[APPS] Must Have Apps for Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Themes and Apps

Hi guys,
I just got Nexus 5 as my 2nd phone.
Here I want to share some of the must have apps specifically for Nexus 5, similar thread I had created for other Sony Xperia Range & Samsung Galaxy Range (you can check the link in my Signature).
I will keep updating the list regularly, if you any awesome app specific to Nexus 5, please suggest !!
Note: I will NOT include apps which requires ROOT, for best root related apps check this thread created by Android_United
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569607
--------------------------------------------
BEST FILE MANAGER - Solid Explorer
BEST LAUNCHER - Nova Launcher
BEST VIDEO PLAYER - MX Player
BEST DIALER - ExDialer
BEST WALLPAPERS - Wallbase
BEST PHOTO EDITOR - Pixlr
BEST NEWS APP - News Republic
--------------------------------------------
TOP APPS FOR GOOGLE NEXUS 5
SLIDING MESSAGING PRO - if you missing stock Messaging app, this is for you
ANDROID 4.4 SCREEN RECORD - a new way to capture video of your device's screen. Screen Record runs this command and saves the video file for you
MOVES - Moves automatically tracks your everyday life and exercise. Just carry your phone in your pocket or bag
BATTERY PERCENT FOR KITKAT - install this App and click on "Enable Battery Percent". Then reboot. You can uninstall the App afterwards. The setting will remain (by XDA user kroegerama)
====================================================
POWER CONTROLS best, no need of any other toggle app or battery status bar app, its all in one. Alternative: SWITCH PRO WIDGET
NEWS REPUBLIC - Awesome view, one of the best apps for all the news and info, I like it more than Flipboard.
EZPDF READER - the best PDF reader available.
RECEIPT - quickly make shopping lists and review previously bought items
PIXLR EXPRESS - More than 600 effects, overlays, and borders to personalize any image, free. Recommend
SCREEN MAKER - allows to connect 2 images: screenshot and smartphone image
SPLASHTOP - easiest and fastest remote desktop app to access your Windows or Mac
ULTIMATE CUSTOM WIDGET (UCCW) - Make your own widgets easily
BUSINESS CALENDAR - one of the best I found
EXPENSE MANAGER - best of its kind, best UI for mobiles & tablets
CALL POP OUT - An incoming call WILL NOT interrupt us while we are playing a game, reading Flipboard, surfing web. This nature of Android phone disturbs us and cost you time, concentration, feeling.

Why would you consider solid explorer better than es file explorer? I haven't used solid explorer yet so I'll check it out since you think highly of it.

Followed Solid Explorer since the beta, gladly bought it once it went gold. I especially like it for its cloud explorer and its two-pane arrangement.
Two things I miss, and have been requested, are key-based authentication for SSH, and file selection (as in, get a file path from another application), which isn't working as desired.
It's not troubling me too much since I have workarounds for both (Namely AndFTP and OI File Manager).

It is a great file manager and has a beautiful interface. Highly recommended!

Another +1 for solid explorer. I've tried all the others and haven't looked back.

GMD Gesture Control with navbar hidden man!

For the first time in the five odd years on android, and only for this phone, Play music. And not just for streaming. Try playing the same track back to back using it and another player. I guess its the new low battery audio stuff. Also, its not an app,but the moto x dalvic patch is incredible.

+1 for solid explorer, i like the blue folders theme!

Solid Explorer + Root Explorer the best!

I too like solid explorer, however, a very very very nice alternative is FX File Explorer. It also has very nice UI, cloud options, and root options

It's not bad, but I'm used to using Rings Extended because I have music on my phone that I would like to choose as a ringtone. I don't want to necessarily use another app to trim down a song and save a copy into the Ringtones folder.

I am using
power toggles
go sms pro
ex explorer
ex task manager
feedly
adobe reader
app ops
applock
appsales
barcode scanner
camscanner
cpy spy
goggles
greenify
msecure
mightytext
pocket
swiftkey
hope that helps

Ahem..

The ability to resize the navbar and keep the menu button available at all times has been a great improvement. Xposed is really neat.

Apps you love

Hello i am new to these forums and i have been reading a lot of the developer section.I have noticed their are a few apps that are used quiet frequently for battery life, messaging systems, etc.
What are some of the apps that you use that without them you think your android experience would be hindered?
PyRo
Juicedefender
Autostarts
Tasker
Beautiful Widgets
Pure Music Widget
Launcher Pro Plus
definitely launcher pro plus. I'm a big fan of weather forecast widget as well. It does weather + calender. I pair that with digital clock widget for my home screen. (used to use beautiful widgets which is also awesome)
Personal pet peeve..."droid" is a verizon/lucas arts thing. Around these parts, we use "android". I hate big red and what they did with that campaign....made a bunch of people assume its all the same.
But to answer thr question, adw launcher is a must have, but I like vanilla android. Might not be your thing. Only other apps I use regularly is angry birds, xda tapa talk, and tweet deck. I use all the stock android apps and a few others occasionally.

-_- well so you did.
i think i will answer my own question now
JuiceDefender
Alarm Clock Plus
Beautiful widgets
Appbrain
MSN Talk
Autostarts is a must
Advanced Task Killer
Pandora (to stream music through bluetooth to my car)
Batstat widget (because themes with 1% increments are iffy)
Sdx stock app remover (just be careful)
Cityjump (addicting game)
Dropbox (online storage to void having to connect my phone to pc)
ES file explorer (ui is easy to navigate and works as root explorer with most custom kernels)

Quick Desk,
I use it every day. When i'm surfing the web, and forget to turn on Wifi, or need to run an app I get there quickly. Brings me right back to my webpage after that. Every android phone I have runs Quick desk It's a must have for me.
Launcher pro plus
Jorte (calendar that shows agenda in month view)
Weather forecast widget
Google map
Google listen
Google voice
Tapatalk
Engadget
I use these every day.

what is this Autostarts app?
i use juicedefender sometimes but its really not a must for as i havent seen a noticeable difference with my battery life yet.. but the must have apps that i install right away everytime i do a wipe are: advanced task killer, Handcent sms (i cant use the stock sms anymore, looks and feels nasty lol), launcher pro plus, setcpu..
Juice defender makes a massive difference if you set it up correctly. If you set it up to enable data every 5 minutes, its obviously going to have less of an effect than if you allow it to enable data less often. Also, if you don't enable the screen option then there is no point even running it.
Hmm most of the things i love were already mentioned previously in this post. (Beautiful widgets, Pandora, autostarts, angry birds, Launcher pro plus) some others I definitly enjoy though include:
Widgetlocker (Custom-make your lock screen with widgets/sliders)
Folder Organizer (Lets you create folders on homescreens that auto-sort/change icons)
Handcent SMS (free SMS App wit alot of cool customization/features. Definitly dosen't do anything special for me just looks very cool and is super customizable.
Why would anyone use advanced task killer?
I have rarely experienced a need to kill an app with Epic. If I need to, I can use Epic task manager.
Using advanced task killer can do more harm than good.

You can use the default Task manager which works good, but the difference in Quick Desk is that you can run Widgets doing a Long press on the Search key
for instance when you long press the search key, it brings up Another Transparent Page (just like the touch wiz page) you can add widgets, add icons anything, I put switch pro widget right on it. I keep my home page looking clean and sleek then i put widget and junk on quickdesk.
might be good for some might not.

Nice Launcher, however, I prefer LauncherPro.
My only reason is that I've got used to it and now a change would be uncomfortable.

Yep. Amazing app. They keep on adding new features. The circular app drawer is the latest addition. I wanted that badly, and got it without even asking the dev.

Tried for a while, but i still prefer LauncherPro it's faster and snappier for me.
One think that I think that would te a good improvment is the tabs for the apps|recent|task manager being a little thinner, I think that they are stealing large space from the drawer. I felt the app drawer a bit too compact
Themes incorporation is really cool btw!
Gratz
I'm testing it for the last 5-6 months, and I can say that it's an great launcher, improving from version to version, BUT I still prefer LauncherPro, for one, but one crucial thing.
And it is the App Drawer.
So to be more specific, I have SE Xpera Mini Pro (remember, it's that small phone, with display resolution of 240x320 pixels), and I never liked the appearance and design of default home launcher of Xperia. And I decided to test LaucherPro, and I was amased by the way it looks and the way it works. Smooth, fast, customisable, and so...
So then I found out about GO Launcher and decided to test it. And, at the first look I was amased even more than with LauncherPro, but then I found out that app drawer is rendering icons in very bad way, because of its tight space. Upper tabs (all / recent / running) are taking too much space, so icons are placed very tightly, and if you don't turn icons labels off, they are overlaying icons below them, and it looks very very ugly.
Developers could solve this by including option to remove upper tabs or by including 3x3 grid option in app drawer. But neither of that is ever included.
And I never had this kind of problems in LauncherPro, so I have to stick with LauncherPro for now, untill they solve this, or untill I change my phone.
Cheers.
very beautiful.i like it

Honeycomb Launcher BETA

Hello everyone!
We have developed a new launcher once again! This is not the standard launcher that everyone makes. This is a Honeycomb Launcher. This launcher basically clones Android 3.0 Honeycomb as best as possible! Although this launcher is new, it clones Android 3.0 very well. Every update will bring more resemblance to0!
Anyways, the launcher is available on the Android Market now. All you have to do is search for Honeycomb Launcher. We have a BETA version which we run all of our tests on and a Donate version which is more stable and keeps our development going!
Honeycomb Launcher has many features that are in Android 3.0 and which are not in other launchers such as quick menus and much more. But one of the main features of this launcher is the girds for icons and widgets. The Portrait grid is a 10x10 and the landscape grid is 10x8. Which this means is the size and spots available for icons. The large grid-views will allow for you to place your icons and widgets in almost any place you want!
Screen shots are below!

really neato!
Just one thing: Whenever I want to move anything (either it be from the homescreens or from the app drawer)it lags a lot for like 3 seconds.
Also, sometimes when dragging from the AppDrawer it FCes.
HTC Wildifire
Stock 2.2.1
EDIT: Also, whenever I try to tick any of the settings in the Customise Honeycomb menu, I get FCed.
Ya we are fixing that! It is because of the grid size : (
but it is easy to fix. All you have to do is drag a widget on the screen and a few icons. Once you put a few icons and what not on the screen it speeds up quite a bit!! It is really weird. Maybe because when there is not a lot on the screen it has a lot to move over to get to a designated spot.
But dont worry, we will fix it : )
Thank you for that info
I will keep track if this topic/launcher since it obviously has potential
Thank you!
If anyone has any requests or want anything to be added let us know and we will add it in future updates!
Well, for one I'd like to see it be fully supported in QVGA.
When in portrait a part of the screen is missing, to be more precise the "back" button part of the screen.

I tried this and to be honest, the soft keys need some work, they just seem kinda unfinished in my opinion, they need to be bolded or something along those lines.
new setting nevr applies and it force closes
and hide notification dosnt even work
Hey for those who did not like to the look of the softkeys or just wanna change them, or if you just wanna make the add button more visible etc i have a way. Okay all you have to do is open the apk archive in 7zip and then follow these steps.
For example, to change the home key from the white and gray preset to the well known blueish-transparent download the hc3d add-ons (just search on xda). Next you need to double click res in the 7zip archive. After that click the drawable_hdpi folder once and drag it to your desktop. After that, locate the image you wanna use (i recommend the hc3d add ons) and copy and paste it into your desktop shortcut. Next, delete the current home_dock_button and rename your copy/pasted file as home_dock_button. You can also open them up and edit them to the proper size. (WRITE DOWN THE SIZES YOU NEED BEFORE DELETING THE IMAGE.). You can also open your new image and edit color, etc. To make your buttons now visible (like when the add button is only half shown) go back into your drawable_hdpi and find the image called line_break. All you half to do is open it and edit it to whatever size you want. i used 455x36. After you have edited whatever you want drag and drop the drawble_hdpi back into the 7zip archive for the apk. After this copy and paste back into your sd card.
If you try to install after this it will not work so you will need to download two apps. The first is signapktic and the second is Linda Manager (or any file manager of your choice). Open signapktic and locate the file you want then just go through its steps. This will resign the apk so it can be installed. Finally just open up your file manager, install, and enjoy. You will have to follow these steps evertime you try to edit a png/xml in the app so it is quite a tedious process.

Edit; nice launcher, has potential. An option to hide the launcher icon in top right and long press on screen to bring up list of apps to choose from. Hide status bar would be great to. Just some suggestions. Thanks for the launcher

I really like to include this in my ROM. Is it, or is it ever going to be, open source?

I'd suggest option for different layouts for portrait and landscape
fc when replacing app icon from gallery.

Beautiful!
You should add some custom fonts.. or use the new Roboto slim.
Good job!

add some bounce-back scroll effect option to homescreen..

How about gesture controle for open app drawer, something like swype up. So we wont lost that many space for app drawer icon.
Add possibility to create folder tiles^^
Great work until now.

Also add stacking / folder feature in a tile shape. Overall looks amazing.. I'll be taking screenshots & maybe make a video when you release new updates. I'm here if you need help! Tester/Graphic Design, ect.
Oh god you are the same dev that used to make those really nice notification drawer additions plus AOKP toggles to cm.*instant downloads the app*

Hiding the drawer icon is definitely something I'm considering However I have a few ideas to improve it as well, perhaps a sort of "quick launch bar" in a row where the icon is currently located.

No problem buddy! Im trying to find more bugs and ways to make it better...Last night when I downloaded the APK and tried to install it my phone wouldn't let me cuz it said "App not installed. An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed." The way I tried to install it was using Root Explorer and just over writing the app by installing the new APK but i guess something is going wrong with the signature cuz ive never seen this happen...so I just went to the playstore and uninstalled it from there and re-installed the new copy from there....But i still have one more issue. Whenever you install a new launcher from the play store and immediately after you click the home button the OS prompts you which launcher do you want to use..i have 3 launchers installed (Nova, Chameleon, & Tile) But the OS never prompts me which launcher do I wanna use...
UPDATE: Alright so I got it working now. Android now prompts for the launcher >>> https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Byxlw5J4qbOvZDNKY21yV282TGM
But one more bug I found is that whenver you go to the widgets in the app drawer and you drag for example Airdroid 4x1 Widget Tile Launcher crashes.
This is extremely promising... Keep this up, if you play you're cards right, you may just have the most "innovative" launcher out there

Hmm ok. Are you on ICS? Dropping widgets is still being worked on, added it to the known issues list now.
As for prompting for the launcher, it should prompt you every time you install a new launcher, strange if it didn't. It's possible to go to Apps -> Your current home launcher -> Clear defaults to make it prompt if that happens again.
I'll be returning home this weekend, hope to get a new build out soon Cheers

i love this launcher!!
here some ideas:
- make it more flexible (the user no more needs to sets numbers of colums and rows)
then:
- option to choose min tile size (width and height)
- option to choose from horizontal scrolling or vertical scrolling in home
- option to choose paginated scrolling (regardless scrolling orientation) in home
- drawer categories
- option to enable google search bar near the app drawer button
- option to replace the launcher menu in app drawer with google play shortcut (or another app)
- fix custom color (can't set a custom hex color on nexus s cm10)
add these features even in a paid version and i'll buy it
keep it on!!

Weather Information
You can add weather module to watch face, the weather information is broadcast by application on the phone. To receive this broadcast you need register. Weather action is :
String ACTION_WEATHER_CHANGE = "cn.indroid.action.weather.freshwidget";
The broadcast use JSON as data format:
weather_full: {conditions:"Cloudy",high:"22",low:"14",code:"26",temp_unit:"℃"}
conditions:current weather
high:high temperature
low:low temperature
temp_unit:temperature unit
code:weather code

Not that I know of the dial, background and hands are each separate images! Well I guess they could be the same image but might look a bit funny unless there is a way to use spite like data somehow? I'm looking into it, and I will keep posting the progress
I mean that having one watchface with the img files (dial, bg and hands) in a data folder on sdcard like x:/customwatchface/dial.img and not into the apk file, so we can change it when we want.
Mi english isn't good xD

So, I gave this a shot, and I've easily made a watch face that I like, but getting the UCCW widget to allow me to add a saved widget is proving to be an issue for me. Would you mind maybe providing some instructions on how you got the widget onto the watch's home screen? What file(s) are you transferring to the watch and to what folder on the watch? I've tried the .zip, .uzip, and .uccw files for my saved widget with no luck. I've installed UCCW on the watch as well and all I get is a blank white widget and no option to choose my clock face.
BTW... I love the idea of being able to make our own faces using UCCW... just need to nail down how to make it available on the watch. Thanks for the tip!

Since it was a few months ago I can't remember if I sideloaded the UCCW app or loaded it from the Play Store. After I make the clock widget I save it as a .uzip and copy it from the uccwOutput folder on my phone and drop it into the uccwOutput folder on the watch. I open it with ESfile Explorer and click on the .uzip file. it opens the file as a png i believe. after that i close it out and move to the home screen and open a UCCW widget. After that I choose like a 2x2 size and the widget I made is in the list.
Another I go about it since I don't have access to a PC. I link my watch and my phone with the Screenshare app. I save the .uzip file to dropbox and use the screenshare browser to go to my dropbox and sync the page to the watch and download it straight to the watch. I've found just by clicking the uzip folder in the broswer download folder uploads it to UCCW on the watch without moving the file from folder to folder in the watch.
I also use Apex launcher as my default launcher. I hide the notification bar and the dock so the widget takes up the whole screen. I also have gestures to bring them back or to toggle settings or open apps.

There-in lies the issue... I was trying to load this UCCW widget in the stock launcher. I never get the selection option in the stock launcher so that's a no go for UCCW there. I may have to try Apex or try Nova again. I just felt that Nova was a bit overkill for something that is supposed to be elegantly simple. I wonder if there is another custom widget app that I can use to design the same watch face and apply it as a widget on the stock launcher?
