Just go to wipe or something, pick advanced and choose the Dalvik, Cache stuff. Should be pretty straightforward. Although there is a bug and you should go to settings first and check something with the formatting. Should be described in the TWRP thread too.

Go into advanced settings

That's what PAGOT was trying to explain. Going into setting and ticking the checkbox next to "Use rm -rf instead of formatting" will take care of the long cache wipe.

So, I'm stuck in TWRP - deleting cache forever

So I installed TWRP with the no root method, then I rooted.
I wanted just to wipe cache/dalvik but it seems to take forever.
How do I Hardreboot or get out of this loop?
thanks
ok problem solved, so wiping cache takes like forever...never mind
I got scared first time too!
Then I read in Clean ROM post #2 "For faster wipes go into TWRP settings and choose the option "rm -f". Then wiping cache is normal.
mkext4fs takes a long time for some reason. You'll see the same thing if you ever have to wipe system in TWRP.
I waited so long I almost stopped breathing....
Thank god
Others are saying the same thing. I should have went to settings and changed it. I can confirm it is taking FOREVER!!!!!!!
I never changed any settings in twrp, and it does not take me forever to wipe cache. No idea why

Hey just flash the 2.6.3.3 twrp, comes in zip format too just flash....has fix for long wipes....
And supports 4.4

[Q] New to android, can someone answer my questions on flashing roms?

I'm going to try to flash CM 11 and have already rooted and set up a TWRP 2.6.3.2 recovery. I have seen that you need the new TWRP update to flash CM11 so I have a few questions:
How do I update to 2.6.3.3 easily?
How can I backup all my apps, contacts, data, etc. so that I don't lose everything after I flash?
Is there anything I should know or do before flashing?
Also, how often do you guys flash new roms, or do you usually just stick with one for a while?
Thanks in advance

Hey you can flash Roms with 2.6.3.2 but I'll post a link for you in a Lil for 2.6.3.3...this one is a zip so just flash and wipe cache and davlik afterward.
Make sure you make a backup by going into recovery and clicking on backup and swipe to start. You should always have a BACKUP before you start flashing. If you flash a ROM make sure you wipe SYSTEM, DATA,CACHE, and DAVLIK under advanced in wipe.... Before you flash a ROM and then wipe cache and davlik again afterward.....hope this helps

Here is a link for 2.6.3.3 twrp its flashable so go to recovery and flash the wipe cache and davlik afterward the boot up.....also your contacts and such won't be deleted if its on your internal storage ( make sure you don't wipe this)
Install myphoneexplorer client in phone and in your pc and sync your contacts to it and copy all important stuff to ur pc through it you can use WiFi to connect phone to app in pc if you both are on same network so it gives u flexibility, then install flashify from market and then go to teamw.in/projects and look for twrp and download the one that is for your phone and save it to your phone in sdcard then run flashing and select thy zip u downloaded and flash it and make sure u do cache and dalvik cache wipe after install and then u r done.

In settings there should be a section for google to run a back up that syncs your apps and/or contacts.
I flash Roms a lot. Damn near daily, you really should give each ROM youre trying a few days to "settle in" especially the new 4.4 Roms.

Thanks for all the info, it helped a lot and now I finally have a rom working.

[Q] How to get G3 ROM running?

Hello.
Few days ago I rooted my phone to flash cloudyg3 (custom rom).
So, after i installed cloudyg3, I went back to twrp and wiped the cache.. and suddenly - my g2 was having bootloop and was bricked.
No buttons worked and I got it back to life through adb . A real headache for me as an android newb.
Now, I really want to get the rom back lol.
DO I NEED TO WIPE THE CACHE BEFORE INSTALLING A NEW ROM? Thanks. And would this avoid bricks by any way?
Before installing new rom: wipe everything EXCEPT internal storage in the advanved wipe menu i twrp. You'll bootloop if you skip this part. So yes, that includes cache
After wipe, zip new rom and make sure you choose the right variant (d80x or whatever is yours, mine is d802..) in the aroma installer.
Happy flashing!

That is if you are using twrp. For cwm: wipe to install new rom, than cache, than dalvik cache under advanced menu just in case.

does wiping cache in recovery do anything?

Hi, it might sound as a noob question but does wiping cache partition in stock recovery do anything?
Reason I'm asking is that I remember doing it on my previous phones (in TWRP) and the phone would take quite some time to reboot afterwards and show a dialog such as "android is starting, optimizing app 1/100"... I wiped the cache partition in stock recovery, logs say that the cache was wiped but the phone reboots in seconds (I see no difference with a normal reboot), so I'm curious...
Thanks!

That was because you wiped the dalvik/art cache. Can't do that in Stock recovery.

or maybe it was wiping Dalvik in TWRP that caused the phone to take longer to reboot, anyways when Android is updated the phone goes through app optimization at reboot, can anybody clarify please?
thanks

Why is there an option for it then? Does it just do nothing?

Unable to wipe Data Partition

About after 6 months, I decided to change ROMs on my Moto X. Just like before, I booted into recovery, made a nandroid backup, and tried to wipe cache, ART and Data. But when I try to wipe the data partition, the recovery freezes, my phone starts vibrating and goes into a bootloop. Neither the new ROM will boot, nor will the Nandroid boot. Is there a way to wipe data partition using ADB, as ADB still works.
Also if it helps, I'm using the adopted storage format for my SD Card(i.e. where the SD Card is formatted as internal storage)
Thank you! Don't have a device rn, so any help is appreciated!
I experienced the exact same thing. Was unable to wipe or re-install back up. My data was in the f2fs format so I changed it to ext4 and was able to wipe and finally install a new ROM. Currently using TWRP 3.1.1.0. Not sure if this helps you but that's what I had to do to get it to function.

Use "format data" first, then go to advanced wipe. It will erase all internal memory.
What rom/kernel was the last? Twrp version? @kkricardokaka95

What rom/kernel it happened?
I had it with RRemix + handbag kernel 2.0.
At the time I was running Viper OS with handbag 2.0. I went back to CR Droid with stock kernel for now. I haven't had a chance to mess with things since to verify its fixed.

I used 4 different variants of TWRP but to no avail. I think my data was also in the f2fs format, I don't remember. Will keep it in mind next time something goes wrong! I used a Flash to Stock tool and I'm sitting at 5.0.0. Used fastboot to flash TWRP, will flash some other ROM and check what's wrong.
I was on Ground Zero ROM(Validus) with Handbag kernel.

Format Data wasn't working. Recovery hung and rebooted resulting in a bootloop

Try the suggestion from post #2.
(Twrp - advanced wipe - format/repair file system)
It is most definitely the handbag kernel. I'm back on stock CRdroid kernel (completely fresh install of ROM) and have wiped format, backed up, restored all without any problems on TWRP 3.1.1.0. I even put my file system back to f2fs for data.

You'll have to go back to stock then flash twrp and then recover your backup.
Happened to me when I used handbag with los14. 1 and aicp
