When could we expect to see custom Kernels? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not that I am complaining with what we currently have. I am satisfied with everything about the phone, but there is always room for improvement! I enjoy tweaking everything.
I wish I had the time to devote to learning to develop, but I don't right now. I am happy to try testing to move things along, if that would help the current devs. May just need a Kernel backup in case things go south. lol
Thanks!

Android 2.0 Bounty

I would like to look towards the admins and moderators for guidance on where this should be placed. But I would like to start a bounty on Android 2.0 for the G1. The device has aged gracefully for most of us due to the tireless efforts of the devs here, and I think its time for us, or at least me, to give something back. I am having a hard time even considering a device made by another manufacturer, when ATT 3G bands are available, based on the sole fact that I wouldn't be able to come here and get the hotted builds and customizations.
I would like to start a donation or bounty, most likely through paypal, that anyone could contribute to, to be paid out to the developer that manages to squeeze a usable and feature complete build of 2.0 onto the G1. No I am not quite sure how to decide who wins, but it's just something I would like to see done. I will start of the bounty/donations with a 100USD bid if we can come up with guidelines to follow.
Just a thought..what does everyone else think?
Jubeh dropped a 2.0 rom today. Maxisma, ccyrowski, and cyanogen are all working on 2.0 roms. It sounds like you were thinking it would take an act of god to get 2.0 on the G1. It doesn't. However, the best devs are presently working on it.
Not that bad of an idea. I don't think the dev challenge on the market pays out to any of these custom roms, only apps developed and put on the market. However, I don't know if there is a dev out there that a possible $1,500 will make much of a difference to. I'd think that they would be work on these roms anyway.
Quite the contrary, I know it will happen fast, and I see that only minutes ago a rom was release, but I think we all can agree, no google sync, market, camera, etc..is hardly a fully functional daily driver. It usually takes several iterations of any one rom to get it stable and fully functioning.
Beside that, IMHO, isn't the point, the point was that I wanted to find a way to show my thanks and gratitude to the devs who crank out great software without slapping a pricetag on it. I think that all work should be rewarded, same as the linux projects I contribute too. The G1 is the oldest, slowest device with the least ram...however, I still cling to my precious because of the work thee guys here do, that keep it feeling fresh and as peppy as a spring chicken.
I just thought I might put the idea out to the community, rather than making individual small donations myself to individuals.

Yup, they will crank them out regardless lol. But as a engineer by day, I know those little gift cards and small rewards for excellence from mgmt DO go a long way. As a photographer, consultant, and web designer by nite, those big tips that were necessary go a very very long way.
if you want to donate, donate directly to whichever dev you feel deserves it.
im holding out til cyanogen gets 2.0 running, im sure it wont take him long.
Its already being worked on. Cyanogen would of won this hands down though! ;-)

Yeah. it may just be to late to consider at this point, maybe next time. Cyanogen is a beast, but Jubeh's rom got out the gate pretty fast! I am surprised to see the solid performance without a tremendous amount of kernel hacking.
i dont think this is a good idea... you might end up with dev's spitting out roms that seems complete and good, but because of the rush and competition the quality underneath isnt that great.(i doubt it would happen cause i dont believe android devs would this, but you never know! esepecially if the bounty would become like 100's of dollars)
like that one guy said just donate to whoever you think deserves it. i'd probably split it up.. give a good big portion to cyanogen.. and then all the other devs that help make these awesome mods possible
Waiting for drivers...
At this point we are waiting on new qualcomm drivers to allow hardware accelerated encoding/decoding. We don't quite have all of the piece to the puzzle needed to get a fully functional Eclair build for the ADP1 from AOSP source.
I'm not knocking the idea suggested here. I'm all for donating to your dev of choice. Just letting some of you know why we are in a holding pattern.
It may very well NOT be in the best interest of the community, which is why I put it out there, it sounds like most people thus far don't feel like its a good idea. Whether it's the vocal minority, or a representative majority, is yet to be seen.
Either way, thanks for the update TheGreenJester, my thumbs are already aching with anticipation.
Just let them be. The devs will release these things when it is ready. Don't pressure them. Giving them these huge amounts of donations like a bounty will only give them pressure
Like someone mentioned, putting a significant monetary incentive on release will only cause developers to spit out subpar ROMs. I'm sure Cyanogen and some others could have a more or less functioning ROM out within hours or just a few days, but it would be immensely slow and probably lacking here or there, with an abundance of bugs. It'd be nearly impossible to judge who releases the first "complete" ROM, since there are so many debateable factors comprising "completeness."
Overall, I'm sure the developers are working as quickly as possible to get their ROMs out, so I don't think they need any more incentive. Of course, donations should be made to thank them, but they should be made to different developers from different people. Rather than leave all but one developer with nothing, users should save their money until a ROM is released, and donate to that developer if they believe that ROM is the best. You know, spread the wealth around.
It's a nice thought, but definitely unnecessary.
Besides, I doubt anyone would be willing to send money over to someone with only 18 posts. No offense, but the internet is full of crooks.
what if we made a 4,5,or 6 dev group together to design the 1 big rom and all the donates went to them, not saying all but ive noticed a good bit of donations are based on fanfare. just sayin.
interesting thread

Too many cooks in the kitchen.
People have different styles, different ways of going about things, and it just seems like forcing a couple developers together wouldn't really help. Besides, some variety is good for everyone.
I mean, everyone's been waiting for this update for months; a fully working version by any number of developers is probably no more than a week away, if that. Just have some patience and let the developers do their thing, and then donate when someone comes up with something you like.
No need to disturb the status quo.
Hi,
the idea is not bad, but without HTC drivers it will be not possible to get full working 2.0 build (Camera ... etc).
I think all the devs waiting for the drivers to make stable 2.0 roms.

DEVS and the hard work

I have been lurking here for a couple of months now. Trying different roms initially then flashing different kernels. I don't know much about this stuff at all but want to learn. Hopefully I can start learning some coding soon as well. I love this forum and watching the ways in which all of these different mods, roms, etc grow within the community.
From the beginning I have taken the word (rules) of this forum at face value. I have followed (and agree with) READING THE WIKI's. To me they are indispensable. I have read (yes even the 500+) all of the posts that I am interested in learning about. This patience has paid off! Every time I follow your instructions and search threads for answers to possible issues, everything turns out right.
Finally, I came into this forum not wanting to ask for ETA's. There are so many people here putting there daily lives aside, FOR DONATIONS, for our gratification. To me there is nothing more insulting than asking for something you don't deserve. Be grateful. Think about someone asking you to put hard work (time) into something for you that you may or may not get paid for. Charity can only go so far.
Thanks to all of the devs who put there hours into this. LIFE=TIME....
You obviously don't owe us your time.
Hopefully I can start really learning the languages soon and hopefully start contributing to take some of the weight off you guys.
Great job guys!!!!

Open letter to devs

First of all, thank you for the time you put into creating and development. You guys make things work that stock doesn't, uncover hidden stuff and eliminate them. I used to code many, many years ago and I understand somewhat the effort involved.
I won't ever tell you what you should do with your ROM, whine about a release date, or pretend to make any demands. I'll give you feedback when I try your ROM to help you find bugs.
But just a suggestion... when you post your ROM threads, why not point out what your goals are in the ROM? Some of you do and it's great. But some of you don't... and while I'll try a couple before I decide upon the one that will be my daily driver, I probably won't pick one without goals stated.
Thanks again for everything. This is NOT a flame, nor is it intended to be flame-bait.
I can understand maybe not having a goal at 1.x but by 1.5 or so the said dev that made it has to have the goa/ idea in the back of his head.

I think most developers have the same goal. Speed and stability with battery life.

Our phone is not dead!!!!

*Please no one delete this thread! It is really important!*
Hi everyone!
I am here to tell you guys about our phone.
Yes, the title says everything; our phone is not dead!
What do you think? Just because Huawei is not supporting this phone anymore doesn't mean that our phone is dead!
Look! We have achieved great things with our knowledge! We have already have Android that wasn't given to us by Huawei:
- CM 7.2
- Aurora ICS
- MIUI
- Oxygen
- JokerROM
- and lots of others!
(Thanks to all those developers that have contributed their efforts for the sake of our phone!)
Huawei is not supporting us, but every person in our community is supporting each other.
I know we are lacking developers, but we still have great developers: DZO (he's a bit sleepy), forumber2, Blefish, MosTERRA, ezet, and anyone else I have missed!
We still have developers, but not once have I read anyone commenting anything positive about our phone. Not once anyone has told someone else that our phone is dying/dead. Always, everyone here has said our phone is finished.
Come on guys! Don't say this! Always try to say good things about our phone. By saying bad things about our phone, you are discouraging other people, and most importantly the Developers, from keeping the phone.
Please stop discouraging Developers and others! Instead, encourage others to gather knowledge and start building some ROMs!
Yes, I would encourage all of you here to start gathering knowledge about android and start building some MODs, Themes, ROMs, etc, for our phone!
NEVER AGAIN I WOULD WANT TO SEE A COMMENT THAT SAYS NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT OUR PHONE!!!!
You're right and in general I agree with you but this sub-forum is only to post ROM's preferably tested and without bugs. You should move this to General section or ask to mods to do that. Blefish is working on CM 10 and we (non-developers) need to wait.
Cheers.
to say our phone is "dead" is not negative as i perceive it.. its just a plain fact..
in this fast-changing technology world, our phone already did its job very well..
my u8800 has just passed its 2-year mark, and though its just become my second-line support phone in this month, its still of great value to me..
(big compliment to our great developers!)
HOWEVER, the phones is already over 2 years old, and this is a very old age in technology world (and also considering its lack of official support)..
if everyone just refuses to proceed forward, we are probably still playing/flashing mods for our beloved transistor radio (if thats even possible)!
[edit]
with the above said, i do not mean to discourage any further development effort on this phone..
i actually welcome such activities very much honestly..
its just that ppl should also recognise those of us who try to move forward with newer and more powerful phones..

Our main problem is the just the lack of developers as I already said before, because saying our phones is old fashioned it ain't true, for an example the Huawei Ascend G300, imo that phone is not that far away from our phone in hardware and capability (and also it was release in May of 2012), but still it already has CM9, CM10, CM10.1, thats my point of view, we can't all have the same opinion. I just don't have the skill to do such things in the Android area, if I had I would work on this awesome device.
It's not dead, but it's been on life support for a very long time, now. Blefish is the only active, transparent developer this device has going for, and even he doesn't have public releases yet and encounters numerous issues. There is no real Jellybean for this device, regardless of the fact that the hardware is capable, and so for all intents and purposes it is dead, for the time being. But that could change.
Regardless, this is a terrible thread and if you want to help you shouldn't spam this forum. There are specific forums for this sort of inane garbage.
I think it's dead anymore since we can't go through jellybean. There are only 2 person as i know who have coding knowledge;dzo and blefish.Besides we haven't seen a working wifi for jellybean both of them;so this makes the phone dead,in my view.
i think the points are quite clear now.. in android world, a phone is "dead" if there is not much active development/support for the latest updates going around (either officially or from individuals)..
[edit]
OP, just did a search and found out that u ported a xperia style rom to our phone, so that makes u a developer of this phone.. thx for the work..
(though another GB rom does not interest me that much.. )
I'd like to point out that just because I haven't released a rom does not mean I am not working on it. Just hang on as there is awesome stuff coming up!
I know I am not the fastest developer around, but I always try to do things "properly". Of which I mean I try to provide good code that would be reusable in the future.

No. Our phone will never be dead, as long as we have devs working on it.
I would also like to point out something:
Just because I ported Xperia Style GB ROM, doesn't mean I have become a developer. BUT at least I am trying to build JB for our device. Yes, I have downloaded the CM10 source and have started building it. Since this is the first ever ROM I will build, which is why I am getting help from Blefish (thanks a lot Blefish. I really appreciate your efforts).
I am trying my best to keep this project going, but I have my studies and other important things (won't mention because they are personal). It is my second last year in High School, so I don't get much time (i'm sorry).
I WOULD STILL LIKE TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GATHER KNOWLEDGE AND START BUILDING FOR OUR DEVICE. WE NEED AS MUCH DEVELOPERS AS POSSIBLE WORKING ON THIS DEVICE!
I know gathering the knowledge is hard, but we have the Q&A section where you can ask something whenever you are stuck. Please step forward and start working!
Thanks for understanding.:good:

HD2 is dead and it still has developers.
It's not developing, it's passed on. This phone is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late phone. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If we haven't bought it , it would be pushing up the daisies. It's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-phone. Capisci?

ok i take back my previous recognition of u as a developer.. now you are a developer-to-be for this great phone.. (honestly, no sarcasm attached.. )
and while i think u8800 is dead, u see it as a living pal.. no problem.. case closed.. (no sarcasm, again..)
now back to business.. i would very much be happy to see a jb rom created and surely would give it a try in my u8800..
i just hope u can keep this enthusiasm and keep working on this jb-rom-to-come..
honestly speaking, having enthusiasm on something and start working on it are not that difficult.. its the persistence and patience (in dealing with obstacles) that make the difference..
good luck and hope to hear from u soon.. :good:

Hey,
I just don't understand something so i want to ask you. I am following you on twitter and see that it is really not easy making kernel 3.4. I just want to know, wouldn't it be easier if you just use the 3.0.8 kernel that we already have and maybe tweak it a bit? 3.0.8 should work with CM10. I just don't see the point of triing so hard to make the new kernel for CM10. Let's look in the future and if you release your rom in 2 months for now there will not be so many people that would find it usefull because many of U8800 users are already switching to new devices. And in may there is coming KLP.
Thanks for clarification! :good:

I understand what you are trying to say to Blefish.
I'll tell you. May it be 3.0.8 or 3.1 kernel, the story is the same: no Bluetooth and no WiFi. The 3.0.8 will need to be made compatible with CM10, but making WiFi and Bluetooth work will still won't be easy. That's why it is better to work on 3.1 kernel when you know that both kernels have the same story.
I hope you understand.
My phone is not dead!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok i understand that wifi and bt do not work with 3.0.8 and cm10, but blefish said in one thread that it is just a matter of configuration and is not nearly as hard as making a new kernel. I think blefish could make it work with 3.0.8.

Yes, it is a matter of configuration.
All we have right now are the drivers from Aurora and the drivers from official Huawei ROMs. To make CM10, the drivers need to be taken from an older ROM and put into CM10. Now, it is not just a matter of copy-pasting. Our current drivers are not compatible with JB. Blefish has made some things working. The biggest problem is the WiFi. The old WiFi drivers need to be made compatible with CM10, and this is the hardest part. This is why there has been no one, yet, who has been able to do this.
No matter what kernel it is, may it be 3.0.8 or 3.1, the WiFi drivers need to be made compatible with CM10.
I think oguzhan mobile was able to fix the WiFi to the extent where it actually turned on, but it wouldn't scan. I don't know why he stopped development. I am not sure what kernel oguzhan mobile was using, but I think it was 3.0.8. I think you might be right that it would be easier for our phone to use the 3.0.8 kernel, but I think the 3.1 kernel would run better with CM10.1.
If you really want to know why Blefish wouldn't use 3.0.8 kernel, then you would need to Blefish himself. I have already said what I think, but I am not sure if I am right.
I am going to give it a try with 3.0.8 kernel. It might be easier than 3.1 kernel. I'll just have to find out
I like the way you talk....

[Q] Recommendation a good stable ROM?

Hi,
First of all, I want to start by thanking all the wonderful devs and contributors for keeping this forum an AMAZING place to be a member of. I'm not a very high end user, by no means a flashaholic, but i always come back to this community for knowledge, and consider myself very lucky to have been able have it as a resource for such a long time now.
Anyways, I have been running on the same rom since June and it feels like time for an update. I was just wondering what some of you are currently using, and what you might recommend as a proven rom to be a good long term choice. I don't really need all the most cutting edge features, just looking for something crisp, stable, and with decent battery life.
I had never heard of MF3 before today, but after doing some reading i am pretty sure i want to stay away from it. Not sure if some roms will update me automatically to MF3 but please let me know if that is the case because i am pretty certain i am not on it now, and would prefer not to be.
Thank you as always!

Best ROM is always subjective and because of this, these kinds of threads are not allowed. If you want to know the features of each ROM, check the development and original development forums and read the OPs of each ROM thread to see if it includes what you want. Read a little further into the individual threads and you will see if there are any problems or stability issues. You can check the "pinned" threads in the General section for an easy to navigate list of ROMs and their links also. Good luck.
I have asked this question in the past, and while i know it is not a mod favorite topic, i have never had one closed. Everyone involved was respectful of everyone's work, and it never turned into a pissing contest. There must be more than 50 roms out there between the two boards and for someone who is not so in the loop on the day to day, it could take days to do enough research to weed it down to 3-5 rims to pick between, Surely there is no real harm in asking what people are using and which ones they like?

I agree that there is no harm in asking, but I also think there is harm in thinking that only putting a few days into research is too much. If it takes weeks, it should still be done. It is up to you to educate yourself about the phone and ROMs no matter how long it takes. However, that is just my view, the mods may feel differently. Good luck.

Maybe a different technique would be for you to review the dev threads and see what roms have the most replies. This would give you a starting point of what others are using and if they are having any troubles with those roms.
As scott14719 states, what works for him may not be what best for me and what is best for me may not be good for you.
Even if we did make a suggestion, chances are after you spend some more time reviewing other roms, you will want to try something else.
Make a nandroid, see what looks good to you and test it. If you don't like it, revert to your backup.
Repeat until you find what works best for you.
Good luck!
In your case "Dillsnik" your option dont stop with just the roms you also have the option to flash different kernels.so if you like a rom it can run better/worst on different kernels to.i know its not an answer to your question but it really is a feel type of deal only you can feel for yourself. I took the OTA update to MF3 for a new challenge and its been just that.

Good ROM/Best ROM/What should I flash threads are forbidden. If you're curious about what works and what doesn't, read the OP of any ROM. If the developer has released it, any and all issues will be listed there, along with the proper instructions of how to flash. Try a few, see what you like. Asking others for recommendations generally leads to all the "fanboys" coming out of the woodwork to flame other devs/ROMs.
