I just rooted and patched to 4.4 on my nexus 10. I have been trying for 3 days to get it to let me use usb external storage and to no avail. I have tried stickmount and i can get it to mount the usb but when I use file manager it shows up but the folder is empty, and wont let me copy anything to it either. So then I tried nexus media importer it looks for the device then fails. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong I can get stickmount to work with 128mg stick, 4g stick, and 1g stick but when i try a larger one it loads it but the folder is empty, any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Have you tried attempting to activate the new file picker implemented in KitKat? I was wondering if this would support OTG functionality.

Has anyone tried using MTP transfer?
I'm trying to copy some files from the phone to the computer but it seems impossible through MTP.
What other methods you can use to transfer files?
I had to use adb pull command to pull all my data before i unlock the bootloader. I'm assuming that custom ROMs will let you connect the phone as an external storage device but what about people who don't/can't install custom rom? Do they have to live with those slow MTP speeds while transferring something to the phone?

i had that issue with a GS3 and someone told me to try a different usb port on my computer. so i did and everything transferred much faster like it should.

I tried everything and the only way i could get adequate speed was from adb.
I'm wondering why google didn't include external storage as an option to connect (in 4.2.2, i assume it's a software feature) like there is in some other phones that does not have sd card slot.
I don't think anything can fix MTP. It's so slow, that I have to use adb to transfer Clockworkmod backups.
I hate MTP so much.
The reason there's no mass storage option is because the geniuses at either LG or Google decided it was a good idea to make external storage a folder in /data/ rather than have a dedicated /sdcard/ partition.

An earlier version of Directory Opus (sorry, the trial expired and I did not note the exact version) seemed to do a good job of transferring files from the Nexus to the PC (Win 7), but when I tried it on another computer and it no longer worked (transfer stopped before it actually completed).
I tried the following and it worked for me:

Use the patch that is suitable for your rom.
install StickMount, connect the usb otg cable to portable drive (in my case a seagate 320 GB Freeagent), the power, and then the phone.
The drive is mounted under /sdcard/usbstorage/sd1
You may need the ntfs-3g file from Chainfire's site.
Transfers were at 7 to 8 MBps from the Nexus to the portable drive [NO PC/Windows involved]. This is better than MTP and DirectoryOpus [when it worked] which was at around 4MBps.
The other option is to use SuperBeam app.
DirectoryOpus might work, but you probably need the right combination of MTP drivers, DirectoryOpus version and Windows version.
I have the international version of the LG G2 32gb. Stock rooted with exposed framework, one or two navbar/statusbar modules installed.
I have tried a small 4gb usb drive and the G2 recognises it just fine. I have nothing bigger except for an old (perfectly working) 100gb usb external hard disk drive ntfs format. it doesn't rely on any power. USB cable from PC powers it just fine.
So when I connect this drive via USB OTG, my G2 simply doesn't see it. I've waited more than half hour to see if it is performing a media scan silently but it still doesn't show on any of my file explorers such solid and root explorer and stock one ofcourse.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Is it because it is an external hdd?
Is it because the phone can't power it on its own?
Is it that it can read only smaller cards less than 100gb? I don't have access to anything else to test.
Is USB OTG supported in aosp roms like pac man?

That's your problem friend... Format it to FAT32 or root and use this

Really? Wow, I'm gonna have to transfer all those files from the hard drive first and then format right? I hope my G2 would recognise it then. I'll post an update soon as I can get my hands on another HDD to back up to before format.

The only thing is, my other small USB drive which did work via USB OTG is also NTFS format. Why would this work and not the larger capacity external HDD?

Are you 100% certain the other one is NTFS?
Android is not NTFS compatible out of the box (unless rooted).

Yes I'm sure. The 4gb USB stick that works over otg cable is actually what I used to create a quick recovery drive of my win8 laptop as soon as I unboxed it. Win8 requires the flash drive to be NTFS for the recovery image to be created. So I did as it asked and formated and it produced the recovery drive on it.
I now connect it to my G2 and it recognises the flash drive and it shows the contents as recovery files for windows.

I have just installed the Android 5.0.1 update AND purchased a 64Gb Sandisk USB/MicroUSB memory stick.
My Nexus 10 can mount the USB stick without any problem and I can see and use all the files on it but because I had to format the USB stick as NTFS all these files are now read only so I cannot delete any files from it nor can I move files from my Nexus 10 to the USB stick.
Does anyone know if there is a way to coax my Nexus 10 to be able to read AND write to my NTFS USB stick/drive?

AFAIK the kernel has to support NTFS writing. There are some on development section, you may want to search for it.

I use the playstore app USB OTG Helper but you will also need to install SELinux Mode Switcher and set that to permissive mode. Despite the USB OTG Helper app displaying an error (-9) when an OTG SD reader is attached it provides the full RW access your looking for. It also provides multiple formats support beyond NTFS. I personally use Linux ext4 on all my SD cards which is also supported. It has an experimental exrFAT support but I've never used it.
There is also Stickmount but I prefer the way USB OTG Helper added the external storage to the device. It seemed to integrate with my music player better, that may be personally choice though.

Well I have tried both and whilst both seem to mount my USB drive and both seem to acknowledge it is mounted, when I try to delete a file which is on the USB drive using ES File Explorer I get the error message of "unsupported operation"!?
If either of the pro versions have something that the free version does not, that will get USB read/write working I will happily buy pro version but no point if not working
Hello I am somewhat new to the really working with Android. I purchased a Nexus Player knowing that the storage was small only 8gig of storage but I figured with the micro usb port on the back there would be a way to add external storage. I had no idea it was going to be such a chore, but I am learning alot along the way.
Ok for starters the player is running Android 5.1. I
I found out to do this I needed to Root the device and get stickmount and foldermount
I successfully rooted the device using chain fire and then I loaded their side loader.
From there I was able to load the both Stickmount and Foldermount. I even bought the pro addon for Stickmount and have it loaded as well.
ok so now I attach my USB stick through the OTG cable I purchased and see that STICKMOUNT mounts the device to sdcard/usbstorage/USBSTORAGE
THen I open foldermount and if I look at partitions I notice there is no Partition that is showing my 16gig usb stick...
I then contacted the developer and they said just browse to the proper folder where stickmount mounted my usbstick and use it for the destination.. Ok well I then went to app analyzer selected a game, picked the OBB file, and browsed my way to the where my usb card was mounted but then I have no options...... I can't go any farther... I saw online it says to click the checkmark at the top of screen but there is no checkmark.. I have never saw a checkmark anywhere in this program.. I see in screenshots online there is a 3 dot menu at the upper right hand corner of the screen on FOLDERMOUNT but that is nowhere to be found when I run mine.. I just sit at the final destination folder and can do nothing with it...
IF someone can help me I would really appreciate it.. I'm pretty new at all this but am working my way through it.. There has to be a way to get apps to my USB stick I just know there is..
If someone knows of anything I'm doing wrong either why there is no partition showing my 16gig usb stick or how to get the menu on foldermount that would help.. If there are some settings on the nexus player that I need to change please let me know. I've been looking everywhere for answers and I have found no clear answers. Basically if someone running android 5.1 has gotten apps to a USB stick or any external storage please post the procedures for getting this to happen.. Thank you everyone for any help you can give.

So i have a Nexus Player with Marshmallow 6.0 intalled (rooted). I have 2 usb sticks (16Gb & 32Gb) both are SanDisk USB 3.0 Sticks. Both are formatted using the Nexus Player "Storage & Reset" option.
With the latest ES File Manager and SuperSU i try to create certain folder within the USB sticks, but every time it says: "Please choose the root directory XXXXXX of ext-SDCard to grant ES permission to operate". I have StickMount installed and gave it grant permissions with SuperSU. Did not do any good..
From research on the internet i understand that marshmallow no longer allows external sd card nor USB sticks as external storage?
Is there a way to fix (bypass) this?

Both USB's are recognized when i start up ES File Manager, but as soon I want to create/copy a folder to one of the USB stick, is says sorry action failed.
ALso tried to start Root explorer from within ES File Manager but again it says: "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your device".

I would like to know this as well. I currently use two 1TB hard drives on my NP on 5.1.1. It would be really nice to be able to update to 6.0, but the last time I tried that I could not get my drives to work.
Not sure if this is a solution you are looking for, but I am my Nexus Player on Marshmallow 6.0. I have a 5 TB usb drive attached to my Netgear R7000 router. I have successfully network mounted (over wifi) my drive and all apps see it natively. No need to use the Nexus Player USB port. I wrote these instructions a little over a year ago and they still work for Android 6.0
