[Q] Restoring to complete stock without access to USB - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I, like several others I've found while Googling the issue, have a problem with my Galaxy S4 and its USB port. The phone is not recognized when I plug it into my PC via USB (I have tried several USB cables already). Also, it does not charge properly when I plug it into the wall charger. I've tried the original S4 charger that came with it as well as several other chargers. As with other reports I've seen, the phone does seem to charge, albeit very slowly, when I plug it in while it's off. However, it shows the charging battery image briefly, then it goes blank, vibrates and shows it again.
I've had a similar problem with my Galaxy S2 in the past which was corrected by replacing the USB port and ribbon cable. It was quite simple, but I had to buy a couple of different version of this same part as some versions of the component seemed to affect the quality of reception. Since my S4 is still under warranty, I would like to avoid having to do this myself and get Samsung to do it for me, through official channels. However, my experience with my S2 showed me that Samsung is quite sensitive to devices whose software have been "tampered" with. They refused to repair my S2 because it had been rooted (they were able to tell this, even though I had unrooted it).
I had previously rooted my S4 and had installed a custom recovery. After this, the splash screen upon turning it on would say "Custom". I used "Triangle Away" to remove the "Custom" warning. I then unrooted my S4 (perhaps prematurely?) and did a factory reset. Here are some details about my device:

I really want to make sure that Samsung does not refuse my repair again. The only odd thing is that whenever I try to perform a Software Update, I get an "Update Interrupted" message. I would like to do a complete restore to stock firmware, but it is quite difficult since I do not have access to USB for ODIN or ADB. I can transfer files to my SD card, but I no longer have root.
My questions are twofold: 1) is there any reason Samsung would refuse my repair with the device is it is described above (is there any other way they can see that it has been rooted/modified in the past)? 2) Is there any way to recover the original firmware without access to a USB port?
I apologize for the extremely long post, but thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide!
Regards,
Domenico

Well, it's been about a week and I've received no response, other than a 1 star rating with no explanation (thanks for that, very helpful). I've decided to bite the bullet and send in the phone as-is. I hope they don't refuse to service it!

I think you will be fine. If you have a stock rom and a stock recovery and your counter is reset, then there is not much more you can do.
/edit
Wat does "settings>about device" say? Does it say custom? If so, you can try to flash a stock rom with Mobile Odin. You have to search for instruction because i've never done it. Also try to flash a stock rom without Knox.

Thanks for responding, Lennyz1988!
I checked About Device and it doesn't say "Custom" anywhere. Under "Device Status", it shows "Official".
The only thing that bothers me is the fact that it always says "Upgrade Interrupted" when I try to run a software update. In any case, thanks for reassuring me. In the future, I'll look into Mobile Odin. Sounds interesting, even if I have a functional USB port!

[Q] Soft brick? Hard brick? Sort of firm'ish brick really

I've made a bit of a mess and I need help please. My s4 is softbricked, but as softbricks go, it's rather hard.
I have an early S4 i9505 bought from Carphone Warehouse (UK, unlocked, pre knox). I rooted it, installed TBackup, greenify and got it how I wanted it. Then I downloaded a stock firmware from Sammobile and tested to see if I could get it back to 'warranty' condition, which was a success.
Confident that I could obtain warranty if I needed it, I re-rooted it, installed TB and greenify, and it ran sweetly for months from that point onwards.
I read about the arrival of updates (and knox) and concluded I didn't need them. It was working, leave it alone.
Then out of the blue, my nice stable machine broke. I didn't change anything I was aware of to cause it.
No normal boot.
No recovery.
Download only.
Using Odin, I tried allsorts, eventually getting the same Sammobile firmware to run.
2 days later, it broke again, same as before, but worse!?
Then I tried all sorts of stuff downloading no end of things trying to get it to boot or even go into recovery. The most promising approach was to reload the firmware along with a .pit file, but still no joy. I've lost track of the other things I tried, but I've been doing it for a week, so a lot has been done. In desperation, I even tried downloading the latest firmware, so I now have signs of knox of the odin page.
I now have the following symptoms:
Booting into recovery brings up the blue 'booting recovery' message then just blackness.
Normal boot is exactly the same as above.
Unpowered conection to my laptop gives a 5 second boot loop featuring the buzz only.
I can reliably boot into download and download stuff with Odin and change the little Odin page status messages. After (foolishly) trying the latest firmware, these messages say
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME GT-I9505
CURRENT BINARY Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS Official
KNOX KERNEL LOCK 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0x0
CSB-CONFIG-LSB 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: enable
eMMC BURST MODE enabled
Please can anyone give me some advice on what else I could try?
Thanks

If anything else is not working (especially, if you're unable to go to recovery) I'd call sammy service center. Your download mode says that you did not rooted your phone, and knox is untouched either.

Thanks for looking spamtrash.
I was wondering if I could get away with that. It does look good from the Odin display, but the flash counter must have a pretty high number in it by now! Won't that show up somewhere?
Do you think it does actually have a fault on it, rather than just some software that's messed up and needs tweaking?
Thanks

1. Are you able to go to recovery mode?
2. Assuming that your previous communicates were taken from the screen in download mode - you're clean.
If answer for 1 is: NO, and assuming 2: do not bother the flash counter. Flash counter does not means you messed with custom ROMs, it just means amount of the ROM update tries. As they are unable to prove that the counter was not increased by failed KIES updates, you're safe.
To go deeper, service will have to flash and wipe your phone.
One thing: remove your sd card prior to giving/sending it out.
Try a different usb cable.I was in same boat as you (after stupidly thinking mobile odin pro liked modems).
Luckily I had an unused cable off my tab 3.

[Q] Note3 not detected by computer or by Kies3. At same time charging is working fine

Hi All,
Hope all are doing well. My partner recently brought this Note3 (rooted) in resale and its working perfectly fine except for following two issues
1) When connected to computer its just charging only. No Mobile Drive found for data copying.
2) Kies is also not detecting this mobile (making it difficult for me to copy media files and other files).
To resolve this issue, I tried "Make sure the Samsung drivers are installed. Power off your phone. Power on the phone in Download mode. (Volume Down + Home + Power) Press Volume Up to continue. Once it's in Download mode, plug it into your computer. Windows should now discover it and load the driver. Once this is complete, unplug the phone from the computer, and pull the battery out of the phone to get out of Download mode. Replace the battery, and power on the phone like normal. It should connect to the computer properly" but no change.
Due to above two things, I am unable to copy data to and fro between computer and this mobile and I can't backup my mobile data to kies nor I can restore my data from old mobile device. I don't want to upgrade O.S on this device for now but I just need access to backup and restore my data and off course to copy data between phone and computer. This phone is rooted is there any commands I can run on it to make it work. Please help.
Any help resolving above issues will be highly appreciated.

I saw a similar issue here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/help/problem-connecting-t2802339) and few other people got the same too.
If you mean when connected via USB your PC cannot recognize it or the phone is not appearing in my computer as media device. Then try uninstalling USB driver for the phone and reinstall it, try another USB port. If nothing help then it’s a fault with the USB cable itself. Try another cable, if not help try another again. Its most likely the cable fault.

Thanks MacSyn, I already tried all of this still same issue.
I have two note3 (9000 and 9005) mine is 9000 and my partners is 9005. Mine work fine from same computer with same cable attached. Its just the problem with my partners 9005 note3. I tried with four different usb 3 cables, two usb2 cables still same issue.
Is it happening because its rooted? How to resolve this issue or where can I find help to such issue? I didn't posted about my issue anywhere else except here. Because I trust (most of my friends do) XDA.
Please help.

Welcome, If you’ve tried different cables all nothing helped then definitely its the phone end issue. But its hard to say it’s a hardware issue or software end issue. This could be due to rooting or improper rooting. But did it working fine before rooting? However I’ve never heard such issues with rooted device.
Wait for any expert’s feedback or bring your phone to Samsung, they will fix it.

Thanks for your response MaxSync.
Do you think Samsung will still support this device as it rooted? I heard that they will not support or service devices which are rooted.
I don't know whether it worked prior to rooted or not, as I received this device rooted (its a resale piece).
If I have to install clean unrooted Original Samsung ROM with current given condition where my Device is not recognized by my PC. What are the options I have, like from where I will get original Samsung ROM and how to hook up this device. I never done rooting/unrooting before.

Yes rooting voids warranty. If it is still in warranty period (1yr) and if I were at your place, I would go to service center and tell them the issue and never inform them it is rooted. If they says its rooted and void warranty then I would innocently act like I don’t know anything about it and don’t know how it got rooted. Max time this works. If it’s a software end issue it will take them just few minutes to reinstall the rom.
What I will advice if this doesn’t fix over online then take it to service center and see what they says.
If its not recognized by PC then you cant reinstall by pc. You can get the latest stock firmware at http://www.sammobile.com and I think there would be way to save the rom file in memory card and install it from there. But I’m not sure. Google it.
Also 1st try to hard reset the phone from boot menu (not factory reset from settings). Turn off the phone and by holding 3 keys and wipeout all data and reset. (backup everything before doing this as it will clear all data). See if this solve the issue.
Thanks
Thanks Macsyn for you help again.
I tried hard reset on weekend & it didn't worked. I took this phone to service center and they screwed up the phone and given it back saying they don't support international model note 3 9005 as its not yet launched in India.
What are the chances that these note3 of mine is not unlocked one? I mean does Samsung support unlocked models? Can you tell me (or is it a way to find) is it a genuine note3 or unlock note3 or something else?

I actually didn't read all of the replies above so if somebody already solved your problem... sorry.
If you have Developer Options enabled, make sure that USB debugging is not checked.
Also, make sure that Verify Apps Via USB is not checked.

If you mean service provider unlocked, what I know clone/fake note 3s are never locked as no provider sales these. If it’s a locked phone by your provider then definitely it’s a genuine one. But also check for signs it’s a genuine one or not.

[Q] Revert Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime SM-G5030AZ back to stock Rom after Kingroot

Hello to you to you all. I wish I never rooted. I need to know what I did to my phone now that I used Kingroot on this Grand Prime. I also need to get my phone to not say custom in about phone. I tried Samsung Kies and I got error messages. Do I need to flash a stock Rom? Is my bootloader damaged? Please, I beg you experts please help me?. Thank you all in advance for your time and effort.

Use super su, and un-root your phone with the option for un-root. Or just flash stock rom that's match your model.
I apologize but I have tried to give supersu superuser status although supersu would have those permissions from kingroot, it could not update it's binaries. When I did a full unroot with kingroot, my phone still was not allowed to receive over the air updates via wifi. About flashing a stock Rom I can reroot with kingroot but I cannot locate any stock Rom for this phone. I did a lot of research trying to find one. Can you please advise to as to where to go so that I can locate the stock Rom? Thank you.

Getting the stock firmware
I have searched that particular location and my model is SM-G530AZ and it's not found in that directory. I am at a checkmate. Unless I can use a firmware from one of the Grand Prime phones with a similar model but that to me does not make too much sense... Or maybe it does. But regarding my particular model it doesn't exist (or so it seems. Can one please come up with a solution? Flashing the Rom is the only option at this point so need download stock. Thanx everyone. ?.

Since your model is a dual with lte i guess you can use the 530h firmware. but i'm not sure.
My Model's Definite Firmware
Thank you very much for that info. But its not a definite so I wouldn't go ahead with it. I find it very interesting that for every other model of the Grand Prime there is a definete stock software available for the user. But when it comes to mine there isn't. So if anyone can possibly find it I'll be so happy.

I am facing the same challenge with my G530AZ model aswell. I am not even able to see my Network mode menu to change after realizing my device can not receive 3G signal only Edge. I located this menu after rooting to unlock my phone however it has completely vanished as I may put it. Any news on a compatible stock rom will be appreciated aswell.
Solution for reverting phone fully into stock (SM-G530AZ) & any other Samsung
I wasn't going to let Samsung Customer Service get away with not be able to give me info on how to get the code for emergency recovery mode using Samsung Kies. I got the Samsung Rep to tell me how to get the code in Kies all the time (in emergency recovery mode). Have the usb plugged in first without the phone connected to it. Then hold down the volume down key on your phone when it's OFF and after the volume down key is being held down, connect your phone to the USB while the Samsung Kies program is running. The code should show in Kies after that. Then go to the tools selection in Kies and click on the Recovery Mode option and you follow the further instructions. I didn't try this yet but I will very soon. I wrote this right after I got off the phone from the Samsung Rep. I really hope that this is a true method that works. If yes, cheers to all!
Sorry, can't be so trusting with Customer Service Rep of Samsung
I apologize for my previous post in a way. Well first of all this model SM-G530AZ (my model) isn't compatable with Kies as in that I got a message from Kies saying that. Therefore there was no way for me to know that the holding of the volume down method will generate the code for the emergency software reflash on this model. Finally, if that Rep was able to make that mistake I doubt whether it works for phones that are compatable with Kies.

Any luck on flashing the sm-g530az. I try most of the firmware from sammobile. But no luck. And, sm-g5630az firmware is not in Sam Moblie.
Only solutions I can think of...
Earlier in this forum a member said that you can possibly use the 530h firmware, being that they are basically the same firmware as ours although he said he's not totally sure. If Kies 3 and the newer version of Kies (the name slipped my mind, but the message pops up anytime one installs Kies 3 asking if you want to download it) don't work because a message comes up saying that the phone doesn't support initializing, maybe what that member said is the only possible option for right now. But now I'm thinking that you can do anything to your phone which will be "normal" looking as far as for the things which the customer service reps look for see if the phone was tampered with which voids the warranty, in a repair center they can wipe all from the phone and put stock software. But the issue with that may be that the binaries that are on you phone now may cause your phone to get bricked being that their software uses different binaries. This is when they plug it in by them the phone need to load to 100% and if it stops in middle the phone is bricked. So they told me that there is that risk. If you can fool them into trying to do that flashing process on your phone because they seem to think that the warrantee is intact and it doesn't get bricked, you are good to go (I visited a Samsung repair center and found this out being that I had issues with them). But in your case that may or may not be possible . Good luck.
Your instructions were slightly off. Here's what worked.
1) install KIES 3. DO NOT PLUG IN PHONE
2) go to tools -> firmware upgrade and initialisation in KIES
3) device id = SM-G530AZ ; serial number is under battery
4) allow KIES to download the firmware
5) place phone in ODIN mode/Emergency Download Mode (hold VOL DWN and HOME while powering on ) then plug in phone to computer via USB
6) allow KIES to send image to phone. Have some ice cream and egg rolls and do not touch anything.
7) PROFIT! After the phone restarts, it will take you through initial set up (like when you bought it)
YOU WIN!! Even the Mobile Data is Set-up Already!
All your screwups (soft brick, deletes systemui....) are forgiven. Don't do it again.

did this work on the build g530az of5?
Cricket has not yet made lollipop available to me (I keep checking), so I have not been able to test it.
I have the SM-G530AZ and I'm trying to restore stock using the method you provided but I'm stuck at 8% update/initialization. I've tried everything I can think of to unbrick my phone. Please help!

try again following those directions thoroughly, just worked for me earlier today, make sure you're on a good internet connection, and don't plug in the phone (which will be in download mode) until you absolutely have to. hope all goes well.
Thanks a million

your instructions were slightly off.
Have some ice cream and egg rolls and do not touch anything.

thank you so much man i had rooted my galaxy grand prime from cricket with kingroot ..couple hours later once my phone died and restarted it said my phone was flashed and locked due to unauthorized firmware ..i could not get into my phone at all.. Only able to see odin mode (download mode) ..so i did some research and could not find sm-g530az firmware anywhere for download. So i went to cricket they told me my phone is no good i had to get another one. I was furious ..but didnt give up since im pretty mobile phone and computer savvy. I still did some research found this thread and downloaded kies 3 .it did not recognize my phone for connection ..so i downloaded kies 2.6 and kies lite.
It just kept saying connecting ..so i then followed ur steps above and it brought my phone back to life ..crazy how cricket and even samsun themselves did not know what to do as i was on the phone with both of them ..they told me my phone is no longer good ..smh ...anyways thank you sooo much ..saved me about $150.
I hope this helps anyone else that is in the same position that i was in

"Sim card removed" error with CM 12.1 on Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505

First off thanks for this forum and its plethora off information.
My problem:
1. Bought a brand new GT-I9505.
2. Installed cm-12.1-20151117-SNAPSHOT-YOG7DAO1JN-jfltexx with this guide (https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_jfltexx)
3. Everything went smooth but the next day starting to get "Sim Card Removed" errors
4. Search the internets and saw that it was a know problem to some batches of S4 phones (https://www.google.nl/search?q=sams....69i57j0l5.15789j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)
5. Called customer support of where I bought the phone. Told me I could return it because of the Dead On Arrival support that they give for these cases.
6. Tried to reset to stock but that didn't work because, as I came to discover, knox Warranty Void got triggered to 0x1.
7. Did a factory reset with CM and send the phone back to the company.
8. They sent the phone back to me saying they could not remove CM and that they wanted me to reinstall the OS which came with the phone.
From my past knowledge (installing CM on a galaxy S2) I remembered that my warranty ony would be voided when I would root my device.
I felt supported in that assumption by the text on the install page for my phone which stated:
"The preferred method of installing a custom recovery is through this boot mode. Rooting the stock firmware is neither recommended nor necessary"
So I thought I was doing the installation correctly in terms of warranty voiding.
Clearly that assumption was false because meanwhile Knox got implemented and I should have read upfront before installing CM obviously on my new phone. My bad.
However I am now in a stiuation where I have bought a phone with a hardware defect (Sim card is randomly not being detected) but I cannot return it because Samsung has set a flag which cannot be reset (http://omegadroid.co/wanted-knox-void-warranty-0x1/).
I have read some posts (e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568450) about that it is possible to return to stock but either the posts are relatively old or they are about other devices and/or Android versions.
So I am confused about what my options are at the moment and before I go into the process of trying to bring back my phone to stock I wanted to ask help from some better informed people about this situation.
My questions are:
1. Can I go back to stock firmware from CM 12.1 while knox got triggered.
2. If so, do I need to root my phone?
3. If succeeded is there a way to hide the Warranty Void message while booting. I am talking about hiding here and not removing/resetting the flasg to 0x0 as that is not possible.
Thanks in advance,
Undersound

1) Yes, of course.
2) No.
3) Don't know what you are talking about.
Odin is used to flash stock roms on Samsung devices. That is the only way.
There are links to guides in the help thread in the Q&A section.
Yes u can go back to stock. Just download the firmware from sammobile.com then download odin now put ur phone in download mode and start odin as admin.
Next in pda select the file u downloaded from sammobile and flash.
Thats all

Thanks both for your answers.
Should have been more clear in point 6 where I write I tried to reset to stock.
I tries resetting to stock with Odin 3.10.7 (also tried 3.09 and 3.07) and a firmware image from sammobile.com
Unfortuanetely I got an error relating to my pit file.
Used heimdall to create one from my phone.
Tried to go back to stock again via pda and pit file options (re-partition checked this time)
Unfortuanetely it still didn't work. Don't have access to the exact error messages here from that process but will post back the error messages once I do.
Thanks again for your time and support on this

Such errors are usually related to the USB cable, USB port on the pc (back ports are recommended) and Windows version.
Edit: You might be able to use FlashFire to flash the stock rom if Odin doesn't work.

That's good to know, thanks. I was trying this with an extended usb cable so it can be the definitely the case.
Will try later today with a direct connection to a backport.

Managed to return to stock firmware, yay!
In case it helps someone else, here are my steps:
1. By dialing *#1234# on a similar phone I checked what ap/cp/csc version I needed
Code:
AP: I9505XXUHOF2
CP: I9505XXUHOF2
CSC: I9505OXAHOF2
2. Downloaded the correct firmware image (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/50091/I9505XXUHOF2_I9505YHNHOF2_PHN/)
3. Extracted the firmware file
4. Opened Odin v3.10.7
5. Rebooted Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
6. Connected phone and waited until I got a blue sign in Odin
7. Added the firmware file to AP / PDA
8. Made sure re-partition was NOT ticked
9. Clicked the start button
10. Then I got a PASS!
So I guess there can be 2 reasons my first attempt of flashing stock firmware did not worked:
1. The firmware I used the first time was not correct for this phone (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/64897/I9505XXUPOL1_I9505PHNPOL1_PHN)
I did not know at that time about checking my ap/cp/csc described in Step 1 above so I was just downloading the firmware which seemed the most appropiate according to the country / provider.
What helped me a lot was when I found the explanation of the parts of the version number:
Code:
I9505XXUHOF2
I9505 = phone model
XX = country/region code
UHOH2 = modem
2. The second attempt I followed GDReaper suggestion and I used the usb cable directly on of the backports of my pc so that could have helped as well.
Another thing that was not clear to me at first were the providers code. Or well, they were clear to me that they were abbreviations for telecom providers but I did not bought these phones from a provider so I was not sure which one to pick. After a while I came to discover that I needed PHN which means Unbranded
Code:
---------------------
PHN = unbranded
TNL = Tmobile
VDF = Vodafone
Thanks all for the help

Phone won't reboot after rooting (Samsung Galaxy J5)

Hello, um, I need a li'l help here
I just rooted my phone(Samsung J500H) and after it said "PASS" the phone is supposed to successfully restart but mine didn't. There are even yellowish-green lines on the screen. I used Odin(v.10) btw
I was about to try factory reset but I can't access recovery mode. Every time I try to it just goes back to the yellowish-green lines.
I can still access the download mode though. These are what's on the upper left of the screen:
Odin Mode
(Product Name)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Official
FRP Lock: Off
Knox Warranty Void: 0x1(4)
Secure Download: Enable
I downloaded Samsung Kies(I saw this tutorial on youtube on how he recovered his phone using Kies. There are a lot of comments saying it worked for them). It was fine until it asked for the s/n of my phone. I typed everything correctly and it would still end up saying "The S/N you have entered is incorrect". I even downloaded both Kies and Kies3 just to make sure and both has the same result.
That's it. After that I'm stuck. Heeeeellpp

On which firmware did u root? Lollipop or marshmallow? The greenish yellow screen is because u didnt flash the correct twrp recovery via odin...twrp for lollipop will not work on marshmallow
However if u need d link to the firmware, i ll send u as its there in my online files...download has unlimited bandwidth

Just download any country's firmware for J500H and flash it using odin. All country's firmware will work on your device as long as it is for J500H. Just dont use any other model's firmware like J500F.
