Fast battery drain after 4.3 update - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi everyone
I installed about two weeks ago the United Kingdom BUT MJ7 stock rom and from that moment my battery life is horrible.
I tried to disable everything I could, here's a list of what I disabled:
- Wifi
- GPS
- Bluetooth
- Reading mode
- In Wifi settings: Always allow scanning
- Air view, Smart scroll, Smart pause, Smart stay
- In software update: Wi-Fi only
I tried also disabling the "Remotely locate this device" in Android Device Manager under Google settings but it also didn't improve the battery life.
I set the brightness to auto and the Power saving mode is off.
I don't want to enable the power saving mode because it feels later that... I don't know how to explain, I don't like it.
I don't use any bombastic applications, I use Facebook, news, workout app and antivirus. That's about it.
I don't play games and don't mess with big applications.
I charge my battery everyday and in most cases now (after the update) twice a day. For example: last night I had my battery on 80% or such and in the morning (after 6.5 hours) it was around 60% (~20% per 6.5 hours).
Also, during the day, when I use it I just go to facebook and such silly stuff and I start my day with 100% and end it with 60% (and again - no playing games and no stuff like that which require maximum graphics, CPU performance and such).
In settings>Battery the Screen is shown to be the most "heavy" process but I already set on automatic brightness, the screen timeout is 30 sec. and everything is disabled except from "Auto adjust screen tone"(but it's written in its description that it saves power). Oh and also I have adapt display turned on.
I also wanted to say that before the update my battery was OK and only after the update to 4,3 that happens.
Thanks in advance for any of your help

Do factory reset. Backup if you need too..

What am I doing wrong here?

Ok I got the X10 a few days ago.. loving it.. now..
How do I extend the life of the battery? I know theres a ton of topics on this but I can't seem to get more than 12hours..
- I use StartupAuditor and pretty much stopped most apps from running at start.
- I use ADW Launcher
- I use JuiceDefender
- Timeout - Screen timeout after 15s, lock after 2mins
- Schedule - Enable APN/Wifi for 1m every 15secs (for Moxie Sync/Mail - Push)
- Screen - Leave APN/Wifi enabled while screen unlocked (So it disables it after it has been locked)
Any help is appreciated.
After a couple of weeks your battery life should get better with out you having to do anything. Just be patient and let it fully discharge before recharging. Also restart your phone after a full charge and after using wifi and gps.

Discharing a battery is bad isnt it?
Well your problem may lay here
"- Schedule - Enable APN/Wifi for 1m every 15secs (for Moxie Sync/Mail - Push)"
Your using Moxier which other X10 users have identified as a huge power user and according to you, your also using APN/Wifi for a minute every 15 seconds..........so it's essentially never turning the APN/Wifi off :-S
Hope this helps!
Also fully discharging your battery every now and then is actually beneficial for your battery.
Quite certain the 1 minute every 15 seconds is a typo
Juicedefender defaults to 1 minute ever 15 minutes.
I removed ATK and Juicedefender, I found they only screwed up things in the phone and after removing them I noticed no change in battery life. (If anything, my battery life increased after removing ATK)
The best things for battery I have found to be.
-- Alternate launcher (I use ADW, I think Helix is better for battery performance but ADW has more options).
-- First 5 charges, discharge battery completely and do this again once every month or so
-- After full charge, power cycle phone (Turn off/on)
-- Use quick settings to turn off GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth when you are not using them
-- Make sure you back out of programs when you're done with them. This will close most applications so they are not running in the background. Certain apps (like a dolphin browser) have exit functions under more options. This is useful as back will just go to the previous page.
Note: Force closing applications which you see open in the background may use more battery as it may just start up again. Constantly killing and opening the program will use processor/battery power. Whereas many programs, when open in the background, are not using active process power and Android OS will pause/stop applications which are not in active use, by default.

Where can i find the timout setting for the lock?
Screen brightness turned down. Wifi instead of 3g. That's what I do. And I think I get around 15 hours. Still kinda bad. But better than nothing.

From my experience..
I find 3G has better battery life than WiFi, unless you are constantly browsing. When 3G is active, but you're not browsing the web and stuff, I find it doesn't use much battery. WiFi, however, uses up loads of battery when the phone is idle.

I want to know that as well Tried to find in phone settings but couldn't figure it out
Battery barely gets drained by wifi in idle state. you just go into wireless settings and set wifi sleep policy to when screen turns off.. should be fine after!!

As per my last question, discharging is bad isn't it? With these batteries, you have to constantly charge them so they don't loose life
Edit: Also.. if I press home button or back button that doesn't close the app.. most apps don't close like that, so I have to use ATK to kill it.. is it fine to leave apps running in the bg like that?
Edit: So I should uninstall ATK?
I also JUST got an X10 about 2 weeks ago! My battery life was so bad at first, and I ended up trying most of these battery saving apps. But to be honest, I found that they did more damage than good.
I now have everything I don't use turned off. Bluetooth, WiFi (when I'm not home at least) etc. Just skim through settings and turn off anything you don't think you'll use. And I restart my phone every morning and I get 30-50 hours out of it, depending on use. It is definitely getting better with time too.
For ATK, I would uninstall it as generally killing tasks does more harm than good. If you use it intermittently and only when necessary (and not use auto-killer) you could keep it installed.
As for apps running in the background..
-- If you press back, it should close most apps (not all, but well designed apps should)
--The Android OS is designed to pause/stop apps/processes which are not being actively used by the user and will close them eventually if left unused
-- ATK is generally only freeing RAM which is not important. It is not like Windows in the sense that more free RAM = faster speeds. It is a lot more like, more free ram = more wasted ram.
Here is a link to where I found out most of this information.
http:/geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
As for WiFi sleep policy, thanks for pointing this out. It seems that my phone is already set to sleep WiFi when the screen is turned off. I find this weird as I have found significantly reduced battery life when I turn WiFi on, even when my phone is mostly unused/idle.

i have noticed some thing strange ,the phone lasts more with apps open in backgroung than when i close them . and using my phone consumes less battery than leaving it in standby .very strange phone (may be only mine ) any confirmation.
Hey Hoss,
I can confirm that force-closing/killing apps seems to be worse for battery life than leaving them alone. Backing out of apps usually will stop any cpu usage, but leave the app running. Killing/closing them will just result in more cpu power to run it when necessary.
As for standby vs usage - I have the opposite experience. The battery life on my x10 lasts a lot longer when I am working all day and not using my phone very much.

[UPDATES] Battery saving tips.
WiFi sleep policy : Wireless & Network > WiFi settings > menu > advanced > WiFi sleep policy > when screen turns off > enable
Mobile networks : Wireless & Network > Mobile networks > (disable packet date, change network mode to GSM only)
Settings > Location & security > (disable use wireless networks, disable use gps satellite)
Settings > Applications > Samsung apps > (off)
Accounts & sync > (disable background data & auto sync)
Settings > Privacy > (disable backup my data , disable automatic restore)
Settings > display > screen mode > (change to movie)
Settings > display > brightness > (disable automatic brightness & move slider to the left extreme)
use cpu spy to see if the phone is not entering deep sleep mode.
use better battery stats to check which app is consuming more power. link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Go power master is a good tool for reducing the consumption by setting profiles.
Go Launcher Ex has good customization as well as running apps indicator in the app drawer where apps can be closed selectively / collectively.
use battery monitor widget pro to check the drain (better than the stock battery indicator)
Using Maps-Latitude , facebook app, fring mobile voip etc can drain the juice to a great extent.
Juice defender app has a good track record & would come in handy for better battery performance.
Above mentioned steps are for non rooted users.
Best if you can root the device. By this way you can use a good custom rom & a custom kernel combination to get good battery life.
Use Titanium Backup or similar to freeze Wi-fi sharing and Wi-fi sharing manager (by TempusFudgeIt)
After flashing a new rom, charge the battery to full on power off. When @ 100% remove the battery & wait for 2 minutes & reinsert & restart the phone. Said to be good for better stats in the first cycle. (by Kr$na) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209087
use your Note when needed (dont check the time every minute etc)! This will help the system to get "deep sleep". (by mR.fR34ky)
Turn off automatic brightness ( use Stock brightness adjustment or alternatively use widgetsoid widget / Brightness control / Brightness level / Screen filter app with custom screen brightness % button) (by mR.fR34ky)
Turn off 3G network and turn back when you need to use it. (push mail will work on Edge and lower networks [gprs])(by mR.fR34ky)
Browse facebook from browser and use facebook messages app. (Avoid installing facebook app)(by mR.fR34ky)
Uninstall all of the unsed apps via Titanium Backup (ofc make a backup before uninstalling)(by mR.fR34ky)
FEEL FREE TO ADD MORE TIPS.
Here is a standby test I did a few months ago. I didn't follow all that , and my Note managed 8 days 8 hours and some when it hit the 30% mark.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473692
It all depends on how much you keep the screen on.
yes, true. I only have about 3 hours screen on time from my 3+ days of usage. Also, this is the first battery cycle after flashing the new speedmod kernel. Dev was somewhat halted in speedmod but is active now with some great offering. Had been a great fan of Hardcore's work from the s2 days.
Does changing screen mode save battery ?
LOL... Disabled everything??? Then why do we need a monster beast like this???? What is the use of sacrificing all these wonderful features for saving battery??? Buy a cheap one with no features stated above... There is a phone with 15 days battery backup in samsung. No offense. Just a thought.

Actualy i have to agree with you XD carrying it around without using it better off with a smaller thing dont you think ?
though each step he mentioned was true you can get long standby time if you don't use the screen meaning just dont take the phone out of your pocket, vibration eats battery too. i have almost 85% of the time the wifi connected and and browsing listening to music and downloading manage getting 14 hours with bluetooth GPS WiFi gamming a little and some calls i would say 15 minutes
i mean a massive battery just root and flash a worthy KERNEL anyhow you can also use setCPU and make the phone run at 200Mhz when screen off and run at 800 Mhz when battery fully charged infact nothing actually demands for more power than that i tested it and it flows.... plus when getting to 35% range use it at 500Mhz that way it saves works never hangs and for sure gets 14 hours of standby & usage.
I know this probably doesn't matter much as many usually replace the phone before the battery is dead but draining a lithium battery all the way down greatly takes away life. You should charge your battery every night as you are sleeping anyway. The depth of discharge takes life away from lithium. Deeper you go the less cycles you get. Take advantage of your sleep time and charge the phone.
A lithium that is only taken down to 50% can have up to 4 times as many cycles as one that is taken down to 10% every cycle.
I read somewhere that lithium batteries lost their lives trying to absorb last dose of charging.
There came that famous Ezekeel kernel.
Don't know much about it so I could be wrong too.

Exactly.. I'm using mobile phone for past 13 years.. Right from day one I charge my devices when I sleep (never mind it's completely drained or full) it'll be plugged to charger whole sleep time. I'm following this all the years and I have never changed a single battery of any device. To maintain life.. Do not let battery drain to its death. All the device have builtin circuits to cut off the charging when it's done so I never cared to switch off soon after full charge.
As REVERSIN suggest... To get a better Battery, mod your phone optimum with good kernel and rom..

I dropped the brightness by 20% (from 40 to 20%) and used Opera Mini instead of the stock browser and I went from around 4 hours screen time to 5.5!
Use Titanium Backup or similar to freeze Wi-fi sharing and Wi-fi sharing manager made a difference to my unit. Got an extra few hours a day.
Also freezing social hub helped.
It does not matter it last for 2 days or 10 days, but at lease last for 1 full days. I can charge the battery daily but I can't have my phone stop working some time in a day just because of battery.

It depends what your usage with the phone is like - everything I have read indicates that the longest continuous use you will get with the Note is around 6 hours - that is with the screen on all that time... (Not putting it into standby and then checking it seven days later to see if it has any juice )
I consistently get over a day and still have around 30-40% charge. My use would be:
1.5 hours video
15 minutes calls
30 minutes music
1.5 hours reading ebooks, emails, sms and browsing the internet
I'm pretty happy with that. Having the tether cable means I can charge the phone from my PC when in the office every second day.
i have followed some of the tips & i m getting 2-3 days. Thanx.
+1 for a sticky.
Good compilation of the details. Think this is good for a sticky.

There is a world of difference between having a phone with no features, and having a phone with features that you have turned off by default if you aren't using them. I have a car with lots of options in it and I don't leave the car running 24x7 with everything switched on.
for those with <1 day battery life, if you have used any of these methods to better your battery life, pls post them with some stats in the forum to help others !!!
Also, i will update the 1st post with suggestions from you (just to keep updated).

We pay for the features to use it when we need it.
I don't leave wifi/3g turned on at nights.
Nor do I need google+, facebook, twitter, google docs, google current auto-synchronizing when I'm asleep. Edge is enough to sync gmail.

I need major battery saving tips!!!

Dunno' about you, but after an year I started noticing the battery isn't as good as back then.
Try JuiceDefender, that's what I'm using right now and it's quite good.
Doesnt that waste more battery?
Cause it runs in the background?
Not really sure, but thats what i think.
I vote JuiceDefender as well. It has very minor battery impact for a decent amount saved (as long as the phone's on standby and not syncing a lot). You don't state what you've already tried, but with root & unlocked bootloader you can underclock and undervolt which helps save battery a lot. Delete unneeded apps, especially the stock crud. Make sure no apps are using partial wake locks (keeping the phone from going into deep sleep) by using BetterBatteryStats. Btw, BetterBatteryStats can identify a lot of things that might be draining your battery. Of course, the most obvious battery savers would be turning brightness down, turning off GPS, turning off WiFi, lowering volume, etc.
Auto Brightness on or off ?
Really? Xperia Play's been the only Android device I've ever owned where battery life WASN'T a concern.
...at any rate... here's some tips!
• Toggle Data to "Off" when it's not needed or switch to 2G/EDGE (or even Airplane Mode for dedicated gaming sessions)
• Enable Auto-Brightness
• Disable the notifications in any app that keeps your phone in a data retrieving cycle (Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Weather, etc)
• Keep GPS/Location Data off whenever possible
• Stay away from process heavy battery destroying whores like Regina Launcher, GoLauncher, Xperia Home, Fullscreen Launcher and Claystone
• Use a minimalistic launcher (LauncherPro, Smart Launcher, Lightning Launcher, ssLauncher)
• If you like live wallpapers, that's fine - but fine-tune their options so that they aren't always murdering your battery
• Make sure your WiFi connection is set to disable mobile data (this is commonly set by default)
• Be very wise about your widget usage. If you're going to use them, fine-tune their settings so that they don't murder your battery
• Give your phone a complete battery drain, then recharge fully at least once every month.
• If you're in low-reception areas that have WiFi, save your phone a lot of battery-draining connection conflicts by keeping WiFi on.
I'm using almost everything TLR suggested plus set CPU with a profile for screen off that turns the CPU down to 340mhz. Battery seems to last pretty decent for me.

TLR brightness option is diff than mine, instead of auto bright i just simply put it as low as possible. It totally savs more.
Im using a Mugen 1800 battery . Bought it last week and i easily get 20-40% more charge than with the standard one.
It lasted me for full 2 days of light usage (2 hours and 30 minutes of display time) .
Tried nearly everything on this page.BUT, does OC waste alot of battery??
Overclocking would make your battery worse. I don't know if it has a major effect though, depends what you overclock it to.

How much battery time are you getting now?
My advice, go back to 100% stock factory reset.
Then debloat.
If your phone is old, your battery probably lost some of its capacity, so you could try a new battery.

My battery is fine now, tried all the tips and made massive difference. Thanks everyone!!
I don't know if battery is different here in Aus (BST41-1500mAh), but mine is 18 months old and just by turning off bluetooth and WiFi and controlling screen brightness and 3G as i need them, i got 2 days general use (10 calls per day 50 sms and 1hr 3G web browsing per day) R800i.
Last month i flashed JellyBean following these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801983 and now I get 3-4 days use! With this mod I can leave it in 2G mode and for some reason it still gets data via EDGE so I can still get facebook + skype messages etc. This feature and i'm guessing better control of the CPU and tasks are obviously the main reasons for better life
I would really like that rom but i need camera.

So you'll have to live with the battery drain. This "issue" (Access to my location ON) is the most battery consuming thing I've ever seen in the android world since 4.3 arrived. LTE (4G) connections comes in 2nd.
I use my S4 in "energy save" mode & LTE OFF most of time. Also, I have "Blocking Mode" enabled for the period I'm sleeping and installed the Lux app for improved brightness control (I've the paid version).

I don't have LTE yet in my country so I guess this service is off in my device (?).
I also have enabled the power saving mode but still there's a battery drain and as I think, disabling all these GPS&WIFI&BLUETOOTH&AIR GUESTURES&AIR VIEW&MOBILE DATA what you all suggest is like having an old Nokia 3310 so what's the point in having a smartphone if I can't use a basic option such as weather forcasts. I hope this issue will be solved in Kitkat.
Meyhemg, I see your point. First time I upgraded my S4 to 4.3 got a feeling I had to turn it into an old Nokia X1.
But soon Sammy released a fixed firmware and battery drain now is gone. Course if you enable all that crappy Sammy stuff (that makes you look like a Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, bouncing hands and so on) battery will drain like a hell.
Have you tried the new MJ9 firmware, as suggested? What is your actual baseband and phone model GT-I9505?
As for the LTE, check under "More networks | Mobile networks | Network mode" that "LTE/WCDMA/GSM" is NOT enabled. As you don't have LTE/4G you can keep the settings as "WCDMA/GSM".
Also download CPU Spy let it run for a couple hours and tell me how much Deep Sleep you get.

A guide to a better battery life.

Hi
I see a lot of people on here complaining about the battery life on this phone, when in fact it's quite good. I have been able to pull off 3.30 hours SOT today with 40% left and 18 hours since unplugged with not even half the settings below (only turning off the things I don't use at all) and my Smart Watch connected with bluetooth all day.
I came from a Xperia Z3 before and of course it's nothing compared to that one (even tho, at times I get higher SOT) but the Galaxy S6 is also capable of way more.
When I first started with the phone, I was one of those that got barely 2 hours SOT so here I will write down the tips & tricks I gathered from reading on here and the things I found out myself.
First of, if you rooted, the cause could be no deep sleep. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/battery-drain-root-twrp-to-fix-t3088860 by Meboy.
If you have deep sleep this might do it.
1. Disable voLTE as it's not really needed. Phoneapp -> More -> Disable it from there.
2. As this is a amoled screen, each background light, light up individually, so having a black background (and black theme in apps) safe a lot of juice.
3. Wifi -> More -> uncheck always searching for wifi.
4. Settings -> search -> Trust Agents -> Disable Smart Lock if not using it. It use quite some battery even when not used (no idea why).
5. Update Samsung Push Service from App Store.
6. Disable movements and gestures if not using them. Settings -> Movements and gestures.
7. My Google Services used way to much battery. I found the app, deleted the data and it came "back in control", so it's acceptable with the battery drain now.
8. The Gmail app use less juice than the stock Email app.
9. Sync, NFC, GPS and off when not using. I only have mobile data on all the time.
10. If in low coverage area of 4g, use HSPA instead (if good coverage). I barely notice any different in speed, but my phone use way less battery in deep sleep now. Still at 100% after 8-9 hours of sleep when on HSPA (good signal) from 4g (very bad signal) where it could use over 5% a night.
11. Settings -> Availability -> Direct access -> Turn on -> Grayscale on. 3 taps on the home button will turn Grayscale on, which greatly reduce the power your screen consume. No need to have it on all the time. But at times, when you know you gotta need the battery, turn it on by 3 clicks on the home button and your screen will use less battery.
12. The Facebook and Messenger app use quite a lot of battery. But I need the Messenger app, but I deleted and disabled the Facebook app (remember to disable it too, as - no idea why - it still used battery even tho I was logged out. As the Facebook app is stock on the S6) and just use the web browser Facebook app. Works fine.
13. Other apps I disabled is:
Drive
Facebook
Everything with Google in front of it. Google books, play, now, plus etc.
Hangouts
Instagram
Onedrive
S Health and S Voice
Skype and Whatsapp
Just disable the apps you don't use.
14. Battery saver. If you don't want to have it on all the time, set it to a certain %, so that when your battery hit that % it turns on. Helps greatly improve battery life.
15. Greenify apps that run in the background, but no need to. Like
Dropbox
9gag
MyFitnessPal
Wordfeud
etc
Don't disable apps you use all the time, like Messenger, Chrome, Snapchat and so on, as you will not get any notifications and it use more battery opening them up all the time.
16. Instead of using auto-brightness, set it as low as you can tolerate.
17. Vibration off - Feedback, keyboard and ringing. Vibration use quite some juice.
18. Turn google location history off. Can't remember where, but a fast Google search will tell you.
19. Have been reports about high usage if restoring from old phone or google/samsung account.
20. Heard someone say this, but not sure what other side effects it have. But he said that you could disable Google Services, as there is a wakelock bug on 5.0.2 and it should work fine if not using other Google apps. But not sure on this one!
21. Widgets are cool, but they have a drawback. Some of them use quite some battery too, like weather apps.
I know some of those things will turn your phone into a dumb phone, but this is clearly tips to improve battery life. No need to use everything all the time. Turn off the things you can live with all the time and the rest you can turn off and on as you like and when you need it.
EDIT: Tasker is also pretty neat with secure settings if you know how it works.
Then your phone can automatically turn GPS on when opening apps that use GPS and turn it off afterwards.
Thank you for this, im not a heavy user but hell im seeing 30+ hrs on the phone ... cant complain

Agreed! This phone have lasted me a weekend! 1-2 hours SOT a day, less than 1% battery loss for 10 hours standby time. It have just beaten my Xperia Z3.
Great thread it really helped a lot
Man although I'm very pleased with battery life already, this is an excellent guide bro. This should be stickied in my opinion.
