[Q] Battery Guide Help? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I have a pretty dismal battery life with my Nexus 4, currently on CM 10.1. I'm not completely inexperienced with android and linux and stuff, but I have never ever been able to get the crazy battery life that other people post about. Right now, I might get 8/9 hours, tops, with minimal usage.
I have better battery stats, but I am not sure how to use it and haven't found a guide in my searching so far. I also haven't found a definitive "here's the steps to getting the absolute most out of your battery."
Can anybody help me out? What should I do, from scratch, to get the best battery life possible?
Thanks,

Batter life pre and post root/Midnight ROM 4.2

The Short Version:
Stock froyo downloaded from Samsung's website- My battery would die at work at around 1600, after being unplugged at 0600. We will say it lasted about 10 hours. With minimal usage, with looking at my battery reports my screen was used for maybe 15-20min.
Post root/Midnight ROM 4.2- it is now about 1600 and I have about 90% battery life left with 22min of screen time being used with obviously minimal usage after 10 hours.
Long version:
I was getting fed up with my battery life on my beloved epic and not being able to use it at all. So I decided to do some research and figure out this rooting and ROM flashing business. I KNEW it was not because of the apps and such that sprint blames the poor battery life on because I would monitor that and not use any at all while at work just to see and prove them wrong. I have the same apps installed post root as I did pre root with the same sync settings.
So in other words it is highly depressing that they put so much crap on this phone stock to kill the battery life with not even being used.
I am so happy now, I can actually use my phone without having to worry about being dead in 2 hours.
Thanks for everyone’s help with my flashing question and thanks for this great website as a resource.
Time to try out some different ROMs!
Sounds to be like your phone might of been fighting for a signal or something, maybe a PRL update would of fixed it... I was getting well over a day with the sprint rom.. and now with ACS Rom I get a little better.. but not much..
anyways.. congrats

Battery Sanity

Okay, got my EVO 4G and found that I had the same battery woes that everyone else does. I searched the web and found all of the phone tweaks and settings to improve battery life as I am sure everyone else did. That gave me varying degrees of success. Shortly I discovered rooting and that open a whole new world to me and my phone. Finding out that I could flash roms all by myself was exhilerating and fun. This also helped with my battery life and I now have what I think is a respectable battery life for a phone that will do all the things that an EVO4G will do. The last mod I did to my phone has taken the percentile increments out of the battery icon on the toolbar. Trust me folks this is a good thing and will make life simpler and allow you to move on to more important things. I am no longer a slave to the toolbar to see how much battery life I have left. If you must be able to access the exact percent at anytime, just download an app and go to that. If you feel the urge to check it more than once an hour, simple rub your earlobes and repeat "woosa" over and over again. It will be okay. Let's all do this now, before there is a need for a battery twelve step program. Woosa, woosa.
This is a funny post. I too have found that no percentage in the taskbar = less anxiety.
I enjoy my phone so much more now that have learned how to turn on my EVO Zen mode.
And today I find myself back sliding and tweaking my battery again.
I'd just get another battery, an extended battery for my EVO like the one here.
I may need to do this. I have an extended battery and my battery life has improved considerably but I find myself checking it all the time thinking something is eating my battery and I need to hunt it down and force close it. LOL
I updated to the newest CM7 a few days ago but it was doing all kinds of hinky stuff and my battery life went down to about 7 hours and it was using battery heavily even in airplane mode. I do back ups religiously so I just nanded back to the original CM7 stable and all is well again.

[q] s4 battery.

Hey guys okay, so i think i have learned something about our s4 that you guys might not know. can someone confirm? Okay i have tried multiple roms like slimbean and slimkat and cyanogenmod and a bunch of other GE roms and this is what i realized. I was for sure getting better battery life on my stock rom by FAR i was getting atleast 3 hours of screen on time on the stock rom but all the GE roms i get around 2 hours AND THATS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I really honestly love GE roms they are personally a lot nicer looking and i would like to keep it but the battery life sucks so i dont know if anyone else is experiencing this but if you guys are let me know so im not alone. Maybe its my battery who knows but the phone is only a few months old 2-3 i believe so idk if my battery is disintegrated. My current battery is 12hrs 14min, that sounds impressive right? No the screen on time is 1hr and 50mins and i have 20% left thats more than i usually get its usually dead by now and this is cynagenmod btw the stable version.

[Q] ROM with the best battery life?

Exactly what the title says. I've been looking here and there for some ROMs that I would like to flash and I found quite a number of them to try out. However I want to hear from the experts who have been flashing custom ROMs all the time. What would you say would be the best ROM on battery life? I am currently running Hyperdrive RLS21 and I'll say it does decent on the battery life albeit the standby time can improve (I lose around 10% in a night if I leave it 100% uncharged).

First off battery life is subjective and usually has very little to do with the ROM. It is the kernel and settings which usually have most affect on battery life amongst the same user. This is not something you can compare from user to user but must be compared by the same user under the same conditions.
Let me give you some examples..a heavy gamer will get vastly different battery life from a heavy phone/text user. A person in low signal areas that has many apps synching will get horrible battery life compared to someone who has very little apps or great signal. I think you get the idea.
Kernel settings such as governor/scheduler/OC/UC choices will vastly affect your battery life. You really either need to compare ROMs yourself, or find someone that has compared ROMs under the same situation and similar use as you to get any useful data. I see that you asked for opinions from those flashing many ROMs. Other factors can affect that too...were they all clean flashed? Were any adjustments made?
Hope this helps! And hope you find the perfect ROM for you! Happy Flashing!

Problem is that I'm on a locked bootloader (ATT variant) so it's only natural that I should ask for a ROM that could give the best battery life since I can't flash any kernels
I'm no expert but I've been flashing ROMs for my S2, now my s4 for last 3 years. I've found recently that Tesla has the best battery life, 4% drain over 8 hrs at night. Best ever

S7 Edge Battery Life after root is worse, due to Kernel / CPU usage?

So just before I continue this I want to say that I have Trickster installed and have done all the tips and fixes for root on the phone, and I notice that my battery drains pretty fast when in use.
I just was curious if it's cause of the Verizon version I'm on (before PE1) would anyone be able to tell me their battery life after root and give me any tips other than the ones already posted?
And please if you require more info on my battery stats, please ask, and I'll give you guys whatever you need.
Thanks in Advance.

I went back to stock after having almost all the possible modifications to enhance battery life on root. One small tip is that if you flashed the V15 fix zip, you didn't need to change governor settings manually. Even so, no matter what I did, I could only get to about 3 hours of SOT by the end of the day even without GPS use and all that before the battery is drained. After restoring stock, I'm seeing my usual 4-5 SOT of daily usage.
I'd rather wait to see if root is improved without the high CPU usage because of eng boot, from what I was told. Good luck.
I too have noticed decreased battery life though I can offer no suggestions to fix. I just downloaded a CPU control app to play around with. Right now I am able to get through the day so thats all that really matters, but its definitely decreased from before root.
