[Q] Unmodified Nexus 4- boot loop? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am writing this on behalf of my mother's phone. She has a completely stock Nexus 4 on Net10.
This phone hasn't been touched by a computer. Any development settings are also disabled.
I came home from work and my mom showed me that her phone wouldn't boot. It was boot looping on the "X" boot animation.
So I went ahead and accessed the boot menu and selected recovery and did a cache wipe. No help. I let the phone run out of battery and charged it back up, no help.
I have no clue what happened. The phone was working fine previously. Again, the phone has NOT been unlocked, rooted, etc. Completely stock Nexus 4.
I would like to fix her phone but I would also like to keep her data intact. She even told me it is very important to "keep everything on the phone".
Any assistance would be great.

Try the following:
- wipe cache and dalvik cache
- Flash a custom kernel
- See if boots
- Make a complete UROOTED backup and save it in the computer
- Flash factory image and relock bootloader
- Restore backup
Tell us if worked

By flashing a custom kernel it is required to unlock the bootloader which will wipe the entire phone.
Your only hope is to use stock recovery to install a signed OTA package (if it's on 4.3 wait for 4.4 ota package).

[Q] Rooted Nexus 4 refuses to encrypt. Resets itself.

I cannot use the default "Encrypt Phone" option on the settings menu of my Nexus 4. When used, it just reboots the phone and I have done this process over 5 times with no success.
I used the Android Nexus 4 ToolKitv2.0.0 and the recommended root tools and am running obviously 4.2.2.
Any reason why it's doing this? Thanks.

Are you using a custom recovery - TWRP or CWM? You need to be using the stock recovery image to encrypt your phone. The nexus toolkit will allow you to re-flash the stock recovery.
One the stock recovery has been re-flashed, you should be able to encrypt your phone. I had to re-flash stock recovery, reboot the phone, then reflash the stock recovery again.
Once the device has been successfully encrypted using the stock recovery, you can re-flash either the TWRP or CWM as your recovery. TWRP supports reading data from encrypted devices, so it is probably the way to go (not sure if CWM dows now, but it didn't last time I looked).
Does encrypting the phone make a dramatic difference in speed (as in slow down) for the phone or does it mainly affect boot times?
Thanks for the tip about having stock recovery as I also wanted to encrypt phone as well. Would one have to de-encrypt phone then install custom recovery to update a custom Rom (I'm running paranoid android) then flash to stock recovery to encrypt phone again- seems long winded :-\
Just from reading the above post once flashed to stock recovery and then encrypted device, it's okay to flash back to TWRP and still have an encrypted device?
Is there another way to do this when running a custom rom?

I haven't noticed a difference in speed, however technically there will be a little bit of a slowdown.
I'm running stock Android, so I don't know how well it plays with custom ROMs, but you can re-flash a TWRP recovery after encrypting your phone with stock Android on it.
If the custom ROM installation wipes the data partition, it would remove the encryption.
I've tried flashing stock recovery using Nexus 4 Toolkit and recovery is back to stock. However the phone is still just rebooting when I press encrypt device. What am I doing wrong?
For some reason I had to reflash the stock recovery, reboot, then reflash the stock recovery again. No idea why, but it worked for me!

Booted back into stock recovery device is still rebooting itself after hitting the encrypt button, Encryption did not happen.
Found the problem but I can't seem to fix it. Flashing the stock recovery doesn't seem to actually do it. When I boot to recovery when flashed to stock, it just shows the android mascot with an open chest and a warning symbol. Have reflashed many times over 5, and still doesn't work. It seems like I need the actual image recovery file. something like Recovery.img?

The android with a warning symbol is the normal symbol of stock recovery.
However, I wonder, if you could solve the problem? My nexus doesn't want to encrypt itself too. Flashed stock recovery already twice and it just keeps rebooting when I start the encryption process.
Quick update: After trying it several times in a row it finally worked (after the fourth time or so). I have no clue why it didn't work before as I haven't change anything.

Thanks for your perseverance! I spent half a day trying to encrypt my rooted Galaxy S4 with the similar problem as you:
I go into System Settings, click "Encrypt Phone", then I get the green android and the phone just reboots itself as normal.
What worked for me: AIRPLANE MODE.
I was rebooting it time after time with no effect (following your suggestion). Once I turned on the Airplane Mode, the encryption started working.
My Current Setup:
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition (GT-I9505g) rooted via CF auto root. + Full disk encryption!
Works perfectly!
Now I can have different passwords for disk encryption (long strong password) and for locker screen (simple)

Old thread, same issue, HTC One w/ OmniROM (m7att). My Nexus 10 did it as well.
The person saying to reflash stock? DOn't listen to that. Doesn't need to be done. Encrypted all my devices w/ TWRP installed.
Airplane mode DID work, though.
I just had this issue with my N4, too. I read on the Google Product Forum that this was because a process prevents from unmounting the /data partition. ("Nexus 5 is not going through encryption process" - can't post link due to being new)
With that in mind, I rebooted into safe mode and then tried again and it worked on the first try (At least it started the encryption process, it's at 10% now)
I had this problem for a looooong time. Thankfully, I seem to have discovered a solution for those still encountering this issue.
Turn off SuperSU (Settings -> More -> Application manager -> All -> SuperSU -> Turn Off)
Reboot into Safe Mode (How to)
Run encryption (Settings -> More -> Security -> Encrypt Device)
Turn on SuperSU after complete (Settings -> More - > Application manager -> Turned Off -> SuperSU -> Turn On)

Where do I go to find how to fix my rooted S5 SMG900P (bricked)

Hi,
I'm new to XDA forums, and this is the first time that have ever tried rooting my phone. I got it in my head that I wanted to root my Samsung Galaxy S5 SW-G900P so that I could add a hot spot mod. I followed a few tutorials which helped me accomplish root. I then added TWRP and that went fine as well. Then I added a WiFi Tethering Mod (unlockHotspot-1.4-NE5-DEODEX.zip) via TWRP. I was asked to wipe Dalvik cache which is where I think the problem started. I think I did something and stopped the delete process. I can't recall. I turned on my phone with anticipation of being able to use Hotspot. The phone started to boot as normal; the Samsung logo with lines moving around it showed; the yellow 4g 3d animated graphics showed; then the main 4g graphic showed and stayed on my screen which is where it stayed and nothing after that. Just the 4g logo. So, I pulled the battery and started my phone in recovery mode which took me directly into the TWRP interface. I figured that I needed to reload the 6gig backup file that I created (through TWRP) in order to bring my phone back to life. I believe that I was given options to install the recovery file which (I don't remember them all) already had a few check marks added to the options. However, there were other options such as the System and Recovery boxes that were not checked, so I checked those boxes as well. I reinstalled from the recovery backup file and everything seemed to work fine until TWRP rebooted the phone and now I am stuck going through the recovery booting process again. Every time I turn on the phone, I get to the teamwin screen which blinks and blinks. Did I brick or soft-brick my phone? I'm newb to this and need a little help to get my phone working again. Also, am I in the right part of the XDA forum to ask questions? Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.
@Uclid
Soft brick.
Go to sammobile, find your stock firmware, uzip it, flash with Odin in download mode and your phone will wake up from her sleep

Thank you, thank you! I really appreciate the reply. I downloaded the firmware this morning and just loaded it to my phone. All good now. Now, to get that hotspot mod to work.
Good to see you got your phone back up and running......but if you flashed the firmware with odin, you will have lost root and overwritten TWRP.......
You'll need both back before you can flash that zip......

Massive softbrick (haven't found a solution yet)

Hello everyone,
So here's my story: I got a 6P short after release and it's been amazing. After switching from a S6 I couldn't be happier until 3 days ago.
I was playing around with my phone (checking for updates on the play store if I recall correctly) and I was going to switch from 4g to wifi. I went ahead and pulled down my notification shade and went to press WiFi but misclicked and hit Hotspot which was below it. My phone suddenly froze big time and this is for the first time ever since purchase.
At first I thought I'd wait it out since the device was completely unresponsive, home button didn't work and neither did anything on screen. Buttons didn't make a difference either. 10 minutes went by and I ended up force restarting by holding down power + volume up. First part of my bootup went fine but when it got to the android boot animation after I put in my pin to allow the device to start it dropped from the smooth usual framerate down to 1 frame every 10-15 seconds and it slowed down further until it came to a complete halt around the time the android letters appear.
My first thought was corrupt rom so I went ahead and wiped data from the stock recovery. I was running completely stock with no modifications whatsoever. That didn't do anything. Phone still froze in the same boot phase. Desperate I unlocked bootloader to flash a clean fresh image to try to fix it and to my surprise that didn't change a thing.
As I was getting pretty desperate already I had one more idea and that was to flash up to the Dev preview. To my huge surprise it booted and I jumped from excitement. So I started setting up my phone again. I got past the prompt to insert sim card and I was now at the screen to choose a wifi network. As soon as I clicked into that the phone froze up again and at that point I lost all hope.
I wiped data in stock recovery and shut the phone down for the night. On day 3, today I woke up and tried starting the phone and it worked as if nothing had happened. I went through the setup and set up my phone on the N preview. At a certain point I was planning to go back to the latest official build but for now I was happy my phone was back from the dead. Later today I tried to restart my phone to clear all running apps etc and it froze up on boot.
I'm losing all hope that I'll be resolving this myself so I'm reaching out to the community to see if anyone's had this happen to them before and hopefuly for a solution. It's still under warranty so I can eventually send it back to the retailer but I'd rather not have a phone for 3 weeks.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thank you for reading through my long and probably pretty boring story!
Have you tried flashing the factory image? If yes, did you made sure to wipe/erase the system, boot, vendor, and cache partition before flash the corresponding img files?
To the OP, is there any reason you did not flash to release version 6 instead of Dev preview ?
Also, any reason you can not simply do the "unenroll" from https://www.google.com/android/beta ?
It will require you to setup certain settings again as you will be back to a "factory reset".

DJBhardwaj, i haven't specifically erased those partitions. I was under the impression wipe userdata along with reflashing did that. I will try that tonight when I get home!
Xdafly, I only updated up to N as a last resort because at first I had a locked BL. I was planning to unenrol but that would've been too late as it self bricked after a restart.

Well I just did the erase thingy and my phone booted but wifi won't turn on. Enabling hotspot doesn't brick anymore but I now suspect WiFi might've been the issue. Any tips on how to find out what it could be and possibly fix it?
Edit: 2 restarts and a factory reset later I'm back to bricked same way as before.
try safe mode

That was my first thought, that was the restart that bricked it again. Safe mode shouldn't have made a difference since I hadn't even logged into Google account for apps.
After reading the very first post; sounds like bad WiFi hardware.
All the hanging has been related to WiFi or Hotspot.
I think you should get a replacement

Is your phone rooted and did you install Xposed?
Over the weekend I shutdown my 6p (stock rooted with April security patch, Xposed v80) and charged it. When it turned it back up I kept getting "Unfortunately, nfc service has stopped". Long story short: I ended up factory reset my phone and reinstalled EVERYTHING and I still got into bootloop. Then I came across
https://github.com/rovo89/Xposed/issues/113
https://github.com/rovo89/android_art/issues/28
At the end of the second post rovo89 (developer of Xposed) fixed the bug in V83. I wiped my 6p once more and installed everything with v83. Problem solved.
Good luck!

Phone restarts at startup.

Well this is my 1st post so first of all hey everyone
I just spent a week in Amsterdam and my phone restarted twice, different times different days and I dont remember what I was doing with it back then.
But as I landed back home I put the phone back from "Airplane Mode" and went on to toggle "Cellular Data" on.
The second I pressed the cellular data shortcut on my the phone restarted itself but this time whenever it would finish the screen would be on but fully black and sometimes it'll show battery precentage at the top but then will restart again in an infinite loop.
Sometimes it'll pop up the "Optimizing Apps" window and will go through all 24, upon finishing it will restart once more and do the same.
I tried using the bootloader and it worked (the bootloader that is) but the phone would do the same thing even after Rebooting from there or shutting down from there and then turning back on.
I contacted tech support on chat but they couldnt help past telling me to go to bootloader and reboot, said I should factory wipe when it failed.
Also tried wiping cache but to no avail.
I have no backup of my phone (wanted to do one before the flight but got lazy and I suck for not doing one sooner) since probably October and google doesnt backup my contacts properly for some unknown reason.
I already downloaded Android Studio with everything included for me to try using adb to sideload stock without wiping but its my first time and I couldnt get it to do anything at all...
I already got the official stock .gz file from the motorola website.
Anyway here are the specs to my phone:
XT1575
Everything is stock. didn't root or change recovery once in my life.
Was fully updated and had plenty of drive space (I have almost 128GB with the 64GB version + 64GB SD)
I'm really lost here so help will be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-Noam
Start with a full wipe and if that doesn't work flash the stock image. Not sure what your question is though as you never really say. Once fixed I would unlock and make a backup so you don't have to deal with this again.

The thing I pretty much want to know is if theres a way to either backup the phone now with it connected to the computer while in bootloader or recovery. or a way to flash the stock rom without wiping which I read someone did with his tablet. I cant post source normally because I'm a new user so here it is but change spaces to dots: schnouki net/posts/2014/08/13/flashing-a-stock-android-image-without-wiping-user-data/
Also while in recovery I noticed 2 options under wipe: 1. userdata only. 2. userdata+(insert something I dont remember here) and I was wondering what gets deleted in both? if I delete only userdata what data will remain? something helpful?
Sure you can try flashing without wiping data but being locked I personally wouldn't risk it. No idea about backing up in your state... somewhere I remember a thread on backing up without root try searching in q&a.

Out of curiosity why shouldnt I try flashing with no wipe if ill lose the data anyway? worst case wont I just have to wipe after it fails and flash again?
And I will try thank you
Do you have any knowledge about the 2 wipe options?
Thanks in advance
Well I tried turning the phone on and it took a couple of minutes before loading to a fresh start. It apparently wiped itself on its own. Managed to restore almost everything.
Anyhow the phone takes too long to boot now. Was even stuck at boot and I had to restart it.
Anyway to fix my software? Or at least check for corruption?

Bootloop: Upgrading Verizon Note 4 from 5.1.1 w/ root to 6.0.1 w/ root

After attempting to upgrade my wife's Verizon Note 4 from 5.1.1 with root to 6.0.1 with root, it is now in a boot loop. I had done my exact phone earlier this month with no issues, so I was confident I could do hers. Now she's pissed because she has no phone and I'm in the dog house. Fortunately, I made a complete backup of her phone using TWRP before attempting this upgrade.
So, can I just restore her backup or are there other steps I need to perform before trying to revert it, since I did flash the N910VVRU2CQL1_PartialFirmware_DevEd.tar and the N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVRU2CPD1_FullFirmware.tar during the process, and also the JasmineROM_v7.0_N910VVRU2CPF3, though it was actually restored via TWRP.
The details are below if it helps determine what might have happened, but if I can just restore her backup, she'll be happy, which means I can finally get out of the dog house.
I tried upgrading my wife's phone since she has the same exact phone running 5.1.1 with root. Everything appeared to be going fine, but after performing the last step (flashing the N910VVRU2CQL1_PartialFirmware_DevEd.tar.md5.7z via Odin) and rebooting the phone, it now goes into a boot loop. It will load the Samsung logo for about 20-30 seconds, then reboot every time. I can still access TWRP from recovery and I have cleared Dalvik and Cache, but it still does the same thing. I also reflashed JasmineROM_v7.0_N910VVRU2CPF3, cleared Dalvik and Cache again, but still the same boot loop. It does still show the word Custom under the Samsung logo at boot, so I assume that is good news. Doesn't that mean the bootloader is still unlocked or something?
If it helps, the part of the process that had me concerned was after unlocking the bootloader. I powered off the phone, and then tried to load the recovery menu so I could factory reset the phone and clear the cache, but the recovery menu never appeared. It did show the Android fix-it guy for the recovery for about 10 seconds then a short progress bar under it for about 5 seconds, then it went straight to the Samsung logo. It never did give me the actual recovery menu, just the Android fix-it guy animation, which I thought was odd because I've always had the recovery menu pop up after that.
Any suggestions?
Mike

Not that I'm impatient, but I thought I had a backup phone I could put my sim card in until I resolve this issue. Only problem is I forgot it was an at&t phone. Duh!
From what I've read the Note 4 n910v is a robust and almost unbrickable phone. So I said what the heck, I'm going to restore my backup. I mean that is why before all instructions it is advised to make a full backup, so you can revert back, right!. I don't recall the instructions claiming there is a special process or order of steps to take before you can restore your backup.
So, I wiped everything and restored my full backup via twrp. Upon reboot, I finally had the "Kernel is not seandroid enforcing" and "Set Warranty Bit: Kernel" that I was accustomed to. I thought this must be a good sign, but then it went to a black screen, which I realized after about 20 mins, that it had powered itself off. So I tried it again and same thing, it doesn't reboot or even vibrate or flash the LED light. I can press the power button and it will come back on, so I know it turns itself off. So what would cause it to power off after displaying the first boot logo titled Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Custom w/ unlocked icon powered by Android?
The next thing I will try, unless hopefully someone advises me otherwise, is reflash the N910VVRU2BPA1_N910VVZW2BPA1_VZW [5.1.1 Stock FW]. I assume that should be safe to do, and I'll just follow the directions for the "Easy Guide for How to Root Verizon Galaxy Note 4 (updated links and instructions)" though technically isn't the bootloader already unlocked since I have the red "Kernel is not seandroid enforcing" and the yellow, "Set Warranty Bit: Kernel" and the custom unlocked lock on my boot screen?
This is where I'm confused, I feel like this is not the issue, that it must be something else, but I'm at a lost.
Finally got my phone working! But no WiFi
I've finally got my phone working again! I just can't get the WiFi to work. I have tried three different modems but still the WiFi will not enable: N910VVRU2BPA1_Modem, N910VVRU2CPD1_Modem, and N910VVRU2CPF3_Modem. I even tried restoring the modem I had backed up, but still no go. I noticed that even when I restored my modem from backup, it still said my baseband was N910VVRU2CQL1, but when I flashed the other modems, they each updated the baseband correctly, displaying the correct baseband version, though still no WiFi.
Any suggestions?
