[Q] Low charge rate after some installations - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The device is charging at such a low rate that when at idle the battery level remains the same. This began after trying three different applications which are supposed to enable UMS, but which all fail to do so for the N900V. I also just recently installed SafeStrap, but I think this problem began before SafeStrap and it continues after uninstalling SafeStrap. I had also installed TWRP earlier in the day, but that was later replaced by SafeStrap. All of these applications have been uninstalled.
Yesterday I had it plugged into the laptop for several hours while I was away from home and experimenting with the UMS applications, then I made a 10 minute journey home and saw that the level was 95%. It should have been 100%. I plugged it into an external lithium battery and the charge finished while I was installing SafeStrap. Today I've had it plugged into the laptop for a couple of hours and the charge has remained at 93%. I got it to increase by a couple percent after being powered down for 10 minutes with a USB 3.0 cable into the externally powered laptop. Powered up with the screen off it increased 1% after 15 minutes, but after a couple seconds of screen on it lost that 1%.
It there something in the root that could have been altered which controls the charge rate? With the external lithium battery the transmit/receive lines are not used; could this be related?
EDIT 09:48:
I've confirmed that the external battery has a normal charge rate. The low charge rate is on the laptop and I'm certain it was as fast at the external battery until yesterday.
EDIT 2013-11-23 1259:
After some research I see that the PC's USB port does not normally output sufficient current to charge the Note 3, only a sufficient quantity to power it while it is in use. The statements I struck were confusion between my Note and Note 3. It seems to me though that when the Note 3 is powered off and plugged into the PC's USB port that the PC should output the higher current for battery charging, but I don't think this is happening on my laptop (with fully charged battery and on external power). This is unsatisfactory. I have a growing list of unsatisfactory Verizon Note 3 issues*.
Frank
* The Unsatisfactory List (items greater than simply undesirable)
1. Boot locked.
2. No UMS.
3. No USB battery charging (even if it is a PC issue).

Fix for battery drain when connected to PC

I'm not sure if this has been noted elsewhere but I couldn't find it if it was.
I ran into the problem yesterday in which my HD2 running WP7 would drain the battery if connected to the PC USB port instead of charging it. This was the first time my phone had done this and restarting the phone and switching USB ports did not result in any difference.
On a whim I decided to look in my device manager and there was an unknown device listed there. I selected it and had is search for and install the drivers and now it listed as USB Composite Device. Once that was done, the phone charged as normal.

that depends on the charging source.
if you use a laptop you will only be getting 200-300mA of current, a normal PC USB port will give you around 500mA, the wall charger will give you 1A (1000mA)
Now its not as simple as that as the device uses some of that power for working as we cant charge whilst off, so knock 100mA off it if the screen is on, on standby it'll be minimal so forget that.
1A charger should get you charged in ~1.5 hours
PC will double it to ~2.5 hours, some PCs do have 1000mA ports so say ~1.5-2.5 hours)
laptop could be ~4-6 hours (some laptops do have 500mA ports so say ~2.5-6 hours)
note you can get 2A quick chargers (~35min-45min, but i would be very careful with those an can ultimately lead to a shorter life span of the battery

Thanks for quick reply, i tried computer it took so long..
Although I'm using wall charger nowadays it takes more then 3-4 hours. Theres something wrong, When i had winmo6.5 the device was fully charged in 2.5 hours...

yeah that doesnt sound right, the battery its self is only 1230mA, the wall charger is 1000mA on standby within WP it should draw any more than 10mA but lets say 100mA on the extreme side, that gives you a net gain of 900mA every hour which is like 1 hour 20min.
I assume its the 1A charger that came with the device? check the adaptor and see what the current output is listed as
according to your figure of 3 hour charge time ( again, assuming from flat) that means its dumping around 400mA in to the battery an hour. That means one of two things
Firstly that your device is using an incredible 600mAh, that would be toasty and is unlikely!
Secondly, the charger isnt putting out 1000mA, more likely 500mA or 300mA
I suppose there is a third option, something gone wrong in the device its self, i cant think why it would tho, try running it near flat, restart it, make a note of the battery level then restarting again (you restart twice because WP on the HD2 has battery reporting issues) hold down the VOL down button on reboot which will take you in to the bootloader.
plug in the charger and leave for half hour, go back to windows and look at battery (remember to set the clock properly again!)
if the charger is 500mA it will have only charged to just less than 1/3
if its 1A it will be just less than 2/3 maybe half
the point of doing it in the bootloader is that you rule out WP and its dodgy drivers and will help to narrow down the problem
Check charge current in Battery tool apps. Battery current - positive figures are charging current.negative discharge.
To get high charging current(more than 200 ma) from power suply(wall or car) usb data lines must be shorted(fast charging mode). On ploperly made power supplies usb data shorted and phone can suck high current(700-800ma normaly not more).
Even if on charger written 1000ma it doesn't mean phone wil take all. what is written on charger - it is max allowed.

Indeed, although from my own tests it draws around 900mA, there is a large number of variables including power fluctuations on a dirty line regulated supplies, state of the battery, etc, its safe to play with estimates I think in this case without overcomplicating things, but the fact remains, on a wall charger that comes with the HD2 it should fully charge in around 1.5 hours unless it is not the same charger or something is wrong with it.

yes, with correct wall or car charger it charges in about 1.5 hours from almost empty to full.

[Q] Critical battery icon showing when powered on.

I left my phone charging overnight via the wall charger. Battery registered at 1% when I started the charge.
When I woke up this morning I had a large low battery icon on the screen and the phone won't turn on. I disconnected the charge, tried charging with another charger but everytime it shows the SAMSUNG logo, then the large low battery icon.
I tried removing the battery, cleaning the charger port terminals, swapped out different USB cords, everything but a hard reset.
No matter what I do the phone will not start up.
Has anyone experienced this before, or possibly no how to resolve it?

Happened to me several times (on both my focuses Rogers and AT&T), and I came to the conclusion it's a bug somewhere in the phone or the battery. I'm not sure exactly where the problem is (software, hardware) but I can tell you how I fixed it.
What happens is, the battery is almost depleted, it actually is 1%. The phone incorrectly reads that thinks it's charged fully and doesn't allow further charging the battery. So, you're not able to charge the battery correctly.
Now, as I previously stated in some other posts, I recommend having a standalone charger (Samsung i9000 ones are compatible are very cheap) as well as a secondary battery. The depleted battery gets charged fine in the standalone charger and when it passes 5% charge, it can be charged fine (again) in the phone.
This doesn't happen often, I believe it happened 5 times in more than 300 charging cycles (2 phones x 150 charges, I have them for over a year) so it's not that common.
I also found that it *may* work if you charge the battery in another phone.
As a general thumb rule, it's important not to leave the battery to completely discharge, and connect the charger/usb when it reaches about 40% (when you can, ofc). Please refer to my post here to see how you can preserve battery life.

roms for fast charging

hey guys i bought my niece a 2012 nexus 7 it has the axus charge with different usb cable but it charge so slow
i was wondering if there is a rom with better charging speed
i havent root and is wifi version
What does "so slow" mean? As in, how many minutes to change 10% in charge?
One thing you can do to troubleshoot things is to see how long it takes to charge the tablet when it is completely shut off. It should be pretty obvious that "the ROM" has absolutely nothing to do with that scenario. Wait till the tablet is discharged to about 10%, shut it off, and charge it for 90 minutes. If it is charging normally it will be close to 70% charge when you boot it back up.
If your tablet charges slowly in that case, then there is a problem with the charger, cable, or battery in the tablet - not the ROM. So, you should surely check that out first before you start worrying about software.
A nominal N7 (2012, WiFi) will charge from 5% to 100% in about 150 minutes: 2.5 hours. That's with a STOCK ROM. If you look at the battery capacity, that works out to a minimum 1.73A charging rate. (4.325 Amp-hours / 2.5 hours = 1.73 A). It's actually higher than that because a certain amount of charging current is "lost" to heat generation while charging.
The tab will ALWAYS charge slower than that if it is in use, especially if the screen is on and the owner is doing things like streaming data or playing games. If it is under heavy use, the tablet itself could easily dissipating 1.0 A of current... so in that case the 2.5 hour charging time would be over twice as long: over 5 hours.
The "fast charge" ROMs are not what you are thinking. "fast charge" there means "fast charge under conditions normally restricted to low currents when data transfer is taking place". If you are using a charge-only cable (such as the OEM charger and cable), the tablet should always be able to draw close to 2A of current with ANY ROM - there is no data connection present, and the tablet is not restricted in the current it can draw.
The ROMs don't really throttle the battery charging rate except in that very specific condition: when there is a data connection present. So, worrying about which ROM is installed really only applies to people that want to use a Y-cable and a live USB data connection (tethering or an OTG gadget attached) - for instance in car installs or maybe with data tethering via USB.
good luck

Get a better cable. I was using a third party cable on my Nexus 7 for a while and realized it was only charging about 10-15%/hr.. Changed the cable out for a better one and it charges at the normal rate now, 30%/hr or so.
Do check for loose connections for both battery connector and usb ribbon connector (under speakers). I’ve opened the back cover to check after slow charging problems and was solved by opening and clipping back the usb ribbon connector. Charging's back to normal now.

[Q] USB charging difficulties

Nexus 7 2012. CM 11 M2 Grouper, - 3-5 hours use daily - Unit is 20 months old.
Until for the first time while playing a game, allowed the device to attempt recharge while continuing with the game after getting a 14% low Battery warning flash on screen.
Factory Charger and connection cable..(this is a 2100 mA strength charger)
The device went dead despite being connected to a charger.
the device went totally dead as the battery drained completely.
the problem appeared to be that the device stayed on and drained the battery.
Opened up the device and charged the battery with a home-made cable - good to go..(98%)
the process involved using 4 sewing needles inserted into the battery connection and crocodile clips to attach, this ensures that the battery is receiving equal current to each side.
this can be done with any type of standard charger but will take longer. the beauty of using the factory charger is that the recharge will only take 3 hours verses 10 hours for a 500 mA type charger. the chargers stop automatically when the battery is fully charged, this would lead one to deduce that any control circuitry related to battery charge levels is inside the charger.
reconnected battery and assembled the unit.
Followed google instructions and used boot menu to switch off device.
turned on device as normal.
Did a factory data reset and wiped all user information.
Set screen brightness to minimum & set battery % inside the charging icon.
Turned off the wi-fi and nfc and everything that could affect battery life.
the device is showing a charging icon when powered off but the battery is not increasing in charge
the device makes a nice noise when the charger is connected.
the device shows the charging symbol in the status bar
the device is not charging and a computer cannot recognise the device.
the device makes charging noises and indications when connected to the computer
the device is not actually charging at all.
there is no apps that could be using unnecessary power. I have stopped the google play service etc. there is only 3 services running.
the loss of power is continuous, even when powered off the device battery continues to loose power.
I am presuming that there is a short circuit within the power sub assembly that is causing this continuous power loss. My reasoning for this is that the operating system is functioning and capable. A fault within the micro usb could cause the effects mentioned above.
the only possible faults are the micro usb port and or the cable that connects the power sub circuit to the motherboard. the cable runs under the battery and the pins are micro size. (it would take 2 people to properly analyse this cable.)
regardless of my particular fault, the advice that i would seek is in regard to any test that I should do to prove either way which part I need to replace.
is there a way to bypass the micro usb connection and power the device via the cable that connects to the motherboard
I have used many different micro usb leads and chargers. The factory charger and lead will charge other devices.
windows 7, windows 8.1, linux mint and ubuntu 14.04 are the different computer systems that will not recognise the device although they will appear to be charging the device without actually increasing the charge at the battery.
I have not found any other nexus users with a similar problem.
Using a moto g, samsung GT9305i, Samsung 5380i, Samsung 5570, all rooted and custom roms.
I will Bluetooth a ROM to the nexus and attempt installation.
Just to eliminate any doubts that could be related to using the m2 version of CyanogenMod 11

V20 Declining Charge Rate

Rooted H910, running de-bloated stock image
Last week, while reading news sites in a lobby, my phone got extremely hot. Also, battery percentage dropped like a rock - like from 70% to 35% in less than 10 minutes.
I shut the phone down, pulled the battery, and allowed to cool.
On reboot, I went through the Apps list, and Force Stopped everything - even disabling Chrome.
When plugged into my travel charger (QC 3.0), the phone reported that it was "charging slowly - use the charger and cable provided with the phone".
Charge rate was agonizingly slow. May 2% in 10 minutes.
Later, I tried the QC 3.0 in my vehicle, and still later I tried the other QC chargers and Fast chargers I have at my house.
In all cases, it reported it was charging slowly.
It was, however, still charging - albeit very slowly.
I dug out my factory LG charger and cable. Same result.
In fact with the phone off, it reports the factory charger and cable are incompatible with the phone.
[see image 1]
I swapped my battery to another LG V20 phone. The battery charged normally in the other phone.
My phone still charged slowly with the other battery.
Over the weekend, I tried Clearing Cache / Dalvic.
On reboot from that, it would no longer charge. It still reported charging slowly, but battery percent would drop while plugged in.
Per this thread, I tried Doing Port / Battery / Charge Tests.
[see images 2 & 3]
No improvement. Battery level still declines while plugged in.
If I start with a fully charged battery, battery usage appears normal.
Anything other suggestions to try before calling LG?
