungrateful twat to those devs that worked so hard. Suffice to say, I have tried all the popular CM/AOSP and LG based ROMS.

Compared to what? Which other android phone have you used? In isolation, this phone is barely acceptable. Then, after you use a nexus, HTC or Sony phone, this phone is comparably slow. Almost unusable.
I can't bring myself to try stock again until someone who has other phones to base their claims on can confirm it is lag free.

Have you tried the usual tricks?
1. Swap out the stock launcher for something like Nova or Apex
2. Switch your keyboard to a 3rd party keyboard
While it does suffer from the random stutter, my phone is generally very zippy and does not lag.
Done all that. On stock based ROMS, stutter and lag is unbearable. My wife, nexus 5 user, even commented on how bad it is. I'm actually embarrassed to use the phone in front of people. I know it isn't a hardware issue, because AOSP ROMS are lag free, but not bug free.
Yeah, the phone is nowhere near as quick as a Nexus. The notification bar is also **** compared to stock Lollipop. There are a few tricks I use to improve performance on a stock rom:
1) Turn off throttling/thermal daemon via the service menu.
2) I use setCPU to set the phone to use the "performance" scheduler whenever the screen is on, locking it at 2.5Ghz.
Still isn't perfect, but it helps substantially. Obviously this is in addition to changing the launcher.
It's just one of those things. As you say, CM12 just isn't stable and worryingly seems to be going backwards, getting less and less stable with each passing nightly. The camera is also completely crap on AOSP roms. Nexus devices are great but the N5 is old and the N6 is too big and expensive. The S5 lags too, and while Note 4 is supposed to be good, but I simply won't believe that Touchwiz lag is gone without seeing it with my own eyes. Even if it has gone, Touchwiz remains the ugliest skin I've ever seen. Sony phones are nice, but they aren't packaged anywhere near as tightly as the G3, which is it's biggest strength: 22mm shorter than an iPhone 6+, with the same size screen. That's impressive. HTC's are just ridiculously large for a given screen size. The 1+1 is old now, and doesn't support all LTE bands used in the UK.
There is no perfect phone. Whichever you choose, there are compromises to be made. However IMHO the G3 strikes the best compromise available today, at least once running the latest Lollipop build and with the tweaks I mentioned above applied.
Had most 2014 flagships and G3 is deff fav so far, didnt have KK as updated to LP out the box had little lag after ota but common just needed a factory reset and all good since
Just a tip you can use on any android phone, go to settings, developer options, and set all the animations to 0.5x. This drastically reduces the time the animations take, and it gives a very snappy experience. It makes a LOT of difference, trust me.
No lag whatsoever here. Im running Chupachups newest rom with rin kernel. I've previously owned htc one, lg g2, xperia z1 and this phone definitely outperforms them all.
Ive owned the Xperia Z1, HTC One M7, and tbh id rate this better than both, i would like the battery life to be better my Z1 was amazing for that buh im custom stock rom and i dont get lag, everything is as it should be.

Because LL is still unstable and buggy? And so is any rom based on it?..
Stock firmware sucks because of LG's software - it's very badly written. Almost as bad as touchwiz is. (I used SGS3, trust me on that one...)
AOSP/CM based firmwares are better, but they still suffer due do LL newness. Wait till android 5.1, things may become better.
There is also a hardware issue: unbelievably bad heat management. They used 8974ac, but had not made any cooling system. No radiators, no heat spread throughout the case, and it's facing LCD panel - which is a very bad radiator. GG WP, throttling kick in, phone starts to lag, etc etc etc.
I think there may be problem with your unit... Try to send it back to get a replacement or have it serviced.

I agree that most of the stock LG-G3 roms, Lollipop/Kitkat, if not rooted and without any mods, LAG is unavoidable. The case is, some people can't root their phones and most of them will try searching why G3 stock rom is lagging... if I'm one of them and I happen to see this post, I would feel bad and feel stupid at the same time why I spend money buying a crappy phone.
Well anyways, try Crash Rom v2.0. It is a stock based ROM like chupachups. The animation is not as fluid as CM but I won't say that it's lagging. Compared to CM, I have not yet encountered any bugs and mostly the camera is better. If you're interested you can also downgrade the resolution to 1080p, this will enhance your g3, 3d and 2d graphics performance.
Hi im all so on lollipop 5.0 updated out of the box and its all good maybe some lag not much to notice. Still no root method yet for stock lollipop 5.0 and i dont want to downgrade to kk so il have patience and wait for new root method for me g3
Wow, I went from the nexus 5, to the htc m8, to the g3 all in year. My advice, play with this one to get the phone lag gone. This by far is the best. Like a previous person said, turn off animations and change the launcher.

Can't be an issue with the phone, as it is lag free with CM based ROMS.

Already done all that. Animations are turned off, launcher animations are set to lightning fast, CPU throttling is turned off. I've tried all the tricks in the book. Fact is, LG based software is crap, just like Samsung.
So far today, the lock-screen has only frozen on me four times, which is good.
I'm not sure if I'd rather put up with a laggy phone or a buggy phone.
My phone is currently on V20h. Apart from the occasional Home launcher crash, I've not had any lag that I notice of. The last time there was any lag was on V10i. My phone is rooted but is not running any mods.
Prior to this, I've had the Note 3 and Xperia S. Compared to the G3, I would say that the smoothness is at the very least, on par with the Note 3 running on stock.
I've seen people complaining about the G3 being laggy too. Is your phone by any chance the 2 GB RAM version?
My phone is the 2gb version, but I always have at least close to 300mb free. Sometimes I have over 1gb free. Not that it should matter though, as I have read on numerous places that the 3gb version lags too, and that both phones are very close on performance. The extra 1gb of RAM is negligible.
Just flashing Crash ROM now. I think I'm going to regret it though, as I much prefer the look of AOSP anyway.
Ah crap. Just as I flash the ROM, I read that the dev is stopping support for our device. Based on the comments, it looks like a promising ROM.

Should I sell the LG g2?

Should I sell the lg g2 and get mi4C which is currently on discount for 173$.
I think it is a better phone and I also like miui a lot. I like the g2, but it is only 9 months old from the date I bought it and I know that a lot of people have yellow spots on the sreen after 1 year use.
I don't know if I should change with the mi4c. I like the g2. I am currently on cr droid android m and it is very fast.

Why are you thinking of that ? It is still a good phone . Development is still in motion .
Because the mi4 is a newer and better device with software that I like better
The sore point of the G2 is the slow, buggy stock ROM. One way to work around it is to install an AOSP based ROM, but you lose the stock camera and the ability to run certain banking and video streaming apps (because they seem to check for AOSP ROMs). The second options is perhaps to get a stripped down G2 lollipop ROM (only for d800). But if neither of these works out, I'd say sell it and get something else.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Most(/all) aosp roms are garbage - laggy, lower raw performance, no camera, poor stability, etc. They're experimental roms for enthusiasts to test, not like stock roms that are fast and stable which are meant to be used everyday. For some reason people delude themselves into thinking aosp is somehow better...
Op, if you like miui and want to spend the extra $ for the mi4c, then you should do it. It seems to be a much better phone.

I highly disagree with this post. I am not speaking for "most" AOSP ROMs. Just look at the well established ones: Cyanogenmod, BlissPOP, etc (I honestly think this is it, as far as good AOSP ROMS go). I had pretty much zero issues with Cyanogenmod ROMs on devices I have used them on. Of course, if you run the bleeding edge CM13 will have more bugs than the more stable and well established CM12.1. Right now I am running the last LG2-compatible official OmniROM, which is based on KitKat, on my G2 and this ROM was basically a revelation. It's incredibly, blazingly fast. So fast, that I think if I took away two cores and halved the clock speed of the remaining cores, there would still be no difference in speed or responsiveness, and it still would run fast. The stock 5.0.2 ROM on the other hand, seriously feels like its running on its last legs, specially if you multitask a lot. The lag can be real and very noticeable.
As for the camera, the advantages of the stock LG camera are highly exaggerated. It can take forever to focus, and often fails to focus, specially shooting videos. I downloaded every free camera app I could find on the play store onto the OmniROM install, and pretty much everyone of them is more than passable. Right now I am using Google camera, but HD Camera seems pretty satisfactory too (sans the ads in the free version). Overall, I'd say the LG camera is better, but it's not that much significantly better or more important to prevent me from using other ROMs.
I used reconstruction remix, blisspop, vanir and currently using cr droid android M. Even with android M I have no issues. Have been using it for about a month. Had one crash or two on one app. That is all. I really like it and it is very fast.
I like everything about this phone expect that you can't put tempered glass screen protector, because it doesn't fit good.
The mi4C is on a really good price atm for 170$. I like miui, new features, usb - c, sunlight display, better SOC, tempered glass will stick good, new device(Released 2015 September). The g2 is almost 3 years old. That is the thing that makes me wanna sell it. It is just old and I might get a yellow spot on the screen, because a lot of people have one.
The mi4C is really a better phone, but I am still not sure if I should do it, because I still like the g2, but on the other hand the mi4c is on a really good deal atm

Frustrating Lag Issues

So, I brought this phone two months ago, and have been using it since. However, I find it not very fun to use as there's always frustrating amounts of lag. (Especially in the UI)
On stock 6.0, the UI is a tad bit laggy, but bearable. However, games stutter. On the other hand, running stock 7.0, the UI is horrendously laggy, while games run fine.
I've tried every custom ROM that I could, but this device still seems to be very laggy when it comes to using it, almost to the point of being completely unusable. I do not leave apps open, and clear the cache often, so I don't know what the issue is. It's too late to return it now, too.
Anything I could do to make my phone usable?
This is disappointing, as even my old Moto E ran faster than this phone.

What defines lag in your book? Sure, there are a couple micro stutters when pulling the notification shade or switching apps, but lag is generally nonexistent. If you've come from a Pixel, S7, 6P, OP3, etc., then yeah, there's definitely a massive difference.
Also, it's definitely possible that your touchscreen may have issues as well.
Finally, I recommend the following ROMs (I've tried nearly all the ROMs here on XDA) for smoothness/battery:
- Beanstalk 7.1.2
- AOSP-CAF (discontinued but still very good)
- JX's Creampie (stock with mods)

The lag is mostly long UI stutters, but sometimes it gets really bad, especially on Lineage OS based roms. I have a feeling it's something related to single handed mode, though. I might try beanstalk soon.

I've recently installed Lineage on my brand new G4, and I honestly think the phone was better off on stock 7.0, as opposed to the custom rom. I'll agree i think the phone i just a bit stuttery/laggy at times.
I managed to make stock a lot faster by removing Greenify. Battery life seems to be better as well.
The problem does still stick around in Lineage-based roms, and I feel like One-handed mode causes this, since you can't turn it off.
EDIT: I prefer having root and all that.

Just found your post after searching for stutter in connection with one-handed mode. I only recently bought the G4 Plus as a temporary replacement for my broken Pixel and was a bit frustrated. I felt the G4 was quite stuttery, even tried a standard G5 in a store yesterday and thought "wow, that is a lot smoother.. well it just seems the G4 is a bit more stuttery. Today i compared it to my sisters G4 Plus, which was a lot smoother. You could really see the difference in scrolling and i thought it must be the digitizer or something. So before repackaging to return it to Amazon i tried a factory reset, voila, stutter gone. I tried activating one-haded mode again -> stutter. Deactivate one-handed mode -> stutter gone. So i guess that's the cause.
Disable any night-light app/setting and UI will run fine
