Is there some kind of technical limitation of Android that prevents this most rudimentary of features of a computing device with a screen?
I'm on my second Android phone (from Hero --> to new Desire) and after 5 years with Windows Mobile I not only have zero regrets, I just pity anyone still stuck on WM... but enough of that ... at least there are screen shot apps! I just don't get it at all. It can't be that nobody has asked for one. So, what is the limitation of Android that prevents something so simple as a screenshot to be generated?

Oh what the hell, while I am at it, I might as well show off svetius's newly available YOUTUBE embed code here at XDA -- which -- shhhhh!!!! --- it's a big secret, only I alone am supposed to know about it.
PHP:

where xxxxxxxxxx = the video file name in the URL after watch?v=
I don't think there is any technical problem, I think it just wasn't added to official API yet. Yes, I know it should.
And if you are in urgent need of doing some screenshots, then you could take quite awkward, but working for non-rooters, approach: take screenshots on your PC using Android SDK.
I agree it should be much easier to just take a simple screenshot. Where can we ask google to add this function?

You could star this issue:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6547
I don't know, wouldn't that be a pretty big security issue?
A screenshot app is good for nothing if you can only take screenshots of the app itself. So it has to have access to screen captures of any app.
Now I'd just write some service running in the background waiting for key presses and taking a picture every time. When you type in passwords, the default option is showing the letter for a small time.
That should be sufficient to get user passwords. I would not want software that can do this on my phone.
I know open home has a screenshot feature you enable by the camera button. Maybe someone can rip the code from there and make a separate app?

The home replacement apps only take screenshots of the home screen (OpenHome, dxTop).
You can easily use Droid Explorer on a Windows PC to do screenshots.
I came from a Treo device, and one of the best features on that device was the ability to just start dialing from the home screen. Most of the android phones do support searching for your contacts by typing from the home screen, but as far as I know, none support input of actual numbers.
I realize the maximum benefit is only there if you own a device like the Droid Pro with a portrait keyboard, but surely I'm not the only one that misses this feature. I believe it was available on Blackberries as well, so I'm sure there's a ton of BB users that miss this.
If it's an easy thing to do, I'm sure a developer could write something without wasting too much time, and it would earn them some money if they chose to make it a paid app.
Anybody interested in this? I'm willing to help in any way I can, and I'd even write the app, but I have no coding experience, so I'd probably just screw something up.
You'll have to open an app either way, unless you have a hardware keyboard, so why not use a traditional dialer app? If you want a smart dialer check out dialer one.
Theres also an app that will let you pin shortcuts to apps to the notification panel.
I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly.. on all touchscreen phones your options are limited and you'll need to use search and then open the keyboard or another app at some point to call someone.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
This app would be meant for phones that have keyboards.
I refuse to buy a phone without one.

There are some homescreen dialer widgets in the market, which allow you to dial right from a home screen.
Got my U8 today and here's my initial impression:
Plus - 1. Immediately went to English, no Chinese. EZ setup. 2. Several choices for watch faces. Several choices for menu icons. Some are color and big. 3. Love the vibration for notification. 4. Speaker while on phone good. 5. Phone pick up works good.
Cons - 1. Washes out in sunlight bad. That's a show stopper for me. 2. Have to turn off phone Bluetooth and use handset for a private call. Switch is in my phone app and simple but still. 3. I use Touchdown for email and it doesn't notify on the watch. Working on that. 4. Band seems a bit 'soft', not hard rubber.
Added Con - Not having the watch face constantly lit is driving me nuts!

Hi rogerperk,
Some image to your statement is very much appreciate.
Thanks
I was just looking at one of these on ebay today. Are you able to reply to text messages through it? Does it have voice input as well as a keyboard?

I bought a Pebble. Regardless of whether the U8 has voice input or not if I can't see the face they it's useless to me. And outside that is the case. If that doesn't matter then I'd be willing to sell you mine for a cheaper price than you'll get on line. Wore it a total of 2 days.

Thanks but I'll pass. I'm going to stick with my MotoActv for now unless I can pick up a cheap Galaxy Gear or either the LG G-watch or Moto360 convinces me when released.

LOL good choice! The longer I have my Pebble the better I like it.
Just got mine today
Hey Roger,
Been following another thread ("Elegance U8") and now this one since ordering mine off Ebay a week ago. Got it in the mail today, and I can see your points for both pro and con.
Here are my questions, if anyone knows. (yet)
I remember seeing what the actual phone OS is called somewhere, but can't find it now. EDIT: It's called "Nucleus." Have found some info and a sample download online. Might try and see if I can learn how to develop for it.Though the device plays nice with Android and ios, it's actually neither of those things. If someone knows what the name of it is, is it possible to find a tutorial on coding it somewhere?
The initial reason I ask is:
Not waiting for the manufacturer to patch the "shut off screen" function. I'd like to see if I can figure out how to do this myself, and
Enabling texting. Rather than a traditional keyboard, am thinking a sliding alphabet. A - slide to B - slide to C, etc. A pain in the butt, but probably less so than trying to use a keyboard. Picture the "carousel" from the Kindle Fire series, but with letters / numbers / symbols. Also, as suggested earlier in this thread texting with use of the mic, if possible.
Not saying I'd be able to do any of this, but I have limited experience doing some dev work in Android (through Unity) and am wondering if it's possible to self teach this OS, figuring that we quite probably won't see a lot of feature updates from whoever the manufacturer is of this product.
Thanks, and God bless.
If you do develop, please keep us updated. i like the watch but would love to be able to reply to messages. let me know if i can help any also in the development
Does anyone have the latest firmware for the smart watch?
Mine is: M28_KHR.FN1.V04
Regards.
Conect, was wondering if you'd gotten anywhere with OS development for this watch?
Is this the one you got, this is the one i have but the icons and analog faces are different... ?

I've had my watch for about a week now, and I gotta say, for the price, it's pretty killer! I wish there was more development for it besides distributing firmware and flash tools.
I've noticed that when you activate Google Voice search and texting with the watch connected, it uses the watch mic to pick up your voice. I was thinking it might be cool to find a way to trigger voice search and voice texting from the watch, since you can already use it for voice input as long as you trigger the feature on your phone. Have you made any progress on trying to develop for the u8?
Also, I believe I read that they're going to release an SDK for MediaTek devices, such as this watch. Might be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
Wish there was a way to add a count down timer to this watch. It needs to have the timer with a start/stop button on the screen as well a reset button for the timer. so If I set it to 30secons, when I hit the reset after the 30s is up it will reset it back to 30secs again.
I need to root my phone so I can turn off a few notifications that I do not want to transmit.
driver instalation problem
helo,
maybe in wrong thread, but if anyone could help i would be grateful. my windows 8 dont recognise u8 watch, and i cant install provided drivers for vista. i'm stuck, and i would like to instal firmware, but without watch been recognised its not posible. thanx
Is there a way to make the U8 vibrate when you receive a text message or have a phone call?
I was wondering if anyone has found a way to get different faces on this watch. I believe mine may be a clone.
I just got my Nexus Player yesterday, and set it up, but could not find a way to add a second account. After doing some research, it looks like this is a feature that was left out for the moment.
Question is: Is anyone out there working on adding this feature (via ROM, app, however) or is there already a way to do it that I may have missed? Seems like it would be a key feature for a "living room" style device, unless Google expects everyone to live on their own or buy multiple devices and use multiple inputs just to switch accounts.
I was wondering if it was possible to add Movies and TV shows to the Nvidia shield home screen Channels? Or using a different launcher. Like Movies from Tvzion? Thanks
You can add TVzion to the home screen by using an app called "TV app repo". It will essentially make an icon shortcut that works.
If however you are wanting to add movies from within the Tvzion app in a similar way to how google music or video works and displays them on the home screen then it needs to be a supported app by google I think ( I may be wrong) Good luck with it being supported in future if it is some sort of stream......... /cough
You only have to look at how spotify was working in this way and now is not. And seems to be unofficially unsupported in this way now (due to a falling out by both parties about fairness/competition with music apps and their own service i think) You cannot have it on its own row on the homescreen by using the customize homescreen settings anymore it simply is not available just the icon to set it running.
You have to understand that TVzion displays the streams and not google, so getting it to then run TVzion from a button click on the home screen and then any individual stream that may or may not have possibly moved in the meantime also is virtually un-doable in my eyes, unless someone knows of some workaround that achieves a similar thing?

Thank you for the reply. I actually messaged the DEV of the TV zion app. And he é stated that he will support adding movies to the home screen. He just hasn't updated the app to be compatible with 8.0 and 9.0 Android, as of yet.
