Please let me know about adb shell, how to transfer files from pc to GT, i am totally new on this. Please me how to use adb shell?
adb.exe is a program that runs on your windows pc, and is a part of the android software developer kit, sdk, distributed for free. adb, android data bridge, lets us transfer files and execute commands between your phone and pc.
thank you rangercaptain for the clear answer.
also I was lacking this piece of info.
now it seems I have new hurdle to overcome, I'm based in Shanghai and it seems that I cannot download SDK. I get the typical 'time out' error when I try to go to both: code.google.com/android/download.htm and developer.android.com/sdk in 99.9% of the time you get these errors, it means the site is blocked.
any suggestions for mirror sites....I haven't been able to find one.
thanks!
thanks rangercaptain i was trying sim unlock as rotohammer says in his post put adb shell code and do big copy paste, will running adb.exe allows me to copy paste code as rotohammer says? thanks

Yes, that is exactly correct. It is a very cool, very smart method for us non-coders to unlock our tabs.
Make sure the first command you execute is "adb devices" to verify your connection and drivers. Copy everything from Roto's post. then right click in the command window, and select Paste from the pop up menu. Wait a minute ... done!

I googled "android sdk" and came up with a few links. Here is a promising one:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Choose the most recent. Also you will need drivers for your pc if you don't use windows 7. Again, google or search this galaxy tab forum.

Here is a website that I used to set up adb in general &
which also has a list of commands
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
Once you have followed all the steps explained in here to set it up,
whenever you want to "send a command" over to your GT, you ...
1) first run "cmd" on your Windows device
2) and when the cmd windows pops up enter:
cd\
cd AndroidSDK\tools\
adb devices
(to check if your device really is listed)
.. and then, run the actual command
developer.android.....is blocked. I googled untill 2 in the night and found a few local stored outdated version of SDK. One of them actually wanted to update itself, so I think I'm ok now
thanks again
Drivers for pc, and putting adb.exe and any file you want to send to the tab in tools directory are the two keys for success
Thanks to all, worked. I give you guys kudos via thank meter.
That was a good exchange of thought! XDA rocks!
ok, just got a new laptop because the old one died and im trying to get adb working on it...i spend multiple hours trying to get it to work, can someone please point me to a guide that works with windows 7 ultimate...i have followed many and then go to command prompt and type adb and it basically says that it doesnt recognize the command...sorry for the noob question, i had it before, i tried multiple guides and im still adb-less

+1
cd C:\wherever\your\sdk\is\located\
Lets start off with a simple question: do you have the sdk installed?
If you wish to use ADB first you have to run it from the directory that it is via the command prompt (start -> run -> type cmd). The easiest way to get it to work by just typing adb at the command prompt it by putting adb.exe in c:\windows.
Sorry if anything is slightly off, I use the Linux version of ADB.
Good post

I need to do this through ADB (everything is off 90 degrees but touching the screen doesn't work properly), could someone please give me the commands to rename the build.prop that is currently there and the commands for renaming the right one (already on the device). Thanks in advance.

you have to copy around:
"adb shell"
if prompt is $ then "su" else
"cd /system"
"cp build.prop build.test" (as example)

Sorry for getting a little snippy, I had a bad day. I got it figured out. I actually edited my post to remove the mod comment but someone quoted it while I was editing it.
Yeah, better post in general next time (moved)
cheers guys.
Ok..
I cleared delvik cache.. battery and decided to try out a new kernel.. now it hangs..
Now I only have an 8 gig.. I guess i cleared out the backup to save space because as I went to look for it, it was gone. Now I cant get any roms on the phone to reflash.. and i deleted the ROMs on there...
How do I get a rom on the phone to reflash it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chris
Bump
Can anybody help with this? Basically is there a way to get files on the phone in recovery mode?
I'm sort of new... I see the side load but not sure how to use it. Says load the files on once activated but not sure how the relates to the computer. Or where I put the commands to do it. Thanks.
Chris

You are running a custom recovery right?
You can use adb to push files when booted into a custom recovery.
The command used would be
Code:
adb push nameofzip /storage/emulated/0
To read more on adb check out efrants sicky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010338 adb commands are about half way down on the OP.
When u say custom recovery do u mean CWM? I do have that... and my computer registers the phone when I plug it in. But nothing pops up. I don't think USB debugging is on...
I'll check out the link.

Yep, that is a custom recovery. If you have questions post them here. I'll be around for a little while.
I think I am so close.
I got the adb and fastboot files, and upon checking devices in fastboot, it does say that my device is connected.
But I cant get the adb driver to put the files on my phone.
Im using "adb push -d C:\android1\cm-10.1-20121214-NIGHTLY-mako.zip
And it says device not found?
Sorry for the questions, but thank you for the help.
Chris
(and im in the directory where the adb file is located)
(Once I get this resolved... im always gonna have one backup on my phone)

Ok. The best way is to open the command prompt from the folder in which you have adb. The easy way to do that is hold down shift and right click. Then choose open window here.
Next, once you are booted into recovery type
Code:
adb devcies
If it returns a number then proceed to push the file. (Its easy to make a typo so change the file to something easy like cm10.zip)
So you would type
Code:
adb push cm10.zip /storage/emulated/0
I erased everything the other day by mistake and total noobishness Lol. I just used wugs tool kit to flash the stock image back. Might be useful if struggling with adb etc.

What is anyone going to learn by using a toolkit?! I commend the OP for putting in the time to learn how to use adb. So in the future if they were to run into a problem they would know how to easily fix it.

I got it guys.
I realized that fastboot and adb only get activated in their respective UI's... And i refined my CMD commands a bit after a little more reading.
Problem solved. And i learned more about the android platform in the process. Time well spent.
I want to formally thank you guys. This is why this community is great.

Guys i have a problem...
I wantes to delete all data on my N4 and start again with a fresh device, My phone is rooted and i had an custom rom installed, i deleted all data pictures and everything else, after that i also formated the sd card, cache etc etc and thats where it went wrong Now i can go into cwm but nothing more... when i reboot i see the black screen with google on it and after that nothing happens...
How can i solve this problem? I hope that i didnt bricked my phone
should still be able to mount usb storage in cmw, that or push files using adb, if you can get into recovery then you can always get your device back
I just helped a user with the same problem yesterday.
Here's the link with steps how to push a rom to your phone with adb: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2137976
can you get into fastboot? if you can then all you have to do is follow this thread:

No, you can't mount USB in recovery. The Nexus 4 does not use UMS.
Ok thanks for the fast reply, im gonna try to push a rom with adb.
''I know you don't have a rom on your phone. This is how you can push one to your phone.
You must be booted in recovery
Put the rom in the same directory on your PC where you have adb.exe
Open up the command prompt from that directory. (hold shift and right click--then choose open command window here)
Then type the command-- adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/
The file with push to your phone and then your can select it and flash it from recovery''.
I see this in another thread, Where can i find adb.exe? Im terrible with computers...
Adb is part of of the platform tools for android. Since you unlocked and flashed a custom rom you should have it on your computer.
If you need it, it is located as an attachment at the bottom of this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34552123&postcount=1
I got the attachment, its called platform tools v16, i dragged and dropped an rom in that platform tools file and after that i dont know what to do...
''Open up the command prompt from that directory. (hold shift and right click--then choose open command window here)
Then type the command-- adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/''
This is what i dont understand.

Extract the files in that .zip into a folder and name it something like "Android."
Move the Rom.zip into that folder as well.
Then do the shift and right click and open the command window pointed to that directory. (as I explained above)
Make sure its connected properly and there isn't a driver issue by typing the command: adb devices. If it returns your serial number you are good to go. (If not, you need to install the correct drivers, which are linked in Section A of the post I linked earlier.)
Then type the command. adb push nameofRom.zip /sdcard/
When i type adb devices i can see my serial number and recovery after it.. when i type ''adb push nameofRom.zip /sdcard/ '' i get a message cannot stat 'nameofRom.zip' No such file or directory
What am i doing wrong?
Edit: hahahaha i see what i do wrong nameofRom.zip
Are you actually typing "nameofrom.zip" ?

You certainly haven't bricked it. The fact you can get to recovery means, you can get to fastboot. Simply open fastboot and reflash stock and be more careful next time
