helo, i can't believe that most of the roms i tried don't have a settings to block the Power menu when your phone is locked (only miui have it so far), my phone can be geolocalized by android device manager if i lost it ok it's good. the thing can simply be defeated by turning off my phone as you can turn off the phone from the lockscreen... why even android don't have this function on stock ? incredible.
thanks you
You don't need the menu to power most devices down, either hold the power button or remove the battery.

ours nexus 4 and few others phones battery can't be removed, only few percents of the popuplation (advanced users aka geeks) know that you can force power shutdown with long pressing. (for example none of my friends know that...) to fix that it would be cool if someone can introduce a change how force to shutdown work, maybe only with a combination of buttons

That force-shutdown is a low-level thing in either the bootloader or (in well-designed devices) the hardware itself. There's no way to change it.
Anyone who is stealing a phone and attempting to disable tracking is going to be smart enough to use hardware methods to shut down the device and wipe it to nuke any trackers.
After all it's pointless to steal a device and power it down for eternity. Even if powered on, throwing it in a foil pouch will isolate it from all networks.

I don't think it's possible to disable the long press power button event (10 seconds) at all (like Entropy said it should be implemented in hardware). And I can't believe that disabling the power menu by just modifying a file.
I implemented an option to disable the power menu when the screen is locked (actually for another reason: I don't like that everyone is able to unmute my phone or put it in flight mode). I'll push it to Gerrit soon.

Um, what percentage of thieves will do it?
If someone is stealing your phone to get at your data, then encrypt it with a PIN lock.
If someone is stealing your phone just to steal your phone - that's a thing of the past with IMEI blacklists.

You have carriers who support IMEI blacklists? Here in Germany I know only one carrier who implemented it, and it's working only if the stolen phone tries to connect to their network.
But ignoring that thief question - the reason why I build the patch is that I just don't understand why it's forbidden to change the ringer volume on the lockscreen, but it's possible to enable flight mode or even shutdown the phone.

I'm sorry but don't you think that's too many clicks?
I realize that this may not be the popular thing to say around here, but I came from an iPhone 3G. Contemplated getting the 3GS but decided to give WinMo one more try and placed an order for a HD2 just now via DeviceWire.
But getting back on topic.. in the iPhone jailbroken world, there is a fantastic app called "SBSettings". It gets activated by a swipe near the top left area of the screen. From there, you could turn on/off toggles for things such as bluetooth, Edge, HSDPA, rotation, autocorrect, etc etc. People are building other toggles as addons for it all the time. But something like that should also exist for WinMo.
Now that I'm a WinMo newbie (my last windows mobile phone was a PPC-6700 and I swore never then to buy another windows mobile phone again). So there might already be another app just like the one that I'm describing. But if there isn't, it'd be great for someone to build that software. I'd certainly be willing to pay for that kind of conveniences!

Sure, if this was a setting people used one or more times a day, like turning wifi/bluetooth on/off.
How many people will ever even want to switch from the automatic default? 1% who are looking to save battery at the expense of speed? I'm sure there'll be some crazy control freak who wants minute-by-minute control of this, but who cares?
For 99% of people auto-3G degrading to 2G when 3G is unavailable is exactly what they want. For 0.99% of people they'll want to switch to pure 2G for battery purposes, it's a one-off action done on day one. It's easy enough to find in phone settings.
Who cares about that last 0.01%? If they're that bothered they can pay someone like me to knock up a switcher app.
I don't own an HD2, but I wouldn't be surprised if this could be speeded up a bit. On my Touch Pro2 the normal route would be Settings/Communications/Phone/Band (at the bottom of the screen). But the thing that gets launched when you go through that sequence is actually a programme in its own right, called CMBandSwitching.exe (resident in the Windows folder). So if you make a short-cut to that programme and put it in the Start Menu, then you can jump straight into it. Maybe there's a similar trick on the HD2?

Nice find!
There have been many reports concerning the long term usage of android and it's effects on WinMO, but, I've read some reports regarding usage of android effecting the device itself, mainly the digitizer, causing it to malfunction, are these reports frequent? and does android truly effect the hardware itself in some way?
Could you link to these reports please......
Im curious..........
Cheers......
i may add one side-effect. My leo's windows button clicks when i push and it pushes the home button. To much option usage caused this i think

Not convinced myself.
Would like to see whats got the OP in a panic though........
I do sometimes find that my clock/calendar is altered sometimes after returning from android...... no serious problems though
I fail to see how it could possibly affect the digitiser though..........
I use android for months, my digitizer works just fine. Just be kind to your phone, and android will live long and ever after

I can confirm that using Android will lead to memory issues, energy levels dropping very quickly and conflicts in the processor stack - but only for the human using the phone trying to find a build that does it all!
Seriously though I think the only danger is to WM, not the hardware (unless you overclock) and that comes from booting the kernel. WM shuts down real fast, any ongoing registry writes etc may corrupt so best disable sense and all apps before pushing the Android button.
Is there any way to disable the backlights behind the Dedicated touch buttons located at the bottom of the vibrant. ?
I am very annoyed by the way it lights on and off. I can easily navigate without it and im thinking that it would also consume less battery life.
Thanks
Blinding to you too huh?
I've found not. They "were" the quintessential "look" of uber tech awesomeness, but now I"m just going blind at night. Haha. Guess that comes with age.
I think it is a software modification as black night notification can be turned on. So as such, maybe it can be turned off as well.
So far, haven't heard anything about it's implementation though.
If I find something, I will report back.
I'd also love these turned off or ate least down. Adjbrightness can do this with other phones but not, apparently, the sgs line.

Short of opening up the phone and putting in a resistor, it currently isn't possible to reduce the brightness of the LEDs. That's because the interface for controlling the LEDs is too slow. Normally LEDs are dimmed by blinking them really fast, as other methods are hard on the lights.
What I suggested doesn't work. Edited accordingly.

There is no "off" on the Nexus Player, just like the Chromecast. It goes into a low powered standby mode after a few minutes, waiting for any Google Cast connections to wake it up and start playing (with HDMI-CEC enabled on TV or receiver, it'll automatically turn on, switch inputs, etc to start playing your cast immediately).

Like @Elrondolio already mentioned, there is no "Power Off" feature (which I HATE!!!). However, you could look for some kind of switch that you could attach to the power adapter cord so that you don't have to unplug every time that you want to turn the device off...something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1125 (though, I have no idea whether or not that specific cord actually will work...I'm just presenting the concept). I've done this with my raspberry pi and it's awesome!
Another option would be to plug the player into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch (which would be much nicer than the cord IMO).

I'm truly not trying to be confrontational here, simply curious: why do you hate that it's always on (in low power mode) so much?
To me, I see it no different than another phone or tablet in my home as it has nearly the exact same innards... all of my family's phones and tablets are on 24/7 as well, either on battery or charging on the mains. Having to boot up the box for a quick cast to show a quick video/trailer/etc to the family or start playing some music would be an inconvenience, I'd think, as having to wait for a receiver to boot its OS every time would be.
Again, simply curious as to your reasoning is all. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for your explanation.
I also have a Chromecast installed on my TV and I don't have any problem with it being always on WHEN my TV is turned on. However for the nexus player it will be truly always on unless you switch off the main.
I just got my nexus player yesterday so I dunno if it will be warm/hot if it's always on even when not in use. Anyway if it's not warm/hot if not in use then I've got no problem with it.
Thanks again everyone!

No worries about being confrontational, everybody has there own likes/dislikes...nothing wrong with that. Part of it is the made desire for efficiency that I have...why have something consuming power and bandwidth when it's not being used? Also, the amount of time that I and my family are using it is far less than the time that we aren't using it, if I was using it all day, I might not mind so much. Also, it's nice to do a reboot without unplugging the device, especially since I want to put it in a cabinet that is somewhat of a tight space. But, probably one of the biggest things that comes to my mind is connection to the internet on a 24/7 basis really bugs me. I know that my phone and my wife's phone is always connected...but it needs to be to notify me of things, my TV isn't notifying me of anything, I just want to use it when I want some good old couch potato entertainment, so why take up my bandwidth (I assume that it does some kind of check) and use any amount of power (which I do pay for, no matter how little the power usage is) when it isn't needed?
Personally, I believe that the following principle (highly advocated by Google) should have been followed: "Decide for me but let me have the final say" (http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/principles.html#decide-for-me). In other words, give the option to leave it on all the time for those that want it...but allow for powering off for those who don't. That way, everybody is happy.
I know this isn't an on-device fix, but if you're seriously concerned about your TV accessories only being on when the TV is on, there are many power strips out there that have a "master" outlet that toggles power to the rest of the outlets based on when the master device is on. So turning your TV on and off will switch power to the rest of your devices.
A reboot option would be nice. As for turning the NP off, I am using a TRIPP LITE TLP76MSG Eco Green Switched 7 Outlet Conserve Energy Surge Protector from Amazon.
Just an update, I found that when not in use the player is cool to the touch. As such I believe it goes into a low power/power saving mode. I have no issues with it being always on now. Way to go, google/asus. :good:
Confirmation of sleep mode
My nexus player's light is always on. Does anyone know if this means the unit is on or in sleep mode after the 30 minutes of inactivity? I have set it to 30 minutes and daydream does come on. Based on the manual, when the light is on the unit is on.
Thanks
https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123074?hl=en&ref_topic=6121506
I think the light just means it has power, so it can be in sleep mode even when the light is on.
This was my main concern yesterday.
(I had since a week ago the Nexus Player but due my Internet provider's laziness, it was not until last night I could FINALLY setup my account and the device).
I noticed the DayDream options but I agree that the same OS needs an reboot option.
Mine doesn't switch back on when the TV is turned on again. Just a black screen and doesn't respond to pressing buttons on the remote.

Understand that you can't power off the Nexus Player, but will it damage the internal components of the player (flash drive, etc) in the long run if you just simply cut off the power supply, which is apparently the only way to off the device?

So I got this phone for my lil sister and I want to make it sure the phone is anti-theft bust proof as possible.
She doesn't use Mobile Data as much because using Wifi is more convenient at places. Not having Mobile Data running makes Android Device Manager useless so does Xperia.
Is there a way to using SMS to lock the phone, or make it turn on the GPS which automatically forwards me the coordinates, or uses the SMS to send command to connect to the mobile internet which makes Android Device Manager/Xperia bultin in anti theft work?
I just play music and put my earphones behind or in my ears.

Oh my bad, thats really clever. What about the software side of tracking the device. Do you have any?
Since I started buying unlocked phones, I can no longer insure it. 500 USD It is A LOT in Mexican pesos, like 2 months of hard work at a sweatshop. So this are the security measures I've taken:
1-SIM lock
2-Pattern lock
3-As device administrators: my xperia, android device manager and the most powerful of all: CERBERUS
How It is configured:
I cannot live without a rooted phone. The main reason I got into the modding forums was to install Cerberus, that was way back in 2011. Now that we have the Xposed framework we can keep our phones a little more secure.
With the Advanced Power Menu (APM) module, you can configure what options are available on the lockscreen. If you steal my phone, you WILL NOT BE ABLE to:
-turn it off
-put it on silence
-set the airplane mode
The only option available on the lockscreen is the screenshot and LED light. And cerberus will take a photo of your ugly face and send me your location. Even if the phone is about to get lost forever, I can perform a factory reset and delete all the data on the external microSD.
Root is absoultely needed for the xposed and cerberus to work!

Yes, My Z2 is always online
Battery drain is normal for me. I charge it at every chance I have. I'm OCD when it comes to battery level.
If the SIM is replaced the phone is still locked by the pattern
But if the SIM is replaced with another carrier's SIM, this will f*ck up the internet connection. No data and no WiFi means no easy way for the phone to get access to mobile data or WiFi...but if the thief can unlock and does a factory reset, Cerberus survives and will still protect the phone after a factory reset. Unfortunately, Flashtool o PC Companion will erase everything (except for the external microSD).
Remember to keep the box or the phone's IMEI number and get as fast as possible to a police station or a carrier's customer center to lock the phone.
OK. Do you think the carrier's can track the location of the mobile if I give them the IMEI number? Or does this depend carrier to carrier?
Also if I want Ceberus to really effective, I would need to root the phone?
My suggestion would be to use pattern lock or even better a number lock.. And also encrypt the phone.. That way if stolen, thy wil reboot the phone sometime and it gets locked @boot itself if i am not wrong. BTW use theftie app if u r rooted and also switch on "location services" only.. It wont drain much like gps..

AFAIK the IMEI only bans the phone from mobile networks. No way of getting it back and yes, Cerberus needs root to be a powerful device manager.

Nope, you cannot locate the IMEI. You can only register the IP adress from which this IMEI has accessed the internet.
And i'm not even sure the provider can do this.... google play store can for sure! But is the IMEI also sent when the SIM card is connecting to the network?
Me myself i don't use any theft protection... not even sure if myXPeria is activated atm ^^ Simply for the Reasons:

B: if i ever lose my phone i trust the finder to bringt it back! I don't even have a number pattern, so the finder could call Australia if he felt like it. I'd rather hope he'd call home and tell me i lost my phone
