Samsung Galaxy S4 US Cellular Rooting Issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Alright, so there isn't really a US Cellular area that I can find, so I'm going to do this here.
I'm having some issues rooting my phone, it's a US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S4 SCH-R970
I dont know if its because i updated it once, or what, but NO attempt to use Motochopper or any other root tool has worked, and i am not nearly skilled enough to start poking around the inside of my phone to do it myself manually or anything.
Every time i use motochopper, after is pushes for root for like 10 seconds, i get a message on there that says:
Failure
Cleaning
blahblah
and i am FAIRLY certain its because i updated my phone once, and if that is the case, can i just reset to factory settings, or something else?
this whole thing is getting on my last nerve, because my phone is out of service, so i dont care about the warranty, and i just want to root it, get a new recovery, and flash a new ROM, and i cant find anything to help me anywhere.
so thank you, in advance, for replying
if you need any other info, just ask

Now search/google Clockworkmod for your model phone and follow its procedure. It should also be an Odin procedure.
Read everthing and take no shortcuts!
Also I don't own your model phone!
I'm just trying to help
If CWM installs and is successful than you should be good.
You could also try Rom manager from the playstore just for CWM .
After installing rom manager open the app and hit the top button for installing CWM ,in the next screen go with the top selection and if your phones model pops up hit install.
Do not use rom manager to boot to CWM recovery.
Power it off and boot into recovery manually. If it boots to CWM than there you go.now un install rom manager and
Start your search for roms

Alright cool, so i have root access and now i have CWM
now i think all i need to do is unlock my bootloader because i can start recovery from ROM manager, but when i try to do it myself, it says booting recovery up top in little blue letters, but then it just restarts my phone again
EDIT: nevermind, i guess i was just holding the power+volup buttons for too long xD
i keep getting this error

[Q] motorchopper not granting root..

Kinda odd, I run motochopper, it goes through the process without a hitch and says everything is good to go, device reboots.
Superuser icon is there but when click it tells me it needs to update the binaries, then says install failed, and to send the log to developer.. however it does not generate a log.
I just want to install nobloat and get all this ATT trash off my phone. Maybe do more later but for now thats all.
ATT SGS-I337
I guess its because the binaries are not updating, but seeing as how it does not create a log file of the error, or in any way describe the nature of the error... Im kinda stuck.
I know this is a common issue, ive searched it, but I kinda find myself in a rut where when I search I just fiond threads made by others with the same issue.. with links leading to more of the same but no real solution.
Thanks for any help
it should give you the option to update them via "normal" or in recovery. have you tried both options (assuming you have twrp or cwm installed)? cheers

Phone is BONE STOCK, nothing else installed
Have tried "install" and "recovery install" both give the same error "install failed"
no idea what twrp or cwm is.
have you tried running an app that requires root?
What firmware are you on? Motochopper does not work for mf3 firmware.

Hmm, baseband? Yes it does end in mf3
If it is bone stock with MF3 you will need to look into the safestrap thread. That is the only root method at this time. But BEWARE with deleting out the bloat as there is no getting anything back via flashing in Odin or recovery. You can use titanium backup and FREEZE some bloat but again be careful. I have seen other users just freeze the wrong app and not be able to boot their phone.
The only way of getting the phone fixed is if your lucky and a Best Buy Samsung Experience shop will reflash the mf3 firmware for you.
So do not use motochopper or casual to try getting root and recovery. ONLY use safestrap and its recovery and don't try to install any other recoveries. Good luck and happy flashing

[Q] Going in circles

I promise that I have been reading threads for 2 weeks trying to figure out how to solve my problem without posting any questions, because I know no one likes to repeat themselves! I made a little bit of progress, but now I don't know what to do.
I bought my RAZR M in February. I took it out of the box and activated it. I never rooted it - had no intention of rooting it. Everything was great until the April update (98.15.66). All sorts of apps started crashing, background, Chrome, text messaging... phone kept deleting Contacts...it was a mess. I posted in the Moto Support forum and was advised to reset, which I did. It helped a little, sometimes apps still crashed, but I was dealing with it. I know the phone took at least one more update after that, but I don't know which. Then November 8, I did the OTA to 98.30.1. Phone got stuck on the red eye during boot. Tried clearing cache, reset, no luck. Called Moto support and they said they couldn't do anything unless I paid them $120 to flash the phone, because according to their info, my phone was rooted!! I never rooted it, I didn't know anything about rooting (still don't, really). I wonder if something failed during one of these updates and triggered their root checker. After reading threads here on XDA, I was able to use RDS lite to 98.16.3. So at least the phone boots, but now it keeps wanting to do the OTA to 98-30.1.
I assume I should avoid taking the OTA, but I don't know how to do that without hitting "Later" every 12 hours. If I'm understanding correctly, since I have 98.16.3 my bootloader is locked and there is nothing I can do about that. I thought maybe Titanium Backup would help so I could at least freeze the updater, but I don't have SU/root access to be able to do that. Where do I go from here? Thank you very much for any help!
So you've never been rooted and moto said it had been... Did you buy it from Verizon? Lets check and see if that device has ever been rooted... Power of the device... Power on while holding volume up + volume down... Select recovery...when you see Android Andy hold volume down tap volume up... Now you should see QE process does it say 0/0 or 0/1... If it says 0/0 your phone has never been rooted... If it said that I would either call them back.. After taking pix of that... And inform them of that.. Or take it to a Verizon store and request a new device... Post the pic in your topic on Motorola's forum and say how they refused service because your device was rooted when it wasn't... Matt the forums manager should reply and assist then

Where did you "clear cache" during your bootloop? I dont believe stock recovery has that option. Also how did you use RSDLite if you have a locked bootloader, wouldn't it just fail. Not trying to be a ****, i'm just pointing out the inconsistencies.

It does say 1/1. I don't believe it said that when I did the FDR back in April/May when I first starting having issues after the update to 98.15, but I can't say 100% for sure since I didn't even know what it meant up until a couple of weeks ago when I started reading up.
How it got like that, I don't know. I bought the phone from Amazon. Sold by Amazon, marked as Brand New. I didn't buy it from a Joe Schmo marketplace seller.
I have no idea for sure if my bootloader is unlocked or not. From what I've read, it seems that if you have 98.16.3, then it has to be. When I go into the AP fastboot screen, it says Device Status: Locked.
I did post on the Motorola forum and someone there told me how to check in the recovery menu for the root status, but since it says 1/1, someone recommended that I come over here to XDA, which is how I ended up doing the RSD lite thing to at least get my phone functional again.
All of this stuff is so far over my head...I'm not really interested in customization or removing the bloatware - I just disable or ignore it. I am only looking to get my phone back running like normal without telling it "Later" every 12 hours to avoid the update. And if I'm understanding correctly regarding the bootloader, there aren't many customization options anyway. Do I just wait to see if the 98.30 update gets added on the droid-developers.org site?

If it says 1/1 that means your currently rooted (0/1 it has at some point been rooted) download a root checker from google play... If it is rooted I'm sure you could install a super user then freeze the updater...

No, the phone tried to install 98.30.1 through OTA, but failed and got stuck on the red eye during boot. Moto said the update failed because I was rooted, which I never rooted the phone. How the phone came to say 1/1 on the recovery screen root check, I'll never know, but it's water under the bridge now.
Once I came here and read how to use RSD lite, I flashed it to 98.16. I don't know what version I was running before the 98.30.1 OTA attempt on Nov. 8.
I downloaded Root Checker. For SU it says, "Not found."
Root Access: "no access"
Is this because I only flashed the VRZ_XT907_9.8.1Q-78-1_1FF.xml, which from what I understand is straight stock? Is the phone technically not really "rooted" then? Is it possible to get the Super Access at this point, or am I stuck?
Again, thank you for your help and patience!

Ok, I will give that a try. I have read about motochopper, but was confused as to whether it was the right thing for the version I'm running, I think I was reading "Build version," mixing that with "System version," and getting scared when it said it will brick the phone if not used on the right version. Since my Build Number is 9.8.1Q.78-1, the directions and links on droidrazr.com posted by livinginkaos and SamuriHL should work for me, right? (assuming I can follow the directions, that is)
I wonder if this will fix the strange random app crashes I've been getting ever since the April update. It's very inconvenient to have my text message history wiped.
Thank you for the advice, ezknives!
*Update*
I used motochopper! I used Titanium backup and froze the updater.apk! \o/
I have one more question - now that I have this super user access, is it still best to just disable/freeze the bloatware instead of removing it altogether? I read that some people have used Titanium backup to delete it, I also recall reading that some people had issues with updates if they deleted them and ended up having to reinstall them...?

Yes it's best to freeze it all rather then delete it.... So you don't have to do as much when the next OTA comes out...

Everything seems to be back to normal - at least back to how it was a few weeks ago. It still has the random background app crash, but whatever. I've been living with that since the April update. I'm just happy my phone is functional again.

[Q] no wifi rooted at&t S4 4.4.2 NB1

greetings!
I've been searching for hours and bashing my brains trying to get wifi working. It originally broke after an OTA update
tried all the tips and still nothing works permanently. The things I have tried are too numerous to remember or list.
It's not a hardware issue as wifi can work for periods of time but it always breaks - I assume because of an update that downloads and breaks it.
i see talk of reflashing "modules" with safestrap but safestrap has never worked properly and now does not work at all ("unfortunately safestrap has stopped") Can modules be flashed from Odin?
TIA !
Sorry to hear about your troubles man. Been there, done that...
IMHO, if you don't have hardware issues, this what you should do:
ODIN to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2616221 (post 1, the Returning to Stock / ODIN section)
After that root
Root with towel root (https://towelroot.com/)
Install SuperSU (PlayStore) and let it disable Knox.
Install BusyBox (PlayStore) and let it cook
Install SELinux Mode Changer (PlayStore). Run and set it to Permissive.
Install Safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=45693712)
Now it's time to flash you favorite rom (Safestrap has the list). Copy the following to your SD card:
Your favority ROM
SuperSU.zip file. (http://download.chainfire.eu/451/Sup...erSU-v2.01.zip)
Your modem zip file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...96&postcount=1).

Same boat as well I believe, need help please.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T I337 ucufnbn1 MDF. And I've tried to get into the UMTS menu with every possible number and trick I can find on Google, here, YouTube. And nothing works. I just want to be able to sim unlock it and also be able to put cwm recovery on it so I can put ROMs on it. I do have it rooted with Towel and have busy box installed as well as SU. Cyanogen's website picks it up by its other name jfelte or whatever and has a lot of ROMs. If someone could please help me finish getting the rest of the way, that would be greatly appreciated.

Ok , well I honestly appreciate your help with this. With this setup can I install any ROMs at all? Am I limited to certain ones or can I install any compatible ones for my model? I know sometimes when your on a certain stock ROM your stuck with only like certain types. Like Paranoid or whatever it is, and a few others.

This mini-guide should work!
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks! :good:

buying a new razr m to root?

I'm entirely new to anything phone/development related so I apologize for my ignorance (I also apologize if this is in the wrong section). I've had a razr M for about 2 years now and I'm entirely content with it except after the last update I can no longer use my foxfi for wifi access. From what I understand I can't root my phone and downgrade from this operating system so my question is this: Can I buy a new one off ebay for ~$100, root it and use foxfi (or some other free wifi tether) while keeping my unlimited data and not "bricking" it? The battery on my current phone has gone to crap anyways and I was considering buying a replacement phone considering they're only ~$100 anyways.
It's a pain in the but trying to figure all of this out with only limited time to browse the internet at work and trying to sort the 100's of pages of info from my phone.
Is this feasible? Are there certain things I need to verify about a phone before I buy it to make sure I can complete this process?
Thanks in advance,
Rory
If you're on the latest firmware, you CAN root with Towel Root and unlock with Motopocalypse. Then you can downgrade back to JB. There's a method posted by @bweN diorD somewhere in this forum.

Thanks RikRong! How do I know if I'm on the latest firmware (does that just mean the latest operating system? My phone says 4.4.2 so I'm assuming that's a yes)? Sorry, there's a thousand new terms and I'm struggling to take in what this all means.
When it comes to trying to root my phone, since I have no more foxfi I also don't have a way to have internet access on my computer/tablet to walk me through the rooting process/assist me if something goes wrong with the... would you think it's intuitive enough/fullproof that if I print out the thread I can just follow it through and shouldn't have issues? Also, I looked through the first 4 or 5 pages in this forum and didn't find any threads started by "bweN dior" but I'm probably just overlooking what I'm looking for. Do you know what the thread was titled?
Thanks,
Rory

actually, i didnt make a guide for this model. i made it for the hd/maxx hd. the root and bootloader unlock is the same and you can use those files, but you can NOT use any of the phone specific software in the guide or you will likely brick your phone.

Yeah, I saw that it was someone else that made the guide for the M, but I like how yours is set-up. I was going to point him to your thread in the HD forum for rooting and unlocking, then refer him to guide in the M forum for downgrading. Use Bwen's guide to use Towel Root and Motopocalypse. Get TWRP from here: http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img and flash a SU zip to gain permanent root. Then use this guide to downgrade: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786016 .

Okay, I'm trying to start this process. From my droid, I downloaded http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/msm8960/TWRP2710-RAZR_M-KITKAT.img but immediately I'm encountering problems. My phone says it cannot open this file. I'm already dreading this is going to be difficult/dangerous...
Why can't I open this file? Also, what is flashing a SU zip?
There is far too much about this I don't understand.
I am willing to pay someone to root a razr m for me. Do I have any takers?
Towel Root and Motopocalypse are both apps that you can download to the phone and then run. They're just apps, so they are as easy as opening the app then running. You need to use Towel Root, then Motopocalypse to unlock, and then you can install TWRP. If you don't want to use fastboot to install recovery, then you can flash it with Rashr or Flashify. Just download TWRP and place on your external SD, no need to open or extract it. Flash it with one of those apps. Once you're rooted and unlocked, you should be able to use that guide to downgrade.

just use the tutorial i posted before as a guide, substituting the files @RikRong gave you for the recoveries.
i just updated the guide to include a complete step by step for flashing the recoveries and su zip.
the only thing you will need is fastboot and adb in the same folder with your recovery file.
the guide instructs to use adb and fastboot from my script, but you wont have my script. thats why you need to grab adb and fastboot from google.
its not difficult, you just dont understand what needs to be done. you dont open the recovery with the phone booted up. just read the guide and subsequent link to the step by step and you will quickly see where you are going wrong.

just a quick disclaimer for those not following along, ^^^^^ the firmware and recoveries in this guide are for the 926 only!!! use it for reference only!! any other files in the guide and the guide itself, is universal.

Now I think I got problems. I thought I had it all figured out with all of the walkthroughs. I have the phone in fastboot mode and I was flashing it with RSD for the previous firmware. It was going through the steps and on 7/20 it said failed flash. I tried again and now it says failed flash after 1/20. I'm afraid to try and boot the phone. What should I do?

If your boot loader isn't unlocked, you can't flash older FW. Did you unlock already?

It says USB error. I unplugged it from the computer and tried it again. It's step 7/20 "flash modem "non-hlos.bin" where it is getting screwed up.

Yes. I think? I did these steps successfully
-----------------------------------------
2. BOOTLOADER UNLOCKING
-----------------------------------------•Download Towel Root [XDA] [WEBSITE] - Disregard if you have previously rooted using Towel Root
•Download Motopocalypse [WEBSITE] [DOWNLOAD]
•Place both on external SDcard
•Install and run Towel Root
•Follow any in-app prompts
•Reboot
•Install and run Motopocalypse
•Follow any in-app prompts
•Reboot
•PROFIT!
My error specifically says this:
Failed flashing process. 7/20 flash modem "non-hlos.bin" -> USB error occurred while reading/writing.
I unplugged it and tried another USB port and it went through all the steps 20/20. Then it rebooted my phone and the phone says "please wait, this may take a few minutes". After several minutes RSD told me to "manually power on the phone". Since the phone was never shut off I couldn't do this so I unplugged the USB and replugged it in thinking maybe there was another USB error. RSD has now finished and says result is "PASS". However my phone still says "please wait, this may take a few minutes". Should I let me phone be or should I restart it?

power + volume up + down rebooted me to a screen that asked me to select my language (just as before). After selecting English it goes back to the "please wait this make take a few minutes" screen.
It's working!!!! I just ran RSD again (and this from the start on a usb 2.0 port as I read 3.0 can screw it up). This time it worked like a charm! I'm back on jellybean and posting from my laptop through a foxfi connection from my phone! SO thankful for this and those who did the write ups/walk throughs and posted in here! I got a lot of apps and setting to update ahead of me ugh. I'm going to do some donating here for the help! Thanks to those who posted in this thread and the ones who made those write ups and the app developers!
How do I keep my phone from automatically updating back to KK?? I didn't let it update when KK originally came out (I just kept clicking postpone) until about a month or two later it just updated on it's own. Well my phone just started automatically downloading a system update again. I put it in airplane mode but how do I keep this update from happening again and getting screwed by KK again?

Samsung Galaxy S4 I need help please!!!

i have the samsung galaxy s4 on straight talk sm-s975l, running 4.3. I have a couple of questions, I have tried to root my phone with everything out there, towelroot, kingroot, oneclickroot, etc. The only way I have had any luck rooting my device is kingo root. Is this method a good way, or should I use odin and if so how can I do it? I want to install roms, force apps to my SD card, and anything else I can do with a rooted phone. I am new to the whole rooting thing so please make it easy on a newby...lol. I have many more questions, but for now I'll save them for later. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

KingRoot is sometimes problematic.
But since you want to change your ROM, it doesn't matter.
To change a ROM, one requires a custom recovery. The most reliable is TWRP. It also is the only one that is still being developed.
TWRP can be flashed in several ways.
One would be with Odin, the other is by using an app called Flashify.
I think using the app is simpler. SO you just need the app and a TWRP .img file which you can get from their site twrp.me.
In the app you will have 2 choices. Select recovery. After that is done, turn off the phone and try to boot into recovery by pressing power + volume up.

Asked and answered in this thread. In the future, try to constrain your various questions to one thread please. It makes it easier for others to help you.
