put in a new SSD and got Windows 8.1, did a fresh install on a new hard-drive, everything's been working great, My nexus 4 has worked with with ADB./Fastboot and I've been able to transfer files to and from it in MTP mode. Been like that for about 4 days until about 3 hours ago, I had Windows Explorer crash, had to run Task Manager, end the process, and then manually restart explorer.exe My device was plugged in when this happened, and afterwards, I noticed that I could no longer see my Nexus 4 under the Devices & Drives section of "This Computer" (My Computer had a better ring to it lol) First I tried rebooting both my laptop and my Nexus 4, then I tried uninstalled the drivers, rebooting, re-installing, and then rebooting again. Did that like 4 times now, each time re-downloading the drivers, and doing an MD5 hash to create a Checksum, and checking them each time. Also to no avail. ADB shows my device serial number when i enter : ADB Devices, but says it's unauthorized, so if I try anything like: ADB Reboot Bootloader, it says Device is not authorized.
So ! I don't understand wtf is going on. Was working fine before. The drivers are up to date, I just flashed the Official OTA image, and was on the leaked image prior to that. Then earlier this evening I switched to the newest version of the Nexus 5 Port, and everything was still working fine, hadn't made any changes in a couple hours before this happened. When I install the drivers, It acts like it worked. Instead of saying "NEXUS 4" under Other Devices in my Device Manager, it says Composite ADB Interface under Android Devices and MTP under Portable Devices. Sometimes tho the MTP entry will still show the Yellow Exclamation Point. But goes away. Don't know whats up with that either.
Also, it wont let me install drivers unless I am in MTP mode, which Usually you can install them regardless (tho I never tried in Camera mode, I am just assuming about that one) Usually I install drivers without MTP or Camera modes checked, but now if I try it, it says that Windows Cant find the Drivers, even tho I am obviously browsing for them myself and selecting them. And just now I tried updating instead of re-installing them, and it keeps saying that Windows has determined they are the most up to date.
So I am out of I ideas. I even updated windows media player cause that's what fixed my issue on Day 1 of running Windows 8.1 when it wouldn't recognize it at all. So I don't know. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to make sure I got everything in there so hopefully someone can narrow down what the issue is. Cause I've been at it for 3 hours, haven't slept yet, my Nexus 5 gets here today, and I need to get this fixed before I sell it to my buddy. Its brand new, only 15 days old.*

Then disable USB Debugging on the phone and get MTP to work first, Windows should be able to install it automatically.
For ADB, Windows 8 will not allow to install unsigned driver. To install unsigned driver, reboot Windows 8 into Advanced startup and press F7 at the menu to disable driver signature (Google it if you don't know how). Although you could install Google USB driver which is signed I think, I recommend using Universal Naked Driver (link in sig.)

ok I am gonna try that now. And as far as the part about my phone being unauthorized. I already knew about the notification that pops up, i was waiting for it to happen. Never did tho. Maybe it will happen after I do the rest of what you said. thanks, i will post my results in a min
no matter what i do, i cant get MTP working. When i uninstall the ADB entry in Device Manager it gives me the check-box option for removing drivers as well, but not on MTP. And now it wont even give me the option to uninstall, update, or anything at all, even tho I uninstalled it already so it should at least give me the option to install drivers. Even tho it's showing up in Device Manager as a Portable device, if I look in Printers and Devices, it shows up as unspecified device. Disabled USB Debugging, and all that. it says its working but it wont show up in My Computer>Devices and Drives still. For some reason ever once in awhile it will pop up with the Yellow Exclamation Point tho, only for a brief second tho. other then that, its shows it like it's running correctly. Also, nothing pops up saying that windows is installing drivers when i plug it in. Which in Win 7, XP, etc, it always did. Does this not happen in Windows 8.1 ?
Also, under Driver Details, which is the only option it lets me click on MTP, it says the drivers are from 2006 lol
Update - Just reinstalled the drivers for ADB and enabled USB Debugging, and everything is still saying its working even tho its not. But when I take my phone out of MTP mode it shows up in device manager under "Other Devices" as Nexus4, with a Yellow Exclamation, and it gives me the option to update drivers, so i tried, but it says Windows Can't find my driver. This is very frustrating.
Had this problem aswell, which was caused by the N version of Windows 8 versions.
These versions dont have Windows Media Player istalled, which is needed for MTP to work.
So to fix your problem you need to download that latest Windows Media Player (WMP) from microsoft and install that.
I dont have the N version, I have WMP installed, i mentioend your fix in the OP. Had to update it, and it worked. It was working fine for the last few days, then it stopped working suddenly

Vouch. Since I use win8.1 (no n version) Mtp doesnt work. I tried all known drivers, disabled driver signature and so on. The only working combination for me is Usb Debugging + PTP. Then I use file manager to cut the files. Airdroid would be an alternative as well.
update - SOLVED * Kind of.....I say kind of cause I still don't know what caused it but apparently Flashing to the Nexus 5 Port fixed the issue lol. I am assuming something pertaining to the way USB connectivity is controlled by Android got corrupted, and a fresh install was in order. Whatever it was, it worked and i am back in business. thanks to all those who attempted to help.

Ok so a little background. After hearing about the Carbon backup app a while ago I decided to install it and followed the instructions to do so. One of these steps is to change the normal USB drivers to the ATB ones from the Android SDK. I did this and it all went well without a hitch. However I came to add some movies on to my nexus 7 today and it would only recognize my device in PTP mode (as per the Carbon app requires). I proceeded as normal but found that I could not create a new folder for my films. When i tried i was faced with this error:
However I found that I could create a new folder in one of the existing sub-directories so I proceeded with that. I started copying the movie files over and got another pop up looking like this:
After clickking yes I was soon faced with another error screen:
This happens for nearly every video file i have tried to transfer. I have tried uninstalling the ADB drivers and letting windows install the default drivers it used the first time, however now it will not find any driver software for my nexus 7 unless I point it to the ADB drivers. Whenever I try to connect my device as an MTP device instead of PTP windows will not recognise it and nothing will show up in my computer. Is there any way that i can defer back to the default drivers and use my device on MTP instead of PTP?
Just for a bit of extra info, the same problem is occurring on my nexus 4.

Hmm, i have adb drivhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2214386alongside stock drivers for mtp as im sure many do n do not face this problem.
Have you uninstalled the backup app and cleaned the registry?
Try going in to device manager and enable 'show hidden devices' and search for any leftover usb drivers or interface that might interfere with the stock drivers. As a last resort you can download your usb chipset drivers, then uninstall all chipset drivers and usb devices including those hidden, then reinstall the chipset and other drivers u may need. Eg.printer drivers, then try again.
Previously i had a sony erricson phone and it's SE's software screwed up the usb interface n i wasnt able to connect anythin thru usb mtp. That helped me. Alternatively, if u have system restore on you can try restoring to a date before this all happened.
Also, check your device for any apps or settings that might interfere usb functions like usb debugging altho it's rare. Not sure what you did but you might have semi/permanently broken some settings in the device...if you had an earlier backup which was flawless, try restoring to that first. Remember to play safe when doing all troubleshooting, windows isnt exactly smart with device drivers =< worse case you have to reset both the usb drivers and device if nothing works...

i faced the same problem last week. what i do is go through step by step like what nexus root toolkit suggest. start from scratch. remove all previous drivers and reinstall. Follow to the letter what it says. So the problem is just probably of a bad driver stuff. Remember to restart too.

What OS are you using? Windows? Mac? A linux distro?
Also, are you sure you're using MTP instead of PTP (Settings > Storage > menu > Usb Computer Connection) ?
You can try to install google's drivers from the android sdk as well.

I am using Windows 7, it was set to PTP, I just set to MTP, but it still does the same thing. I have turned off my USB debugging in the developer menu as well.

I know this is a silly thing to ask, but have you tried rebooting your phone? Something like this happened to me before and a reboot fixed it.
Also, if you have a custom kernel, check that you have USB fast charge disabled. And after that fails, try installing google's drivers. Sorry, I'm just spouting out random ideas at this point.

Use trickster mod and go to the Kernel Specific page. If fast charge is ticked off, there's not much we can do from there.

Hmm I am in the trickster mod on the kernel specific screen, but I don't see anything about USB fast charge Where might I get googles drivers? I can't seem to install any drivers because as soon as I uninstall the unknown device, it auto installs some drivers.

So I tried installing the newest Franco kernel Milestone (3), and the USB fast charge is off. I also tried installing a different CM mod, but there is no difference. I also tried installing the universal you gave me, but that didn't work, and i installed the google driver from SDK and that didn't work.
I don't know what else to do...
Hi, try to completly unninstall ALL drivers for nexus, samsung or android related, than install official drivers for nexus 4 and then connect nexus 4. Should work.

I tried that, no luck...I don't know what else to do, I have tried 3 different cables. I tried using the drivers that come with the nexus 4 toolkit, but no luck. It charges when plugged in, but i get nothing else. Also it seems like half the time its not even in the device manager as an unrecognized device, and then it intermittently pops up a window saying unrecognized device detected... maybe my USB port is broken on the phone?
Is there something simple I have overlooked to get 4.2.2 to work with my computer?

No, I tried for hours with no luck. I am glad I am not the only one, hopefully a solution will come to us. I have been using airdroid to transfer files from my phone in the mean time.
Im also having the same issue except my computer only recognizes my phone when its connected as a camera.

I am having a similar problem with my daughter's Nexus 4 phone, which is not rooted nor unlocked - it is still completely stock. It was just updated to Android 4.3, however I can't say that this is the cause of the problem because she never attempted to connect her phone to the desktop machine before.
I have a Windows 7 x64 box at home, and spent over two hours last night trying to get the computer to correctly recognize the Nexus 4 phone. I was hoping that the standard MTP Windows driver would handle it perfectly, but no luck. I tried the Google usb drivers, and the ADB interface was recognized, but still no access to the internal storage. I then gave the Naked Drivers a try, and no joy there either.
I am beginning to suspect that the MTP drivers on my desktop are munged, but do not relish the thought of a Win 7 wipe and reinstall.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I am having a similar problem where I have USB storage set to MTP and Windows doesn't pick it up, whereas PTP Windows will pick up but I can't access any folders other than the camera related folders like DCIM.
So my workaround is doing it the old fashioned way through CMD in windows using adb push.
Example:
Assuming you have all the stuff you want to transfer in a folder called stuff, adb is located in C:\adb, and your folder known as stuff is also in C:\adb:
C:\adb>adb push stuff /data/media/0
The above command starting from the ">" will transfer all files in the folder called stuff to the root of /sdcard. In the N4, /sdcard is symbolically linked to /data/media/0.
Of course you need USB debugging enabled for this to work...
Device Manager (Hopefully this helps)
In the start menu type device manager, in that window you should see android and or something similar at the top. You want to drop the menu down and right click what should say Google ADB Interface and delete it, make sure you check the confirmation box. After reboot your computer! Once booted plug your phone in a viola!!!

I can open device manager but there in no Android anything listed. All that comes up when I plug my phone in is 'unrecognized usb device'. I have 5 different cable I have tired. The OS will only bring up the usb error in a USB 3.0 port. It will not do anything if I use the 2.0 port.
I have gone and tried to manually update the drivers through the device manager but when I select the drivers from Android SKD or any of the other driver packs I get an error that it is not a x64 driver.
I found one suggestion about modding the driver to include the device but windows will not even recognize the device other than a unknown usb.
I'm going to have a bricked computer soon. Any help would be appreciated.

First, Google universal naked drivers xda. Try those. If they don't work go into device manager and go to where it says let me choose drivers from my computer. Then look for the android composite adb interface.
If you're on win 8 you'll need to allow unsigned drivers. Google how to do that

Windows 7x64 on all machines. I am trying this on 2 work computers and getting the same result. I have 2 issues that I think are the root of the issue.
#1 is the phone doesn't do anything in USB debug mode. I keep seeing references to having to approve the computer connection but I haven't seen that yet. I have tired 9 usb ports. 6 on my main computer will not bring anything, not even the usb drive. 3 on the labtop will only bring up a 'unrecognized usb drive'.
#2 is the computer will not recognize the device in anything other than a 'unrecognized usb drive' (UUD). Everyone keeps mentioning the Android Composite ADB interface. It's not there, it doesn't show up or as an option. I can go into the device manager and find the UUD and try and update the driver via the manual method with a disk but it doesn't list any type of hardware that is related to Android or ADB.

"#1 is the phone doesn't do anything in USB debug mode." This is normal!
How I experienced the USB debugging option is that, if turned ON:
1. The Nexus does not appear in my Windows env
2. BUT when in recovery mode, I can use the "adb" commands
If USB debugging turned OFF:
1. Then I CAN see the Nexus in my Windows env
2. BUT I cannot use the "adb" commands in recovery mode.
So you definitely need to have the USB debugging option turned off if you want to see your nexus in Windows, IMO

I think you really have an issue with the drivers. I would install the Google USB drivers. Maybe a bit heavy but then you can be sure that drivers are fine:

Anyone else with problems seeing the storage after plugging into PC? adb command works and device drivers installed. Found another forum where turning the usb from MTP to charging and back under developer options does the trick. I have a non stock ROM and seeing if fresh out of the box experiences the same thing.

I am running to the exact same problem.
I have tried with USB Debugging off AND on, still no go. I think there's a problem with installing the drivers. Whenever I check the device manager, it still says the drivers weren't installed. I have tried installing the Google drivers. What do we do?!

Need to get the drivers to install first and foremost. Even with USB Debugging on, I'm still able to pull down and change from charge only. Those drivers are key. I had to restart my computer before it was able to take the install.

I'm able to get to the pulldown and change the setting from charging to MTP. Every time I do that, I get a window showing that I'm installing the drivers for Nexus 6P. Then it completes. I can do this over and over again. In the device manager, there's a little exclamation mark by the Nexus 6P and says these drivers weren't installed Code 28. I have exhausted Google to no avail!
Anyone find a solution to this?

You chose to install the drivers manually instead of having the system do it for you? Right click the yellow exclamation .. update drivers .. allow me to pick .. choose the download file location see what that gives you.

When I choose the location, I see a bunch of options. The most relevant ones are ADB Interface and Android Device. Under Android Device there are several more options such as Android Adapter Interface, Android Bootloader Interface, and the such; no mention of MTP.

Did you already download the google USB drivers?
Should just be able to choose the android_winusb.inf driver. It should allow MTP

I have downloaded them. How do I specifically choose just that file? When I go through updating the driver, it asks for a folder location.
Go to dev options, switch the USB from ptp back to mtp and it works for me

Tried. Keeps trying to install the MTP drivers and it won't go through.
I was having the same issue with my computer not detecting the my phone storage but then i remove the drivers from my samsung in the device manager and then right away detect my nexus 6p, no only i can see the storage but if i select how i want to connect (MTP, File trinsfer) it will change the connection type and folder
MTP - shows the pics folder
File transfer - it shows the storage

I don't have any other drivers from any other devices. This is a clean install of Windows 8.1. I've only tried connecting my 6P, my OG 6, and my 9. All have the exact same problem.

You might wanna try installing Huawei Drivers and see if that help

I installed that application and I was able to see my device, the apps, the contacts, everything. EXCEPT I wasn't able to access the device from Windows Explorer which means I am not able to transfer files.

So when you change the option in the phone from charging to file transfer, did you check the device manager to see if there any unknown device showing somewhere?

Changing it from charging to MTP shows a MTP device in Manager with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. When looking into the details, it says that no drivers are installed. When I try "Updating Drivers", it says "Windows failed to install drivers. Code 28" or something along those lines. Code 28 MEANS that Windows failed to install drivers.

Nexus 6p Connection to PC Issue - This Helped!
I had similar problems with PC not recognising my Device. I found http://www.technobuzz.net/install-google-nexus-6p-usb-drivers/ which helped me solve my issues.
1. Downloaded and installed the Huawei Nexus 6p drivers. This installed a Huawei Task Manager which connection to pair was still not recognisable.
2. Deleted old drivers (acer, samsung, htc) from' Device Manager'. This actually helped PC recognise my device which showed up in the Device Manager>Other Devices>Nexus 6p, also in PC interface but once moved off charging to MTP, computer didnt recognise device.
3. Downloaded and installed the adb/fastboot installer. Followed instructions till step 10. My screen didn't show anything like Andoid ADB interface, it displayed MTP file install, which I installed. Just remember to refresh in My PC interface when changing over from charging to MTP, sometimes Nexus 6p will be hidden.
4. Uninstalled the Huawie Task Manager.
This has solved my problem with PC and Device connection. The instructions given are from what I can recall of the process I went through.
Credit to Sidharth Rathore from Technobuzz for this solution.

I was having the same issue until I uninstalled some other debugging drivers I had installed. So I would recommend crawling through your installed apps for any other android usb drivers and uninstalling them if you still have this issue.
Working on mine right now. Found that USB 3.0 ports will not recognize device. Once plugged into a 2.0, it is recognized. Might help your issue
Hello, I am having a rather strange problem. My PC did the dreaded auto upgrade to windows 10 the other day and I also got a new Nexus 6P. It seems my computer won't recognize my phone, at all, when I plug it in via USB. It's not even showing up in the device manager as a problem, it's like nothing happens at all.
I have
- downloaded and installed the latest google usb driver (right click install)
- downloaded the latest mtp drivers
- downloaded official nexus package from Huawei
- installed ADB and android SDK and also reinstalled the drivers from the SDK manager.
- downloaded some update for windows media player as someone mentioned that could be the problem
- tried different cables
- tried different ports (usb 3 too)
I am really at a loss. My work computer works just fine with it so I know the phone and the cable are okay and other things work on those ports on my home computer. By the way the computer is Windows 10 pro - 64bit

Have you installed Google USB Driver for nexus 6p? If not, download Google USB Driver, extract it and save it in your any name folder that you can locate it later, plug n6p in your pc or laptop and it should pop up with USB option to select either file transfer or picture transfer, click one of them, Windows should be able to find n6p driver, if not, go to setting on your pc, device manager, then look at highlighted USB of your nexus 6p whether it is properly installed, if not, then install it by finding the driver that you extracted in that specific folder... Hoping this works for you.

Thanks for the response, but yea I already got the new usb drivers and installed them via right click install. The thing is though that in device manager the phone doesnt show up, at all, not even as a problem device. Its like its not there. The phone shows that its charging, but it doesn't recognize that its plugged into a usb port. Im really unsure what to do about this.

Did you install x64 driver from Google USB Driver? Check to see to make sure your USB android debugging is checked. It is kind of odd, try to reboot your pc and nexus 6p, then plug your phone in different USB port if your pc has extra USB port..

Ah I see what you are referring to. Well, here is the thing, how do I install those drivers? Remember I cant find it device manager to update the drivers. The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?
By the way, I also have usb debugging on and usb configuration WAS set to MTP, but I just changed it to try the different variations, but now its stuck on charging and wont change to MTP, but I think its because the phone isnt being recognized by the computer because this morning at the office I was able to change the usb type to mtp and the others, but that computer recognized the phone... AGHHHH WTF

By the way, if your Android debugging on or check? Just turn "developer options" on your phone and then check Android Debugging. To install x64 USB Driver, on your pc, control panel, device Manager, look for phone USB Driver to see it has some kind of yellow triangle, if so update x64 driver from your extracted folder...

Hey Lucky, I really appreciate you helping me out here, but just so you know I am no newb with this kinda stuff. I have went through this process on a couple other computers with no problem, so when I say its not showing up in device manager I mean its literally not there. Its not there and just under some other name or with a problem icon, its literally not in the device list. Also, I do have usb debugging on

Please go to YouTube and type "install usb driver on nexus 6p" search and then follow instructions from the video... Good luck.
WAIT! I got it... Wow I would of never thought this, but apprently my Wacom was the problem. As soon as I unplogged my wacom tablet the phone picked right up... Strange... Anyways, case closed... freaking conflicts!
Okay hold on, still having problems. Well, now the computer dings when I plug it in, but it still doesnt show up. However when I change the phone usb to PTP the phone becomes visible on the pc in windows explorer (but still not in device manager) and when I put it to MTP it disconnects and I cant see it in windows explorer anymore, and still cant find it in device manager... Ugh...
Okay sorry for all the messages, but i did get the MTP working. I had to uninstall the reinstall the drivers a couple times... very strange, but whatever its working... yay!

Did you figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with mine and with USB mode not switching from Charging and the PC not even recognizing a USB device was plugged in.
I found using a different cable solved my problem. Don't really know why cause the first one I used seemed fine and worked to charge it, but by using a different one, Win 10 recognized it and got me in the game.
trying to get some help for my ZE551ML 4gb - unrooted and with the latest update
I have never had an issue plugging my phone into my pc and transferring files. I bought my daughter a BLU R1HD and that wont wont show up on any pc when plugged into USB...yes dev and debug is enabled.....installed a bunch of different drivers to try to get that phone to work and it wont....
but worse is now my phone wont show up.
I went to the main thread here and located drivers and installed, and nothing....went to asus support and dl drivers and nothing...
does anyone know why or how i can get the drivers installed on my W10 PC so I can plug phone into usb and transfer files?
In the pc's device manager, is the device listed there? And is there a yellow mark on the device name? Maybe the drivers didn't install properly, you can right click on the device and click update driver, then choose automatically, you must be connect to the internet for it to find the required driver and install automatically.
I had same issue. Makw sure phone is not. Plugged into the pc. Load up windows into safe mode with networking. Once there open device manager. From the pulldown menu choose show hidden devices then find the Asus drivers and uninstall and if available tick the box that says delete the driver.. reboot, reinstall.... Done.
This will work for most usb devices that are having issues.

sadly this did not work. I grabbed the drivers from the ZF2 resource thread here at XDA

whih i did and also uninstalled and resinstalled along with the intel drivers.
I did exactly as explained above and the device will not show up.
I have the Z00AD -- ZE551ML -- 4GB/2.3GHz 64gb version running Stock OS with NO ROOT - an its up to date (v 40.194)

Are you using the same cord for both phones with the computer? If so, try a different cord

Reboot the pc with the "disable driver signature verification" option and then reinstall the drivers.
This may or may not have some relevance to your problem. Try downloading a program called USB Device Viewer, run it as an administrator and uninstall all the phone drivers that are listed. Reboot your computer, plug your ZE551ML in and let it install the drivers. Hope this is of some help.
i finally fixed this bs problem. simply a matter of device manager >>>> portable devices >>>>> right click >>> update drive>>> browse my computer >>> Let me pick>>>

how stupid is this? the simple solution after 2 weeks of pain in the ass is what makes this so stupid.
