[Q] How to hard reset without removable battery? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just picked up this awesome device (T-Mobil D801) and am getting ready to flash some of the newly arrived ROMs. I come from a Galaxy Nexus, which has a removable battery. Many times when flashing ROMs on the GNex the phone would not boot and would freeze--my only remedy was to remove the battery and replace, then reboot.
How does one recover from a similar situation with the G2 if the battery cannot be removed? Thanks in advance for your help.

Either hold power or power+volume down

The way is Hold down power+ vol down, after LG logo appears let go of both buttons and press them again. U will be presented with hard reset option, confirm it with pressing power button

If the phone is frozen the first thing you want to do is turn the phone completely off. To do this you hold the power down for approx 15 seconds. At that point it should boot. There are a few different button combos you can use at this point.

I don't think you really mean hard reset. You just mean power down and turn back on. To me, hard reset is deleting everything ala factory reset.
The other guys have it nailed on the head. Just hold down the power button for a long time until it turns off. Same deal with most non-removable battery devices. iPhones are probably the same, I know the Nexus 7s are, etc. Just hold it down forever.

[Q] HELP! My Tab 7.7 can't boot!

Anybody knows what's wrong and how do I solve it? Here's the entire story (if it helps):
I went to Play and updated my apps. I press and held the power button and selected "restart". (I restart my device regularly) However, after shutting down, it does not boot at all and no matter how many times I press the power button it just wouldn't boot up!
I tried charging it too. Nothing happens even after plugging in.

Can you get to the boot loader, if so, try to wipe data from the recovery within the boot loader.
Or else leave the battery to drain fully , this will solve your problem and the tab will boot.
This happened to me couple of weeks ago and draining the battery solved this issue.

May I know how do I get to the bootloader? I can't even allow the battery to drain. The problem is it is not even starting at all. I pressed the power button a million times and NOTHING happens at all, the screen didn't even turn on.

Nope. I wish it did.
Try to hold the power button in about 4 or 5 seconds. I doubt it'll do anything. It sounds like there's a problem with power button or hardware.
I had a thrive 7 before I got my gtab 7.7 and my first one I exchanged because of a problem identical to yours. It was very sketchy to power on.
Exchange or warranty if you can unless someone else has any ideas

Only alternative left to leave it till battery drains, if you can remember the battery percentage before this happens, otherwise i am out of solutions.
A service center would be an alternative choice.

Custom roms and non-removable battery

So this phone has a non removable battery....
A few times now I have seen the need to do a battery pull when you're installing recovery or something goes wrong with a rom install....esp when you get into a bootloop....how will this play out on a phone where you can't?

As it's been stated countless times, either a combination of button presses, or holding down the power button for a long period will cut off the power. The exact method varies by phone though
Check the HTC One X forum. Fixed battery, and no problem whatsoever with taking care of freeze ups or lock ups. Just hold the power Key & Volume - keys for like 10 seconds, and it reboots.

i smell a bad future for me and this phone then. my volume keys are compeltly worn out on my phone right now, i can barly get to safeboot(power+volDown) as it is much less if any soft reset to break a freeze needs the buttons x.x
luckly this will be my second phone and ive found a way to nearly use every button from the screen already, still feels bad.
Besides after root you can install apps to reboot right into recovery mode or fast boot if you are a flashoholic like me to preserve volume keys
I saw a video about the phone that stated that holding down the power button for 10 seconds will turn the phone off. It's something they have to build into something that doesn't have a removable battery, not just for users but for them as well.
Same thing as a desktop, or laptop, or tablet, or any other phone that locks up. Hold the power button. It's a hardware-level thing, it works regardless of what state the device is in.

This. My HTC One X can do this anywhere - even fastboot and recovery. It's hardcoded to the button logic.
M.
It's the new Nexus, man! Hopefully you won't be putting as many ROMs on this as you would with other mobile devices.
I started doing it on my Galaxy Nexus a while ago and then I ended up going back to stock because it was just so good and I found I never needed a custom ROM on it. My HTC Desire on the other hand... well, let's just say that that thing has had a real beating with me flashing new ROMs on it almost every day! Haha!
On my Xperia T you must keep down the power button and volume up for five seconds, which forces the phone to shut down. Maybe it's the same?

Power button not working

Hi guys.
My Galaxy Note 3 power button has just completely stopped working. Is there a setting that turns off the power button functionality that I might have accidentally pressed?
Cheers.
Edit: I should elaborate here. The phone is switched on, everything works as normal but no matter how many times I try it, the power button just not do anything (holding it down, pressing different areas)

Did you try a battery reset? With the phone off, can you get into either Download or Recovery mode? That would eliminate the possibility of an OS issue.

I kind of scared to turn the thing off in case I can't switch it back on. I'll try it though.
Edit: It's dead. Taken the battery but can't switch back on now. What a joke.

I know I kind of expect this bad luck these days after having two faulty Nexus 7's. My Galaxy S2 power button is still going strong after 2 and a half years but the Note 3 lasts 7 hours

It's a dud mate. Faulty unit.
Just send it back and get it replaced.
Just send it for replacement. There's a reason phones come with a warranty that covers manufacturer defects. Whining about it to strangers in the forum is not going to fix it for you.

Yeah this is definitely the least friendly of all the Android forums. Sorry to hear you have a dud unit mate. Get it replaced.
My power button is not working to turn the screen off. Long press works to bring up the power down menu or to do a hard shut down. It works to turn back on though. Seems to happen after I plug it into the wall charger. Restoring a nandroid backup fixes the issue.
Not sure if it's related but my PC's USB crashed after trying to plug the phone in and use USB 3.0 to transfer files. I had to refresh my W8 PC to get the USB working again.
I have the Sprint version, rooted and running JellyBomb.

I have the same problem. my power button is done for. whenever i need to start it. I plug it in and go into recovery and reboot from there. I also use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenoffpro&hl=en for screen timeout and lock. And you can also get exposed and gravity box and there is a status bar tweak to double tap the status bar to lock screen (put phone to sleep).
I tried everything then found the solution on another website
My note 3 has been with me for almost 2 years now and it's power button stopped working about 2-3 months ago. Until now I avoided draining the battery below 2% and was fine but just today I dropped my phone and it shut down. I knew that my power button didn't work because of hardware problems so a soft reset didn't work for me. What I found however is that if your power button is dead you can just very quickly remove and re-insert your battery and your samsung device (I have no idea if this works on other brands) automatically boots itself. I'll give the link too incase I wasn't clear enough and I hope this helps people who shared my worries.

[Q] 0% battery and cannot restore factory

Hello guys,
I own LG G2 Intl version. A couple days ago the device has suddenly stopped charging with only rising 2% after 12 hours of charging then kept discharging until reaching 0%. Then it would never go above 0%. While connected with the charger, I can switch the device on. On the lock screen it says it is charging but in the Settings it says not charging. I read a lot of posts here in XDA and outside suggesting once a software issue and another a hardware issue.
Anyways, I have tried then a lot of chargers like original Samsung charger, Laptop current, original ASUS Tablet charger with all failing to charge. According to LG Live Chat and summary of different posts, it looks like a hardware issue. But because the device is still less than three months old and still on warranty, I contacted the Reseller (Amazon), who said that I could return the phone.
But since then I have been trying to reset my phone to factory settings (as some suggested it may help as well) and more important to get rid of my personal data. But I cannot. When I go to settings to restore to factory settings, a 5% battery is required to restore. While on charger trying to reach the recovery menu through (Power-Volume-Down then release then both again after displaying the logo) does not either work.
Any workaround how to restore it to factory settings?
I tried to connect my phone through BT to BT-ADB my phone and adb reboot it into recovery, but did not work, as my device could not get IP for bluetooth assigned!! Strange!!! My device is not rooted and I do not want to root it, so that it does not get the warranty lost.
Any workaround how to restore my device to factory settings?
Thank you!

You forget to tell us what firmware version you are on, if you aren't rooted I assume you're using Kitkat/Kitkat bootloader?
Kitkat: Hold Power + Power Down, when LG Logo appears, switch to holding Volume Up + Volume Down.
Jellybean: Hold Power + Power Down, when LG Logo appears, let go and repress Power + Volume Down.
Note that doing a factory reset doesn't really stop your data from being recovered from nosey people, it just puts your data in a "last overwritten" state. To the naked eye you've wiped your phone but to be really safe it's good to wipe your hard drive using cryptographic algorithms multiple times, about 10. It may not make your data unrecoverable but at least anyone who wants to recover your data will have a hard time doing so. I wouldn't really worry about doing this in your case though.

Thank you for your reply. I know that to totally erase my data a multi-write cryptographic erase is required. But the point is that I just want to restore to factory settings, so that notifications do not get easily read, in the case someone tried to open my phone and discovered it is still not restored. I will try doing 7-pass erase. Do you suggest an app?
Besides, your method did not work either. I am on KitKat 4.4.2. This is what I have done (while on charger, as I cannot remove the charger: 0% battery!!):
1- Volume-Down first pressed and held, then Power button pressed and held.
2- Waited a couple seconds until the LG logo appeared. Then I let go the Power Button while still holding the volume down, then held the Volume-Up.
3- The phone booted normally!!
I tried the steps again and again, and many times with releasing both buttons upon logo appearance then holding both V-Up and V-Down (after also releasing the V-Down), and still no luck
What for an annoying problem

Keeps resetting..help please..

Greetings fellow geeks.
i have a problem with this i9500..
it was working fine, suddenly it resets.
it keeps resetting every 4 seconds.
won't let me go to recovery.
i can go to download mode. but it won't respond to volume button, and resets after 4 seconds.
i have a custom ram on it.
if i place a battery back in, it will power on and keeps resetting every 4 second.
what should i do?
Maybe your power button stuck in? But if you can enter download mode then not I guess. You can always flash original firmware if you haven't necessary data on it.

Ok sorry my friend, read that you can use download mode well. I think there is something with your power button. Did you drop your phone? It shouldn't reset every time in every state, that looks like hardware failure. You can easly open your phone with little screwdrivers, but you will lose your warranty. If your power button is broken you can always order new ones from China, I did it with $1,3 (power and volume).

if i may say something, the button isn't stuck.. it's pretty clicky and sounds like working fine. is it possible the cause is coming from something else?

No it's your power button for sure.
I had that issue with my S3 LTE. It is indeed the power button since it does exactly the same that my did, try to use some alcohol in a swab and pass on the button (let it penetrate the button area, next click several times to try to clean the button from inside).
Good luck.

I have the same problem with my i9505, I always fix it like this:
1) remove the battery
2) let the phone rest w/o the battery for min. 10min
3) put the battery in and try to go in recovery
4) if you can wipe cache and try to turn it on
If the problem happens again:
1) remove battery
2) short the pins like this x/-/x/- , then x/x/-/- and then -/-/x/x (x is the connected pin) with something that conducts electricity like a metalic ring or high resistor or s/t
3) do step 3) from the previous one
(Anyways what you do is that you drain the capacitors in the phone, and on the power button, that capacitor is the main problem)
If that doesn't help, then try to leave it w/o the battery overnight
EDIT: well that is not a permanent fix, the fix is probably that you need a new power button, or in the worst case a new phone
