Just tried, and no, kingo does not work on devices that WERE NOT rooted before the OTA
So I guess anyone who like me who didnt root before the OTA are screwed at the moment

Actually, i think i may have solved this. It worked for me when I plugged it into my computer, after I removed the micro SD card from it.
I guess the phone has to be in installer mode when connected to USB, and it seems like removing the micro SD card did that

This just confirms that we WONT be getting an update any time soon to 4.4.
Both Samsung and ATT have some sort of BS going on. Probably something with the additional bloatware not working with 4.4 and is the reason why they have not released 4.4 to the public.
This type of BS may push me over the edge with both Samsung and ATT.
Samsung needs to pull an Apple and not allow any carriers to add junk to their phones, thats one thing I respect about Apple.

Just made sure the phone had USB Debugging on and put it in MTP mode when plugged into USB. Other than that I just let Kingo do its thing. It did reboot one time during the root process but was re-detected by Kingo after restarting and the process continued. Also got the warning about mtkCamera being potentially unsafe during part of the process but told it to goahead anyway. Using Kingo 1.2.0

If you have already installed driver correctly, but still "Device not connected" with Kingo. This is the ULTIMATE SOLUTION for you.
Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar, and then clicking "Start Task Manager".
You can also open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
Find adb.exe and right click it. Then select "End process tree"
Close Kingo Android Root and then re-launch it.
after all this plz make a restart to your machine

Flash the stock firmware via odin, that removes the protection and you can sign in with your own gmail account.
Stock Firmwares can be downloaded here.
Just select your Country, should be Netherlands (no carrier phone, unbranded, RegionHN Version: G935FXXU1APBF) and download the correct Firmware.

Even if you update, you should be able to Odin back to the root file...as you can odin back to the original official tar. The update only adds wifi calling and some smaller fixes.
I have the update, have not installed it. I am not rooted, so don't know how to pull it off for others. But will be glad to if someone tells me how on my unrooted phone, if possible.

Out of curiosity, where on the phone was the download stored?
Oops, just read more carefully, you don't know where it is. I have pulled them before, but don't remember where. It's not the obvious places like "Download". I think it was in a cache folder. Use a root explorer and look around in the system folder.

I'm pretty sure it is downloaded to the system folder somewhere (cache maybe?). Without root, you'll never get to it.
I figured as much but it seemed like people were interested having non rooted people look.
It's odd cause this is the first non rooted phone I've ever had. I'm holding out to see if we get the boot loader unlocked and custom roms. If not I'm going to skip root this time around.

I'm in the same boat. I need my Gear S to work and it doesn't with the rooted rom we have now.
I'm surprisingly happy with it unrooted. I did buy Adguard, because I can't stand ads. Other than that, all good. If my plan didn't include HotSpot, it might be a different story.
http://arstechnica.com/security/201...ed-by-most-serious-linux-escalation-bug-ever/
Article says "From what I can tell, in theory it should be able to root every device since Android 1.0. Android 1.0 started on [Linux] kernel [version] 2.6.25, and this exploit has been around since [Linux kernel version] 2.6.22.".
Does this mean we'll have a reliable and stable root soon?
Root nightmare
If I'm posting in the wrong section I apologize. But I also want to know if a more reliable version of Route will be available because I have tried 2 different methods listed on this site to root my Verizon S7 and it ruined my phone. Got stuck in boot loop and then when I finally got it to restore after doing a complete firmware reset it's now half functional half not and there's the constant security warning on my phone stating that unauthorized modifications have been made to security reboot phone.. it won't go away. I'm not an idiot I followed the directions fine and my phone is now Jacked. I'm just asking does anyone know of a method that truly works or a way from me to fix the situation there's too many different options listed on the site thank you
Rowhammer exploit might be better but I'm no development so no idea.

Don't think anyone has a permanent root using this method yet. Still hoping a dev will compile this or rowhammer for us. Only issue I can come up with is DMVerity

DMVerity is the main problem here. It isn't root really. No matter what we do to /system DMVerity will shoot it down. root isn't our issue I think, it's the bootloader.

not familiar with the note 4 situation. But basically I think Samsung finally figured out that the linux kernel will somehow always be exploited one way or another. I mean it's linux and people understand linux well, it's been around forever. So Samsung created something that keeps an eye on /system(i think this is how it works) and if it sees an unauthorized change it bricks. I may be wrong here someone feel free to correct me.
