[Q] LG G2 AT&T unlock. - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I am a total noob when it comes to android, so please don't be upset by the noobish behavior. I just transferred over from using apple iphone for 5 years to the LG G2.
I installed twrp and clean rom xe 1.3 onto my LG G2 from AT&T. It comes rooted i suppose since i have access to superuser. Is my device now unlocked as well? I will be traveling to Europe next year and was wondering what I need to do in order to unlock the device.
Thanks in advance, and please correct me if I am wrong on anything I have mentioned so far.

No. Sim unlocking is seperate. I used: http://www.cellunlocker.net/. It ram me $10.
Now, if I misunderstood and you were referring to bootloader unlock, does not yet exist nor is needed for installing roms

Thanks for the info! I used to do software unlock using cydia on Iphone, but I guess that android does not have the same functionality.

May want to check this thread.

[Q] installing custom ROM on G2 [iPhone Refugee Thread]

Hello fellow XDA'ers,
I recently purchased the LG G2 and this is my first android phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 (for a multitude of reasons that are not applicable to this thread). I wanted to start this thread for people like myself who have no idea on how to install a ROM on an android device. There are various ROMs being released (verizon and ATT) and I would love a general walk through on how to install. Can anyone experienced point me in the right direction or offer any advice? Thanks in advance!

There aren't really any custom ROMs out for the G2 yet, just a couple of debloated ROMs (stock, plus root and minus carrier bloatware). Better ROMs will come, but it will be a little while. The G2 is just too new right now to have much out for it.
For a beginner, a few things you should keep in mind before rooting or installing a custom ROM:
* Be absolutely sure that what you're doing will work on your device before you do it. For instance, don't install a recovery image for an AT&T phone on a Verizon phone, unless you want to turn it into a paperweight.
* Read instructions carefully before you do anything. You should at least have some idea of what you're doing, so that in case something goes wrong, you'll at least have a chance of recovering. Don't just blindly follow instructions and hope you don't brick your phone.
* This *will* void your phone's warranty. If your phone dies after doing this (whether it's related to this or not), and you try to do a warranty exchange, they'll respond with something that is the same in English, Italian, and Spanish -- "No." On a related note, you are taking some risk by doing this. You could possibly mess up your phone. You could do things right, and an over-the-air update could conflict with what you've done and then mess up your phone. This is a risk you assume, not the developers of whatever you're trying to do.
* These forums, as well as #lg-g2, are for help. If you're not sure about something, ask. It's better to ask than to lose $600 because you incorrectly assumed that something would work.
Overall, rooting and ROMming your phone does give you more control. Just know what you're getting into.

There is risk involved yes, but it doesn't just straight up void your warranty in every situation. Depending on the carrier you are with and their RMA process you can get a perfect replacement with no hassle every time, and the carriers that do give trouble still have a small chance of going ahead with a replacement anyway depending on the tech you get. Many times for certain hardware issues it wont matter if you are rooted or not and you can still get a replacement as well. But choosing to unlock your device and do custom software for it you do have to accept responsibility that you could do something to break you device and that is your fault, not the manufacturer.
(skips these couple sections of text for just custom recovery and ROM install)
As for specific instruction, I cant really help much there. The instructions didn't really work well for me in the TWRP thread on XDA for installing, as there is nothing available when using Goo Manager, despite what that retarded thread says. I found better info on Rootz Wiki through a Google search on what to do, and even that was a bit wrong and I had to use some common sense to do things the right way. That common sense only comes from knowing how to use the command line and knowing how ADB commands work though, someone new to the process wont know that for themselves.
Looking over this thread for the newest info it looks like pretty much everything in this video should be correct and the download link for installing root should have everything you need:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y45SXPRb31o&feature=player_embedded
http://downloads.codefi.re/thecubed/lg_g2/root/ioroot6.zip
That gets root access on your device. You may or may not even want to do that. That installs root into your ROM you are currently running (stock), but you want to install a custom ROM and your custom one probably already is rooted to begin with. What you most likely want to do is just go straight to installing the drivers to connect your phone properly and use ADB to send ("push") files to your phone, then use something called "Loki" to bypass the locked bootloader and flash a custom recover to your phone. From there you can install ROMs perfectly easily. You can follow this guide in the link, but it doesnt give you links to the phone and ADB drivers you will need:
http://rootzwiki.com/news/loki-bootloader-bypass-twrp-recovery-come-att-verizon-lg-g2/
Right now there is not really anything but Clean ROM available, which is the stock OS that has a bunch of the "bloated" and unnecessary LG and ATT system apps un-installed. It cleans things up a lot and gives you a much better experience. In the future hopefully we will see some AOSP based ROMs that have a lot of the good features like "knock on", and those ROMs will be best since they dont have any of the bloat that the LG ROM has, and the AOSP based stuff gets a lot better mods to them and offers far better customization and tweaking.
Thanks for the info! I did not know that a most ROMs come rooted. So basically, I would not need to root then install a ROM?
I have an AT&T G2 so I would be installing the Clean ROM posted in the developers section. I would love the opportunity to debloat the phone and it seems like this is the best option currently. Enigma, are you saying that the knock on and off feature does not work with this ROM?
Installing ROM

Put your phone in USB debugging mode under developer tools...hook up the micro usb to your phone and move the zipped ROM to the root of your internal phone storage.

Or enable wireless storage via the notification drop down, you can now approach your device via Wi-Fi lan and upload whatever (it makes your device into a network drive)

[Q] LG G2 unlock

Hi! I hope this is being posted in the correct place first and foremost.
I'm pretty pissed to find out today that EE will not be releasing the KitKat update for my G2
I received an email from LG confirming this and so replied with the obvious question 'How can I do it then please? '.
They said I would need to get my phone unlocked from EE. Now, being a complete noob when it comes to this sort of thing I don't really know what I'm doing. So I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask before I attempt any unlocking.
1. Once I've managed to unlock my phone can I still use the Sim Card that came with it? I have a 24 month contract with EE and can't really afford to run two tariffs.....
and
2. Is there not an easier way to go about getting KitKat? I had a Galaxy S2 and when I wanted to upgrade the firmware on there I used ODIN. But I can't seem to find a way that is similar to that for LG phones.......
I apologise if this post is not in the correct thread but I really would appreciate any help anyone could give me.
Many thanks!

well the g2 has a tool like odin if you looked in the general thread there is a return to stock guide which can be used to flash any firmware as long as its for your device, I do know that the d802 can flash any d802 kdz file even if it's for another carrier, I do not own one but you can always ask around to make sure you don't do something wrong

Yeah and apparently cricket has it for $49.99 with an unlock code from ebay running around $5. With the poor support from alcatel it's not a phone I'd recommend to anyone anymore. I've moved onto a new device as have several others although I keep hoping alcatel might surprise me.
I get better performance with my $50 at&t go phone zte zmax2 (z958) which doesn't even have a root method.

You seem much more knowledgeable with the Idol 3 than me, I purchased the phone used from Craigslist, apparently the previous owner had an older version of TWRP on the phone and thought he was rooted but still on LP, anyhow after getting phone home there were some weird issues and random force close of system apps, so I factory reset it, and it bootlooped on me, I used mobil upgrade Q and it updated it to MM, its now running pretty good with no issues, but now im stuck with no fastboot or access to unlock bootloader, install TWRP and root. I know I can use the Panasonic Eluga Switch method to downgrade. My question is,if anything goes wrong or I manage to screw up something, will the Eluga Switch software change anything on the phone that will prevent me from running mobil upgrade Q again and installing factory firmware?? I'm just worried that if the Eluga Switch changes anything that will prevent the mobil upgrade software from recognizing the phone, and leaving me with a brick :crying:

You should asks your questions in the Q&A forum rather than here but as a quick answer...nothing you do should stop mobile q from working. You'd only be on the eluga software long enough to re-install twrp...once you upgrade to marshmallow via @The Marionette's marshmallow rom you can then use @Unjustified Dev's instructions to re-enable fastboot by flashing the package he put together from twrp.

Ok thanks for the answer, I was hoping that was the case, sorry for asking in the wrong place. I just wanted to be absolutely certain before I took the chance. Been reading up for past couple of days and knew the available options, just needed the confirmation that mobil update could save me from myself  , again thanks for the help!!

NEW to all this please help?

So im more from the PC side of things but Just got a ATT LG V20. Can someone just let me know a few things? sorry for Noob and TY
1) Is it possible to ROOT an ATT LG V20?
2) Is it easy? one-button approach far far off?
3) Do any phones that get rooted, NEED to be unlocked first??
4) Kali Nethunter on LG V20 a pipe dream? How about on a Galaxy S6,7?
4) If I got a new Samsung Galaxy S6,7 are these much easier and does it matter if they are Verizon or ATT??
again TY for answering prob very easy questions.

1) answer is yes. Don't listen to the guy who said it's not. The Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, and Sprint all have unlocked bootloaders and root.
2)No one click methods exists, but the method is not hard. Just follow the directions carefully and you'll be fine. Also, ask questions before proceeding to make sure you understand. We were all new at one point so don't be ashamed.
3)The process that exists currently actually unlocks the bootloader and roots the phone at the same time basically. You can skip rooting at the end by not doing the very last step but supposedly the phone will have some performance issues.
4)Not sure what Kali NewHunter is.
4)I can't really answer that either because I don't have experience with those devices.

I'm not sure what you're looking to do exactly based on your post.
The only way to "convert" your 10 software is to have s-off first. After that, you can convert a Verizon HTC 10 variant to the Unlocked variant, and vice versa.

OK, so when you say firmware, I'm assuming you mean the full phone software.
I have converted my phone from Verizon to Unlocked.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/how-to/convert-htc-10-verizon-to-unlock-t3519776
You need s-off first. Steps 10 and beyond are needed if you want to use the phone on verizon.
Also, if you you're currently on Oreo, you'll need an additional step after installing Nougat to get the radio working.

If you're on nougat, the only way to S-off your device is to mail it in to the Sunshine team. They're pretty trustworthy, in case you do decide to go down that route. It'll cost you 25$ plus shipping
