[Q] Whites Not As Vibrant? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my replacement G2 today and while holding it side-by-side with my original G2, I noticed the whites on the new one aren't quite as vibrant. I then met up with a friend who also has a G2 and put all three phones side-by-side. Her phone has the same less vibrant whites as mine did. Neither new device nor my new one had the bright, vibrant whites of my original G2. Is something wrong with the two displays that aren't quite as vibrant, or perhaps my original G2 had something up with its display? It would be helpful if someone could shed some light onto the issue! You can see my old device and new device in the photo below. Unfortunately the photograph doesn't convey the difference as strongly as seeing the devices in person. Yes, both phones have identical display/brightness settings.

I'm curious why the left one looks smaller and has no lg logo?

Wow, I didn't even notice the logo on the left one wasn't visible in the photo! It's there, I swear, lol.
The right one might look bigger because it's in a case.

I also had the same issue. I prefer the whiter white display but the new replacement I got also was not as white. I think I'll be returning both. Not sure if I should try another replacement or just give up.

At this point I'm debating keeping the one with the whiter whites... This is really frustrating.

Just curious what was the issue with that one?

What's wrong with the original? I've gotten replacements that I sent back.
-sent from my LG G2 using XDA Premium 4

The original I had squeaks with little pressure on the sides and back. Very much annoying. Does that happen to you guys too?

No squeaks at all with mine. The original was starting to show color bleed/slight yellow screen discoloration on the left edge. It is very, very minor. I've decided to keep my original phone and send the replacement back.

I have exactly same problem my fathers g2 to is much more brighter then mine. And whites are more clear. Is there anyway to fix it?

What to check when you get the new Nexus 4 in hand?

I can finally leave limbo and get it in hand tomorrow.
And I heard so many "issues" about the phone,
so before I unlock bootloader and flash thing.
I wanna check the phone completely before risking the warranty
So what is the common "issues" right now?
What I know is:
1. Phone rattle
2. Yellow tint / Too warm display / Dead pixels
3. Buzzing sound
and what else?
Thanks
Appearantly "issue" number 2 (Yellow Tint) is only experienced if you update (OTA) once you receive your nexus. If you don't update you won't experience the yellow tint "issue".
A static noise when in a call, if the phone is super close to your ear you can hear it.

It went from glue to software?
Hmmm, some people complain about the bottom of their device creaking. Like where the screws/usb port/microphone are. Mine does, but its only if I push on it. Holding it normally, there is no issue.

Left - pre ota, right - Post ota. After quadrant they are in reverse. Forget about clarity, just look at the colours. Shot handheld with dslr, so a bit shaky.
Here's your proof that you can see with your eyes that it is ota.

That doesn't even make sense.. I guess they changed the color calibrations in the OTA? Well whatever I just hope and pray that my nexus 4 doesn't have any of these issues.
Don't worry about the color too much. If it could be changed by an OTA then devs will come up with the perfect colors. Think Galaxy Nexus.
There is a small rattle around the camera area if you shake it. Honestly I don't find that a problem since I'm not shaking it constantly.
The buzzing in the earphone/headphone is a bigger problem but not annoying to me. I can't hear it when in calls or listening to music. It's only very pronounced when there is no sound coming out.
I still hope Google itself can have a better tune in the color temp.
About the yellow tint (dots), is it common or just a rare case?
Most likely a rare case, my phone currently has no issues with yellow spots on the screen
what about bleeding sceen i seen 2 spot on top of the screen when in dark room just reminded me of LG G2X.

This is software, kernels are always able to adjust the color balancing and saturation etc once more custom kernels come out this problem will be addressed/fixed.

You'll get that with any LCD really... if it's really bad you might want to see if they'll exchange it, otherwise there's a chance it will be worse if you get it replaced.

Yeah, two small areas on the top of the screen where it just looks lighter than the rest. Not bad compared to most LCDs I've used.

Ya, i notice the whiter color in the second I turned it on.
I am okay with it. That's why I put my SP on it.
But the yellow spot is not...
So I just called for a replacement.
Dang...need to get one SP again
Another thing ( quite obvious ) are admittedly rare [ saw one user in reddit mentioning this] dust under the screen or noticeable dead pixels .
Also check to make sure there are no "bulges" around the sides of the phone where the black backing meets the front bezel. I have a small bulge near the bottom right side of the phone that looks like a little clip failed to engage. I have tried pushing it in to sit flush but it does nothing. I wasn't going to do anything about it since it's not that big of a deal but I called Play support and told the rep the issue. He said he has had a few reports of this problem and recommended an RMA. So I have a new one on the way.
Check this thread for pics of it happening to another guy:

LCD panel too close to digitizer?

anyone else noticing that LCD liquid effect from simple touches of the screen? started noticing it when i had the TPU case, and if i kinda bumped the edges, i'd see that liquid effect (like when you push on an LCD monitor or TV or something)
then i started realizing that even w/o the case, it does it all over the screen. you don't even have to be pressing hard and you start to see that liquid effect already.
obviously AMOLED doesn't tend to have these issues (i guess bc of how their screen is made, the glass seems MUCH harder, like on the GS3/4) because comparing an AMOLED panel with glass to an LCD, you can even feel a difference...from my expeirence with LCD (rezound, DNA, G2) the glass flexes much more which can cause that liquid movement...whereas with amoled (nexus, Gs3, GS4) the glass doesn't flex at all so it doesn't produce that effect.
i'm only worried bc recently i've been noticing that without much pressure, it's still starting to do it. is it that the LCD is way too close to the digitzer that this is happening, or what?
i've noticed it on my co-workers G2 as well, and i've seen some posts about it here, but i'm curious as to the consensus.

noticed this when i first got the lg g2 i had a case on it aswell and i thought it was a defect.

exactly. yeah, glad to know it wasn't just mine. the TPU from verizon was pretty damn tight, so it hugged those bezels and i guess that's what made it flex more.

i think these things degrade over time, personally. the liquid effect didn't seem nearly as bad the first few weeks of having the G2, and now it's worse..

yeah, i did that on my S4 and it still looks terrible compared to my DNA/G2. lol.the S4 isn't bad except for all the lag, and idk, but all the AOSP roms on the S4 tend to have bugs and issues so i don't even bother.

I have the diztronic case on and the LCD panel doesn't have the liquid effect. As for amoled, I've never had a good experience with it. On the S2 and S3 I had those black spots that can be common on amoled panels. I then got some slight screen burn in the S3. I didn't have these two issues on the S4 but it did have the scrolling blur problem with dark backgrounds.
Don't have this issue yet with the D803(Canada). Maybe its only a VZW issue....?

Lol, I have adjusted quite well and don't think that it's a massive difference compared to the G2. Sure it's bigger, but not night and day.
And I actually missed amoled. I don't do graphic design on my phone so I actually appreciate the crazy pop of the colors and the deep blacks. And this screen doesn't have those annoying dots all over it which was driving me crazy on the G2 in certain lighting conditions.
But the G2 is a great phone man, I totally understand you keeping it. I haven't looked back like you thought I would though lol. I absolutely love this device lol.

[Q] Blue tint on screen when viewing it from side..

Hello! I have had my g2 d802 for around a month now, and I have noticed a blue tint when I am viewing it from the side.. When I tilt it to the other side it began to be yellow. At its worst the screen is "washed out". So I am wondering if this is normal? Or is it a hardware problem?

Are you able to go to a store to compare your phone with a working display model? I'd check there first to see if the display model has a better screen than yours. Chances are your screen may be defective. You'll know right away if its good or not

Yes, I should probably do that. I am around 40km away from a store where I can try one, but I will probably go there and check. I read that this phone had pretty good viewing angles so it might be defective..:/
Just guessing here, but did you come from a Samsung device or any other with (AM)OLED screen tech?
That tech is self illuminating and doesn't exhibit the off-axis effects typical of even the very best LCD displays.
It's normal for a LCD display to wash out and/or color shift off axis.
As to whether or not yours is typical, I can't say.

No yellow tint at all here... maybe your unit is defective? I'd say exchange it.

I see a polarized-like tint when I tilt the phone, but I don't see yellow. I still have the factory screen protector on though, so not sure what the naked screen looks like yet. I'll check it out when the real screen protector comes in.
Same here
I have the same problem. Went to LG G4 from Samsung Note 4. The viewing angle is nowhere close to Galaxy Note 4 or S6. It's disappointing, because otherwise LG G4 is an amazing phone.
Yeah, my T-Mobile H811 looks funny when tilted, I get a very slight yellow hue at the bottom but if I tilt it back to straight it goes away. I had issues like this with pretty much every LCD display I've ever seen, even my Nexus 9 does it, it's just the way LCD panels are, which is why I prefer AMOLED.
The issue of yellow tint is directly related to what kind of ambient lighting you're surrounded by. It's a lot more visible outdoors in daylight (cloudy day) than late at night with incandescent lighting. It's not visible at all in fluorescent lighting. I'm just ignoring it because it's otherwise a great phone.
Screen looked like that when I bought a cheap screen protector. I spent 30 bucks on good one and no horrible screen

How do I know if my Screen is bad?

This is my first time with an AMOLED screen and I keep reading things about tints and such with the screen. I don't see any colored tints yet though I'm still waiting on my Sim card to really use it, just set it up ahead of time. I did notice though that when I compared it to my Nexus 5 the whites on my N6P look kinda off white. I'm not sure if that's normal or not?

If the tint of the screen is uneven or there is an excessive yellow tint then the screen is duff. Have a look in the "pink hue" thread in the Q&A section and there's pics of the uneven green/pink tints. If you don't see any and you like the screen then there's no issue. At the end of the day, it's your perspective of whether or not you have a problem.

Really. I have this ever so slight purplish/pinkish thing on the right that doesn't seem to be there all the time. Literally the only time I ever see it again is when I'm in these forums and someone reminds me to start looking for it with a post about it. Seriously.

If you can't see a problem with the screen by looking at it then you're fine. Don't go looking for issues with something because you'll psych yourself into thinking something is wrong when nothing is wrong. . I use to be the same way trust me. Just enjoy a great phone with a really good dev community..
I was just asking if the whites not looking pure white was normal. I said I don't see any colorish tint but I posted this cause I have no experience with AMOLED and didn't know if that was normal for this type of screen or not. I'm not looking for issues its just a question.
Is there an app to test for tint?
There's considerable variability in the white point of AMOLED displays due to the manufacturing process. Each one is a little different. Hey, it's "organic", right? Seems like they should be able to calibrate that at the factory, but apparently not. If you send it back and get another one, it might look whiter, or it might not. It should look reasonably uniform, and reasonably white. If you think it's unacceptable, send it back.
If you're worried that it might not be exactly 6000 Kelvins, then you should seek therapy.
Back in the Galaxy Nexus days, I saw one that was very pink, one very yellow, and one that was just right (mine!).
So I got a replacement cause I felt the screen had a tint.. Here is the comparison pics... The one on the left is the replacement. Think the difference is clear.
Just out of curiosity, how are the perfectionists claiming the screen should look? Mine is like the left image, and I'm happy with it.

The screen should have an even tint all the way across it. Both of the screens in the pic change from a pink to a green/blue tint.

As long as your happy, thats what matters.
I admit I have OCD when it comes to electronics. Got an RMA with a screen that works for me, so I am happily enjoying my phone. :victory:
Got get over it at some point.
Call me crazy but I can deal with the uneven tint. Hell, as I was taking the pics I didn't even notice it, although I probably will now lol but what bugged me and made me RMA was the solid film which looks like a yellowish tint that dulled whites and kinda the screen as a whole. I'm happy with the replacement even if its not perfect

The replacement device on the left looks worse than the 'defective device' but they're both bad if I'm honest. RMA again buddy.
I just checked with my mate's 6P and mine and mine was brighter than his and he noticed this. His display was less warm too but a bit on the grey side. Both panels had an even color finish, unlike your samples mate.
Here's mine at lowest brightness. Not sure if its "perfect" or not but seems fine to me.

I think the one on the right looks more even.
