If Web Browsing is main criterion, which is better tablet? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this in xperia z forum as well.....
Default [Q] If Web Browsing is main criterion, which is better tablet?
I know this is subjective question that is hard to get an answer on but I thought I would try. I do other things like use some apps, watch movies occasionally and listen to music, I use a tablet, however, mostly for web browsing. I greatly prefer android's ecosystem to apple's and have always had android phones (just got an lg g2 which I like a lot). I once owned an assus transformer prime and liked it but someone gave me an ipad and the ipad is just plain a lot easier to web browse on. It scrolls smoother and pages load quicker and render better. I pretty much stopped using the prime after I got the ipad.
I love android though and have a hankering to give it another try especially since the prime didnt turn out to be a very good tablet anyway. I am down to deciding between the xperia z and the google nexus 10. While the nexus 10 should theoretically be better and it is cheaper on sale right now, if you go by xda forums, the people on xperia tablet z forum seem a lot happier in general with their sony's than nexus 10 people are with theirs.
Question if anyone knows, if web browsing is your main issue, is the xperia better or worse than the nexus 10 (I do not want to get a 7 inch tablet so new nexus 7 is not an option). Or are they both the same? And then I guess the real question is whether either tablet is as good as the ipad for web browsing if anyone here has any actual experience with that.?

Couldn't tell you.
I never purchased an Xperia in order to have an opinion about that tablet.
That stated..... The Google Nexus 10 tablet rocks. I've not regretted my decision for purchasing it yet.
The only question will be if the new N10 is out this year or next. But the existing N10 with 4.3 is a real solid champ. Just started using 4.4, but I suspect it'll be even better.

As you said, it's subjective, but I've had a Nexus 10 for a few months now and do a lot of web browsing on it and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've used the iPad too, and honestly I prefer the user experience on the Nexus 10, it continues to feel a lot smoother (including with the fresh KitKat update).
I'm afraid I haven't used an xperia either. However, when I purchased, the Nexus 10 was the best tablet on the market as far as any specs were concerned. The display continues to blow me away - it doesn't seem like it would matter much, but it does. It's so much easier on my eyes.

Never used Xperia, except for playing with it in store a a bit. Nexus 10 has been good for me since I got it (couple weeks ago). Now on 4.4, performing like a champ. It has replaced a 3rd gen iPad very handily. Only downside I've seen is that the WiFi seems a little finicky. Works great with phone hotspot, home network, but has issues with one business I frequent, but I think that is more an issue of their network/router than the N10 (son's Tae Kwan Do studio, where they provide WiFi for parents while waiting).

I haven't used the Xperia Tablet Z or the iPad, but the Xperia might be a bit better than the Nexus 10 because it doesn't have as high-res a display, so it may not have to allocate as much memory to it. You only get to use 1.1 GBs of the 2 GBs of memory on the Nexus 10, because the rest is set aside for the high-res display, so if you open a lot of tabs, it probably starts killing them earlier than the Tablet Z does. I thought I'd do a lot of web browsing on my Nexus 10, but I don't do quite as much because of this long-standing problem on Android.
If I were you, I'd try out these devices in a store and see how they do when browsing. I have almost no experience with the iPad, but if it holds browser tabs much better, it might be a better choice than Android. Also, the iPad Air and Xperia are closer to 1 lb, the Nexus 10 has always felt a bit heavy to me at 1.3 lbs. I'd never buy an Apple device because of their crazy patent stance, but if Apple is an option for you, the iPad Air might be a better choice for you.

Want the opinion of someone who has ipad2 and xoom on 3.1

My roommate was test driving a xoom and he eventually settled on ipad2. When I took the xoom for a test drive and directly compared the youtube streaming (mortal kombat miniseries "legacy") the ipad2 was way smoother/better. Does 3.1 close this gap? This is one of the deal breaker items for me and I wanted to hear if anyone had an opinion.
where did he test the two? did they have the same connection? ive never had any issues streaming youtube on mine....
Both at my house over wifi. It's not a "problem" per se, however, when directly compared I could clearly see it was not as smooth. I think it might be an issue of flash implementation with honeycomb.
3.1 is noticeably faster than 3.0 so yes the gap is closed! Much more stable also. Whether the gap is completely removed, I'm not so sure. The one thing the iDevices do well is smoothness and I think if you choose to be picky android, although just as fast, is not consistently as smooth. I will say however that some parts are very smooth so it may just be a case of developers catching up and making better use of hardware acceleration. I firmly believe android has much more potential than the current iOS and the apple philosophy of 'do a little, but do it well'. Just looking forward to seeing 3.1's potential fully realised.
Ps. YouTube is one of the apps which is much better in 3.1
Was this through the YouTube app or the browser?
I dont remember. They're not equal?
You tube app doesn't use flash, so flash implementation wouldn't matter. And if it was in browser it would have used html5 on both xoom and ipad (both are webkit browsers)
In browser would be the best comparison.

Well, if this helps at all, I bought the I pad 2 and returned it within 48 hours. That thing sucks out loud. Bought a Xoom 2 days later and havent looked back even once. And I am NOT an Apple hater - I was an iPhone user until about 8 months ago, one of those stand-in-line-on-release-day types since day 1 of iPhone 1.
iOS on the iPad doesn't even begin to hold a candle to honeycomb. The best way I can describe the difference in the UIs is like Windows 3.1 vs. Windows 7. I absolutely hated it.
Honeycomb is not as smooth in terms of scrolling, which is a bit of an annoyance, yes, but its certainly no less fast overall.

I have both the iPad 2 and the Xoom, and they're both great devices in their own right. The iPad 2 is definitely smoother than the Xoom over all. However, the Xoom can do so much more than the iPad ever thought about. Until the Xoom came out, I was a die-hard iPad fan, and I carried my original iPad every where I went. When the iPad 2 came out, I sold the original to my mother-in-law and got the iPad 2. At the time, I thought that it would be the end of my tablet-buying for the year. Then I got a chance to play with a Xoom and I had to have one. Since I got the Xoom, the iPad has become my wife's tablet and the Xoom now goes every where with me.
All that being said, I'll leave you with this: I remember reading an early review of the Xoom where the reviewer stated that you either know you want one or you don't. I knew that I wanted one and I couldn't be happier with mine. However, if you're looking for an iPad-esque experience, this ain't it. The 3.1 update has done a lot to polish the rough edges that Android has, but there are still some things that feel half-baked. However, if you've already got an Android phone then you know that things get better over time. Case in point: when the HTC Evo 4G came out, it was a great phone but the overall experience was lacking in a few places. HTC promptly released the 2.2 update followed by a few maintenance updates that turned the phone into a beast. I feel that the Xoom will follow a similar paradigm.
I did a review over here. Head over to take a look and hopefully this 2-miniseries review (both general and apps focused) will be helpful~
2-miniseries Part 1
2-miniseries Part 2
It is pretty simple (not like those major portals), but it is from a very ordinary users' view and most importantly, someone who spent 650 USD on the device.
If it is helpful, don't buy me a beer. Search through my searchbox on my site or take a look at my sponsors great products on the link. Appreciated! =)
I have an ipad 2 and recently got a 3G Xoom as a gift. I've played with the Xoom when it first came out and the OS was basically one giant FC with browser and most apps crashing left and right. However 3.1 took care of that and now everything is much smoother. The ipad has way more and better apps.BUT honeycomb OS is much better suited for tablets and since it's a pure Google device you can tweak the hell out of it. The ipad has superior hardware and apps, but being tied to iTunes and having to employ rediculous work arounds to perform simple tasks due to no file system access makes it pretty worthless for most work related tasks. If you just want a toy then the ipad is great, while Xoom is a better productivity tool and more of laptop replacement.

I remember when the Xoom first launched I went to check it out at BB. The experience wasn't all that great and it didn't feel smooth. I settled with an iPad 2 on launch day. I love the iPad and all it has to offer but I couldn't stand not having Flash, Customization & Jailbreak. I watch a lot of Youtube (everyday) but I prefer to do that on a computer.
Since the 3.1 update things have sped up and the OS is much faster. I ended up trading my iPad 2 for my Xoom from a local person on CL. I still have the iPad 1 to fall back on for the apps.
I owned an ipad 2 previous to my xoom.
I think that has spoiled me and now I find myself complaining that the xoom isn't as smooth as the ipad2
but things like flash, real multitasking, widgets made me stick with my xoom even though it has its lagging issues

[Q] Transformer Infinity, Note 10.1, or Nexus 10?

New to the forums, looking to by my first tablet. Not really interested in the ipad 3. I want a tablet which will be good for watching videos and playing a bit of games, also want a good web browser. Which tablet will be ideal out of these 3? My budget is $500, so the price factor doesnt really matter. Neither the s pen or the keyboard dock appeal to me. Thanks!
The Infinity would be the worst drain of money you could even consider. For its price, the hardware is underpowered - typing on it right now, Browser (stock, not Chrome - it's too slow to run Chrome smoothly) force closed (this is TF700 hate-post V2) and the keyboard froze for a good 10 sec when I got back in. Build quality and the like is down to chance, but even if you get a well-built one, the I/O sucks, Tegra 3 can't push 1080p without crying to its mother and to be honest, Asus' software updates are unreliable. The alarm clock's still broken from the one before last.
The Nexus 10, on the other hand, has the most powerful processor in any mobile device right now, and it is well-equipped to power the much, much higher resolution it has to offer. You can pretty much guarantee that it will provide you with the best Android has to offer on tablets both now and for a long time into the future. The Infinity is already obsolete.
Also, the Note's only real draw is the S Pen, though for some that is pretty significant (it's like a Wacom tablet computer). So if that isn't what you're after, save yourself some money and grab the Nexus 10.
The NEXUS hands down, 100%. It is the fastest Tab on the earth with the best screen of all. If only I did not buy a N7.
If I was looking to buy a 10in tab, then I would go for the nexus 10.

I'm still within my return period at Best Buy -- and will be bringing my Infinity and dock back, and getting a Nexus 10. Build quality for mine is fine -- actually very solid, nice form factor, superb battery and nice display. But it IS a bit laggy, and between ASUS and NVidia, there's way too much in the way of arcane routines to go through in order to unlock, root and safely flash it. Nexus 10 promises to be a much better experience in this respect. I'll be getting the 32GB N10.
If the Nexus 10 had 3G then I don't think I would hesitate to chose it, I have a nexus 7 and I'm thinking about giving it to my wife and getting a new Nexus 7 32GB+3G version, from the look of how the nexus 7 is going, I may just wait for the Nexus 10 in a few months when they bring out the 64GB+3G nexus 10 (although 32GB is probably more likely, I may just hold out for the 3G version)
Thanks for the input guys. Do you guys think the nexus 10 will get custom Rom like the cleanrom on the tf700, because I would like flash lol.

Nexii have classically been rom magnets, though there is always the danger that they've finally released enough to dilute this effect. Also important is the number of users, which is also correlated to the number of roms. The 10 inch android tablet is not proven (but this is probably its best chance).
CleanRom on the Infinity is an Asus ROM, trimmed lovingly. It's still a manufacturer ROM, though, and I would bet you 2 Nexus 10's that the Asus UI never makes it to the n10.
I returned my infinity for the reasons in post 2. I'm not bitter, I just think my $500 is better spent elsewhere when my phone is better than my tablet...

Sorry for my horrible knowledge on the devices lol im new to all this, after all, I'm coming from an apple product. Will there still be a way to obtain flash on the n10?

It's not worth spending your money on TF700T because it lags crazy! I'm finally Unlocked (Clean rom 2.3) But what's the point? I just voided my warranty for a device that can't run smoothly without a Custom Rom. Get a device that actually runs smoothly without any type of tweaking.
My Infinity works great but It's not the same feeling like i had before i unlocked it (Fear of Bricking). I might even buy N10, Hopefully i don't get same experience i had on infinity.
Since that is cleared up, I would say Nexus 10 seems like a better deal in Hardware but If you want features like S-Pen and what not then Note is great. But at end of the day, you will be frustrated with slow OS than not having the features (S-Pen, Multiscreen)
Wait till there are couple of reviews for Nexus 10, I will not buy anything else until i see a video for it.
TF700T Disappointed me.

yea, if I were you I would avoid the TF700, especially if you don't want/need a keyboard dock.
It has a nice deisgn, and a great screen, but it is laggy as crap and I haven't rooted mine so the overall experience sucks.
On paper it's almost the perfect tablet. Unfortunately Asus really dropped the ball on this one.
I'm probably getting the Nexus 10. Then selling it if Asus makes a really nice Transformer replacement at CES. Or I'm switching to Windows 8. I have no idea what I want to do.
People , I was checking the App store , and found a good number of Apps supported for the tablet , Apple may boast a 275000 app selection , but many of them are just show off (like the brain explorer , titanic time) and so forth , they look good for a couple of weeks , until their charm fades away
The main ones are content comsumption apps , and the market has a handful of them (CNN , cnbc , even TV streams) Google docs on google drive is a charm to use.
PLus I wont be bogged down by itunes all the time ,

Mm. One of my key reasons for not buying anything Apple is to use one to its fullest, you need the whole iRange, and Mac has the disadvantage vs Windows when it comes to ecosystem (especially games) so I don't really want to.

If you want a Mac and don't hate your money:
Buy a wicked Windows PC/laptop for 1/3 the price of a mac with comparable hardware
Do this
Use in full screen mode
Profit
To those who are saying the Note 10.1 and the Transformer Infinity are ****ty tablets, how could you possibly think that? Have you never used a Coby tablet running GB?
To answer the OPs question, don't buy a tablet at all. Tablets are transitional technology, they won't be around forever and the ones that are brand new depreciate in six months and become totally outdated in a year. Even if tablets weren't a completely pointless waste of money, even if you could find some productive use for it that would make it practical for you to own one, no matter what tablet you buy it will be totally outdated in a year. So I say spend your money on something else.
After having all three, I'm holding on to my Nexus 10. The my experience with the ASUS TF700 was frustrating, and after multiple returns for a variety of issues I got a "good" one. Stock it's a frustrating experience, and making the necessary modifications voids your warranty.
The Note was a great tablet, although I'm not a fan of TouchWiz it wasn't so bad. It stomped the TF700 in web browsing too. The S-Pen was a novelty for me though, so I figured I'd save some money.
The Nexus is a beast, no regrets.

For your requirements, watching movies and playing games, I'd recommend:
1) Galaxy Note 10.1
The CPU/GPU and resolution are balanced right and all games are fast. Screen on battery life is consistently ~8 hours. Benefit is it's not just a consumption device but also creativity and productivity with pen for drawing, paperless note taking, etc. Price was dropped to $499 for 32GB version to compete with Nexus 10.
2) Nexus 10
Has potential but games need to be optimized for it and the ridiculously high resolution. Battery life, sound quality and screen quality are behind Galaxy Note 10.1. It's a brand new device so there are minor issues that need to be addressed with the upcoming OS updates.
Skip the Tegra3 Infinity. When looking at Google Play comments for games I always see people reporting performance and games not working on TF201/300/700 devices while it's fine on other devices. I had the Nexus 7 and some games like Nova 3, etc. are laggy while fine on the other devices.
Another option unless you're anxious to get something now is to wait closer to Christmas and hope for new devices to appear. A Galaxy Note 12" 1080p with 4-core Exynos 5450, 4GB DRAM, etc. would be ideal.

Xoom vs Xoom 2 (Xyboard 10.1) vs iPad 3 on Verizon LTE

Over the last few months I've decided to get a Verizon Tablet. I have a RAZR MAXX (Considering MAXX HD, HTC DNA or iP5) and have played musical tablets recently.
I really dislike paying full price for things and usually pickup my gadgets from deal sites, eBay or Craigslist.
My first entry into tablets was the HTC Flyer, it was far from smooth and I sold it quickly.
I then got a great deal on a Xoom. I liked the concept. I installed Jelly Bean, Overclocked it a bit for some extra oomph. I felt it was still a bit too slow and heavy.
I traded up to a XYBoard 10.1 (Xoom 2) with ICS and I like it a lot better. Its much slimmer and noticeably quicker...though the rotate takes FOREVER!
I ended up finding a 2 month old iPad 3 64GB LTE with a smart cover thing for $500. I just had to get it. I was hoping it'd be the pinnacle of smoothness and freedom from glitches....its not.
I do think the web browser runs much much smoother than Android, but its not perfect, there are page and image reloads. Its also not that much faster on page loading than the Xyboard, sometimes getting beat by it.
I do have to say, the screen is absolutely gorgeous. I've complained about low quality and low resolution displays since 1998, its one of my major pet-peeves.
The iPad is super super clear.
I'm at a bit of a loss. I haven't played with the iPad long enough to make up my mind, but I feel like there's so much it can't do that i didn't even give a second thought to on Android.
Anybody here come from an Apple product or switch to one?

I have an iPad 2 and a Xoom 2 Media Edition with ICS...
iPad 2 is a far, far, far smoother ride... There is no comparison whatsoever, rotation, screen lock, battery life (Xoom 2 you need to enter airplane mode if you don't want it to suck battery in standby, iPad 2 will use much less battery in standby with connections active), apps for tablets are way better (take for instance any magazine that is published using Adobe tools, Adobe Content Viewer in Android sucks and lacks lots of features and most magazines interactive features doesn't work), games are way better and the list goes on and on and on...
But, Xoom 2 was a real bargain. I needed a second tablet, lighter and smaller, I was going to wait for the iPad Mini, but a TelCo in Brazil had a really amazing offer, contract free Xoom 2 ME costing the equivalent to 140 bucks (considering the prices of other tablets in comparison to the US.), brand new, WiFi and 3G, 32GB onboard memory...
Considering what I paid, it is really awesome. Taking money out of the equation, I consider an iPad way better for my tablet use (mostly media and games, e-book and Comics reading, magazines, music, web browsing). I already have a Galaxy Nexus and use it for work and all the advantages that Android have over iOS, IMHO, I can use in my phone, and, use a way smoother and better experience for what I do with a tablet with an iOS device.
Even if you consider Nexus 10, it still has all the "tablet issues" that plague Android for ages, and that are taking way too much time to get solved... That Adobe Content Viewer issue I've mentioned is known since the original Xoom launched, Premium Game Producers (and Apps as well) do not see Android as a priority and usually ports take ages and sometimes sucks, if the App/Game is ported...
Now, a lot of people might argue about freedom, I can install whatever I want from whatever source I want (good luck finding Infinity Blade or an ICS/JB compatible Peggle or any decent music playing game experience that sound doesn't take a while to play after you touched the virtual instrument, etc), better Google services integration (that is a fact, but I use my mobile phone to take advantage of that), Widgets, replacing keyboard, lock screen, possibility to transfer media and do not use iTunes, etc... If those are important factor in a tablet for you, then, Android it is, if it is not, but you favor premium content, overall smoothness, iPad is miles ahead in that department...
My biggest complaint so far is trouble finding a good YouTube player and the slow app store. I'm starting to like this ipad more and more.
I think it might be wise to stick to Android for phones though.
Well I really like the smoothness of the ipad, but I missed a few emails because I have a smart cover and it unlocks right away. I didn't see the app icon counter and there is no static icon or anything to signal you to pull down the notification bar.
I grabbed my Android phone and of the blinking status light wasn't enough, there was a mail icon in the notification bar telling me something happened.
I like the smoothness, but I really don't like missing things because I wasn't using it at the exact moment the email came in.

Should i buy... N10,N7 or a digital camera?

So im not sure if i should buy the Nexus 10 the Nexus 7 or a Sony H30V digital camera:silly: Is there a huge difference in performance between the N7 and N10 wondering if anyone here owns both and can give me a better advice on what to get, I currently own a Nexus 4 but i want a bigger screen mostly to browse the internet
I had an N7 and it was great in every way, however after about 2 months I quickly realized it was too small. Reading books and light browsing was good, however zooming in and out on websites got old. I now have an N10 and am very happy. I am just a big tablet guy, but the N7 is much more portable. Both tablets are great, however the question is what size tablet person are you........or get the camera. Good luck, but there is no bad choice

N10 is actually faster than the N7 is... a lot faster. However, it also overheats more and thus throttles the processor, which makes it lag a lot when the processor is heated. From experience, the throttling starts around 5 races in NFSMW, and around 3 multiplayer matches in MC4. Normal usage, probably not a problem at all.
Battery life is awesome, especially with custom kernels. On stock, it's around 10-12 hours web browsing, etc.
Screen size is your preference, though the 1600p screen is amazing. I've heard that if you buy it from the Play store, you get less light bleed issues, but I'm not sure. I got it from the Play store, and mine is fine.
All N10's have a little bit of a multitouch issue in which if you put your palm on it, the touchscreen will be very wonky to touches, but it will reset itself within a few seconds. N7 has its own multitouch issues.
In short, I'd go for the N10 over the 7

Throttling (to an extent) can be lessened via undervolting luckily
As for a camera; I find my Nexus 10 perfect for a camera. 5MP is around the same resolution that's view-able on the N10 (if I understand right anyway), and pictures come out pretty clear; it's the best camera I've ever owned
With that said though, apparently most people laugh at the idea of using tablets for cameras... I find it pretty cool though
I purchased the N10 mostly for games when I'm not near my Desktop, and so far it's managing to do that pretty well Only gaming-related issue I have is that osu!droid doesn't like multi-touch for whatever reason (had the same issue on my Nexus 7), but hopefully that'll get fixed at some point.
Thanks so much for your feedback guys i'm leaning more towards the N10 at the moment, i went to sam's club and played around with the N7 i found it kind of small for me, but the fact that the N10 is sold out, and that the price for the sony camera and the N7 combined is just as much as the N10 is making harder to make a decision.
I just don't wanna get the N7 and end up disappointed its the performance
I've got both and I still like and use my N7.
The N10 is definitely faster and has the better screen. The N7 is no slouch though, before the N10 it was the fastest tablet I've used or owned and I've used and owned quite a few (Asus, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Apple). I like that it's portable and its pretty good for gaming, the Tegra3 is very capable.
For one handed use the N7 is better, it feels like a slightly larger version of my N4 whereas the N10 provides a completely different experience.
It really depends on what you're looking for, I've found uses for both because they do different things.
For the money, both are excellent value and you can't go wrong. Just determine what you'd really do with it and go from there.

The N10 is a better/nicer device in almost every way except portability. I still love the N7 for its portability and it holds its own performance wise too.
Hopefully things will get even better for the N10 as games/apps are optimized for the screen resolution and as more devs get involved and google shoots out some updates.

10.1.2014 versus Sony Xperia Tab Z

I've seen lots of discussion comparing with the various iPads, but not much discussion on the Sony Xperia. I was pretty much sold on the Note originally as I LOVE my S3 phone, but I must admit I do see the reason behind all the negative Samsung reactions in terms of bloatware. Man do they put a bunch of junk on there! Luckily I have my S3 rooted and have successfully turned off bunches of bloat, and the phone is now massively faster . . . . . even on the stock ROM.
The more I play with the Xperia and read the reviews, the more I like it. The biggest 2 drawbacks in comparison are (1) lower screen resolution and (2) no S-pen. Neither one of those are deal brakers for me, but they do factor into the overall decision.
So, I know I'll get lots of pro-Samsung comments given the forum I'm in, but I'd like some honest feedback. Has anyone had lots of time with both tabs that can give some user level insight as to which way they would recommend? I have no doubt both are quality devices. Just trying to make a smart spend with my hard earned $. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance.

P.S. The new Kindle HDX is sneaking into the discussion, too. It has a *whopper* of a set of specs at a great price point. Root and install a well-built custom ROM, and maybe it kills all of them??

I love the resolution and feel of the 10.1 2014 but hate lack of root (0x0) and the physical button. S-Pen is a must for me or I would probably just go with the upcoming Nexus 10 refresh.
I really just wanted to say.....GO VOLS
Are you saying root and custom Roms won't be possible on the 2014? THAT would be a deal breaker for sure! Haven't looked much at the N10, but I guess I should. When is refresh product due out?
And on the Big Orange, I firmly believe Butch is the man to get it done. Our true freshmen have shown some "sparks" here and there. Just don't have the exp or conditioning to bring it for 60 solid minutes. I remain big time optimistic we are finally headed back up. Goodness knows we mist definitely bottomed out over the last few seasons. Wow.

The Xperia Tab Z was my first choice was as I have an Xperia Z1 phone, however I ended up returning the XTZ after a couple of days and getting the new Note 10.1.
The biggest issue with the XTZ for me was the video playback quality. When viewing 1080p movies it seemed to be dropping frames, and as well Netflix and Youtube playback was no where close to my iPad. I didn't want a situation where I was only able to use the tablet for some things and then had to go back to using my iPad for watching movies or reading ebooks. There is also the issue of the Bravia engine on the XTZ which seemed to be putting too much contrast and sharpening into all of the videos and images. I can understand why they are using Bravia as it does give the illusion of a slightly higher resolution display, but it's no where near iPad quality.
The XTZ is a great tablet though, and if the Note 10.1 didn't exist it would be the Android king without a doubt.
The best thing for me about the Note 10.1 is that it is capable of doing everything with pretty much state of the art quality. I've had a few jaw dropping moments with it where the display truly give the illusion of looking through a window. It's fantastic for video playback.
It's been a long time coming to finally get an Android tablet that matches or exceeds the iPad and I'm so far pretty thrilled with my 10.1.

What are your comments on the bloatware and all the built-in Samsung apps? Did you delete or disable a bunch of those? And I doubt I'll be doing much movie watching on the tab, but I do like to play some of the higher end games every now & then. Currently read a lot of e-books on a rooted Nook Tablet, but hoping the new device will ultimately replace that as well. And I agree that one of your obvious goals is one of mine. Use 1 tablet for pretty much everything outside of phone & texting with my S3.
I also remember now why I punted the Nexus . . . . . no SD card. That plus constantly changing connectors plus the "do it our way or not at all" mentaility is the main reason I moved away from Apple products. I used iPhones up through the 4 models, and then made the Android switch. Haven't looked back on that particular decision!

Truth. The display is the best I've ever seen on a tablet. At full brightness it's absolutely incredible. The functionality of the SPen was the main draw for me with this tablet though. If you're a student or work in a setting that demands a lot of note taking then this tablet is the way to go. If I didn't need these functions, I would have waited for the new Nexus 10, which I'm sure will be superb as well. The ability to use this tablet as a virtual notebook for all of my classes made this the right choice for me though, even though it was quite expensive.
I currently own both of these tablets Samsung better screen better speakers and its faster I would go with the Samsung myself but the Sony is a nice tablet I have it running pacman ROM and it is very smooth
I am going to China on the weekend and was actually thinking of returning my samsung taking the Sony with me and then trying to find the 10.1 LTE version in Hong Kong on my way home so on a side note does anyone know how much the LTE version will cost in Hong Kong and a good place to buy it thanks

I loved my Z while I had it. My only complaint was that bad boy was a fingerprint magnet. I haven't yet tried a Note 10.1 2014 because there is no development for it or the Note 3.

As far as I know, 10.1 2014 is not yet available in Hong Kong.

So far all I have done is install Nova Launcher and turn down the animations to 0.5 in the developer settings. This makes it more than fast enough for me and I am not going to root or flash until we get a look at more finalized OTA firmwares. I know there are a lot of early reviewers that say this tablet lags, but since the first OTA update it has been running as quickly as one would expect it to.
I'm completely thrilled with this tablet, I can finally get rid of my IPad.
I've had the chance to own both for a while and there's pros and cons to each. The xperia was light, quick enough, NFC, DLNA, etc. Screen was good for movie watching. Expandable memory. Water proof. And it seemed less bloated although it really does have a crap load of Sony stuff on there. On the flipside, as one user said, it was a finger print magnet. It also felt extra long in portrait mode. Luckily it's a light tablet so it's not super uncomfortable but it does create a weird experience in portrait. Also, being a snapdragon s4 chipset, it's significantly slower during intense operations or even if you put a live wallpaper like ditalix live wallpaper on it.
The note has all the specs necessary, minus NFC. S pen is great just like my note 3. Screen in gorgeous. Relatively light in the hands. But again, as another user mentioned, the physical button is quite annoying in portrait mode and for a tablet so expensive, there should be no stuttering. Rooting is a fix for that though.
Although, neither was meant for portrait use, Web browsing feels more natural in portrait mode, much like the ipad. I still own both tablet, along side the ipad air. Note 10.1 2014 is my productivity beast at work and I travel with it. The xperia is my wife's favorite because she can read in the pool with it without a care, and takes it to the beach. The ipad is my favorite at home. Perfect for browsing the Web, chromecasting content, watching videos in bed, reading magazines, etc. Although, the note can do those things perfectly fine, it just doesn't have the same feel as the ipad for me when I'm in lazy mode.
Basically, if you u spend a lot of time outside with the tablet, xperia. If you need productivity first, note. If you want an all around great experience without all the bells and whistles, ipad.

To echo this, I would go into Best Buy to play with the tablets all the time, coming closer and closer to pulling the trigger to purchasing but stopping. When I read the specs of this tablet, I had to bite and I've been rewarded immensely for my purchase. I've had those jaw dropping moments as well. I ask it to do so much and it's almost like it's mocking me, tackling everything I throw at it with ease.
Between the Note and the Xperia, it all comes down to the screen. The Note wins, hands down.
I do like the whole waterproof thing, and it's a touch lighter than the Note. But the large bezels really make it feel clunky and less weildy in landscape mode. Samsung's decision to trim the bezels really pays off in usability. It feels closer to the iPad in portrait mode even though it's still the same 16:10 screen.
BTW, another area where the Note wins hands down is reading comic books. It's the closest thing to the printed page. I am awed by how great comic books look on the Note, even though the pages are less resolution than the screen itself.
I was looking at buying the xperia but decided to wait for this to come out. I tried both of them in a shop and the xperia was too bezzly for me and the screen of the Note was unreal. Anyways I just got my Note about an hour ago and the screen alone makes this awesome.
I have had a Xperia Tablet Z since it was released and its very nice. My wife loves it as well. The thing that is nice is that its extremely fast and has no lag. I am very impressed with the build quality, and battery life as well. I am not a fan of the case I have on it because it is a el cheapo leather case that is not that impressive. That doesn't detract from how happy I am with this tablet.
I am going to get a Note 10.1 2014 through work in the next week or so. When that comes in, I will give my wife the Xperia since she loves it. I think the Note 10.1 is going to be better for what I do than the Xperia. I am most worried about lag or response time with this device. I am going to use Nova launcher for sure, and root the device if possible.
One area where the Note beats the Xperia hands down is remote desktop. The MS app defaults to 1280 x 800 on the Note and is very fast. It defaults to 1980 x 1200 on the Xperia and chugs along with lots of tiling with tiny touch targets. The SPen allows you to hit touch targets too small for your finger and allows you to hover over links and menus. It's a fantastic rdp implementation on the Note but almost unusable on the Xperia.
