Help manually flashing stock rom/recovery - Acer Iconia A500

Hey all, I just did something stupid and well long story short I can't downgrade/upgrade or get stock recovery.
I'm running 3.2.1, No root or anything. Some reason I don't have the stock recovery so flashing update.zip is impossible. I was able to get the v9 bootloader on but thats it (I know its for ICS+). I've been searching and downloading non dead links trying to get this to work.
I was able to boot the device but now its locking at the lock screen. I can get into APX mode or to the main v9 bootloader options. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction to get this fixed? I have the root-3.2.1-V4 package also.
Thanks

Sounds like you can do this;
1. Go to Blackthunders listing for roms. Grab a ICS Full Rom for the 500. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560
2. Get a CWM (latest version) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 , sroll down to "manual flashing". Download the V8 multi cwm package. Unzip it to your PC.
3. With the tab booted to the V9 bootloader, connected and make sure windows recognizes it.
4. Then in that folder, open a CMD window. Type in the following (I assume the CWM image files are there)
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxxx.img
(xxxxxxx.img is the name of the Thor CWM recovery image file)
Hit enter and it should flash. Then go back to the V9 bootloader, and select the Recovery option, and see if it boots to the cwm recovery. If it all works, then the rest is easy.
Copy the rom you downloaded to your external SD card, Boot to CWM recovery, and Install zip from external SD card. Should install (if it's a full rom) and when it re-boots, it should be a stock ICS system.

I actually got it back working. I used the apx tool and got the v9 loader with team win cause it's the only one I found that well actually mount the sd card. Got Thor's Rom and flashed. I was going to try to go back stock but was way easier to do it this way. I appreciate your help. Bookmarked for next time my fat fingers get ahead of my brain!

Unfinished rooting nexus one , please help

hi
I have a Nexus One on Official 2.3.4 update and i'm trying to root the phone, i'm having a hard time with the recovery image, I really like to know what i should do next.
1. read lots tutorials
2. Installed Android SDK and USB Driver for ADB thingy
3. downloaded and put fastboot in platform-tool and successfully unlocked bootloader
4. cannot get recovery to work, intended to install clockworkmod and RA one both give me the ! logo when i intend to boot in it
Questions
1. Should i downgrade first and then do this, if so, how does it work (if someone have a link to step by step tutorial)
2. Other methods
thanks a million
How are you trying to install recovery, and what errors/results are you seeing? Should be:
fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
How are you booting into recovery (if you reboot the phone, you will lose recovery)? Should be:
fastboot boot name-of-recovery.img
No need to downgrade. An unlocked bootloader is all you'll ever need...

i install recovery that way yes, but i didn't boot that way, thanks i will try right now, will report back
EDIT - that works thanks so much, now i'm gonna attempt to root.
now i encounter another issue
so far i been following this guild http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
and i cannot reboot to recovery after vol down+power menu.
do i just enter recovery with fastboot boot command and go from there?
what would be a better guild from this point on?
Place these two files on your sd card:
su zip: http://db.tt/BJudP0L
fix recovery zip: http://db.tt/ooDaCnU
Boot into recovery from the fastboot command, choose the flash zip from sd option, and flash the two files (one at a time). Done!
awesome, i had them installed. what's su and why is it recovery fix, if u don't mind can u explain these 2 files a little bit?
and what's next, do i just put the rom i'm flashing in the SD Card root and use recovery mode to install the zip?
going to use Cyanogen 7 for nexus one (update-cm-7.0.3-N1-signed.zip)
and also, what is this Google Add-on i read from the tutorial?

su is short for superuser.. its basically using the root user account..
btw 7.1 RC is out if youre interested.. also take a look at the nightly releases
If you're going to install a custom rom like cm7 you do not have bother with the su part.
Put cm rom on the sd ( can be anywhere you just navigate to it) and the google addons (those or the gapps like the market etc.)
Flash custom recovery
Boot directly into the recovery (if you boot the os it overwrites the new recovery with the stock one)
Flash cm7
flash gapps.
reboot into cm7...
Your custom recovery will now stay there until you either flash a different one. Or flash a stock rom.

great, now u said flash cm7 do u mean "install zip file" but pick the cm7 file?
also, google add on, where should i acquire it?
also, for nightly release of cm (cm7.1 rc) for nexus one i should download the one called "passion" is that correcT?
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly
Also forgot to mention to do a wipe before you flash. That is also done in recovery.
gapps http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip That is
In recovery you pick install zip file. You then browse to your cm7 rom.zip or any rom for the matter and install. Do the same for the gapps. Do the same for any other flashable zip like kernals etc.
Yes. Nightly/stable/RC's all have to passion (nexus 1)
Also for future reference post ?s in the Q and A section. A mod will probably move it there or delete this thread.

Great!
i will keep that in mind for sure.
Update: Method Works now i know how to flash and root nexus one, awesome guys thanks a million.
Conclusion and Steps I did (probably helpful to many people like me research tons different tutorials)
1. Download Android SDK and install it,
2. Find "Nexus One USB Driver" download and install it, now install bootloader (follow guide here, but only do up to the boot loader part http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795)
3. Find "fastboot" download and extract it to Android SDK installation folder (one called Platform-tools)
4. download a recovery img, i got clockwork 3.0.0.5.
5. download the su (super user) (i dunno if this is necessary but i did it anyway, links are in previous replies) and copy the zip file to ur sd card.
6. download the custom rom u want to use and copy to sd card as well (i use cyanogenmod 7.1 rc here)
7. download the google addon and copy the zip to the sd card as well (link provided in previous replies)
8. go to start and type cmd to load up command prompt in windows (i use windows 7)
9. get to c:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools\ (i use windows 7 64bit, if it's 32bit system, no need for (x86))
10. hold trackball + power to enter bootloader and fastboot usb enable (should be automatic)
11. type fastboot flash recovery [recovery name.img] (in Windows Command Prompt)
12. type fastboot boot [recovery name.img] (in windows command prompt)
13. do a backup first, then wipe all data and cache, and then navigate to "install zip" and install su, recovery fix, custom rom, google addon, one by one b4 restart
14. after all done, restart, and that's it.
it works for me. but of course, i'm pretty noob, you are still taking ur own risk if u follow my experience..
Step 5 (recovery fix) is only necessary if you are sticking with a stock ROM. All it does is delete the two files that restore the stock recovery. These two files are only in the stock ROM, which is why you don't need to do this if you install a custom ROM...
Also, as started earlier, you can also skip the su zip if you plan on installing a custom ROM...

[Q] Need Recovery Help!

OK, so I flashed one of the new leaked ICS stock ROMs and it appears that everything is ok. I'm digging all of the features including the panoramic camera. I decide that I want to put on Taboonay for a little flavor. I try to boot into recovery and this is what I get:
Erasing cache before SD update
SD update cmd: recovery
--update_Package=SDCARD:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image
(IN RED) Recovery verified failed
Yes, I tried to flash a recovery image through the ACER recovery install and the ROM Manager. Both of them flashed an image with no problem, until I actually tried to flash an image.
My question is this: How do I flash a recovery image if my bootloader is busted?
I do have ADB access , so it there a way I can copy a recovery image file directly onto the A500?
I appreciate the help!

Well, not sure if I can get you up and running. This is going to depend on if you followed traditional installation instructions that are posted on every thread that contains a Rom.
But first, let's cover where you went wrong. And that would probably be when you went back to Recovery. It seems, you didn't hit Vol - and PWR, but instead selected Vol + and PWR. And as such, it tried to run an update.zip file, which is a no-no. This resulted in a corrupted image.
Secondly, Rom Manager is a phone app. This will in most cases, bork your tab.
First, I would try Acer Installer (newest version) and try to install RA Recovery. If you were using CWM before, you probably can't flash it again.
If that doesn't work, then you will have to roll back from ICS, and you will need your original UID number. Hopefully you wrote this down somewhere. If you were using RA Recovery, you will find the UID number in the UID.txt on your SD Card in the Recovery folder (if you made a system backup before flashing ICS roms). If you were using CWM, well, it might be buried in one of the .img files in the clockwork folder (again, if you made a backup before flashing ICS). You will have to de-compile the image files to find it (hopefully).
If your ADB seems to be working, you may want to push the RA Recovery;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459821
If you have your original UID number, then you may want to try this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522384
or this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516012
Hope you get it going. From what I have seen, mostly when the people lose their recovery, they were using CWM. Haven't heard of any losing it when using RA Recovery. But anyhow, use Acer Recovery first, and try the RA Recovery.

[Q] Some help for a nub and ICS + Flashing ROM

Got ICS, OTA (download) installed that no problem, downloaded the acer usb drivers and used ICS Root (blackthund3r). Now i want to install LightSpeed 4.4 (i know theres a newer version) I renamed it update.zip and did the power button + V- button but it says invalid image.
Now im a bit confused cause all this android stuff is new to me, I have the acer recovery installed but im not sure what to do with it. Tried renaming it to recovery.img it says it is flashing but nothing happens.
Kinda lost at what to do or how to get this rom working.... if someone could point me in the right direction it would be sweet

Yep. That was pretty n00b of ya (that little trick only works on signed official roms, and even then, only ify-ify)
Check this thread. It has the tools you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
You can skip the part about installing an ICS rom and rooting. You already did that. You need to do steps 1, 2, (partial 4) 5 or 6 basically.
Note after you rooted. Look at step 4 and delete the required file like it says, before going to steps 5 or 6. You have an option on which package to use. Personally, I like the exe package. But your choice.
This installs patched b-loader and CWM recovery so you can flash ICS only Roms.
Easy
As you've Acer Recovery why the difficult way ? Just choose "Download / Install Roms, tick Lightspeed 4.4 in the left column, hit download and then install.
(i've version 2.74)
Fast, easy and no problems. I flashed Flexreaper 14 (now replaced by Flexreaper ICS RF1) and i can recommend it, the Rom and the way of flashing it.

Acer recovery is fine if it'll install the patched Bootloader.
However, it doesn't make a user get his UID number, which is essential in case something happens in the future. Without your UID, you're basically toasted Or you're in for the long haul in figuring out how to unbrick a tab.

You can't run that update.zip like you did. You got the error message.
Can you still boot into the 500 Rom? If so, you need to install a CWM Recovery before you can flash custom Roms. Look at the link below for instructions for CWM installation.
If you can't boot into your System, then you will need to do everything again.
You should still have your UID number when you tried to NVFlash the ver3 bootloader (I hope you wrote that number down)
You need to probably re-install the ver3 bootloader again as your attempt to install an update.zip messed things up. You just can't do it that way. So go here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1622425
Only this time, follow the instructions. You need to install CWM recovery. This is how to flash Roms, not putting update.zips on the SD card. And BTW, you should delete that update.zip from Your EXT SD Card. It will cause problems.
Also note, in those instructions, if you installed the FULL 500 ROM, you must delete a certain boot-p file before you install CWM Recovery. Or else it will delete it when you reboot the tab. Again, read the instructions.
The above steps install a 500 rom. The 500 DOES NOT have 3g like a 501. This is why you had no 3g. You have to install a 501 ICS Rom after, through CWM Recovery, and, currently, I have the only ICS Rom for the 501. And... it's a Beta release from Acer. But it works ok mostly.
Read the instructions, and understand exactly what you are doing. Also remember, with ver3 ICS Bootloader, YOU CANNOT INSTALL HC BASED ROMS without going back to an HC based bootloader. ICS Roms only. (unless you want to go back to stock).

Help, Blade can't get into recovery

I have been upgrading a friend's Blade but I've run into trouble. I rooted the froyo firmware and flashed CWM. Now if I try to boot into recovery via "adb reboot recovery" it somewhat works but if I try to get into the recovery via Vol - + Power it doesn't. It just gets stuck at splash screen and won't bulge. But if I have flashed a stock recovery I can boot into FMT. This is not the end of it though.
I went on to flash CM9 KonstaKANG release but wanted to do a reflash after doing TPT conversion, the TPT part went fine but now I later realised that I can't get into CWM. So...I got stuck. I flashed a Gen 2 stock via Windows and flashed a TPT image.bin I found that contained a stock 2.3.5 firmware. Brilliant, life saved...no? Turns out I can't root it, so I can't flash a custom recovery to it and boot into it in order to flash CM9. So....I did a bunch of other stuff and at this point the blade has a CWM recovery which I can't boot into, empty system partition and pretty much a boned status. I thought I'll flash a stock 2.2 TPT which I found at: http://amphoras.co.uk/downloads/blade-tpts but the one with a ROM are in some other format than TPT and I can't figure out how to flash them. Can anyone help me here?
Install rom manager (available in google play as a freeware) then flash clockwork mod recovery.
Now u can enter recovery with just 1 tap ie "reboot into recovery"
NOTE USB debugging should be enabled at all times
Add on:
You can root ur phone using an app named z4root.
To permanently root it search google and click the android modaco link
Sent from my Blade using xda app-developers app

Heh, not only have you screwed up CWM, you also converted your phone into a GEN3 phone in the process (by flashing that 2.3.5 TPT).
Easiest way to fix it:
1, download: http://bit.ly/yUi4Nu (stock partition layout, if you want a 160MB system layout use: http://bit.ly/wEO8Im )
2. unpack it to your sdcard (/image/image.bin)
3. flash it like you would any TPT
You should have CWM installed at this point (just press and hold vol- during bootup) and now you can flash whatever ROM you want to.

[Q] What to do after a brick?

Hello everyone.
I hope you can help me.
I had an A500 bricked spontaneously (I was checking Twitter, the screen frozen, I turned off the tablet and when I turned it on again, it stucked on Acer logo) so I used the guide to recover recovery (this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751978, because I rooted my tablet but I didn't install recovery).
Everything was ok, I flashed the V7-Thor v1.7.3 but when I tried to install stock ROM of ICS (wipe data and cache), the tablet got "re-bricked" and only enter in APX mode.
Then I reflashed and installed V8-Thor_1.7.3_recovery and I tried to install Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-DEODEXED-FULLROOT through update.zip (turned on the tablet in recovery --> Install from zip file --> Install zip file from SD card --> update.zip, then it said "Installed" and I rebooted the tablet, but it stuck on "Booting primary kernel image"...
What I'm missing or doing wrong? :/
What should I do to run ICS in my tablet again?
I'm not familiarized with the ROMs, Recoverys or flash... sorry if my question is stupid or something, but before this I never moved anything to my tablet (except for root it).
And sorry too for my bad English.

I think where you went wrong was choosing "install zip file from sdcard >update.zip"
Go back into recovery again > install from zip file > Choose zip from SD card (
if the file is on your micro sd card)
You should see a list of all your files and choose your rom file:
Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-DEODEXED-FULLROOT.zip
Once its done, Stay in recovery and go to: Wipe Menu and do all the wipes there
Data -cache and dalvi-cache then reboot
Once you're all set up and before you reboot again, make sure there is not an "update.zip" on your sdcard - if you boot to recovery it may flash automatically and you will end up "stuck" again
good luck

Data -cache and dalvi-cache then reboot
Once you're all set up and before you reboot again, make sure there is not an "update.zip" on your sdcard - if you boot to recovery it may flash automatically and you will end up "stuck" again
good luck

Thanks! I did it and it worked, but after the reboot the tablet only shows the animated android logo... what's the problem? The ROM?
When I did the "Wipe data" it said "Formatting data" and after "Skipping erase of /data/media". I checked with the "Mount and Storage" menu in recovery and seems like my data before the brick's still in the internal storage of the tablet... is that normal?
EDIT: what version of cwm to have now? If its not 1.7.3 then go ahead and reflash the v8

Yes it is - keeps your data intact but 'resets' the rom to like it is when you first flash, there is an option to wipe data/media if you wish to - theres a toggle to enable it but on every boot to recovery it will be disabled again...
You can try another flash of the rom itself otherwise reflash the v8 bootloader.
Do you have access to "fastboot mode" power vol down - just wondering

I tried to reflash the same ROM, but this time nothing happened, again only says "Booting primary kernel image"... a question, if I try to flash a stock ROM (like Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1.zip from the post of stock roms)... it will let my tablet again only in APX mode when I turn on it, right?
And I see the option "Fastboot mode" when I turn on the tablet holding Vol +.
About your question I don't know how to answer, I flashed V8-Thor_1.7.3_recovery... is that a CWM?
In the top it says CWM Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro/digetx rev 1.7.3) Iconia A50x...

sorry, not sure I understand your question...are you saying you're now stuck in apx mode - black screen power light on?
There are 2 types of stock rom on here....
1) Official Acer EUU or OTA roms
2) Official Stock roms which are Custom - pre-rooted and able to flash CWM etc -
If you flash one of the Acer EUU or OTA roms you will lose CWM and Root
To be honest - with your tab "spontaneously" booting and being stuck on the acer logo and the issues that have followed - its sounding more and more like a faulty chip - this is something that only acer can fix...I could be wrong about this and I hope I am...but something is just not feeling right...
- you still have cwm and access to fastboot - thats a bonus - maybe do a complete format thru CWM of data/media, system (and flexrom if its there) then try to flash a rom again - if it still won't flash AND if you're not stuck in apx mode then I think you'd be best to download an official update.zip - from Blackthund3rs thread here this one -
Acer_AV041_1.054.00_WW_GEN1:
Once you've d/l'ed it...try opening it if you can't then it will need decrypting the instructions for this are in the OP..
Once you have extracted the "update.zip" and have it on your sdcard - flash via CWM
good luck

What do you mean "If if its not 1.7.3"? Are there problems with flashing the bootloader with 1.7.3?

Hello everyone!
I have a similar issue whith my a500. but i can restore the backup i did of my honeycomb sistem in cwm (i have acess)
aftter making the backup i have flashed V8-Thor_1.7.3_recovery.a500apx in apxflashtool in order to get ics boot loader and install ICS roms.
so far so good after the flash i had already a ICS rom in my sd card redy to flash so imediatly after V8 flash entered cwm and did clean format and wipe all. Next installed the rom (aroma instalation) no problems what so ever. After instalation is finished reboted and now im stuck on skilax v8 bootloader boting primary kernel image
i tried the folowing
- chage kernel multiboot fix partitions redo clean format etc etc etc (ALL THE STEPS)
-many other ics jellybean rooms (all of the install but dont boot)
- honey comb rooms install and BOOT normaly.
at this point thought maybe it was a bad V8 flash and decided to reflash the V8-Thor_1.7.3_recovery.a500apx
Now the flash tool can get pass uploading image phase.
i have correct sbk and cpuuid since i had to recover last week from boot verified failed error and use the flash tool whith correct sbk to recover the tablet with sucess.
So basicly im stuck wit
h my honeycomb rom backup or other HC roms
any news on this subject?

Yes just one question what is - " chage kernel multiboot "???? Sounds dodgy
You can boot to fastboot mode then do an erase of data and cache, see if that helps for a start....
Do you stil have recovery and can you still restore your HC backup?
I have seen a post or two where tabs can only boot HC Roms and no ICS
It "maybe" the dreaded hardware fault - you might be best to d/l the babsector.rar and run that - it will give you a proper error if theres something wrong - can get it from the root guide in my sig. Give me a minute or two and I'll post some steps in using it
---------- Post added at 09:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:53 AM ----------
How to use babsector.rar
Download and extract the babsector.rar to a folder on your PC
Turn your tab off and put it in apx mode manually. Press and hold reset button, hold power for 3 secs after the light comes on and release it, after another second release the reset button. Your screen is black and the power light is on.
Connect your tab to your PC
Navigate to the babsector folder and click on 501 A.bat, when its done
Reboot into recovery
Go to Mounts and Storage and Format System twice and Power Off
Go back into apx mode and run 501 B.bat
Reboot into recovery and do the wipes and flash your rom
Reboot
