YouTube video stutter on 4.4 - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hi,
Since upgrading to 4.4 I'm experiencing stutter/jitter on YouTube videos.
I've tried factory wiping the device and it's the same, I've flashed the SinLessROM and it's the same. Only 4.3 didn't have the issue.
Is anyone else experienced this and is there a solution??
Thanks!
EDIT:
I would like to gather some data of units having/not having this issue respectively to see if I can isolate the cause:
If possible, please can you supply the following information:
1) How you upgraded to 4.4 (OTA, sideload, custom build of official 4.4. ROM, etc)
2) Are you using stock/custom kernel (if custom, which one?)
3) If you factory reset/wiped at any stage
4) Version of YouTube app
5) Link to an HD YouTube video that you can play without any stutter (it may be I/we are just choosing 'bad' videos)
I was using this video for testing and get the stutter on the device, so fi you can play this video as well and report back that would be great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v2L2UGZJAM
Thanks guys!

Just checked and mine seems to not be as smooth as it was before as well.

Somewhat related, I have the LG Nexus 7 phone with everything stock on it and the YouTube app despite buffering the video properly, still plays back the video a bit stuttery. I'm running the KitKat OS on it as well. The same videos play fine using the browser but the quality isn't as good (pixelization), despite it being HQ. They also play fine using Freedi YT player at the same quality as the app.
I thought I was the only one until I saw this thread! Pretty sloppy work from Google.

It's running great for me. I have ART enabled, give that a try and see it the problem persists.

Mmm I tried that too but it's still the same. Looking around a bit more people seem to have had issues with some versions of the YouTube app doing this in the past. What version do you have may I ask??

Are other video players effected as well?

Same problem here
Just finished updating to 4.4 Kit Kat. Fired up YouTube and noticed jittery/frames issue before seeing this thread. It's not a huge problem but it's definitely not as smooth prior to update. Warning for heavy youtube users maybe wait out on updating? It's only a little annoying short second jitters here and there.
My youtube is up to date with latest version installed. Lets hope youtube releases an update for Kit Kat OS.
My overall first impressions with Kit Kat so far is that it does feel snappier with the app drawer scrolling, multi-task switcher and touchscreen responsiveness. I'm a heavy Clash Of Clans player so I instantly knew and feel the difference right away.
I have an Ipad Air, Ipad mini (1st gen) and this nexus 7. I'm very happy with the touchscreen pinch to zoom improvement in this update. The screen definitely feels close to par with the ipad screens now. Not a fan boy or anything because I enjoy both iOS and Android!

If you're lucky enough not to be having any issues, can you post the following information so I can see if I can find the root cause of the 'problem'?
1) How you upgraded to 4.4 (OTA, sideload, custom build of official 4.4. ROM, etc)
2) If you factory reset/wiped at any stage
3) Version of YouTube app
4) Link to an HD YouTube video that you can play without any stutter (it may be I/we are just choosing 'bad' videos)
Thanks very much to anyone that can help with this!

Hello,
same problem here, waiting for a fix, don't want to reset my device.

Mine is fine.

I have no stuttering whatsoever.

Yes that's fine, I live in Holland so even the mediocre connection I have is 60mbps Down / 6mbps Up - it's not a buffering type of stutter but more of an issue with the decoding and rendering of the video. Like a driver is not optimised correctly or there is a memory bottleneck.

Thanks for the info, will check it out when I'm home. I was going to wipe and flash that ROM anyway, so I'll check that specific video and see what the results are like. I appreciate the response, now I have something to work with as a base! :good:

Sorry for the question, but english it´s not my mother tongue(from Spain). When you say sttuter, you mean in image & sound, image only or sound only?
I have a N7 2013 with 4.4 and want to test this.
Thank you very much. Regards.

My fault, I should have said! It is actually just the video that stutters for me. The audio plays perfectly. It just jitters slightly with the video, like it 'sticks' briefly especially during panning shots.

Poor quality video with Flash since the update 3.1

Do or problem as well ?
Some streaming site worked well with 3.0.1
...and now the video is degraded with 3.1
I got same problem. Now flash movie on web site not run smooth as 3.01.
my personal experience is the opposite, like no question here at all, on 3.0.1 i would get stutters and laggy playback, and since the 3.1 update i have seen literally no lag or stuttering playing back 720p on imbedded video playback, youtube, anything. i keep seeing all these issue posts and threads about the 3.1 update but i am personally not experiencing any of them, my browser is an snappy as my ipad's browser, games/video playback anywhere (any quality) is perfect, navigation of any part of the os is snappier than before, battery life is exactly the same, i am happy with everything, i just want to be able to root 3.1 without adb and ill be 100% happy..

u can play 720p with no lag or skipping in youtube from browser? anyway u can take a video of that and post, would be helpfull. did u factory reset?
Why are you watching youtube using flash when we have an app that lets us view the video using hardware acceleration?
flash seems to have improved for me
My Flash has gotten so much worse in both the stock Browser and Dolphin that I have gone back to using my ipad1 whenever I want to access a site that has an ios version. It's strange that the degradation is only when you use the browser, not an app.

i did not factory reset, but i havent ever rooted because i wanted the 3.1 update from asus and i read about some disadvantages in primordial, but i really didnt do anything special, just the official update, and i definately meant youtube specifically from the youtube app itself, but from the browser streaming and playing 720p from imbedded videos and/or other means than youtube hasnt lagged on me either (yet** i dont have the invincible tf), the one video "provider" that just plain doesnt work is vimeo for me, i think its a flash 10.3 issue or something because when hitting play the box goes black and never plays. i was just relaying my experience, i think after an update or 2 honeycomb is really going to make apple nervous though
I can't watch ESPN videos anymore. Does anyone know why? I think it was a result of Flash 10.2 and not Honeycomb 3.1. I've done some searches, but I haven't found anything really for the transformer.
Does anyone else have this problem? It just shows up as a picture and never plays video.

you do not know that the net uses a lot of flash video with the same cuts completely different? Flash knows how to manage everything by cons if the hardware part is not done properly, Flash is degraded.
This is Flash movie with 3.0.1 and after ! 3.1
If you understand what I see.
Yes youtube work fine, but not all websites.
can you post a link to that video so we can try the same one please
no, it's a subscription service
Mine was choppy before on 3.01 and still is on 3.1, no change it seems, sux
the above pictures highlight the problem perfectly, i have a second batch transformer and upgraded after first boot to 3.1 i was also thinking steve jobs was right re flash my ipad1 pisses all over my transformer, in every video test ive done, granted its rooted\jailbroken but at this moment apart from the dull UI the only thing it cant do is read anything over a 1 gig usb stick or sd card for movies. I now find it incredible how slick the ipad is with only 256mb ram. Even google are working away from flash. Still loving my transformer, but so wanted it to be everything my desire hd is compared to the iphone 4. I have even found my self going back to my ipad for invoicing and word processing, pages and numbers are slick. Come on google, this thing has loads of horse power and is running like a vw beatle.

Hello,
Following the problems encountered, I wrote the team has adobe flash. After several exchanges of mail, they understood the problem. The person I spoke with said he passed the baton to the service of development, and they would arrange to get a tablet asus to see what happens.
Hi,
That's very helpful, thanks for the information. It's definitely something we want to look into.

Netflix on Galaxy Tab 10.1

I tried to search but found no recent threads on this.
Has anyone else found that Netflix video and audio go out of sync pretty regularly??? I find that the video stutters for a second, and the audio is then out of sync. The video speeds up and catches up with the audio a short time later, then shortly later the problem happens again.
I have netflix on my tablet o.o and it works great. No out of sync audio with video or any problems

I've read about it on another site but not experienced it myself. Are you on the most up to date version of Netflix?

I'm pretty sure its gotta be your internet speeds bro.
I meant to add in my original post that it definitely wasn't my bandwidth.
Any other ideas on a stock 10.1???
The last version of Netflix was horrible like that for me, but the current is perfect. You probably already did this, but uninstall and re-install? Hope it works for you.
The current version of Netflix works great for me. I'm on Task's latest rom.

I am using Overcome's ROM at the moment.
I posted earlier that I had not had the same problem but last night I was watching Top Gear on Netflix and experienced some pretty bad stuttering, but when I played the same show today it was fine.
Sometimes when I start Netflix its out of sync and/or stuttery. Usually I just reboot the tab and then it works fine.
I have the same issue.. My audio/video will get out of sync. I have a T-Mobile galaxy tab 10.1 with stock everything without a root.
I was having this same issue wile watching some videos with my kids today. I usualy fixed its self but it was very annoying. I was on stock 3.2 at the time, latest version of netflix and my intenet is prety darn fast.
I'm running Task's 7.0 rom at the moment. I'll have to test and see if it makes a difference.

Flash Performance on Nexus 7

Hi. I am looking for an Android tablet for my wife so that she can watch Flash content on the go. We went to the local Best Buy to check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer, and the Kindle Fire. I was able to load up the website on each device and my wife found that the videos that she wanted to watch worked best on the Kindle while the other two had choppy playback. It made me wonder if the Silk browser had something to do with performance.
Since it seems that the release date for the Kindle Fire 2 is later than previously thought, I had some questions since I wish to purchase the device before we go on vacation. I am wondering if the Kindle Fire 2 will support Flash through its Silk browser (given that Adobe has given up on mobile support). Does the Nexus 7 with sideloaded Flash and Firefox Beta perform well and how does it compare to the current Kindle Fire using Silk? Does the website matter for performance?
The site in question is a Korean video site (for soaps) which sometimes redirects to another site and sometimes to Youtube. Since I can't read the website, I can only rely on my wife to choose her videos. We have already tried out the iPad with Photon, but the video was too choppy for her.
For the timing of purchase, I also wonder if the August 15th date for Adobe Flash availability will make a difference.
Thanks for your thoughts

With sideloaded Flash and the latest Aurora browser http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/aurora/ I can watch 720p t.v shows on BBC iPlayer with no hiccups, flash performance is excellent. The website will matter for the speed from which you download the flash content but will not affect the actual performance of the flash plug-in (this is browser dependent for the most part).
Go for the Nexus 7, but remember Adobe is pulling mobile flash support for all devices, to get flash running on anything in the future you're gonna have to sideload and use a different browser than Chrome for Android no matter which device. Obviously I don't know for certain but I would think the Kindle Fire 2's default browser would adhere to these guidelines and be lacking flash support––but I may be wrong of course.

I play the kongregate game, Tyrant. It lags really bad. In the tablets' defense, my PC does not fair much better. I only used xscope browser, maybe others fair better.
Flash is unsupported by adobe. Not Google.
I am not saying its google fault that there is no flash. But I am saying the device is way too basic. This technology looks like 3 years old.

I'm guessing that you are referring to the Nexus 7. The person whom you quoted didn't seem to think there was any lag. If you are returning the Nexus, what didn't you like? Which tablet are you going to replace it with? Which one would you suggest for Flash content?

I read a few threads in regards to Flash support for the Kindle Fire. It seems that the Silk browser has Flash support built in. The user has the option to turn on or turn off this feature. As expected, having this feature does slow web browsing. I'm wondering if Amazon's servers have any effect on video streaming of Flash content. All the tablets I mentioned above could run Youtube (from the browser) when Flash was installed. But only the Kindle Fire could smoothly play the video my wife wanted. Odd, considering that the Kindle Fire's specs are below the newer devices.
If you can link me directly to any videos, then I'd be glad to try them out for you. I just tried 1080p videos from YouTube and it played them without a hitch. I don't think that I've encountered any problems with flash video yet.

Thanks. I'm afraid that I don't understand the video, but one can tell if the video is choppy. We currently have DSL 3 Mbps speeds, but when we travel, I'll probably have 1.5 Mbps using DataJack (which uses the Sprint network).

The original link is through a Chinese website which my wife can't read. She uses netsko.com to help her sort through the videos. The link above is one of many links to various Korean soaps.
Thanks again for the help.
The playback was completely smooth but it seems like the audio is delayed by half a second or so. You'll have to let me know if this audio delay is inherent to the video (or is the audio dubbed and I can't tell?).

My wife states that both videos on our laptop are synchronized. Did you try it at full screen or directly from the webpage? Is there a difference? What is your internet speed or does that not make much of a difference? How did you set up your Nexus 7 with Flash (browser, sideloading, etc)? Do you have any tweaks to make your Nexus go faster?
Sorry for so many questions. Thanks again.

I've tried both and there's no difference. My internet connection is plenty fast, but even if it wasn't, it wouldn't affect the sync (it would just take longer for it to load). It shouldn't be a performance issue because the video and audio are both playing at full speed without any drops. It must be some kind of software issue, like maybe the video wrapper used by the website isn't fully compliant in some way (pure speculation on my part). As I mentioned earlier, 1080p video from YouTube worked just fine. This audio delay was present in both Dolphin Browser and the AOSP browser.
As far as my setup goes, I'm running SGT7 build 3 with motley kernel 1.0.12, and I restored Flash and Dolphin Browser from Titanium Backups. I've overclocked my cpu to 1.624ghz and my gpu is overclocked to 520mhz.
The nexus 7 performs flash well, but not excellent. for some reason, all flash content is displayed at what appears to be 320x240 from what i see. ex

I hadn't tried Firefox beta until now, and it's definitely not playing flash correctly. Even when I set the YouTube video to 1080p, it still looks all pixilated. You should try Dolphin or the AOSP browser.

Are you using a Nexus 7? It sounds like you have rooted your device. Since I don't intend to root the device, how does stock Nexus 7 play with Flash? If you have a Nexus 7, is there a way for you to bring down your clock speeds to factory settings and play the videos again? Does rooting the device alter the playback performance?
Edit: I just chuckled to myself realizing the forum in which I post. I guess I would be hard pressed to find someone here who hasn't modded their device.

Are you locked to 320x240? That would kind of blow in terms of quality. I'm guessing that since Adobe is giving up, they weren't trying hard to work with any video processor. Have you tried the other browser suggested? Is your Nexus set at factory settings?
Flash Performance on anything is rubbish, it always was and it always will be.
Side-loading flash onto my Nexus 7 and using the Firefox Beta, it works great for me, but I don't use it I purely installed it because my dad was curious as to whether he could play *shudder* cafe world on facebook, which I figured would probably suck, and it did, but that game sucks on my gaming rig PC so it was not really a surprise.

I do think they had some manufacturing bugs to work out as I'm about to return mine for a screen flickering issue, but just it terms of raw spec's, a quad core cpu with additional low power idle CPU and a 12 core gpu in a high res (1280x800) 7" capacitive touch tablet with 10+ hours of constant use battery life, NFC, bluetooth 3.0, 12.5 days of standby is all amazingly new... for $199? (okay well $318 by the time it gets here in Australia with 16gb of storage on it, but still)

Of course I'm using a Nexus 7, haha. Yes, it's definitely rooted, and I can't comment about stock performance because I rooted and flashed a custom ROM immediately. I just set my cpu to stock (1.3ghz) and it still played the same. I can't change the gpu speed without flashing a new kernel, but I believe that flash is cpu-limited anyway (which is why they're moving away from flash) so it probably shouldn't really matter. Rooting in and of itself has no effect on performance, but it will allow you to do things that can affect performance, like flash custom ROMs and kernels, overclock, etc.

Stuttering in Youtube?

I'm watching a video side by side with my Note 2 and it looks like the Note 3 stutters when playing back the same video. Nothing crazy but it's there. I mean there's stuttering in the browser. Now there's stuttering in Youtube. Videos my freaking 3 year old hacked touch pad can play smoothly. What the hell is going on here?
I can't be the only one experiencing this. I'm starting to regret upgrading to the Note 3. My only hope is a custom rom comes along and solves all this crap.
No issues with me, and I watch two videos at a time. I'm using a T-Mobile n3.

The same thing is happening to me but only when watching the Hulu plus app. I switch it to med quality, everything plays smooth. But only in High quality its unwatchable. It might be the app itself.

I too am having these issues. Minor stuttering on Youtube App and Hulu Plus app on high settings Major Stuttering. I guess I'm trying to determine if this is a software/app issue or a hardware issue. I also tried a Movie Trailers app with HD Trailers. I think it was called Cine Movie Trailers, and it had minor stuttering like the youtube app. If someone can try these apps specially the Hulu Plus app which seems to have the biggest problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Wan to make sure before I request an exchange.
Thanks!
It could be smart pause, try disabling it.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately smart pause setting is off. Seems to be something else. Anybody can check if they have this problem in hulu plus high setting?
Thanks

Dont bother with an exchange. It has to be a software issue because our devices are more than capable of playing videos. Besides im on my second exchange and the same stuttering happens in both apps

I have this issue on my tmobile Note 3. I first noticed it in the Hulu Plus app whenever I set the quality to high. Second time I noticed it was streaming video through video players such as mx video and the stock video player. This would happen with standard avi videos as well as 720, 1080 videos. Haven't tested youtube though.
Hello everyone!
Update: So I went to my local AT&T store to check these issues on the demo unit and installed the Hulu Plus app and the playback is exactly the same that we're experiencing. On the YouTube app though, the playback was smooth as butter and what I noticed was the YouTube app on the demo unit had the old YouTube logo on it's icon. So when I got home I uninstalled the youtube app updates and returned it to it's factory installed state. That resolved the YouTube problem!!
As for the Hulu Plus app, I contacted Hulu and went through their troubleshooting steps with no success and then answered some questions about my device. The representative then stated that the data was passed on to their mobile developers. So I'll keep anyone updated if that yields some results. If you're having these issues with Hulu Plus, I encourage you to notify it to hulu customer support on their web page. They gave me a 2 week credit on my subscription for my inconvenience.
Hope this gets resolved soon.

Thanks. The hulu plus app is definitely jacked. What i find interesting is the adds usually play right, but when it gets to the actual show, it stutters.

Yeah, I found that odd also. But I think the ads play at a lower picture quality. That's what I think anyways. I'm not sure what's happening there
Hi everyone,
Just to let you guys know that Hulu sent me an email saying that they "put a fix in place on their side of things" and instructed me to shut down my device for 60 seconds and turn it on and play a video. So I did and videos seem to be playing smooth. No more stuttering! The app seems to have lost the option to choose video quality instead it chooses it automatically depending on your connection speed. Video quality is very good though!

I, too, have this problem. Thought I was going crazy at first because it was so slight I'm on non rooted stock rom but has Apex launcher installed. I recall Youtube videos playing fluenty at some point before installing Apex. No+ saying Apex is the culprit here. But that is my "fixpoint"

So have you tried to uninstall Apex to see if the stuttering in YouTube went away? I have Nova installed and can't remember if I tried the youtube app while I still had Touchwiz on because I installed Nova almost right away.
I'm going to try this tomorrow I guess just to say I tried it because you never know. Though I doubt it because I also have stuttering in scrolling on almost any browser and that I definitely checked while I was still fully stock, no Nova and no root.

Kit Kat 4.4 User Veiws

Hi
Before I take the plunge along with many others
Can anybody who has updated to 4.4 with the official LG update give there view on Pros and cons of the update
A reading a few its not much faster and no extras !
eg) Faster ? Dim Screen Problem ? Extra Apps?
I like
Generally I think it is a bit smoother and generally everything is running better for me some apps like mxplayer no like kitkat but the stock is fine until they update. Do not update if you want to be able to switch between roms, tried to reinstall cwm/twrp and for me gets stuck in fastboot so you will need to be patient till they find a new exploit. New keyboard in black is pretty awesome and transparent bars definitly refine the look as well as the white notification icons. Couple new lg apps like On screen phone so can control on pc and copy files etc pretty cool but I think its novelty value.

If you are not intending on going aosp it is definitely worth the upgrade as you should see apps running better because of the way kitkat uses the ram, I have to say even though not a huge difference in UI it definitely is better optimized and using less ram for the system. Definitely if you can get 4.4.2 do it, if you choose to stay lg stock I would suggest you install xposed framework and change it how you want to be :victory:

I'm using MXPlayer on Mahdi-rom with Kitkat and I haven't seen any problems. What are the problems you're talking about?

on the stock 4.4.2 have some issues with playback. Video quality seems a bit more choppy, and the colour/contrast seems off vs the stock player. I have heard other people have couple problems but can't say for all. Maybe it is using wrong codec but I just using the automatic setup...

I've read some accounts that MXPlayer had some Kitkat problems a few months ago, but they were supposed to have been fixed back in December. I'm not seeing problems at all. You might want to try re-installing MXPlayer to see if that fixes it for you.

I switched to BS Player Free as my standard video player as I have long felt it to be the better choice.
Lastpass!
Lastpass Premium users will love the upgrade. The Lastpass app can natively fill in usernames and passwords on websites in Chrome, without having to activate the Lastpass input method. It just detects the login page, pops up a prompt, and you hit yes to log in. Fantastic.
Aside from that, it seems smoother. When you swipe down the notification menu, the settings button is in the corner where it should be, so that's nice. Oh, and the LG keyboard (which I love to bits) now has a bunch of themes. There's a chance that I just didn't notice them before the update.
Basically, I've had no problems at all, and a bunch of apps are now able to make use of Kitkat features. It's not so much "why would I upgrade?" as "why on Earth wouldn't I upgrade?"

I like bsplayer but the ac3 issue the player during the codec dispute leans me toward the stock player. I use bsplayer as my backup player for troubled files.
One issue I've run into with 4.4 build 20a are phantom screen presses when turning on the screen again after not using the g pad for a bit. I usually just urn off the screen for 5 seconds and then turn it back off and everything is working again. I should add I did a dirty install over 4.2.2 to 4.4.2, so chances are a wipe of the data would fix it. I'm going to do the 2 cache wipes and see if I get the problem again. I'm posting this here to see if anyone else has the problem.

When I had my G2 KK made knock on much more responsive. So far, for me, KK has made no difference on my G-Pad.

Was it really broken to begin with? I found that once you got used to knocking at the right place with the right force applied, it works almost all the time. The KK update seems not to change much, if anything about this.
Now, for some reason KK has been causing the stock video player to skip and hold frames much more than usual. I use it to play videos out via slimport a lot, and after the update a simple .mp4 was skipping forward several seconds on video, until the audio caught up. Must be some sort of memory leak, but any thoughts on what can be done? Is it possible to de-install and then reinstall the stock player without factory reset?
MX Player was my go-to before and it still works. I'd switched to the stock because I don't like the ads in the free version of MX, but danged if it isn't one of the best stock players around.
Mark
Maybe because I had the G2 to compare it against, but after KK my G2 would immediately turn on first time nearly every time. My GPad still takes 3-5 tries even after KK.
The way I solved the issue with knock on/off is I knock three times instead of two.
Can't copy files to SD card since upgrading to 4.4.2.

For me, 4.4.2 seems a little smoother and faster. I was using Nova Launcher because the LG launcher seemed a bit less fluid. It is much better now. Nova is still smoother doing some things but not enough for me to feel I have to keep using it. I have gone back to using the stock launcher.
Other than that, not a big deal although I didn't expect it to be. It is not a huge Android update update. 4.4 is mostly just smoother.

I agree everything seems smoother and faster, web browsing is definitely faster, I don't notice any real difference with the screen brightness but I never really had a problem with my screen. For my use not much of a difference from 4.2.2 but overall I am happy with the improvements Kit Kat adds to the GPad.
