Busted Outer Glass of LCD

Well I dropped my G1 the other day and it busted the outer glass part. The LCD is fine and it still works perfect. I have looked everywhere,with no luck of finding any parts for them. So I called HTC and they told me 150-250 to replace the glass!! So I was wondering if any one know anyone that does G1 Repair or if anyone know of another phone that has more ava. parts for it with a 3.17" Screen? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nope, I got AT&T. Was thinking of taking apart the phone and getting the glass measurements and having a custom cut piece of glass.

I read that the same screen is in use on the iphone 3g, I doubt its true they probably meant type or sumthin, maybe worth a check...
on the old palm pdas you could replace just the glass if the layer under it isn't damaged, this may no longer be possible with these screens, once the bigtime flashing begins there will be lots of bricks available pretty cheap, maybe you should keep an eye out for somebody who pooched the dev bootloader install then after you convince them they killed it you could buy it maybe for less than the HTC price...
gotta say, that sucks if you were a tmob customer you'd have a few options...

Hello. Don't you think It's weird that it happened to me too today?
I've never had a broke phone since my Nokia 8210.
Well, some idiot had placed out one of those kinds of plastic bands you use to seal packages with, a black one.
It was pitch dark and I fell as the plastic ring got snared around my feet. Obviously my Jabra bt3030 got pushed against the screen and it got severely cracked.
My insurance company seems to be covering the whole phone except a small sum. This was from the phone part, but I got to see if I can get something from the health insurance as I hit my head and scratched my hand (though not likely but I can always try)
The touch seems to work most of the time, though it reacts slowly but some times It's just dead.
This really sucks.
I'm dead serious when I'm talking that there was no way that the band could be seen when walking.

It is glass. But you can not simply cut a piece of glass to the same dimension as the touchscreen is integrated into the glass cover. So yes you will need to get a htc or aftermarket replacement part.
The interesting thing is that the repair cost you quoted is identical to the cost of the copay if you go with the Asurion device insurance T-mo offers. So device insurance would just be a waste of money at $5 a month if you end up with broken glass.

Looks like I will just have to hold onto it until aftermarket parts come out. I busted mine by letting it slip out of my hand while talking on it....then it took a 6ft fall to eventually land face first on concrete.....I didnt even wanna pick it up cause i new it was messed up and if it wasnt I was gonna call HTC and give them props! I have a ava. upgrade from AT&T Maybe get a Iphone until this one gets fixed then sale iphone on ebay for 5x wuts its worth.

The iphone's screen seems to crack pretty nice as well.
I hope changing the glass on the G1 isn't as frustrating as on the Iphone.

Cracked screen replacement with compatible HW from third party --when?
I cracked the LCD of my G1 after about three weeks and have noted that neither PPCTechs nor MobileKangaroo have yet acquired a source for the replacement screen.
My understanding is that HTC currently charges what one thread in another forum (http://www.allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4226) quoted as "a minimum of $238.00" to make this repair.
I expect this repair to be offered soon by third parties for about $150, likely using a non-HTC screen product to replace the damaged one.
Has anyone heard any reports about forthcoming availability of such hardware? If so, then are there any non-HTC services to make the replacement?

This waht i found out
so have the same issue and this is what I found out
so from my understanding there are 2 part to the lcd the outer glass touch sensor and the inner lcd. if the the screen is just cracked and you can see the image the u have to replace both. attached are the part descriptions fromt he g1 service manual. and below is a link of a site that sells them, but for some reason they sell the touch scrren with the outer bezel making it cost more. i called htc to order just the touch sensor glass but they said the dont sell replacements, they just fix em

I contacted the seller of the screen and he/she told me that It's only the screen. If the G1 cracks It's the digitizer glass that cracks first. Then if you are unlucky the screen cracks as well. I managed to only crack the digitizer glass. The screen beneath is totally fine. Unfortunately removing the glass from the digitizer plastic was very painful and I managed to wreck the flat cable of the digitizer so that's beyond repair. Now I tried to disassemble the whole phone but I got stuck at removing the housing. First I had problems with the Torx bits. I have some Torx bits in my sets but the lowest I got was T8. I had to buy a cellphone bits set with a lot of different types of bits. It had Torx all the way down to T4. The T5 and T6 was what I needed. There are 4 T5 to remove and one T6. I have inserted the sharp plastic between the housing and the top case and released all hooks but it seems the front and back part of the housing of the phone is dead stuck.
You have to open the whole damn phone from the back to get to the inside of the screen. Why the screen housing uses standard Philips is also beyond me. I have lots of bad experience with standard Philips screws. The heads always get bad after a while of screwing. I have yet to have a problem with Torx.

Finally fixed by Touch HD!!

To make a long story short:
I must have somehow put too much pressure on the digitizer to create a "newton ring" which in turn would not allow me to use the touch feature of the digitizer. I sent it to HTC USA to repair it. They noticed the "newton ring" as well as the modified ROM
They would not warranty the "newton ring" and said they would not repair the Digitizer due to the fact that it had been "hacked". They would replace the Digitizer, LCD and internals for $389.00. I told them they were smoking crack.
After paying HTC $25.00 for doing nothing they sent the phone back and I went online to order a Digitizer. I paid $17.00 which included shipping and I got it within 7 days.
The HTC service manual does not have a guide on how to replace the digitizer or the LCD. They really don't want you messing with it.
It was scary and I thought I had ruined the phone when I pryed the front of the unit open. At first the sticker to the digitizer came off(black framing) and then you have to pry the digitizer(its pretty stiff) from the frame. I destroyed the thin cable that led to the backside of the LCD but the new one has one already attached so I wasn't worried about that part. The LCD with a metal base plate is attached to the back of it. You have to slowly pry off the LCD from the backside of the digitizer.
Anyways I have assembled it back and everything is working perfectly. It was doing Micro-Surgery at times.
Just wanted to share my story.

How did you attach the digitizer to the LCD? Aren't they glued together or something like that?
Because that's where my attempt went terribly wrong: Instead of getting the digitizer off my LCD, I broke my LCD... I bought a new complete screen unit because I didn't know how the LCD is attached to the digitizer!

The digitizer is semi-glued to the LCD panel which sits on the back along with the thin metal cover. The digitizer has a thin flat connector that connects to the back of the main board on the bottom. I slowly pryed off the LCD(grayish white in color) from the back of the Digitizer. It came off and I aligned it back up with the new digitizer and the glue residue left over from the LCD adhered to the rear of the new Digitizer. the tricky part is the thin connectors that attach to the mainboard. You have to get a pair of tweezers to pull it from the flat connector. When you get the digitizer you will see the new connector. Attaching that and the prying of the LCD was the hard part.
I read somewhere some guy said he broke the LCD but in truth it wasn't the LCD that he broke. He pryed apart the 3 layers of the Digitizer and thought he ruined the LCD. I thought the same thing orignally then I when the whole LCD/Digitizer was in my hand I was looking realized that the LCD was the grayish/white panel on the back. One can easily peel away the top 2 layers of the digitizer and would think that it could be the LCD they ruined.
I hope that makes sense. It was the first time I did this and I didn't see the video where someone removed the Screen. I only saw the Russian guy who didn't finish the job because he was stuck at the end. I just figured it out the hard way.
Also the T6 works but I think a t5 would be better. I only had a T6 and it did the job.
I am so glad I wore gloves or I would have had some major finger prints all over the unit

Thank you for your explanation! But I'm still not going to attempt this on my own any time soon... We'll see... Maybe I'll change my mind if my digitizer is broken or scratched...

Respect man! You mentioned that you bought digitizer for $17. Is it possible to buy mainboard for Touch HD from that place? Can you please advise where I can get it. And how much it will be?

Got to love a bit of micro-electronics DIY!

This just shows that HTC are taking people for a ride - there are a lot of people who would have just paid the price they stated. As you've only replaced the digitizer, shows they were taking the mick with the LCD and otherwise, what are these "internals" that HTC said it needed I wonder...??

Just replaced the digitizer on my HD and it took about 1.5hrs. As long as you're very careful, it's not that hard at all.
Make sure you have the Service Manual though as it was a great help.

Ive just had to order a Digitizer as my phone has decided it doesnt want to work anymore (6 months to go on contract too ffs).
Managed to get one from a UK seller with tools for £17 so im happy.

How did you get the digitizer separated from the LCD?
I was thinking of putting two suction cups (1 on the back of the LCD, and the other on the front of the digitizer), heating everything up for a couple of minutes with a heat gun, and then pulling them apart holding the suction cups.
Does that make sense?

i just had mines fixed called them told them wat i did that i found an outer sreen and tryed to replace it myself and completely destroyed the lil black screen inside of the 4screens put together and that my device software was moded now i had 469 out going and another 469 incoming calls they only charged me 113 but wen we first talked about it they did say about 350 until they see the device and then they will call you before the repair it but the did wipe out my device and reinstalled the oem rom they also gave me a full new body and zero'ed out the incoming and out going calls which never changest unless they put in a new mother board which makes my phone brand new

sorry if ive missed it, but how do you get the lcd and digi out from the black outer casing frame to start with ??, from what i can see it comes out by somehow pushing from the inside to make it pop out ?? could someone please explain a little bit more on how to do this, ill try and make a vid of me getting it out as i have yet to find one that shows this, also my screen has that wierd pearl essance look to it?? does this mean its the digitiser.

Mine had that pearl essence look to it for a good few months before it broke, not that im sure that has anything to do with it.
Just awaiting the delivery of the digitizer and hopefully I can repair it.

yeh mine had the pearl effect for a long time prior to it dyeing

ive followed the service manual and the video of the guy who gets stuck near the end, but how do you g et the screen out of the casing to get to the digitizer?
Its one hell of atight fit and i cant see anything o bvious.

Sorry about the late replies - had phoneline probs!!
Assuming you followed the instructions in the Service Manual to take the rest of the phone apart, you've just gotta be VERY careful and push the screen out from the back (where the Circuit Boards where) of the plastic frame. At first, it feels like it's not budging but be patient and it WILL start to push away.
It seems to be held in with some sort of hot glue or maybe a contact sort of adhesive and I didn't try it but some heat from something like a hair dryer may make the job easier.
Many people have cracked their LCD screen during the repair but as long as you're careful not to bend the screen too much when taking it out, you'll be fine.
I peeled the 3 layers (outer glass ones and then the Digitizer itself) off the LCD whilst removing it.
Good luck - it's really not that hard. Any more questions - just ask ;-)

ive got the phone apart to the point of the service manual/video
which part of the back do you push out? doesnt look obvious as to whats attached and what isnt

Once you get to the last stage (I thinks it's the Speaker Removal) you simply push on the metal protector of the LCD from the back. You will see small holes in the plastic of the back of the frame where you can push something blunt through and push very lightly on the LCD to push it out.
If I remember correctly, at the bottom of the phone where the circuit board with the vibrator and microphone on it was sitting, there is quite a large opening with the metal backing of the LCD visible through it. I started pushing there and gently went all around the phone in the various small holes dotted around it.
As I said above, it won't feel like it's working at first but it will - just be patient and not too heavy handed!

Shattered / Cracked Gorilla Glass...what to do??

I just got my DVP a few days ago...
Today I dropped it (the first time it dropped) and it shattered the glass...
everything works fine still...it is just so ugly I would like to get it fixed...
What can I do?
I cannot find any replacement parts, I cannot find any repair shops for this phone also... currently I am on hold trying to call dell (hopefully they give me good news?)....
I am lost and disappointed -I cant believe I cracked it esp. this soon!..
well I am asking for your advice / comments / help on this one, XDA ...
please advise me...
UPDATE: dell said it would be 249.99 to get a replacement phone...
good deal? or should I just get another phone or something? I am thinking of going through with it to get it done, but if there are cheaper options I am interested...

Did you try checking with @dellcares on Twitter? Someone had a similar issue the other day and said @dellcares helped them. Not sure exactly what the outcome was, but worth a shot.

no, but dell charged me 249.99 to send me a replacement device...
they told me that a cracked screen is considered to be out of warranty (I think it also includes any physical damage as well...not sure about that part though)...

you're lucky then. They sent me a copy of the posting on their community forums telling me its absolutely not covered. I could replace my 16g device...for $499.00. But they would throw in free over night shipping.

While it sucks, I think it's hard to argue with this stance unless people start to report widespread screen cracks. I've dropped mine a couple of times and no problems (~knock on wood~) and I have not read about a rampant issue with screen fragility, so at the moment it sounds like you were just damned unlucky.

My phone just fell at the train station and the freaking screen cracked. Damn. I called T-Mobile . .The rep at first didn't even know what it was and asked if it was a tablet. Put me on hold for over 10 mins then asked me to call Asurion and see what they said.
Asurion rep put me on hold for about 5 mins and then said it wasn't a supported phone.
I then called Dell Mobility. Lady told me $249 for a replacement. wow! I told her I'd think about it. Though it's half the cost I could get an HD7 straight from T-Mobile for less than $100 with contract renewal

Hi, so i had a similar situation this past week and I wanted to find out if you were able to purchase and replace the screen? Got the same $249.99 replacement quote from dell (even though you can purchase a new one for $300 from dell).

Scratch Resistant NOT shatter proof. Accept this now before something happens and you wind up butthurt.

you guys should get a warranty from squaretrade. they cover shattered screens and liquid immersion and are pretty cheap compared to an extended warranty from dell.

I had a similar situation - wife dropped and our small son stepped on her Venue Pro, cracking the upper right corner of the gorilla glass. The phone still worked fine, even in the impacted area -- it just looked ugly and glass continue to chip off. Dell offered to replace it for $250.
I found the replacement glass from the below site, ordered it and it took about 2 months to arrive (they were out of stock initially).

I successfully swapped out the glass today and it was tedious being careful not to break anything and lose parts, but not too bad if you're patient - it took me about an hour. Remove the backing and battery and there are 6 black screws to remove (one was covered by a white sticker for me). I just used my finger nail to go around the edge of the lower housing (not LCD) until I was able to wiggle and eventually pop it free (be gentle, don't force it). Then extend the slider so the keyboard is exposed. Rotate 90 degrees from the lower housing you separated from, being careful not to damage the cables that attach the LCD to the lower housing. There are then 4 screws that secure the digitizer / glass to the LCD and slider housing. Two you can see internally once you rotate 90 degrees as above. The other two are always visible with the slider extended (keyboard visible) but they're under 2 black stickers at the top of the screen on the back. I just used a push pin under the edges to pop off the stickers. After removing these 4 screws, again I used my finger nail working my way around to pop off and remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD and slider housing. Once free, there is a single cable connection to remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD. Check the replacement glass as a guide for where these last 4 screws are and where the cable connects (top of the screen near the speaker). The cable just pops on / off.
Ensure you clean the underside of your new screen and the LCD is free of dust / debris / fingerprints before reassembling! Snap on the glass to the LCD / slider housing and install those 4 screws first, then rotate back 90 degrees to pop on the lower housing and then finally re-install those 6 screws. Mine fired right back up and works fine...I was a little nervous with potential damage to the exposed cables and separating the housings, but it turned out fine.

I just replaced mine last night. A bit heart stopping at times as there are a lot of fragile cables and little thingst that can fall out but if you have a good light, a small star-shaped screwdriver, and patience, you can do it. I bought the glass from an EBAY seller in china. Took less than 14 days to arrive and the cost was a lot cheaper than the UK seller you see in the posting (I paid like $74, with shipping). My DVP looks new now. I tooks some pictures as I was taking the thing appart and will try and post later.

I've managed to get some serious scratches on my Gorilla Glass and I've no idea how I've done it as I am always incredibly careful with my phone.
How do you know it pops out easily? Did you see it somewhere? I'd like to see how easy it is to remove and replace before attempting it myself.

I shattered the front glass on my DVP and bought a replacement on Ebay from a seller in Hong Kong. I watched a youtube video and managed to take the phone apart and replace the screen successfully. If you do this, be warned that there a few pieces that are not attached to the motherboard that will just fall out. Be sure to notice where they came from. For me, a little board running the on/off button and the camera lens fell out. It was easy to put them back in their place. HOWEVER........
Everything works now except I see the letters "ENU" up near the clock, and the virtual keyboard will not appear. Do you think this means the phone thinks the keyboard slider is out because of something I screwed with while the phone was apart?
I just installed the Mango 8107.79 update, and the keyboard still will not appear. So I know its not a bug. The EM app (you get after pressing qwertyuiop and doing the "man machine interface test") is telling me the slider is open when its not.
What does ENU mean? Just be careful if you replace your own screen!!

ENU means that the next letter you type is going to be upper case.

Yes, I think you are probably correct.
Mine says 'ENG', so I would guess it represents the language. 'ENU' is probably English - United States. The code seems to appear when the physical keyboard is pulled out. (It doesn't seem to be visible when using just the on-screen keyboard).

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I guess I'll take it apart again and see if I can figure out why the keyboard is stuck in pulled-out-mode. I feel guilty now, because I just bought a Lumia 710 to replace my DVP, but the display is nowhere as beautiful. The Dell really is a great product....

[Q] Replacing glass - to LOCA or not

I picked up a cracked glass/working LCD S4 for $100. I've ordered replacement glass and watched several videos of the process and I've done this kind of thing before (careful delicate work with electronics that is.) Phone works fine, just the glass is cracked - but touch, lcd and all features seem ok.
The only aspect I'm unsure of is whether I really need to re-glue the new glass using something like this: LCD Glue
It sounds like a lot of people have just done the glass, no new glue and heated the phone slightly afterwards to re-adhere the tape. I'd rather not use new glue if I don't have to - looks like a messy step and one that could easily go wrong with too much glue and I don't have a UV curing light so that'd add to my cost of doing this.
Does anyone have firsthand experience with a phone whose glass has been successfully replaced either with or without new glue?

Loca is about the closest your gonna get to a oem experience, but if I was you, I would pay Samsung to fix the display.

I've completed the operation without adhesive and it was largely a success but there's a small bubble spot on the display. I like it better than the cracked glass but it's not perfect. I've got an S4 for slightly over $100 - even if I just have an S4 with a spot for $115, I can live with that. And I may redo it and use adhesive. I just got it because it was cheap - I have a Note 2 I'm still quite happy with and don't intend to switch over. If I pay Samsung for anything, it'll be a Note 3.
Considering how I felt part way through getting the glass off - I was fairly sure I'd destroyed it - I'm very happy with the result.

That's great glad you had some success!

This is from my personal experience with replacing glass on my S3.
1) replaced JUST the outer glass and all was well with how the phone worked. With just replacing the glass there were a couple cons to it. First con was it was VERY HARD/almost impossible to see anything on the screen when out in the sun. Second con was that you would either have what looked like a bubble under the glass. This was caused because the glass was touching part of the lcd and would look like it was wet in the middle of the phone. When you press on the screen the WET LOOK got worse. But heck for the $20 I spent on the new outer glass I had a functioning phone. Third the outer screen is now not sealed and you can get dust/debris/liquid in between the glass and lcd which in time will look bad.
Now onto the SECOND TIME I broke my glass on my S3. I used LOCA that cured using Uva light. Well it looked great but I did not have a Uva lamp with me at the time when I did it and the sunlight didn't cure it fast enough. So the phone LOOKED and WORKED perfectly like it was brand new for a few days . Then my lcd stopped working. Pulled phone completely apart and found that the uncured LOCA had made it in between the lcd and the electronics part if the phone and shorted it out. So this is where I went wrong and LEARNED from it.
LOCA is great and I would recommend it with these instructions. 1. Before applying LOCA remove EVERYTHING from the phone. And I mean everything. So you only have the front glass, lcd, frame/bezel. This is very easy to do and only held together with 10 or so screws. Then use LOCA and MAKE SURE to have a UVA LAMP on hand before attempting. Once it is full cured with the lamp (only takes a few minutes under the Uva lamp to fully cure) then you can reassemble the phone and it will be like brand new. Still for only about the price of $50 for the outer glass and LOCA.
Read in the ATT S3 forums and you can learn a lot before attempting it. You will see where things can go wrong and where things go right. I was one of the first guinea pigs to test out the LOCA and after making my mistakes other learned and we're able to complete it correctly.
When my lcd went out I just bought the S4. Finally I recently bought a lcd with a cracked outer glass, new outer glass, and already had some local still. Now my S3 looks brand new again and functions perfectly.

LOCA, 2mm double sided tape and a UV Light on the way. Even with all that my cost on the phone isn't bad. And I can cure nail polish too!
I do plan to remove as much as I can from the phone to prevent the glue shorting anything.

Well the patient lived but he isn't entirely his out of the box brand new self...
I did remove the mid-frame and motherboard and I'm glad I did because if I hadn't, I'd have had adhesive in between the mid-frame and display assembly I suspect. I didn't use enough adhesive at first so before curing it, I pulled the glass back off and put more adhesive in. When I did this, it introduced a few bubbles and worst of all, some adhesive got up where it's barely obstructing the front facing camera. It still notices when you wave your hands at it and I haven't played with it a lot yet.
I didn't fully understand how LOCA cures - you can hit it with UV for a few seconds and it sort of "pre-cures" and then wipe away excess and whatnot. I didn't do that, put the UV on and left it curing the excess and gluing the phone to the bench with adhesive than ran out lol. A bit of scraping and clipping later I got it unstuck and cleaned up but had I just pre-cured, wiped up, then long cured it'd have been better.
Not unhappy considering it had broken glass, now it doesn't and it looks decent and is functional and I don't have much $ in it for having an S4 to play with!
Update: I took the phone apart again and removed the front facing camera and did a little cleanup with acetone & some q-tips. Front facing camera is now fine. Only diff between this phone & stock/new is there are several bubbles - but several bubbles is a hell of a lot better than broken glass! Touch is very responsive and contrast looks great.

Something else to watch for......
On larger phones, like Note etc. LOCA glue is NOT an option! If you don't use it,you will almost certainly have problems with the touch sensor. Part of the glass will touch the sensor, usually near the middle of the screen. This will cause all kinds of random behavior and can even cause the phone to appear to lock up or freeze.

Anyone gone through front glass replacement?

Recently got a GS5 and my mom doesn't have a phone right now so I'm handing my N4 down to her. The front glass is cracked and I wanted to get that fixed before I do. The digitizer and lcd are not broken, just the glass, everything else looks and functions fine. I guess what my question is, if I take it to a repair shop can they just replace the front glass or am I looking at around 100ish to replace it all? I'll be going in and getting quoted but just wanted to see if I got any input from here first, it will likely be a week or so before I take it anywhere due to this damn weather.

The same thing happened with my friends N4. The glass, digitizer and LCD all had to be replaced as they all come as one unit. Cannot get them separately.

Amazon/ebay has parts where you can just order the LCD/Digitizer etc, but then to separate them you have to have a heat gun etc. if you touch any part by mistake you will get finger prints or smudges permanently. Sure they do. FYI, the "glass" is[ the digitizer. If "everything works", then technically all that needs replacing is the digitizer.
However, digitizer replacement is far from an easy thing to do. Not only does it require some specialist equipment (suction cups, heat gun, glue), you're probably going to screw it up unless you've done it before.

You can buy just the screen assembly off eBay for about $45, which has the digitizer already mated with the LCD. However, this requires removal from the bezel (again, a heat gun is recommended), then gluing the new one back in. For $60 you can get the entire front assembly (hey, brand new phone!), which is the easiest way to go about things. I'd also recommend buying a new battery ($20) and replacing the old, tired one while you've got the phone apart.
It's not all that difficult to do it yourself. You'll need a T5 TORX driver, something thin, sturdy and plastic to pry the phone halves apart (you can buy screen assemblies that come with all these tools), and some patience. Do everything on a fluffy white towel so the little screws don't get lost. The tricky part is the little rubber gasket thingy that goes over the proximity/light sensor module. Most people who have done a screen replacement have found that reassembly screws up the prox sensor, causing it to always read "near" (meaning during a call the screen will stay off and you can't hang up or use the dialer). The common fix is to put the gasket in backwards.
There are a number of threads here, some youtube videos, and a good teardown tutorial on ifixit.com.

I thought the digitizer was what recognized touch input? Either way I don't think I'll be doing any of this work myself, I'll just take it up somewhere for her for the repairs.

It is. It's built into the front panel of glass (which is made up of a bunch of different layers of stuff). Don't ask me how it works, it's all magic to me. But when you break the front glass, yet everything still works, that's the digitizer. If you look up digitizers on eBay you'll see that it's the front glass panel, with a cable and other electronic stuff attatched.
Either way I don't think I'll be doing any of this work myself, I'll just take it up somewhere for her for the repairs.

It's honestly not all that difficult to do yourself. Hell, send me the phone and screen assembly, and I'll do it for free. Seriously. I'll even through in a couple TPU cases I'm not using.
If you do take it somewhere for repairs, make sure you ask what they're doing. Replacing the screen assembly, or replacing the digitizer. For a $100 fee, it could be either. They could buy a $20 digitizer and the remaining $80 is in labor, but it'll take them a lot of time and effort, or it could be a $45/$60 screen assembly that takes far less time and effort to do. Personally, it costing the same, I'd rather have the screen assembly replaced, since replacing only the digitizer can lead to complications. Since it has to be reglued onto the LCD, you might get bubbles, dust/lint, dead spots, and that rainbow affect when you hold it in the light at the right angle.
