[Q] Please HELP before i flash a new rom! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

i have had my s4 for a while and originally had revolt on it, it was good but had a lot of small bugs that annoyed me. now im running liquidsmooth and its been my driver for a long time. its starting to get buggy on me and im bored of it. i have been away for some time so help me figure out what i want to do now please!
do i need to update MDL to MD9?
im running TWRP recovery, any significant reason to switch to CWM or Philz?
Is there any inverted gapps available?
is there any themed swype available?
im thinking of going with PAC rom as it seems it has the most of everything in one. any feedback or bad experiences with this rom?
if i go with pac to you recommend switching kernels? like chronic kernel or anything? or is stock on there good?
do any roms have the active notification screen like the moto x yet?
do any ASOP roms have a working IR blaster so i can use a tv remote?
also for myboy free (GBA emu) if i back it up with TB will it also save the game saves? game saves are not in the app but through the actual game.
SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!!! THANKS

Search.
Its your best friend.

Seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if a mod closed this thread. Do your own research. The info is already there and quite easy to find through search

[Q] Advice for a ROM

Hi guys...
I have a N7 16Gb from october and I think thare's not a real reason to change the rom on this device...except the tablet ui and the general fun to make it!
Well...
I'm not here to ask you guide etc. but an advice.
What custom rom do you advice? many talk about Paranoidandroid but I try it on an old Galaxy Scl and it was pretty horrible and unstable...but on nexus seems the rom most supportend and with much more feature...
Or I'm attracted by the Dirk AOKP that seem pretty good....
Beside this....it's difficult also the kernel decision...
Franco Kernel? or M3 or Trinity? I'm not interested in overclock...
thanks to all in advance
no one?
No one is answering because there are a ton of these threads asked all the time. There is no best Rom or Kernel. Try searching and see what features you like or what sounds interesting and then just install it and see for yourself.
I personally like the Omega 3 kernel, OC is optional and it has just about every scheduler/governor you could possibly want. Performance and battery life are pretty much on par with the other top kernels. I haven't tried any ROMS mainly because the 2 I flashed ended up boolt-looping. So I am using the stock with some pretty major tweaks. I am a DEV on other sites and once I jump through the hoops to be able to post in developer forums I will be posting my own ROM. OC is for people who don't know how to optimize. *cough*

Modaco custom ROM (currently version Jr13) is light, mostly stock, extra features that help me are- prerooted, enhanced power menu, tweaked youtube app for video preload, enhanced quick settings panel, comes with gapps etc.
Modaco cyanogenmod custom ROM (currently version r4) consumes more processing power, based on CM 10.1 so has all its features, prerooted, more enhanced power menu(with screenshot and extended desktop options), tweaked youtube, enhanced quick settings(devoid of vol control), comes with gapps, comes with cyanogenmod file manager etc.
MCR Jr13 and MCMCR r3 are interchangeable with dirty flash so I get to retain all my apps.
M-kernel (currently a33 version) gives me ample undervolting option (lp, cpu, gpu, ram), and I can set minimum brightness with rootdim, so I can extend my battery life.

Don't know why people make thread to ask others what's best rom, kernel... Answers will be different from users and depends what they prefers, so it'll be difficult to make a choice because every answers won't be the same. What I did when i wanted to choose was reading threads and try by myself to see what I liked. Sorry if my answer will not help you to choose but it's the best i can advise you. Hoping you find what best suits you.
Phone: GT-I9100P
Kernel: Dorimanx
ROM: 4.2.1 Vanilla RootBox
Tablet: Nexus 7
Kernel: M-Kernel
ROM: 4.2.1 AOKP PUB
MOD: JusTunBean
Xenon
Im usin Xenon HD its a 4.2 rom (aokp base) and it's very customizable for your likes. You should give it a try.:cyclops:
If you are doing any ROM other than stock, I suggest AOKP for sure. It has a ton of mods for your ui and allows a lot of customizing. Make sure you get 4.1.2 milestone version and get your gapps as well or you won't have necessary files. Hope this helps look in the aokp official thread for download

thanks to all...
all advices are really usefull to understand the mod world...
I was intent to install an AOKP rom, but I don't really understand the difference...
I would like to try the the paranoid but i think is AOSP...
for AOKP I don't know what rom to try...I see the Dirty AOKP but I'm not sure....
There's also one called smooth ROM check it out, you should search YouTube to see if you like it. personally I'm back to the to the 4.1.2 stock rom because on aokp it wasn't allowing me to install some APK's from the play store that i really wanted. it said they werent compatible with my device when I knew they were compatible with n7.. I wish there was a way around that but nobody on here would tell me if there was or not when i posted a thread asking... anyways hope you find what you are looking for and I do suggest checking YouTube first for custom Roms for nexus 7 before flashing over hella different ones it would take less time, peace and good luck!

Most Stable ROM...

I know this is another one of those very opinionated threads, but this isn't for MY phone. I rooted my friends Fascinate over a year ago and flashed a ROM for him. It did really well for a long time, but just recently his phone started getting really buggy and slow. Just wondering what you guys recommend for a really nice stable, but quick ROM?
Also...bit off topic, but are there any good Audio Mods for the fascinate..?
Any of the ones on the main page of the development section are quality Roms some may have a quirk or two but generally nothing that can't have a workaround,,
you just really have to embrace what jellybean is and what the developers have done for us

Dam they got Jelly Bean running on the Fascinate?? I had a Fascinate way back in the day before I got a Thunderbolt...couldn't even get Jelly Bean on that haha...now I have a Nexus...like I said this is for my friend. I running PA on my nexus and LOVE it so maybe I will try that on his phone, but thanks for the suggestions!
Oh...what recovery do you recommend? Do you have to use ODIN at all...I don't have it setup on my computer and I remember it being a pain in the ass to setup and use

Ahh...well he is on an ICS ROM...I will just go the ODIN way I suppose
Last part of section 4...
*For those currently on a ICS rom and want to upgrade to a Jellybean rom or vise versa. Just download the rom of choice to sd, boot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, then flash rom...should be no need to go all the way back to stock unless your having alot of issues with force closes and what not.
Only thing to add is you'll need to flash the ROM 2-3 times because of a new partition layout...
Don't do anything extra... And it should work fine

So keep flashing it over in recovery 2-3 times??
Any recommendations on a good recovery for him?
I highly recommend CM 10.1, although I had a weird issue lately where no matter what performance settings I was using my music would skip around every 10 min or so, but I'm sure jt will find a fix for it eventually. If you don't constantly play music on your phone like I do then you probably wouldn't mind that little gripe. I've been on Helly Bean now for a few days with no problems, which is basically CM 10.1 with a few extras and Devil Kernel baked in. I know Paranoid is a really good rom, but I haven't tried it myself. We're lucky enough to have great developers that all make excellent roms so just take your pick of the popular ones and have at it

He just means it will abort the flash to warn you that your phone is being switched to the new partition layout and you will lose all your data... it's just a formality and nothing to worry about. All you need to do is flash again after the warning and it'll do it for real
---------- Post added at 11:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 PM ----------
Oh and as far as audio mods, there are a few out there (Acid mod I think?) but if you use CM 10.1 it will come with DSP manager which lets you tweak it a bit, but personally I just use Power Amp and the EQ on that is just phenomenal and I don't even feel like I need anything else because of how good it works.
Alright thanks guys! Just trying to figure out what recovery to upgrade to...maybe TWRP?
Yes it will pop up and say error 7 or warning, but just go ahead and chose reinstall the same zip file again... And it will give error again, so repeat... After the 3rd time,,,, then reboot
The cwm recovery is built in
The hellybean roms have their own with some extra options,,, plus if you want to flash their kernel,,, there is a thread with the info

If you want to use TWRP then go to this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133358 but as hhp already pointed out, each rom comes bundled with it's own recovery so the only time you need to really flash your own is if you're coming from stock and flash CMW4 fixed for CM7

Ohh...weird...its been so long since I had a Fascinate and my TB and Nexus aren't that way haha. Thanks for all your help. I may just flash back to stock using Step 4 and then put PA on or something. His phone is pretty dam buggy, lots of force closes, or permission errors so I figure I will try to get it as cleaned up as possible
if lack of activity is any indicator(as in not too much complaints) then I just want to cast a vote for JellyBro. I am now on 2-25-13 version and its been pretty smooth and solid for me thus far.
it;s working well enough that I was considering setting up a device for my mom(who defintely doesn't have the patience for stuff that doesn;t work).
I use GeeWiz 2.8.1... it has Voodoo audio, and is super fast and smooth. Along with the KGB FA16 Kernel... All of which can be found in my sig including the theme.
I've tried dozens of mtds e.g ICS, JB, etc. and even GeeWiz 4.2... but the GW 2.8.1 is the most stable and fastest. You can also go with 2.9 from the main GeeWiz 2 thread. Even though it's Gingerbread... it's up there with all the newer roms for speed and dare I say even more stable than most newer Roms. AND.. Everything works... unlike a lot of the newer JB roms out there.
Hope that helps.

from what I remember, your going to have to ODIN back to the stock EH03 then up to geewiz , this is because both of partitioning and recovery differences.
.
You don't have to Odin back to stock. The link in my dropbox is a full wipe odin... it's just like going back to stock but not. Just odin the tar and you're good to go. Full eh03 support.

Best Advice for New Nexus 10 Owner

Well, my Nexus 10 is in the mail direct from Google! Believe it or not, they were actually the cheapest source for the 16GB model. I not worried about storage space since I have 32GB now on my phone and max out at about 4GB.
At any rate, I am both excited and nervous. I have had a Samsung Nexus phone for about a year and super happy; however I have read horror stories about this tablet (not connecting to WiFi, random reboots, etc.). So, where should I start?
If anyone can give me a bullet point list of the best ROM, kernel, GApps, etc I'd appreciate it!!
AOKP and Pa are the best ROMs for me, combined with trinity 10 or Kt kernel
This is by far the best tablet I have owned.
Welcome to the world of Nexus 10

Great! I was hoping to hear AOKP. That's what I use on my phone so it will be nice to have on the tablet too.
Official downloads from AOKP.co website or do you have a favorite unofficial version from here?
There are several aokp builds. The normal one a couple pub ones which are great and the one I use from ktoonsez and task650 so you have choices for your choices

This is our first tablet so I got a 3yr warranty with full accident coverage from Squaretrade. They issue you a check for your original purchase price if you break it anytime in that 3yrs.
anyway - TX3L or TX3G version of Trinity kernel?
Look farther in the thread. There is a tx4g that you want to use

Every phone I have had that has both an available AOKP and CM rom always wins hands-down when running AOKP. I'll keep flashing a CM10 rom every 2 or three months to see if they have improved, but within a day I am back on AOKP. Will stick with it until I see CM catch up and surpass AOKP. Thanks everyone! It arrives tomorrow...almost called in sick (ha, not).

I personally use sentinel ROM. It doesn't have all the aokp features and it uses the crappy new ui BUT it seems to be the most stable especially since I use my tablet and ps3 controller to play games all day. If anyone has a better ROM to try I'm open to suggestions

I understand your concern, I was the same before I bought mine not too long ago, but I had to have it. And to be honest I was very pleasantly surprized I was only on stock for a week or so, but I dont think I ever experienced a random reboot, and I don't have any issues at all with the screen or WiFi.
I've tried a few ROMs and kernels like CyanogenMod and Paranoid, but right now I'm running AOKP Project Unicorn Butter from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095222 , but it looks like you're already familiar with AOKP It has been the smoothest, snappiest ROM so far, and if you run it with the KTManta kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015874 , its the best android experience you'll have ever had. I know it's mine.
Thank you everyone - Last question: What's all the buzz about "Aroma"? What exactly is it? Is it worth flashing?
Aroma is just an installer. It comes up when you flash certain ROMs etc. Allows you to install several things right there before booting add launcher/apps/etc

Sorry to be such a noob, but could someone tell me how/link me to install a kernal such as ktoonsez's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015874
I am not clear if I can install just the kernal to the stock image? (I am comfortable rooting w/ SuperSU and I am comfortable installing TWRP.)
Then additionally I am not clear on how I choose the different kernals when using a custom rom? I mean not using the Aroma installer. (Is it done the same way as installing a custom kernal to stock, IE same answer as my above question?)
TIA all

Do you all recommend twrp? I have been using CWRTouch 6.0.2.3 on my phone since it came out w/o any problems so I flashed the Nexus 10 version to the tablet and it works great. The only thing I am missing is 'wipe battery stats' but everything else is there.
Any reason to use twrp instead?

General ROM discussion

Just unlocked bootloader and hooked up CM 10. 1 by epinter. Really impressed on the smoothness. In was skeptical it would be noticeable but boy it is.
But I use my maxx for business and need something as close to as reliable as stock that I can get.
Is there any ROM out there that takes advantage of unlock boot L on 4.2.2 but has everything working?
Right now I have no voice search or voice typing, GPS and the camcorder. I think I read the camcorder was an issue for all 4.2.2? But what about GPS and voice stuff on CM 10.1?
Sent from my XT926 using Tapatalk 2
I've been wondering the same sort of thing -- now that lots of custom ROMs are available for the XT926, which are the most stable, which have the fewest non-functioning elements, etc. XenonHD is my first custom ROM for my Maxx HD. I followed the directions, used TWRP, wiped everything before installing, installed gapps at the same time, wiped Dalvik and cache again before rebooting. It has operated smoothly for a week. Video camera does not work, as reported. GPS, messaging, data, camera, voice typing, Bluetooth ALL work fine. No FCs at all. I don't think that my battery life is quite as good as on a stock ROM and I think my signal strength is slightly weaker too. Tons of customizations, which is interesting. But -- how does XenonHD compare to CM10.1, ParanoidAndroid, Carbon, etc etc?
As of right now, there is simply not a fully 100% 4.2.2 port yet. They are close, some have fixed minor bugs, mostly found in CM10.1, but still I cannot get the full functionality that I can get with a custom 4.1.2 ROM, more specifically the 9.16.6 is the best currently, but most have been switching over to the newer 9.16.9 version.
Eclipse rom
nitroglycerine33's Eclipse rom based on 4.1.2 works awesome for me.
I tried most of the ports of 4.2.2 My picks would be Liquid,Xenon,CM10.1 with that said I am running as my daily the Stock build 9.8.2Q from firmware thread gives me best signal with everything working until we can get a custom kernel for 4.2.2 which I look forward my device is an XT925

Stock Featured S4 Rom

Guys
What's the popular opinion out there on the best S4 Rom with all the TouchWiz features from stock, but optimized and with an option to install custom Kernel like KT's + WiFi tethering?
Thanks.
Right now it's so early in the mods, there all pretty close. I've been using ShoStock and love it. I've tried most of the other Roms as I am a flashaholic, but I always come back to ShoStock. Thank goodness for backup/restore. Lol
