[Q] Storage usage affect on phone performance - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am getting a new phone next week after 3 years of using an iphone 4. I like to watch alot of movies, and was deciding if I should get this phone, but I was concerned about the storage. I know you get nearly 25GB of actual storage in this phone and I was wondering if I should use most of that storage for movies leaving a small amount of space left over, would this slow down the phone as a whole and make it lag? I read somewhere that you are supposed to leave a certain amount of storage space free for optimal phone performance. Just wondering if that was the case with this phone.

Just grab a usb otg and store your movies on a flash drive. Personally im usinga 32g imation nano pro because of its size.

[Q] 8GB or 16GB help

Please help me choose between the 8 or 16 model. I really don't think I will need the 16GB Nexus for I will use it for but I also d o not know what type of storage is left on a stock device.
It will mostly be used to stream movies / TV shows from my home server with the occasional game. I enjoy games but have found tablet gaming lacking to me, so I find myself installing games but then deleting them. I do like to tinker so I doubt I will stay with ta stock rom but would assume most are going to be AOSP.
Thanks for the help.
Here's my 2 cents...i regret getting the 8.i have 1.3 gb left, and i have no music or movies, or books for that matter. It's just apps. I have one large games, 1.3gb, the rest are small apps. I don't remember the last time i had to worry about storage. It sucks. I love the tablet though.

I head somewhere that the 8GB model come with less than 6GB free (IF im not wrong).

OS takes up about 2GB. So you'll have about 6GB out of the box. I guess some people can get by with the 8GB model, but it may be awfully tight.
It kinda sucks to have to pay $50 more for 8GB more, but I think it's worth it.
The thing these guys are missing is that you can attach a usb stick of whatever size you like to the N7 via an otg cable, ok you can't run apps from it but you can keep music, books, videos etc there. 16Gb is always going to be better but it's not so much of a problem now if you go for the 8Gb unless you really want tonnes of apps on it at once.

Couple of nice games and you're begging for more space. I am easily taking 10 GB with my apps alone.
Definitely 16 GB. I'll sell mine to you. I hardly ever use it.

16gb. The 8 GB only really has 5 GB left for the user anyway vs 13 on the 16. Thats a big difference.

I'm amazed how fast apps take up space so glad I went for the 16gb, a few large games and you won't have much storage left on the 8gb.
As for connecting memory sticks, yeah its a nice option to have, but not always good to have to carry memory stick + on the go USB cable around with me.

It really depends what you do with your tablet. I have the 8 Gig but for me that is enough. I have all the apps I use installed and still have 5 Gig free but I only use it to check my mail or Facebook and the occasional Skype call or a few smaller games and to surf the web. For me 50 buck for 8 more Gig was not worth it but for someone else the 16 Gig may be the way to go.
Depends what you want to use it for. I dont really play any of these big games on mine because the controls are garbage. I got like 20 games on here, few of them being gameloft and ea games, i have all the apps i need. Not much music or movies stored locally, i use an app Vkontakte for music streaming and google drive for everything i might need. I have access to internet all day, so if you think you will want to store a lot of content locally, get the 16, if not, get the 8

I was fine until this five day all sale started. Now I'm going to 3-4gb in apps alone and I've had the tablet like two weeks. But a used 16gb one so you don't need to worry. I have a otg cable coming too for my car rides home when I need music and can't stream because the middle of pa is nothingness.

Have to agree, I got the 8GB version, and bought a 32GB flash drive and an OTG cable with the difference with change to spare. All my music, movies and things go on the flash cable. The 6.5-7GB left out of the box is plenty for me to run any apps, games and anything else. Only downside I do see is the problem that when OTG cable is plugged in, you cannot connect to charger.

I used to think I wouldn't need the 16GB Nexus. But with Google's recent sale.. I somewhat regret just going for the 8GB model
Go for the 16GB
I have a 8GB Nexus 7 and regret buying it for lack of any credible storage. It offers only 6GB storage. This can accommodate 2 large games, few applications. However, even in this you will face issues upgrading a game, as it wont have enough storage space to download a update file. So please go for 16GB version, if you plan to have even 2 large games on your Nexus 7. Further, you wont have space for your occasional, movies, music for use on the move.

Did well. Because u can resell later at higher price.... On ebay... Or else. And u can install anything you want.... And have a super tablet with lot of software, pic and music... Even a few movies for travel.

Is 16gb sufficient memory for the nexus 7 or should I wait for the 32gb!!!!!!

16gb is fine as you have cloud storage also usb storage with OTG cable
I think 16GB plenty, hell, even 8GB is plenty for me as long as you're not keeping local media on the device.
I'm getting the 16 but that's all Walmart had, I'm a cloud whore.
16 is definitely not enough..google should have came out with 16 on low end and 32 on high end in the first place..16 is just barely enough for songs+2 games+ backup
The actual memory is only about 13gb which kind of worries me as I want to play alot of games!!

That's how I feel about it.
I don't even see the purpose of stocking the tablet full of movies either.

i think 16gb is plenty. i have 0 movies and 0 songs though. Documents or anything similar is either on skydrive or another cloud service. i use my tablet to read comic books and once i read a complete series, i delete it right away.
and it does suck that it's really only about 13gb total, but i still have around 10 gbs left.

That is probably because they reserve that other space for when you do a factory reset and it reinstalls all the Google apps that it initially came installed with.
It really depends on what he is planning to use his tablet for. Most HD games now make you download gigs worth of data just look at 'the bards tale' 1.5gb for normal and 3.5gb for HD and Horn just to name a few.
.mkv movies are also huge limiting you to only a handful at a time. Sure there's cloud storage, but the N7 doesn't come 3G enable (yet) so its reliant on a WiFi connection.
Basically you need to ask yourself what the tablet will be primarily doing? Gaming, movies, trolling, or all three? It all depends.

It will be mainly used for gaming and movies and some internet browsing!!!
I'm cool with 16 gigs. I have a USB OTG cable for my 32gig flash drive. I use Dropbox for cloud storage I have a ton of apps on my N7. I don't keep music or movies on it as they take up so much space. I prefer useing my OTG cable for those.
like my others devices,16 gb are too low.yes,i know the clouds and similar things, but here in italy we have indecent speed with carrier operator and wifi isn't so common out home (and where there is,it's wpa locked).i can't store my music in cloud (google play music is a nogo in italy)i can't sore my pics in cloud due to the fact there are more possibilities i'm in a place where i haven't signal on my phone (for tethering)and wireless out there..in this case clouds are more than useless.and to end,it's always better have all in the storage, less battery and data consumption without always using the web to connect with clouds via tether or wifi.this,it's the only thing that i hate in the google's last year ideas.don't get me wrong,i have 3 nexus devices, but with only 16gb storage a lack of microsd is real for me. (and not speaking to the fact of sell only 16gb versions always in ita\europe,like they did with gnex, the gsm model haven't the 32gb storage)
Also without store musics and others stuffs,3\4 hd games and 200 apps installed gets the tab full.

16gb is fine for me but if they do release one with more storage then I'll just give this to the wife and buy the new one.
I'd say look for a 16GB on craigslist now. If you don't find one for a decent price, you can wait.
If you do find one, you can turn around and sell it once [or if] the 32GB releases.
I purchased the 8Gb version
I use cloud storage for everything, have downloaded lots of games (obviously not those over 1Gb..), and still have the chance to use external cards for movies and everything. Dropbox, Drive, Minus, Box, SugarSync, ActiveSync gives you lots of room. With Jukebox you can manage and hear your music. There are free cloud storage services for movies as well..
I feel like I don't need more room within, and still have 4,5Gb left. I hear music, see movies.. edit documents, share them,..
If you move with today's technology, you will soon notice that Google designed the 8Gb unit and considered initially to be its best seller because they took into account the cloud storage facilities we have nowdays
They have been caught with surprise that people request the 16Gb and now the 32Gb. We ask, they delivery..
But I move confidently and are happy with my 8Gb unit..
This does not means that I recommend you the 8Gb over the 16Gb unit, but you can take into account this information to take a decission.
I bought a 16 GB N7 and for me it's enough.
I have 11,22 GB still available and I've no idea how to fill that space!
I bought the 16 and it is almost full. I had no such problems on my 32gb touchpad. If you want to play a lot of games or have a lot of media on your device it isn't going to work for you. Cloud storage is a lame excuse when it's a wifi onlu device plus most high end games require 1-2gb. If you don't plan on doing these things 16 will work fine. 8gb is really too small for most things.

[Q] [Answered] 16 GB Model + Cloud Storage / External HDD Enough?

Is there anyone who has a 16GB version of the Nexus or has had a 16GB tablet who can comment on the space availability?
Things I will be using the tablet for are mostly education related -- jotting notes on PDFs, web browsing, email, and likely occasional netflix/movie streaming. Was thinking maybe a few games simply because I don't want to waste the resolution abilities of the tablet, might be nice to game once in a while.
I was concerned about the size of apps overall taking up space, but I was also wondering if there are ways to attach external HDDs to the nexus? I was thinking that with cloud storage, 16GB would be enough but would like to ask the community what their experience was...
Thanks

I just did a clean wipe and checked my space. It was at 13GB (before any app installs)
For your needs you should do just fine with a 16gb. And yes, you can use usb storage options such as lash drives.
I have the 16gb and while it's mostly for surfing the web, i have about 15 games installed, about 20 apps, 2 whole tv series (not in HD as they are cartoon/animation so no need) and a failm that is about 2.5gb, and some music. I've still 2gb+ left and almost 9gb of the used space is media which can always be replaced or removed. Even for media use, my tablet is a home tablet that will ocassionally be taken out and about, with foresight, but if it's one that you want to take out and about and keep out and about, then you might want either the 32gb or more economically a simple OTG cable and flash drive/sd card and reader.
Thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered the 16 GB model. I just figured between cloud storage and managing my media files I should be fine. My HTC One X has 16 GB of storage and I haven't had any problems with space. Really looking forward to my first tablet!
I also have a 16gb and I think its fine. Also have otg cable and elago 32gb microsd for movies, etc....

You should be aware that external storage via an OTG cable will only work using an app like this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=en
If you want to use the extra storage in the same way you would use the internal storage, you will need to root the device. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001868

No SDcard... is it really that big of a deal...

So I see this conversation taking over a few other threads. I am not trying to play clean up I just think we need a thread for it since it is a heated debate.
So no SD card... What to do... some say online storage and others say OTG.
I currently use both. I am on Sprint and running the Epic 4G Touch. I am lucky enough to be on a WiMax area so I can take advantage of the unlimited data that Sprint offers. But even with that I still use OTG.
If I take some pics and vids I usually start putting them on Picasa and Youtube pretty fast. This keeps my internal 14Gb memory a little more open for new pics and vids. I have an 8Gb SDcard and it is full of music. to this date I have only ever ran out of space once and I was shooting a 30 min HD movie on top of what I had not cleared off. I then started carrying a 32gig USB stick to help alleviate the lack of space but even that can get cramped so I have a 500Gb 2.5" hard drive and it works very well so far.
The other thing I have done, because we all know that Youtube recompresses your video's, was setup an Android on a stick TV device with an FTP server. Attached to that guy it a couple 1Tb harddrives. I can throw my vids up there as well when in a crunch.
As you can see there are lots of options to replace a missing SDcard slot that can only ad 32Gb of space unless the company paid the extra buck to allow 64Gb. That to me is still limited and I find it just as easy to OTG some movies off and on my phone as the USB sticks are easier to manage than opening my phone up to remove the Micro SDcard and put it into a USB adapter.
Again this is not a deal breaker for me as there are far to many options to a SDcard and some are way more convenient.
No SD is not really a problem for me, though a 64gb version of the handset would have been welcome, to many others aswell. I know one is due to be coming to the uk but not soon enough for some.
Not an issue for me as I have very little music/pictures on my phone and just apps.
USB OTG is more than enough for me

I really hope that the 22nd is the date for the US carrier's because this baby will be in my pocket that very day!
It's not a deal breaker for me, the thing I like about the sd I'd if something happens to the phone how would you get your backups, photos, etc. off of it. I plan to keep it backed up to my computer or ex hard drive. Just saying

At the end of the day, the only people that will struggle are those who are used to using devices with a lot more storage.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
For me it's not an issue at all. I used to only believe in sd card storage but then I started to realize I've never even filled up an sd card to it full capacity and I've only ever had an 8gb card so 32gb is more than enough for me I can't even see my self getting close to 16 gb.
Not to mention I've had an iPhone for about 2 years now so I've gotten used to not having an sd card anyways.
with my phone history realistically whether the phone had memory card or not I haven't even used 11gb of memory ever! especially when I get bored of things I delete them. I have a 32gb memory card (29gb was free space) and I still have 23gb left! and I have tonnes of videos and music and pics on my memory card. Just generally if I want to watch HD content etc I put it on my laptop which has 750gb hard drive plus a bigger screen to watch things on.
In terms of backing everything up, my most important things are backed up on my laptop and my memory card and memory stick so even if the phone was to die, I would have everything available anyway as when I take pics and videos etc I put them on my laptop then memory stick or memory card. I suppose having a card slot makes thing easier but i am not fussed. Have had xperia S, One S and One X with no memory card and hasn't bothered me.
Never took the SD card out of my Nexus One in almost 3 years. So to me the SD card is pretty much just a potential security problem, I don't care about that at all. A removable battery is nice, though. This is actually the only real problem I have with the HTC One, that the battery is not removable and it doesn't have a waterproof-excuse for this like the Xperia Z.
I've been saying this since the One X was announced last year. Is it a big deal? No. Simple.
In a year or 2 there won't be any expandable memory. Apple made it a standard years ago and clearly survived. I hate to compare to them but it's a simple concept that works.

That's mainly because they increased the internal memory. With greater onboard memory it does negate the need, plus switching is just clumsy.
I'm coming from a 16GB iPhone 3GS and never filled it.
I'm just glad HTC went with a 32 and 64gb variants. Because if they would've made the one with just 16gb storage capacity, I don't care how good the device would've been, I still would have not consider it.
I rather have an sdcard slot. But with a 64gb internal storage, I'm good with.
I have a 32gb in my mytouch 4g and I'm already way over half of storage taken.

The smartphone obviously isn't a replacement for a desktop (or media content server), but is sure has become a replacement for all the other portable computerized devices we used to carry: PDA, GPS, camera and mp3 player, etc. So, what kind of storage would one need to replace all those devices? Camera storage of 8 - 16 GB is not unreal for a collection of photos and videos, and music player storage of 16 - 32 GB is not uncommon for a collection of music. That's pretty conservative these days.
And ya, cloud storage is great, but c'mon, let's be realistic, we want all of our music and video content available locally so that when we don't have connectivity (like on a plane) we can still access our collection of music and videos.
32GB is almost NOT enough for many users. It is good that a 64GB version is available. I only wish the 64 GB versions were more readily available.
With ~ 25 GB of user space left over on a 32GB phone, that's not enough for me. I could make it work, but I would have to make some serious compromises about what I would have to leave out of my music collections, just to add a movie or two to watch on a trip.
An SD card slot would have solved the whole thing.
Just because Apple makes lots of money selling products targeted to users who care less about options than your average techie, doesn't mean it is a good idea to copy them.
I'm seriously considering the HTC One, but the lack of SD card and battery replacement has ALWAYS been a negative point against the whole prospect. The screen resolution is a plus, but they are starting out with points against them with the SD card problem.
And I really don't understand why they would do that.

Are you concerned about space with the 32gb 6P you ordered?

After cancelling the 64gb graphite 6P, and going for the smaller 5X, and then cancelling the 5X and reordering the only available 32gb graphite 6P after realizing I'd much happier with the bigger device, sleeker looking, better specs after all. I'm wondering now if 32gb will be enough. I plan on shooting alot of photos and videos with this rumored great camera. What are your thoughts about the size?
Are you concerned about space with the 32gb 6P?
I'm not because I ordered a kingston c to A USB on the go. Despite that, 32 is perfect for me. But since you shoot lots of photos and videos 64 might be better but I upload everything to the cloud anyways.

Using a 64GB device now and I don't think I'd ever go for less for the foreseeable future. As much as you can get around things by using cloud services, you will always have that hard limit of ~26GB, which isn't that much... Especially for a large device that would be great for watching media.
I used to think i needed 64+ personally until I took a look at what I actually had on my device. Once I removed all of the crap I had on there (Games/movies/apps I no longer used/watched) I found I didn't need all the extra space. I also store all of my music, photos and high res vids in the cloud all the time so I can keep my device clean. When I travel I load up my device with all the media i'll want for the trip (just in case there is no in flight wifi) until i get where i'm going and I've still never run out of memory on my 32GB nexus 6
So pretty much this is a question no one can answer for you. It varies from person to person and you're just going to have to figure out how much memory you will require based on how you use your own personal device and the cloud services available to you.
I wouldn't go any less than 64. I have 70+gb of photos and videos and I like to have them to hand without relying on the cloud. I also have 40+gb of music. For me 128 isn't really enough either.

I hear ya, but this question was more aimed at the people that actually ordered the 32gb version
Presumably most people who would have been concerned about lack of space on a 32GB 6P would have ordered a larger one.

Do we know the size of 1 min 4k video recorded on Nexus 6p?
I found this link for S5 -

And the other link on one plus forum -

(don't have enough posts to share external links so had to make them simple text)
Both these links confirm the size to be 3.5 GB for 10 min of 4K video, which actually concerns me.
I should have gone with the 64/128 GB. But now if I cancel my Nexus 6p 32 GB order I don't know how long I'll have to wait for 64/128 GB as they both are out of stock.

Just buy a sim card adapter and if you need more space plug it in and put stuff you don't always use on the external sim card easy..

I have everything backed up online anyway, and I use Google Play All Access for my music, so I don't think 32Gb will be a problem at all. My current 32Gb Nexus 5 has so little stored on the actual phone, I've still got 12Gb free.

Do you mean SD Cards?
My 32GB N5 was full of TWRP backups more than anything else, so not concerned, 32GB should be plenty. I used to carry all my music with me, but now I uploaded it to Google and just stream it from there. Photos go on the NAS and Google Photos right away too, the phone is just a temporary cache.
32Gb is fine for me. I have a synology solution with plex.
So music/tv/films are all streamed OTG, yes it will suck as i need constant connection but I have unlimited data anyways so that doesn't concern me.
If i really wanted to take some films i'll just use a USB OTG storage solution. But that is super rare for me. I don't play games on my phone (tablet & PC for that)
