I rooted my phone because... - Moto X General

Wanted to start a thread to see why people rooted their phones.
I rooted my Moto x because of the severe volume warning. I like to use a battery bar instead of the stock indicator. I like the crt screen off function in gravity box. I like a reboot menu....sometimes I want to reboot, ok?

I do several things with my rooted phone, but my big 3 that I can't seem to live without.
1. Free Wifi Tethering
2. Uninstalling/Freezing bloatware and Greenifying the rest
3. Backing up app data and games

1. Removal of bloatware and greenify
2. Xposed framework
3. Geek cred

Just a little humor. Coolness factor among fellow geeks.

Finally decided to root, since jcase released post ota root method.
I wanted root to.
1) debloat/greenify
2) allow tasker to toggle GPS
3) xposed framework
4) separate volume controls ie. Separate ring and notification volume.
5) minor tweaks like center clock, battery icon, remove carrier logo etc...

Battery bar? I've been looking for a way (xposed mod?) to get that thin 100% width line to show battery level. Is that what you're talking about?

1 - xposed framework, more specifically XUImod, listview animations and status bar colors
2 - TB
3 - debloat

To fix the wifi icon spacing and remove the carrier label.
to add the pull down quick settings from a right swipe

Strictly to get the idiotic att logo out of my status bar

Yeah, I root, install xposed framework, install gravity box, under status bar tweaks you can disable the battery icon and then install t.e.a.m. battery bar from google play.

Sixaxis app and gravity box for status bar tweaks and adding/rearranging quick settings.

How did you guys get xposed to work. After using rockmymoto xposed says the installation failed because system was read only.
I tried root explorer to remount as r/w but no luck.

I believe you need to go into recovery and set the system r/w, so much easier when your boot loader is unlocked

i believe you have reboot recovery to make system writeable as with pwnmymoto. I haven't gotten this far yet to test. So, power off, hold vol down and power for 5 seconds, choose recovery with vol down, then vol up to select it. system should reboot r/w. hope this helps.

I rooted my phone because I use ad blocker, every once in a while I backup apps when switching ROMs and for some additional functions of Tasker.

You don't need an app, If you're rooted go into your system folder, then edit your build.prop and add the line qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 at the very bottom. Then save and reboot. Your softkeys will be gone. I recommend installing Ultimate Dynamic Navbar after that, because it allows you to set it up to where you can make the softkeys popup through swiping from the bottom edge, and then they go back into hiding.

did this as well but after adding this line "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" it revert back, have you tried this?
some says this is not applicable in official 4.3

qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 works fine for me on stock jwr66v.
GMD hide bar works on rooted stock 4.3.
I'll try to edit the file as mentioned but if it works how to revert to stock? Placing 0 instead of 1? Can't remove the navbat while not knowing how to get it back.

Remove the line altogether. But before adding the line to remove the softkeys, make sure you have an alternate started, like LMT

Phone Crashes After Adding Line to build.prop
I attempted to add the "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" line to my build.prop using Root Explorer and Build Prop Editor and when I reboot my phone constantly shows a message saying that my systemui has stopped working. Then after my phone goes to sleep, it does not turn back on.
Any one know what could be causing this?
I am using PIE through an Xposed module but I keep getting the below message and was told that if I add this line the message will disappear.

3 Razr's - No more maintenance PLEASE!

I've been using my Razr i for a while now and so happy with it that I've recommended my friend and dad get one, they have and I've also got a backup one for business. I want to root and set up each one so that they will not need any more maintenance and have all intended features. Is there a ROM based off the original without the bloat ware? This would probably be the safest, most bug free one I guess? If anyone can recommend which to go for if I just want to do the 3 phones up, give them to their owners and never hear back about bugs or issues because the ROM.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Problems I have with my own:
Roaming nag - every time the data conenction drops while roaming, an acceptance/disclaimer screen pops up even though I've ok'd it 10 times already while in the same country that day.
Mass storage device - Miss having the phone show up as a mass storage device.
Space between numbers - I'm not sure if this is a new thing with the newer androids, a dialler issue or what, but the phone is automatically adding gaps between numbers when I try and save. I've a lot of numbers and prefer to keep them all the same formatting, which is, for example, +353871234567, if somebody rings me, sometimes it comes up as +353871234567 which is grand, other times it might come up as 0871234567 so all I used to need to do was delete the 0 and add a +, now when I edit the number, spaces are automatically added and it shows up something like 087 123 4567. This used to only happen with landline numbers and then sometimes if you tried to delete say the space between 3 and 4, it would delete the space AND the 3!
Winamp notification reappearing - I've been using winamp on my desktop for the past 15 years or so and the app is good on android but even after I close the notification bar item, it sometimes still reappears without me going back to winamp or doing anything. Also, it seems winamp stops playing if there's any kind of shock to the phone, for example if I put it down roughly and it bangs the table a little. If I could stop both of these happening it would be great.
So if there's a way to start from scratch with a clean, bug free ROM that fixes these issues and keeps the phone rooted, that would be great! any feedback appreciated!

I am still on stock rom and have no issues.
Use twerkmymoto by jcase, install xposed and adjust anything you want.

You can disable the Xposed framework from recovery if anything goes wrong.
You just have to flash Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip - it will be on the root of sdcard0.

Problem is I haven't unlocked my bootloader yet so I have no way of flashing this. I installed the older 2.3-beta1 version and it works ok. Really trying to work out how to get rid of the carrier name without unlocking the bootloader though, that's the most irritating for me as it's a really long carrier name. Tried Carrier Name and XBlast Tools.

App Settings [Lollipop Alternative by rovo89] [1]:
This was by far one of my favorite Xposed modules back when I wasn’t running Lollipop, and certainly the one I missed the most. With this baby you can change DPI per app (which allows you to keep whatever DPI you want on the rest of the SystemUI), as well as the application’s font scale, immersive mode, RAM pinning, and insistent notifications for those that don’t want to miss their valentine’s texts (and lose their heads over it).
Xposed GEL Settings [1][2]:
For those fans of the “pure Google experience”, this module can let you further customize your Google Launcher by letting you hide the search bar or individual applications, change grid, icon and text sizes, remove labels and more. It doesn’t make it quite as flexible as Nova, but it’s definitely a good module to have for those that love the Google integration of their launcher, and the cleanness and optimization of it.
RootCloak [1]:
Some apps detect root and either prevent access or limit your features as a preemptive method for security. While it is understandable some might want to further fortify their application, us XDA tinkerers can be left out of services due to this. This module hides root for the apps you choose, simple as that. We can’t specifically tell you what to use this module for, but if you’ve had problems like this before, look no further.
Advanced Power Menu+ [1]: This module lets you customize the power menu of your phone to add or remove items in any order you want. There are extra reboot options (soft boot, recovery boot, bootloader), a screenshot option, a quick-dial to call whoever, some connection toggles and a handy flashlight. I always have advanced power menus on my phones, and an Xposed module alternative is much easier than flashing additional zip’s. If this doesn’t work for you, the new Lollipop Power Menu module might.
XToast [1]:
This was one of my favorites back then, as it lets you add the Toast notification’s app origin into the message box by adding the corresponding app’s icon. That in itself makes it useful, but you can also customize said icon and add the name, or change the toast style back to older versions. The duration, transparency and where it appears also can be chosen. Basically, toasts are at your control to make them more informative and personal. You won’t know how awesome it is until you try it!
Lollipop Notification Ticker [1]:
This one was meant to restore the ticker on the status bar that informed you of the contents of your latest notifications. It was made before Xposed for Lollipop came out, which was a daring move that worked… partially. According to reports, it breaks heads-up notifications alongside fixing the ticker. If you dislike those in the first place, though, you might want to give it a try.
Native Clip board [1]:
Copying and pasting on smartphones was never the most fluid thing, nor the most consistent. This module adds clip-board management straight to the text-selection menu, and it allows you to theme the new menu, black-list apps and further customize it. If you happen to be working on your phone because there’s a document you might need to edit on the bus, this will prove useful.
BootManager :
A must-have to those that want their device to be slim and efficient on boot. This module allows you to select which applications run when you power up your device, and those that don’t get allowed to do so usually stay dormant until you fire them up. If you’ve got a good amount of things that you don’t need right away but are hesitant to greenify, this can alleviate the dilemma of your user experience.

I never used it, but was able to get it setup.
You go into the SuperSU app.
Then settings, disable root, reboot.
Setup android pay.
Then reenable root
Seemed to work for me, but never used it to confirm

Not that it matters since we all know by now that Android Pay doesn't work on rooted phones but I was able to setup cards on my gf rooted G4. Simply disabling SU (didn't even need reboot) and she was able to add her cards.
Of course, she can't actually use Pay....
Google Security Engineer Explains Issues With Root and Android Pay in the XDA Forums
Once Xposed is installed the security model is broken for card addition.
Xposed and root must be removed to install cards.
Once the cards are added.
Xposed can be re-installed and root reactivated.
You then will need to run an Xposed root cloak.
It does work, but once you add Xposed no new cards.

I wonder if this will eventually be detected and continue the cat and mouse game? Probably so. And there's no telling how the game will change once we're running Marshmellow.
Personally, I intended to go into Marshmellow virgin stock. With Marshmellow's app data backup, I won't need the #1 reason I used to root. Titanium Backup. Otherwise, I'm a fan of vanilla Android with the Moto customizations. So no reason for me to root.
I tried root cloak but don't know what I am supposed to do with it. Can someone please tell me why to do? Do I do anything on the opening page? Or, do I hit the + and look for the app.
People say even when hiding root it was always fail during the transaction.

Darn it. I really want to have wallet tap and pay, but I want to keep root way more. I uninstalled Android Pay and the new Wallet and installed Wallet v8. It appears that tap and pay is functional (for now).
I detached Wallet from Google Play, so it shouldn't get updated without my permission. We'll see how this goes. I'll heck it out at the nearest Home Depot tomorrow.
The best place to test is at McDonald's. Theirs is always working. But Home Depots in my area stopped working with Tap and Pay many months ago.

That's right. The Google engineer said all the major checks occur during the transaction. So adding cards really means nothing, if you can't use them...

No more Home Depot, eh? That's too bad. I did notice that Whole Foods updated their registers to remove the tap and pay a year or so ago, too. OK, well, I do like the McD fish sandwiches, and there is one a couple of blocks away, so it is pretty easy to check. Thanks for the info.

i have my phone rooted and xposed installed. I was able to add cards w/ root disabled and am able to may purchases w/ root disabled. it DOES check root on purchase so you have to keep it disabled to use AP.

That seems to fail with others. I wonder if it is store dependant and some are doing something else with security.

Search these forums. A thread on this topic already exists.

I can't seem to find anything useful... Mind enlightening me? Do I have to use a root cloak or something?

Ive been trying for weeks...nothing seems to work...all threads come up with nothing...someone should be able to figure this out
My girlfriend used an app on her rooted s6 to hide root during the initial setup. it allowed her to go through the whole setup. then once it was loaded and working, she unhid root and deleted the app
Mileage may vary, and afterwards, worst case scenario, you may need to reflash supersu in twrp. Not likely though

You can add cards 'rooted' (turn off SU, add card, turn SU back on) but you can't use it to tap and pay

There was/is a big thread on this. Once your phone is rooted, you can't use the phone to tap and pay with Android Pay. Even if you unroot. Confirmed by a Google employee who worked on Android Pay.
See discussion here and here.
I have had it working by using the su program to remove root . then reboot phone. Tap and pay then works. Not sure if everyone had the same results. But this worked for me. When I needed root back i just used su and put it back.

In superSU I just hid root and then I was able to add the cards that were already in my Google wallet account. Haven't tried tap and pay but I can do that tomorrow to confirm. I was afraid that the unlocked bootloader was gonna be a problem beyond the root issue but so far it isn't.

Hide my root will hide the SU binary and allow Android Pay to work but it not only hides the SU it disables ROOT until you unhide it...so any apps that need root will not work while this is hidden. If you hide the SU binary...you have to reboot before android pay will work....tap and pay...not fun...frustrating
