Make app into system app - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to make an app like "Where's My Droid" a system app? I like the app, but if I do lose it, anybody that finds it can see the app and uninstall it. If it were a system app, the icon wouldn't be on the screen or in the app drawer.

[Must be rooted] You could manually move the apk from data / app to system / app using Root Explorer (or similar).

Thanks. I am rooted. I'll get root explorer and move it. Will it have to be installed again or is it a done deal?

Just move the apk and reboot.

I'm on it. Thanks again

For some reason I couldn't find it, but looking in Titanium Backup/Special Features, I found you can choose make system app. All's well now, but I'd still like to remove it from the app drawer, but still be able to access it. Is that possible?

You'll need to decompile and modify it -- which is not easy to do. Or you can use one of those "hide app" apps in the market.

Delete a Program Shortcut

Just a heads up if no one knew... Instead of going through the system setting to delete a program, just highlight the icon of THAT game/APP/program and drag to the garbage at the bottom and hold there. You will get a "drop to uninstall" option and vua-la... hope that helps...
The thing is that that only works with apps that we downloaded ourselves. Most of wanna get rid of the apps that came preinstalled. (Which can only be done with root)

Wow, what great timing. I don't mean to hijack your thread haha.
If you don't want to uninstall apps but you don't want to see them in the drawer, then the the newest version of LauncherPro can help (if you already use it)! I literally just updated like 10 minutes ago and it has a feature to hide shortcuts from the app drawer! Best feature evaaaaaar.

Same problem here. Every app I disabled disappeared from launcher except for Amazon MP3, and it's driving me nuts
You could "freeze" the app with titanium backup, which removes the shortcut icon and makes sure the app cant start. Big advantage is that you can still install OTA's. It comes with a price tho..

Freeze is the same thing as pm disable. And it doesn't work with Amazon MP3. It stays in the launcher and crashes when trying to launch it.

AAAHH Im in the same boat too, there must be a way..
If you have permanent root, and Titanium Bakcup, you should be able to permanently removed the app. Just go the backup/restore tab at the top, go the app you want to remove (Amazon mp3) and hold it for a while...there should be an option for forced removed the app. The phone will then reboot itself, and once rebooted you will find it is completely gone. The only down side is you cant update OTA anymore. But really who cares? very soon we will see custom ROMs popping up everywhere. I am pretty sure they will contain the latest updates.
I haven't tried it myself yet, but I found this on another forum:
com.amazon.mp3/com.amazon.mp3.client.activity.LauncherActivity
Hope this works

Proposed force-close fix

Hello,
I recently had a force-close issue on a recent rom (syndicate frozen 1.1.0) where I was overclocking to 1.4ghz and tried to wifi tether. Tether would not start, so I closed it with taskmanager, and restarted tether. Phone instantly rebooted and I was stuck with the apps that were previously running force-closing.
You need to be rooted for this to work.
Make a list of all the apps that are force closing (important that you include your launcher)
I found out that if you go to the "report" button, there is a "more info" button that opens browser (hopefully it still works). From there, do a google search for a free root file system browser apk (there are plenty of them). Download the apk. the pulldown menu should still be working. Once the download finishes, you will get a notification, pull down the bar and install the app. after it installs, you will get a prompt to "open" the app or "close" the window, choose "open". Navigate to your /data/data folder. search for something that resembles an app that keeps force closing. Enter that folder and delete all the files/folders inside. repeat for the rest of the broken apps. Reboot your phone and it should work fine now.
I am asking that all/most rom developers to add another button on the "force close" "report" notification labeled "fix" that deletes the files from the apps data folder.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this just the same thing as going to settings-apps and then clearing data for that app?

ooooorrrr you could goto menu>settings>applications>find the app force closing and click clear data and achieve the same thing a lot easier...
rom developers dont have the ability to add buttons to those windows... those reports goto google or samsung...

I just enable journaling and what is this?
First off, sorry about the misplaced post.
I know it does the same thing, but if you are stuck at a force-close loop and your launcher app will not load, not allowing you to access the app management page; you see the dilemma.

i believe this could be because journaling is disabled. After you get your phone set up the way you want it, make a backup. Then restore the backup and you have journaling enabled. Or at the very least, if you get stuck at a force close loop, you will still have a backup to restore and not have to spend hours setting up all your apps etc.
just sayin'
Can also use JournalingOn.zip to instantly enable journaling.. but always having a bckup on hand is a good thing

I have the above showing that its taking up 5GB on my Nexus 7, when I go to Settings > Storage >Misc files.
What is it? What app uses that?
Just wondering what to do about it.
Thanks,

Just a guess but may be for an RSS feed I would delete it if it takes up 5gb

I don't want to delete it, since it might mess up an app I am using. Rather, I would like to know what app its related to. Is there any way to find out?

Looks like it's for this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meecel.feedreader.RssDemonAd
Edit: Can't imagine for the life of me why an RSS feed app would take up that much space, unless it's configured to download and store content or something.

Nicely found and that helped, thanks. It didn't show under Installed Apps but showed under the All list, under MyApps. Not sure what the All list is meant to show? Previously installed apps?

Correct. If you no longer use the app, you should be fine to delete the data. As the above post mentioned, if in doubt you may just rename or move the folder first to make sure nothing breaks.

I can't seem to delete the cache folder as there are too many files in the folder. About 20K I believe. Any ideas on how I can get rid of it?

What file manager app are you using? Maybe try a different one, I like solid explorer and root browser myself.
You might also try connecting the tablet to a PC and see if you can delete it that way.

Android L Sucks.

I flashed on my Nexus 4 Google's factory images, yeah, the animations are cool and pretty fast but Google makes me have to use Google+ for example.
I don't use it and don't need it, but If I uninstall Google+ I can't use Photos, and It is the only gallery app on the device..
What can I do?
I just want the old Gallery...
So you are saying that android L sucks just because of that?
there re plenty of gallery. quickpic is good.

So you can download another gallery app, then uninstall it (may need root explorer)!
Hope I can help you!

Pretty much.
In my opinion, the whole concept of Android is not be tied to 1 thing only, do whatever you want.
And that's really annoying when Google makes you keep an app that you don't need just because it is tied to another app.

You mean the AOSP version, not G+ Photos? Keep an eye out for an apk, or flash one of the AOSP versions of loli. Though I'm not sure if Gallery is present there, but I assume it is.
Wait to CM12

Dont click on Google+? It doesnt force you to do anything with it. Yeah I suppose its annoying if you cant uninstall it but just ignore it and problem solved?
Here's the AOSP Gallery you wanted: https://www.sendspace.com/file/cyym47
Make a folder named GalleryGoogle under /system/app and paste the .apk inside the folder you created. Set the permissions accordingly and reboot(if you're not sure about permissions, check the other folders and .APKs' permissions using Root Explorer). If it doesn't work, you need to do something with the lib files.
i kinda see his point. the first thing i always do when i flash a new rom or in this case stock image is get root, get a app like "root uninstaller" and start deleting all preloaded apps that i don't want like google+ and earth and newsstand, etc. i like a clean OS with just what i want and it doesn't hurt that doing so also free up more ram and system storage
but now i can't do that AS MUCH as i want cuz some apps are link like google+ and photo. Until i find a good 3rd party app that looks good with the OS to replace some linked apps i'm stuck like this
