So before finding out about this I have already rooted with it and now all of the xda admins are advising not to use this. After a good bit of reading I guess this app has sent www.wmshua.com my imei. It uses their exploit and their patches and makes it seem like they made a root method. This is a deceptive app and I wish I would have never used it. The lest this app developer could have done was change the layout of the program and download all the patches and hosted them himself. Not I fear some conglomerate in China has my imei and will use it at a later date to do a worldwide hack or something. I understand there is no going back so I'll just uninstall the app and hope nothing bad comes from this....

I think that post was before it was questioned that Kingo could contain malware.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
Yea it was. Someone needs to dissect the program, see what info is collected, what is downloaded, and what's transfered to the phone and all that dissected. I don't have hardly any knowledge on how to do this but I'm about to attempt this. I wish I had a whole day and a couple adderall I could dedicate to digging into this.
I'm in no special hurry to root my 9005, so I can happily wait for the next version. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than I can take that *.exe apart and so what load it carries, if any.
In any case caution is a virtue...
Enviado desde mi SM-N9005 mediante Tapatalk
The reason manufacturers and carriers do not like rooting is the security issues. It has nothing to do with them trying to prevent tethering or modifications. With that said any root method not developed and hosted on XDA by a known developer should be used with extreme caution. Exploits are not required to have source posted and it takes a great deal of time and effort to reverse them to see what they do.
I would encourage everyone to make their own decisions on this. I'm keeping my Kingo root, as I contacted them and was satisfied with the response I received. I like open source as much as the next guy, but not every piece of software can be open source. That doesn't mean that the application is malware.
DustinKimble said:
The main reason they were shut down here is because they are being so secretive with their methods and "closed source" doesn't exactly go around here expecially not with root methods. Expecially not with root methods originated from china.

The world's espionage leader right now seems to be the US, not China. AT&T users in particular should consider the most recent apying revelation: NYT:cia-is-said-to-pay-att-for-call-data
So what exactly could they do with said information? There's nothing extra running on our phones after using it to root. Plus its not like they didn't actually supply us with a simple root method. I could understand the concern if it didn't work

I have to agree with you. I'm not even remotely worried about it. The program works.
It scares people on here, so maybe not host it on XDA, but Kingo has their own site.

I understand the fear. Its also interesting that they have a root method for many devices. So maybe they have a reason to not be so open. Maybe they've found the mother of exploits and they don't want it to be closed.
Or with all this talk about how they want to keep root free but pay their devs means they are going to use this super exploit to lock devices and charge people to unlock them in order to use it. Idk I'll wait a day or 2 and see what comes of this whether that's a good idea or not idk. Time will tell. Either way I've got designgears' one click stock on my PC just in case.

If you wanted to be safe, couldn't you just disconnect from the Internet while you root and then reconnect after? Or does it require an active Internet connect to root?

As far as can be seen the information is grabbed and sent during the rooting process which is why it will not work without an active internet connection. Kingo is working on a revision to remove the data collection.
Also note thread cleaned

I just wanted to give my opinion about rooting, I'm sure a lot of people like to do so, but on this device I don't think that you need to, I did a root on my .gs1 because of lag, then my arc needed more then root lol but my sgs 3 so far the best phone that I ever seen, not perfect, but as for lag, battery life, speed its top!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
There a a ton of reasons to root besides lag.
I have an app that requires root that keeps my clock in sync with the actual atomic clock time. The system clock will, over time, be too fast or too slow which means that eventually my phone is a few minutes off.
I have an app that requires root that is used to freeze/quarantine bloatware.
I have an app that requires root that allows me to backup not only my applications, but the application data as well.
I also enjoy root for custom ROMs and kernels that have less lag/stutter than the phone normally does (and yes, this still applies to the Samsung Galaxy S3).
There are always reasons to root.
I understand, I'm not saying not too, for me if the phone is good I'm leaving it stock

Root no >> then no Nandroid and No TB no Ad Blocker . No push apps .

Rooting has absolutely nothing to do with reducing lag or anything at all performance wise.
Rooting just gives you superuser permissions on your device.
Even if you are running an octo core phone with 5gb of ddr3 ram, rooting still offers benefits.

How does being suspicious about a root exploit that popped up on a Chinese site overnight make me blame Chinese hackers for all my problems as normal? I don't blame the Chinese for anything, I would be suspicious of this no matter where it popped up if they went about releasing it the same way. It is always good to be suspicious about root exploits and to look into it instead of just going with it.
You need to take a chill pill and understand that not everyone is badmouthing people all the time, when they posted a warning to ,make people think before they just went with a root exploit and to double check that nothing malicious is being injected along with it.

I can't honestly answer that with 100% certainty, but I used it. The problem that the XDM guys had with kingo was that it collected and sent your IMEI back to there servers. According to kingo they don't use that information, shouldn't have been collecting it to start with and will remove it in a future update.
My experience with them is that I used their support email link to ask about the problem I was having getting root back and received a reply in about two hours. As it turns out, I had already gotten it to work by then, but the guy emailed again to make sure I had verified that Knox hadn't been tripped and to make sure I knew that the status would show "custom". This did not strike me as a person who was trying to steal anything from me or use my info for any malicious means. Why would someone go to that much trouble, or even testing on the first place if they were only out for MEID info. Of course, I've been duped before.

Most antivirus programs will see any root exploit as potentially bad. I think you should do some light reading on how root is obtained, you'll quickly realize it's essentially a virus/exploit. If you are this worried about security you probably shouldn't root anyway.

Ive been rooting since the g1 so I know what root is. My problem is I keep hearing positive and negative about kingo so I'm listening to the community before I make that jump.

I haven't been able to find a straight forward answer to my question.
I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with MF3. This is how it was purchased and I then (only) rooted it.
Will I keep my root access if I take the now available MK2 OTA update and have enabled the SuperSU Pro OTA Survival mode option before I take the OTA?
With all due respect, I dont want to hear about custom roms, ODIN, or anything else that doesn't apply to my direct question.
Thanks!

With all due respect, you will get more (and better) answers in the:Q & A Section rather than the Accessories section.

I was in the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 section and clicked on the add thread button. This was all done using the xda premium ap. Perhaps its poorly designed.
Get a nexus or dont ***** about root and flame xda's app. Or perhaps just go get an iPhone and bother jailbreak nation or some other site.

You might have accidentally clicked something, point of the matter is its in the wrong section, mistakes happen, a simple "oh sorry didn't realize it!" would have sufficed.
As for your issue, I haven't seen any successful or failed update attempts with OTA survival enabled. If you do loose root, you can always simply re-root the firmware update.

The Nexus is as stupid as you are. Why would I ever want a device with no external data storage and a terrible camera? I wouldn't use that junk if it was given to me for free.

Um no it isnt. Not if your into developing and looking for a method to always have root and bootloader unlock, I love my GS4 but this locked bootloader **** is annoying. If we all were unlocked this phone would be hands down better than the nexus 5
