[Q] kitkat and LTE - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious if anyone has successfully enabled LTE running the official 4.4 from google. I decided to try the pure nexus experience when the N4 went on sale, and considering I upgraded from a Motorola Triumph on Virgin Mobile to the N4 on T-Mobile it was like getting out of a Ford Pinto into a Ferrari. I have to say the delay on the OTA update and the lack of LTE support from google with a phone that has the chip in it is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth though. I like the phone and want to keep it, so if anyone can confirm that having both 4.4 and working LTE is possible than I probably will.

Stop whining about slow OTA, it's still going to get updates sooner than other non-Google devices. (MotoX is a Google device.) Or if you want KitKat now without willing to flash the factory image, either sell the Nexus 4, buy the Nexus 5 or sign a 2 years contract with Verizon and get their bootloader locked Moto X.
Google will not enable LTE for the N4, that will require a FCC homologation.
You can manually enable LTE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2412052 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358931
If you need instruction on how to flash it, follow 2nd link root guide in my signature.

Try following the directions at the link. The second to last page has people people stating that they got LTE to stick on 4.4. I haven't updated to 4.4 so I can't confirm. I prefer staying on stock rooted, but I don't like the icons in the notification bar going from blue to white in KitKat(I prefer blue, lol). So i'll probably be on 4.3 for a while

Awesome thanks, I'd be happy to stay with 4.3, I've had no problems with it. I really don't mind waiting for 4.4 either, I was just wondering if someone had success with 4.4.

KitKat Rolling Out on Rogers

Ran a software update check this morning on my Rogers Note3, after my friend mentioned he got KitKat on his Bell S4 on the weekend. Sure enough, 400+MB update was available.
Servers were slow (both my home Wi-Fi and LTE were getting the same speed. Took about an hour to download). Install went smoothly and only took 2-3 minutes. And KitKat it is.
I'm using Nova Launcher, so the only immediately visible change is that all the icons in the status bar are plain white. Otherwise, I perused through the system settings and didn't see much that was different beyond the addition of a "Printing" option under Connections > More networks, and the odd change here and there. However, things do feel smoother and basic stuff like unlocking the device has no lag at all.
Just a quick note, also available for Telus this morning...

Am wondering. I am rooted with knox 0x0 on 4.4.2 using the mexican telcel rom form a cpl months back and the old modem from 4.3 mj4.
I want to get latest KK from Rogers while maintaining root. SO I cant do an update this way. Is there a way to flash just the modem and sytem files form this update ot get me to latest version of things without wiping all my data?
I'm just wondering. Why is it because Bell and Rogers note 3 gets KitKat that at&t note 3 gets KitKat? Not trying to be a smartass or anything but does one of them own the other or something?

I'm not really sure what you mean?
Bell, Rogers and Telus all use the same versions of most phones as what AT&T in the U.S. offer, as their networks share the same spectrum ranges. So when the manufacturer of a phone (Samsung) releases an OS update for an AT&T model phone, all four companies then have access to that and can tweak that update and release it to their customers when they wish. Typically (though not always) that means that all of the companies release updates to their customers around roughly the same time.

I just wonder if they actually believe people use all or any of their bloatware. if their products were in a store it would be already marked down and discontinued.
I unrooted my Rogers Note 3 with Kingo and managed to download the update file on my device. Once I began the install it failed and rebooted. Any ideas?
Wait! Your telling me there are different apps out there that are not from at&t? Every aspect of the phone can be used by an AT&T app.

Fixed! Used Kies and update worked. Anyone try Kingo to now root 4.4.2?
Lol. I got a kick out of that. Sounds a lot like something AT&T would do.

I love the start of the second paragraph apparently no one must have gave At&t the memo about how fast the update was suppose to come out and we're suppose to have the fastest network of course but the slowest upgrades.
Just updated mine. Noticed a massive spike in android OS usage. Did a factory reset and ST card format

[AT&T] 4.4.2 Update CHANGES

I'm starting this thread because the official update thread has become more of a "I can't update" and "this is how you get around that problem" than about the result of the update... which is not only fine but important. But I think it's just as important we discuss whatever changes are taking place in the new update once it successfully installs.
This thread is strictly for AT&T, and I encourage others to start one for other carriers as the bloatware and other crap will differ.
What I know:
- OTA Kit Kat update began rolling out on March 26th with the majority of updates available in the evening and then mass-available the following day (I updated on the 27th).
- If you have not rooted your phone, most people should have no problems with the OTA. If you are experiencing issues, go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51457419
- Once the update is complete, a number of people (or everyone?) have reported (including myself) that touch does not work on boot. You can take out the S-pen, navigate as needed, and tell the phone to reboot. Once rebooted again, touch should be restored (verified on multiple reports).
- New, faster boot time.
- More responsive menus and motion.
- Revised status icons from the "colorful" Jelly Bean look to the monochromatic grey.
- Reports of hotspot being disabled (which means AT&T lied IMO when they sold me on the "hot spot is free now" line).
- Google Wallet does not allow click to pay (someone else will need to elaborate since I have never used Wallet)
- There is presently no root for the OTA version of KK (that I know of)
Please add to this, evaluate what bloatware remains, or was added, what works still, what doesn't that used to work on JB, and so on.
Also, someone with an S-view case please let us know if the S-view window functionality still works.

That's ok, I stated that a number of people did, not everyone. Not sure why. It could be due to whatever software was previously installed. But for those that have the issue, there's the fix.
I wil be honest, I have an unofficial S-view cover. But I just yesterday got my otterbox and struggled to get it on, dust-free. *sigh*.... .I will do my duty now and remove it from the otterbox and reinstall the generic S-view cover. FWIW it LOOKS official... has "Galaxy Note 3" in the official logo style on the bottom and "Samsung" on the back, embossed into the vinyl. Cost me 9 bux shipped. Worked fine before, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

Got the Note 3 a month ago andI was very dissapointed that the Note 3 GPS voice was much worse that the Note 1. With the KK OTA upgrade, the GPS voice was changed and sounds better (although I think they put too much base/low tones in it).

Thats because it's the Samsung voice you're hearing, not the standard Android "voice". You can change this in Settings to the stock Android voice.

I haven't updated (I won't give up Safestrap), but from what I've seen, almost all the "improvements" have been done to 4.3 by the devs here. I have a PIN coded lock screen - with a camera. My GPS works except when I turn out of the development. (In the entire city, and on 75 mile trips, that's the only place it glitches, and it recovers in about 3 seconds) ... The only real "improvements I see are a little bit more RAM, a little faster (faster than X-Note on 4.3?) and default text app (but since I run the Kit Kat app, and there's nothing else installed, that's a big yawn to me).
AFAIC, this isn't 4.4.2, it's 4.3.1, with a few things broken from what you guys are saying. It's a minor point upgrade, nothing like what I think most of us were anticipating all fall.
Can't side load any apps. The install button doesn't work.

Did everyone who wanted the OTA Lollipop get it except for me?

Why doesn't Google love me anymore? Is it because I said bad things about them on XDA when I switched to iOS for my phone? Why no lollipop lovin for me? I'm sorry Google. I love you again. I'm probably not lying I promise!
I remember back in the day there was a way to force Motorola devices to update. I wish there was a Nexus way to do the same - other than flashing.
Download the OTA Update ZIP: http://android.clients.google.com/p...signed-nakasi-LRX21P-from-KTU84P.4939a9ff.zip
Boot into recovery and click on "apply update over ADB".
Then open up the platform-tools and type in: adb sideload 4939a9ff6d10c495beaed26ac96228246f724272.signed-nakasi-LRX21P-from-KTU84P.4939a9ff.zip
For an advanced guide google it plese. This is a info that you can find within seconds. It's not that hard - trust me
I have the 3g version and I'm still waiting for release.
Oh ok, there is currently no lollipop for the Nexus 7 3G. You are out of luck...

Not yet anyways. I'm hoping to get it either on my phone or tablet soon.
But I am Wi-Fi only 32 gig. I'm well aware I can download/ADB flash - I've been flashing things since the freaking 1980s (no typo) including all my other Android devices. This tablet I keep ”pure " and it has been an experimental personal comparison against my iOS devices, which of course have any updates always available immediately upon announcement.
Android and iOS updates couldn't be more opposite in experience. Android users beg for updates while iOS users beg Apple to stop updating! It's kind of ridiculous!
That's weird then. You should of gotten the ota by now.

I haven't gotten an OTA update either. Google is slowly releasing the update in patches, but this is way toooooo slooooowwwww by any standards.
I too have kept my N7 kosher and haven't sideloaded or rooted yet like my other devices. I am going to wait till my patience with Google breaks and then will jump into ADB or rooting
I also have not gotten the update..
Wonder if they stop them due to issues.

Just updated. here are some observations that I've made based on the app's that I use on a day to day basis / general observations that I noticed. Smoother. Sweet 5.0 transitions. Contextual colors for the notification bar. Smart Lock (via Moto 360). New keyboard. New calendar: simply more lollipop-esque. It's awesome. Finger print scanner seems to have improved (which I guess I wouldn't be using as much because of smart lock). I usually use Hangouts bc the stock Messaging app was 1)too laggy 2)couldnt read multiple texts on Moto 360. With new update, i tried out the new messaging app. Lollipoped, AS smooth and fast as the the new Messenger app by Google and it allows me to read threads on my Moto 360. I'm sold. Camera app has been slightly tweaked. In Modes we now see fast and slow mo as options as opposed to going deeper into the settings to change it..And best of all: multi tasking capacitive button is finally faster. I never used it bc it was so slow to respond.
Im on rooted with stock recovery ...do I need to unroot to take the ota? Thanks

Are you kidding me? All carriers except Verizon?

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I thought the 6P was an unlocked device agnostic to all carriers.
I'm tempted to see what happens if I flash this factory fresh on my 6P which is on Verizon.
Edit: If I were to take a guess, either Verizon only wants their Pixel line of devices on 7.1.1, or there is an actual problem.
Regardless, I may bootloader unlock my device again if Verizon gets shafted in the update for 6P
Yeah, that caught me off guard too. Killed the Dev Preview, and updated everything EXCEPT for working on Verizon. Dev Preview 2 worked on VZW, so my question is, what the heck did they break so bad that now VZW doesnt work?
Could it just be something to do with the Visual Voicemail on Verizon being cooked into the newest 7.1.1 build?
But I am no way defending Verizon from being Evil. They are the Evil CDMA Red Dragon for sure.
*Sprint SERO FTW! :toot:

I would hope. We may be giving Verizon too much credit though. However I would do the opposite of complain if they did bake in VMM and Wifi Calling into 7.1.1 Nexus. Or heck, even one of those would be nice
Sooooo the real question is, who's gonna try flashing it and report back??
Really though, it must just be some sort of off the wall issue or feature that might have held it back from them alone. The 5X doesn't have the same update limit so, it's just something 6P specific. (Unless 7.1.1 brings Pixel features, and Verizon doesn't want Nexus to rain on their Pixel party just yet...)

You can't flash anything with locked bootloader only accept official OTAs which you won't get probably because 'no verizon' so flashing it yourself is the only option really (I guess, OTAs will be rolling out to everyone over the next few days/weeks).
Everything seems to be working so far.
Created a boot.img that doesn't force encrypt. Flashed it then wiped userdata to be unencrypted. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugajI4b3RleTlJSDg/view?usp=sharing
Then got root and adaway working using existing root stuff I had sitting around, I don't even know what the latest versions are but I used - TWRP 3.0.2, Magisk 7.0, phh superuser 17 magisk version, adaway systemless hosts v2, and adaway downloaded from f-droid.
Then flashed a zip I made with Pixel Launcher, Nexus Launcher Icons, and working stock version of the pixel Live Wallpapers with updated libs. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugZDZaSnhYS05OSGM/view?usp=sharing

It's almost fully working on VZW.
The problem is, and the probable reason for that notice is, that Verizon likes to promote their devices by their sw versions. I remember when their G3 got Lollipop first........that f**kin ad was everywhere.
So I believe they would like to throw in their bloatware in to the OTA first.

Perhaps, but the DP2 radio is the same as this, and works fine for me. I'm really irritated by this, after buying from Google. It has to be some proprietary stuff to make CDMA work, except isn't sprint CDMA too? And they aren't an exception for the new release.

Well I just installed the OTA image on my Nexus 6p (which runs on Verizon). After the upgrade completed, I noticed that my data connection was not active. The phone could make calls, but no data. I tried switching in and out of airplane mode, but that didn't fix it. So I powered off the phone, then powered it back on, and all was well. I connected at 4G and everything appeared to be fine. However, I do notice is that the VoLTE setting is nowhere to be found. If I search for "voice" under settings, I see "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode". But if I click it, it takes me to the "Cellular network settings" page, which does not list that setting. I just made a test call to another Verizon phone, and it didn't sound like the enhanced voice mode was active. Not really a big deal though. I'm sure a new update will correct that before long.

Aah. Well, on DP2 I noticed I was unable to call voicemail, it just hung up on me. The fix ended up being disabling enhanced lte/hd voice in my account. I still have the vvm. As dp2 is the same version as the official, that's likely the reason a separate release will be needed. Personally, I don't care about the HD Voice, but enhanced LTE would be good to get back.
