I have a great idea for a replacement launcher, but I have no previous coding experience. How difficult would it be for a first time coder to build a launcher?
And if it's going to be ridiculously hard to do, and you'd like to hear the idea, feel free to message me, you may be able to help!
There is an example launcher from old android versions in the SDK.
You could start by taking a look at that.
if you have no coding experience, it's going to be very hard
I've done a year and a half of a software engineering degree and I'm currently working on the android development team at Broadcom as a coop work term. I probably wouldn't want to start trying to write a launcher(unless it was just a few modifications on the stock launcher) so I couldn't even imagine trying to do it without any coding experience. I'm not trying to say that I'm a master programmer (very far from it) but I certainly have more than zero experience.
I've looked at it myself and it seems rather difficult, however, perhaps there's a tutorial or guide somewhere that might help out?

You never know how hard it is unless you try.
Take a look at the SDK examples, there is a basic launcher.
Hi all,
Personally I still love my G1. It is the 1st Android phone so historically something that is interesting on its own.
I assume most of the G1 owners on this forum are having the same geekish interests as me and I was wondering what you are doing with the device that you concider 'cool' and can impress fellow geeks
Some things I think are impressive:
1. Having a rooted device with a custom very stable and fast Gingerbread firmware (ezgingerbread)
2. The droid2600 and Frodo C64 emulators that run great on the G1 with its keyboard.
3. Haven't done this myself yet, but seeing videos of debian run on the G1 was pretty impressive.
4. Eventhough it is probably not ready for daily use but having ICS on the G1 is amazing.
My G1 is running debian for a while now. But it mostly sits in drawer now, I just bring myself to sell it. No matter how much my wife nags at me.

How well does it run? I guess you can't use it as a phone if you started debian?
I am using Frayo
And I use it mainly for forums and IRC and stuff

Running a customized rom you created yourself does belong in the 'wish I could say that' category.
Compiling programs from source does seem to be possible for the lesser educated with the scriptset smitna has created. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444792
Not as cool as creating your own rom, but you have to start somewhere
I been using it mainly to try roms and stuff,
but every time a friend lost or have no phone, until they get a proper.
I give it to them to use it
and to try to convert them to android
so I use it for educational porposes
Im using frayo too (thanks )

What do you mean?
I am really honestly using Frayo....
Froyobylaszlo is /the/ best G1 ROM and I use my mod for the (few) features it adds
Did I say I used that script?
Well...no, I didn't
And I can compile a ROM on my own from source thank you very much.
I just don't really see the need anymore since froyobylaszlo is as good as it gets
And instead of working my way up from aosp, learning along the way since I don't know a lot, I decided to just mod in features I like
And no I didn't use some scripts or rom kitchen
I tried using an apk compiler and a theme kitchen thing to fix certain problems, but then I decided against it...
Also, as of now I'm stopping working on my ROM and MOD and am gonna go for some pure PC development to work on my skills
I'm not too sure what you were trying to say but that's my response
If I misunderstood you, sorry
Edit: I think I did....now I'm debating wheter I should delete the above....
Sorry
Just ignore it all...I though you were saying that I shouldn't advertise here (I'm not btw I'm actually using it to post even)
And I thought you said I used that script and didn't do anything
Well, if you want to jumpstart into rom development with modding,, just open up the rom with winrar/7zip and start looking around
And at the google source website you can find how to compile a rom
The second option may require some programming skills

Nice ideas. Might do some research, thx!
Was indeed giving you a compliment for your rom modding, maybe my indirect approach was not clear enough (I am not a native English speaker... that probably doesn't help as well)

Oh ok thanks
Sorry bout that...http://forums.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
This is very useful
Go to "building a rom"
Idk if the link works, its been strange for me, so just scroll down to it
Whenever you edit a rom, you have to sign it...
That link has the files and directions
Also,
I've just had fun experimenting with my G1. I didn't root it myself, but I have learned a lot since I got it. I ran through about 10 or 15 different roms until I found one that I like personally (Ginger yoshi) and customized it the way I wanted. I think the coolest thing that I did on it running a SNES emulator (although I only did it once because of ridiculous lag). I started toying around with DOS box but that didn't go anywhere. I wasn't able to do much with it because it is my primary phone and it got extremely annoying to have to fix it every time I messed something up.
Anyway, it was tons of fun... then it broke :'( And now I'm getting my friend to give me his for free! and the fun will continue.
Hey all,
I extracted the img file from the dev preview of 'L' from the Hamerhead version.
I'm new at this and it's really cool to explore and see how these things are built. Can I just pull the framework from 4.4.4 and throw it into the img and flash that?
What would it take to be able to flash this? I'm sure I can't, but maybe someone could enlighten me on what goes into this as I'm really interested in learning.
Thanks in advance!

Well, there are some guides for porting on XDA. However, since the Android L Source code isn't released yet, you cannot build it from source. So you would need to base it on a Kitkat rom. But since the radio, bootloader and apps from Android L require android L, you cannot just do that.
So a port would need to change drivers, frameworks and some other stuff I don't understand . However, some guys already started porting Android L to the Nexus 4, and , no offence, I think they are done much quicker as you (or me). So take a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/android-5-0-discussions-rumors-t2780976/post53701458

There's a reason I don't really post/go on xda anymore. It's all a bunch of crying flamers who constantly ask for updates and complain when **** doesn't work.
That and the fact that I have a nexus so i'm not flashing roms every week lol

I'm on here a lot more than usual. I'm between jobs now and at home. Will be changing next week though. One of my biggest pet peeves is those who won't take the time to research stuff before asking/demanding help. Answer is in the OP, but they don't bother to read it. Burns my hide as they say. ?

How different do you think Lolipop will be to build for vs Kitkat. I know Lolipop has alot of security.

I usually just port Custom Rom's to devices. Not really port I guess, just have to change the device tree. Do a little bit of kernel stuff to.
I don't consider myself a dev, but I will be getting one of these, once the "Sand" version is available.
I am wondering how much more difficult everything is going to be between Lollipop/SELinux and 64-bit capability.
This will be my first Nexus device as well - closest I've had up to now is running GPE on my M8.

Development seems to be either dead or slow moving for this device... I have many years experience in the Android world and would like to offer my assistance. While I am unable to compile my own software/ROMs, I am very well versed with fixing issues and bug finding. Let me help you test? I'm not afraid to brick my device (tho I would like to avoid that if possible). Testing results turnaround time in the past has been within 24 hours or less. I use my phone daily for work and personal use so I'm consistently on it. Let's get this ball rolling! How can I help you?!

lol you're right, sir. sorry for posting non-sense in this thread.
I m really looking forward to seeing lg g5 developing community grow

Im glad someone got a thread going on this. I would just like someone to compile a kernel with overclock and screen mod. I have a powerful enough machine to run vmware as a buildbox and can run linux command but need someone with experience to simplify the process a bit.
Same. I'm relatively comfortable with linux and can have VM sandboxes running to test myself if I can get a G5 image to run in a VM.
Does anyone have the unlock.bin file that LG has given to the unlocked variants? I'd like to look through it.

I think really exciting times are coming our G5's way. This phone has great potential but it's so underrated. I had the op3 but G5 is much better.
We have resurrection remix, cm13, cm14 on the way, aicp, amazing fluence patch, genisys Rom and patch etc. I can see some more great development in the future
