Mja camera firmware upgrade for aosp? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

There was some mention of improved camera in mja, is this just a new camera apk or has the camera firmware been updated as well? And could this be done if you are on aosp ROM?

The camare firmware has been updated. And what do you mean can it be done if your on an aosp rom

I mean is there any way to the camera firmware update while I'm on aosp rom, or do I have to flash to mja to do camera firmware update

I don't think touchwiz camera is compatible with aosp.

No almost impossible.

So, getting the stock MJA camera and launching it can't update the firmware? Is there a service installed in stock MJA that assists with this process, or what?

Indeed.
The bane of AOSP Roms has long been the lack of fully functional/fully featured Camera/Camcorder apps. The typical reason for this is that the phone manufacturers (Samsung, HTC, LG, whoever) don't release the full software and firmware behind them.
Most of the cameras on modern smartphones are, obviously, specialty parts with custom firmware and software, and in some cases chipsets, supporting them. Not having the full OEM drivers, firmware, and camera software hence means that AOSP developers have to come up with viable working solutions themselves using available drivers and stock apps, which in most cases will mean slightly less functionality or quality.
Hope this helps.

camera jb+ from the playstore works for me, it's fast and simple to use, not a ton of customization but it lets you choose storage location and it comes with it's own gallery. no voice activarion tough but that's okay for me. I like it because is simple.

REQ - New Camera from MF9

I was wondering if someone could upload the new MF9 camera? I'm going to wait until a flash able rom of mf9 comes out, but would love to have the new camera app

Currently there is a flashable stock MF9 rom and a few custom MF9 roms available.
just extracted the camera apk from my mf9 stock. https://copy.com/l1t7wbji0x6J
Just remember the big gain is the camera firmware. I didn't even see a 'new camera' in the update dump but i may have overlooked it. So if you don't notice any difference you can update the firmware. Easy way to tell is upon first use of the camera you will get a message saying updating camera firmware please wait.

As far as I'm aware, the only new feature is HDR video recording.

Touchwiz vs AOSP as they relate to firmware

Hey guys, had a couple of questions, thanks for your time!
When I am loading touchwiz based roms, they're built off of certain firmware versions... almost all of them are based off MF9 right now. My understanding is that if I'm loading an MF9 rom, I need to have the MF9 modem, firmware, etc previously loaded in order for everything to play nice with each other. I don't know the details of that, but would like to understand better. For example, could I run an MF9 TW ROM with the MDL modem and get stable results?
My second question is: do AOSP roms have that same dependency? For example, could I load any AOSP rom built for the sprint s4 and expect it to play nice even if I don't have the latest firmware (am currently on MDL modem). Thanks again!
Modems play nice with any build

Does camera firmware update stick?

I was wondering..... when I update my firmware using Odin and upon first opening camera app it says 'updating camera firmware'. If I then flash a custom ROM such as CM, does my camera firmware remain updated?
I always thought it did but just wanted to check

It must because if you switch back it doesn't upgrade again.

Yes it does

Samsung apps on custom roms

Is there anyways to get Samsung apps on a custom ROM? I find that while the 4.4.2 Roms generally work great, that lack of SApps and especially the one hand functionality, really reduce how great these Roms can be.
Or is the best bet just to root Samsung's Roms?
Thanks in advance.
Never heard of the leaked 4.4.2 kitkat Samsung rom? ???

I think he is referring to AOSP 4.4.2 ROMS.
For the OP, I don't think it is possible, and believe me, I am in the same position as you are, whether use the boring Samsung ROM with all those features or to use nice looking 4.4.2 ROMs with no Samsung features
Why wouldn't it be possible? Aren't the Samsung apps just apks that can be extracted? Or is it all based only on touch wiz?
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Its based on the touchwiz framework. Yeah, it's apks and you might be able to install them but they might either not start up, work properly or not be able to install.

Apks require TWiz framework to work which is impossible to get in AOSP ROMs. AFAIK, MIUI is the only custom ROM which supports SApps.

Google Play Edition (GPE) on Samsung S4 1337m?

Has anyone successfully (without losing any phone features) installed GPE Kitkat on Canadian Samsung S4?

The rom by Danvh works with i337m, if you mean by phone features, functionality them no you don't loose anything if you mean software wise, there is a bi of different since GPE is not touchwiz based.
2nd vote for Danvh's ROM, I've been using it on my Canadian i337m for months with no issues.
