[Q] NST Glowlight 1.2.1 will not install - Nook Touch General

Hi, I have a new UK (Argos.co.uk) NST Glowlight whicvh shipped with v1.2.0 firmware.
I have followed the instructions here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175/
However after I copy the nook_1_2_update.zip file to the Nook and eject, nothing happens. The Nook goes to sleep after a few mins and just stays that way. I reconnected the device after a few hours and found the update.zip file was gone. I read on another thread to rename the file to nook_1_2_1_update.zip but exactly the same thing happened.
So I seem to be stuck on v1.2.0.
Any ideas?
Edit. Oops I had downloaded the firmware from the US B&N site rather than UK.
Would help if they had different filenames!
Problem solved.

[Q] Nook Color Firmware v1.4.1 update w/n2acard's cm7.x?

Has anyone attempted dual-booting the new Nook Color v1.4.1 Firmware w/ @Nook2Android cards yet? (announcement from @nookBN on twitter): Nook Color v1.4.1 Firmware Update Now Available for Sideloading
Specifically: Does the new Nook Color v1.4.1 Firmware update lock out n2acard's CM7.x dual-boot feature?
Recommendation: IF already running an n2acard CM7.x dual-booting Nook Color, Do NOT boot into emmc/NOOK until it is safely established and confirmed that you can do so, OR: do NOT allow emmc/NOOK to connect to WIFI as it will be pushed OTA through WIFI this week. Haven't seen anything on n2acards.com forums yet either.
As I rarely boot into emmc/NOOK this won't be too hard for me. Others may need reminding. YMMV.
Updated: NC update v1.4.1 w/n2acards cm7.x?
After catching up on the other Nook Forum threads:
It IS safe to update to Nook Color Firmware v1.4.1.
Just to be safe, I powered down my NC. Pulled my SD card. Did a manual update from my MacBook.
The update copied, updated, booted perfectly afterwards.
CM7 SD card booted aftwards with no problems.
Still a JR member, unable to post links yet. NC Firmware v1.4.1 is at the B&N's NC Software update page complete with instructions. YMMV, but I had no problems. All apps post update on both emmc & CM7 SD card work fine.
It even inspired me to put nookhoney on a separate SD card. It runs fine as well. Have been playing around with the Android SDK on my MacBook, playing with Honeycomb & ICS. Digging into the CM9 alphas to see what's left for an NC build attempt. yay. just sayin'
Hey man, a couple of us have had ClockworkMod reject the update... Did you run into this issue? Mine (same setup) tried to install the rom, showed the little package unzip animation, then an Exclamation point. It then went into Clockwork Mod, and told me that the ROM was unsigned.
Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't run into this. Let me do some digging and see what I come up with. Did you try switching your ROM back to stock, doing the B&N firmware upgrade, then work from there?
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
obviously i was hoping to avoid that... however I can give it a shot...
I think the main problem is that you got ripped off by N2A
Barnes & Noble Nook Color 1.4.1 fixed for CWM Recovery
Here is a link to the complete Barnes & Noble Nook Color v1.4.1 stock firmware:
http : //www . filefactory . com / file / c0caebb / n / nook-complete-restore-1.4.1.zip
Just remove the extra spaces to reconstruct the URL.
The manifest and updater-script contained within have been updated to work with the install ZIP file function of CWM Recovery. You will not get the error message that the update is unsigned.
Would somebody please mirror the above file somewhere to another host, as it will be gone from FileFactory after 90 days?
Thanks.

Hey. I downloaded that file and have been trying to get it to load. Long story short. I was unsuccessful. I was under the impression I didn't have to re-root nook and that all I had to do was copy nook-complete-restore-1.4.1.zip to my nook color or the sd card or something. But I kept running into problems. Are there a set of instructions directly for nook-complete-restore-1.4.1.zip?? Much thanks. Just trying to avoid unrooting, factory stock, updgraeadalskdj ;akld ;akld all the work having to do the work as mentioned above. In short---what am I doing wrong? Much Thanks for any help.

Someone else may correct me if I'm wrong here -- you must boot your Nook Color with the Clockwork Mod Recovery utility running from a bootable SD card -- the firmware's .ZIP file should be on that same SD card so that you can access/install it with the utility. That said, because the firmware is to be installed to your Nook Color's internal memory (eMCC), your rooted setup will most likely be overwritten, and then you'll have to re-root your Nook Color after the B&N stock firmware has been verified as successfully installed.
I'm not sure how much effort is involved to back up apps and settings, install the stock firmware, re-root the Nook Color, and then restore the backed-up settings and apps -- it may or may not be worth all the effort.

[Q] Fresh Nook, what nooter/rooter program to use?

So last night I attempted to use the autonooter for 1.0.1 on my Nook Color. Unfortunately the Nook said it was out of battery midway through and it corrupted the Nook, so that it wouldn't boot. Fast forward to today, I've managed to wipe it and get it running with 1.0.0.
I'm a little confused on how to proceed. Should I use Autonooter, or is manualnooter now considered better? Also, if I need to update my firmware, how can I do that? Do I just load it onto the SD card and then have it boot from there? I've been searching the forums for hours, and while there are many explanations, none are too clear or concise for someone who's coming from 1.0.0, since I can't just install 1.1 direct from B&N anymore.
Thanks for any help.

The Nooter packages are version specific based on what B&N firmware version you have on your device.
AutoNooter 2.12.15 is for B&N firmware version 1.0.0
AutoNooter 2.12.25 is for B&N firmware version 1.0.1
AutoNooter 3.0.0 is for B&N firmware version 1.1.0
ManualNooter 4.6.16 is for B&N firmware version's 1.2.0 and 1.3.0
ManualNooter 5.01.19 is for B&N firmware version's 1.4.1 and 1.4.2
If you have not installed ClockWorkMod Recovery onto the device, then to update your device, you will download the 1.4.2 firmware from the B&N website, LINK. You will place that update file into the root directory of your device, not on the SD card. Once you have placed that file into the root directory, remove the usb cable, and press the power key to turn the screen off. Sit back, and wait for the device to automatically update itself to firmware version 1.4.2.
Once you have updated your device to firmware version 1.4.2, just follow the direction for ManualNooter 5.02.19, LINK

Nook Simple Touch hangs during boot after failed rooting with TouchNooter 2.1.31

Just came home from USA where I got a Nook Simple Touch (1.1.0).
Tried to root it with TouchNooter 2.1.31 following the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
In step 8 below,
7. Power on your Nook Simple Touch.
8. You should see the new TouchNooter boot screen, follow all instructions.
9. That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.it just hangs. There was a short black flash, the instructions were written on the screen, and nothing more happened. After a while (30 min. ?), I removed the SD-card and tried to reboot. The Nook started to boot (rooted), however, it never completed the boot. Just hanged.
I have retried the rooting.
I have tried to restore the factory settings (method #3 in this page http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_restore_to_stock).
It still just hangs. (After a factory reset, it hangs with the message:
Read Forever
Your NOOK is starting up...Any idea what i should do to get it working again?
And maybe more important, what I should not do, so I don't mess up more?
I haven't tried any other ways to root the Nook, nor have I tried for instance n2T-Recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289233
This is my first Android device, and maybe I should have been more careful. However, I didn't expect any difficulties after i read
http://lifehacker.com/5889158/turn-a-99-nook-into-a-fully-fledged-android-tablet-in-four-easy-steps
and since I have had no problems jailbreaking a number of iPhones and iPads.
You might try this.
Check out this. I tried this and it worked.
I am new to this, as well. All that is outlined below, I have done within the last 24 hours.
This forum entry helped me. The links to the nook image are broken but I found the right image after a web search.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289233
After restoring my Nook Simple Touch with the image "n2T-Recovery_0.1.img". I upgraded my Nook's firmware using the links on the B&N Nook site. When I rebooted the Nook, it already allowed me to select "ADW.launcher" or "Home".
Just to be thorough, I went through the whole procedure outlined by LifeHacking again.
Things seemed to work after that. There is likely something missing from "auto-nooter-2.12.25.img"
Good luck.
I had the same issue with a brand new Nook Simple Touch earlier this week. Factory software was 1.0.1. After recovering using the "8 times reboot method" I upgraded to the B&N 1.1.2 using these instructions http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175/ and re-applied the TouchNooter instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
All works fine now... debating whether to apply the pinch-to-zoom patch now...

HI,
First time I tried the setup, I got the error where my nook stuck at "read forever" screen. But it got automatically restored to factory setting after several restarts. So I saw your post, upgraded my device to 1.1.2 using the link provided but got the exact same issue after rooting. After removing the SDcard and restarting, my screen is stuck at "Read Forever - Your NOOK is starting up...". Please let me know if you know of any other solutions.
Thanks.

[Q] Root Simple Touch 1.2.0

I have a nook simple touch (not the glowlight version) with the firmware version 1.2.0. I tried to root it with touchnooter but got stuck in the bootup screen. I was therefore wondering if anyone have a way to root 1.2.0, since the only thread i have seen that dealt with this was for the glowlight version, and i'm not sure if the same methods work for both versions.
Boot from the noogie disk.
Make a backup - the file should be about 2 gig.
Test a restore - you should be able to restore to a 2gig or larger medium (sdcards work well for testing) and get 8 parititions.
Once you've got a working, viable backup, you're ready to modify. There is no universal factory restore disk, hence the note of caution.
That said, tinynoot should work on the 1.2 devices - it works on both the NST and NSTG and with a very minor change, on the Nook color as well.
It gives you root and not much else - no Android market and the Amazon appstore is apparently a challenge with non-US releases of the device.

Same problem here. (NST fw 1.2)
Touchnooter and MinimalNooter causes Nook to hang at boot.
EDIT: I just checked the procedure on 2 nooks. One from US and one from GB.
On GB nook rooting works fine. (factory recovery image 1.2)
On US it hangs at boot. (factory recovery image 1.1)

I haven't used TinyNoot, only Touchnooter and MinimalNooter (CWM).
Tonight I'll try 'tinynoot' and post result as an 'edit' to this message.
Rooting US version of NST 1.2 with GlowNooter-1.5.26 ?
This post suggested that GlowNooter can be used to root US version of NST 1.2.
Has anyone succeeded with this path?
I will be following this thread, I just got a nook today and would love to root it so I can sideload mango on it.
eventually 'tinynoot' worked for me.
Glow nooter stopped at 'Read Forever '.
If your nook is already rooted 'tinynoot' won't work either.
You have to apply 'tinynoot' to a clean (unrooted) nook (after recovery to factory image (6x reboot) and manual update to fw 1.2)

I assume that a previously rooted 1.1.x NST following an (OTA or manual) upgrade to 1.2 would become un-root & "clean" in the process and hence can use tinynoot?

Yes, you lose 'root' (su) but all apk's stored in '/data/app/' remain untouched.
I had to perform a full recovery because installing 1.1 with CWR does not remove all of the packages/files introduced with '"not working" Nooters'.
Another option to clean up the system (other than recovery) is to wipe out '/system' partition using CWR and than install FW 1.1 from CWR (nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip). Then 1.2 and then 'Tinynoot 1 + 2'.
Hi folks, I recently bought a Nook ST 1.2.0 and easily got it rooted with Tiny Noot.
My problem now is, how do I install new apps? Say I've got an APK file, what do I do with it? I tried putting one on a SD card and putting it in the Nook, but there doesn't seem to be a file explorer installed with Tiny Noot so I can't browse to it and install it any way. I'm in the UK so the Amazon App Store doesn't work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Matt.

I believe you can install apps using adb push.
What I don't know is how one goes about finding and determining apps that are compatible with 1.2. Perhaps one approach is to start with apps that are included/packaged with other NST rooting tools such as Minimal-Touch.
Seems like you guys finally have the software we have in the UK. Please refer to my thread for all I know at the moment. This includes a few guides to get started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961835

Just confirming I've seen similar on a US nook simple touch. Factory firmware image is 1.1.
touchnooter 2.1.31 with the 1.1 version installs, but the nook gets stuck in a boot loop on restart.
then did a factory image / reset and upgraded manually to the 1.2 version
In this case, touchnooter boots but never reaches the black screen flash. An attempt to restart the nook then results in a hang in the 'read forever' screen - not surprised, since I dont think touchnooter was successful.

My holy grail fix for a messed up NC

After pouring thru countless threads, trying to follow different and confusing instructions, clicking on endless dead links and missing files... I finally found success today with an easy fix to restore my NC back to working order (stock). My NC was really screwed up, and files in root were missing-- but this boot image fixed it all. To help anyone else who is having the same issues here are the instructions (hope it will get pinned).
First, check out this Youtube video by Ray Waldo-- http://youtu.be/cmuftsM4xpc
His website is down at the moment where the file you download and create a boot image is.. but I found it listed here on xda in another thread--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130 (go to post#8 where you can download the image for the 16gb version)
Are you using a Nook Tablet or a Nook Color? All the info you are providing is for the Tablet... perhaps you have a Tablet and that's why it got messed up in the first place... using NC ROMs on a NT
