Build Prop DPI And Battery Life - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I changed my DPI to 360 over the weekend and love the results. I told my friend about it and he said that this will crush my battery life. I haven't had the phone long enough to get a good battery reading so I'm not sure.
Is it true? Will changing the DPI hurt battery life?
tHanks,
Matt

I don't see how. I've changed the dpi on every device I've owned over the last few years and never experienced any battery related side effects.
On the N3 my wife and I get pretty much the same battery stats. Mine is set to 320 and hers is default.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

I would say no. Y would it? Screen resolution is still 1920x1080. Still same amount of pixels to push. DPI is just making things smaller.

Just wondering, what method did you use to change your smspi. Build.prop?
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

Yes. .. build. Prop

I have my Note3 set to 240 and I like the size of things but when I rotate the phone I always get a "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped." with only the choice of OK.
This is annoying, anyone know of a remedy?
Thanks in advance

Live wallpaper for everyday use

I have no prior experience with live wallpapers before getting my Vibrant. Do any nexus one users or other 2.1 early adopters have experience with battery life and using a live wallpaper for everyday use?
My battery info shows that the live wallpaper only uses about 2% of the battery but my screen takes up like 40%, isn't there some sort of connection?
What is your question?
-bZj
I'm using the "Ocean Waves" live wallpaper and haven't had any problems with short battery life or low system resources because of it. It's fun to play with and great for showing off to people and has made one iPhone 4 user actually hang his head in shame after talking about how great it was that he can have a background on his phone now.
I use nexus works fine battery life is good

I don't know exactly how you find that info buy under battery usage, "magic smoke" set to red and it says my display has only used 9% of the battery... but I think that's not even close to the values you are giving...
EDIT: Yeah, that's the wrong stats... where do you get that info?
I have had good battery life with this thing so far (as much as I play with it), but that is only in comparison of a g1 I got just after they first came out that has been hacked to hell and back...
i like the ocean waves one...
Thanks for the feedback guys. I plan on keeping my live wallpaper. After using them, its hard to go back to static wallpapers.
If you want maximum battery saving from your wallpaper... true black doesnt use any battery. Google true black in your phone browser, save, set as wallpaper. I havent had any problems with battery from live wallpapers though..

what about new ones? or only stock ones available ? New live ones would be cool that use less power etc.

to avoid overheating maximum brightness has been reduced

Anybody else experiencing this issue?
I looked everywhere but found no real solution.......
Tried flashing new rom no luck ...
This was quite common with the S2, what you can try is to power off your phone and remove the battery for 20-30mins, if the same issue occurs either the battery sensor is messed up or IDK.
Happened with my infuse in the summer out in the sunlight and i posted a topic in there about it. They say its normal
Well I tried this still not working .....

Same problem here. Even i charge my Note also is heating. Dun know why.
Screen bright again
I dont know what cause this problem, but I got the same thing on my phone. A temporarily solution is to install Brightness Level from Android Market. It does not fix the problem in the system settings but it makes your screen 100% bright again

Problems that go away on their own, come back on their own...
Is there a way to remove this protection?
When I have the gps in the car I get that all the time, even if the phone is not hot at all, very annoying because with the sun and sunglasses -> cant see the screen very well.. stupid!
If you have one of those tpu softcases you will not know whether or not your note is hot just by the feel. Those cases are terrific insulators. I had overheating with the Note on GPS and charging. It actually shut down once and dropped out of the GPS signal a couple of times. Took the Nillikin case off and found that the whole phone was very hot.
After the case was removed I continued the trip with four days of continuous GPS and on charge with no problems. Even with the TPU naked, it still got pretty warm at the top half of the phone, but worked fine with brightness set pretty high. I think this is normal for the Note
[FiX] Galaxy Note ICS OVERHEATING PROBLEM SOLVED
[FiX] Galaxy Note ICS OVERHEATING PROBLEM SOLVED:
1 Go to settings- developer options - UNCHECK "Dont keep activities"
2 Use go launcher ex (or some other good launcher...) instead of default launcher
3 Instal from google play android assistant and use it to clean cache and stop most of background process
4 install from google play "cpu master free" (MUST HAVE ROOTED PHONE) and set 1000 MHz for MAXIMUM, and check box "set on boot"
P.S. DO NOT expect that your phone will be cold as ice after you do this...
ICS is build that you can use max. out of dual core, and galaxy note is pretty slim and back is made out of plastic...All that increase heating problem...
Hope i helped! =D
download the free version of "watchdog" and it will give you an alert if any software uses a lot of cpu power, you might have to go into setting and add system process to the watch list, you can also whitelist and blacklist program so they are killed as soon as they cpu usage goes above a certain level, though this might be pro version only.
Only use watchdog to find the problem and then remove it as it can use quite a bit of cpu power itself.

Having modded the framework for my rom to include lower brightness mod i can say that the values set in the decompiled framework are virtually the same as gb values infact brightness was increased at the lowest level from 32 in gb to 40 in ics with powersaving mode set to 32 in ics

I see no difference at 38 and below in LQ3. The lowest dim at 39. At 40 the brightness will then increase.

Hi legion =)
I most often use phone at 100% brightness simply just because I like it when the screen is bright and clear, colors appear nicely too on high brightness. And outdoors in sunlight its sometimes hard to see whats on the screen even though brightness is set to 100%. You were right about the burn-in. Can see some burn-in if looking very carefully, depending on what colors there are on the screen over the burn-int areas. But still they are so weak and hard to notice even when you know where to look for those areas that I will probably have bought a galaxy note 2 or maybe even 3 before they appear clearly visible and too annoying to endure

Nexus 7 Battery Problem?

Hello, I have a Nexus 7 16Gb. I have been using it for about 20 days. Battery life was amazing. All of a sudden yesterday I noticed that i had a huge battery drain when using it. Installing Battery Calibration from the play store I saw that my maxumum charge was only 4 mV while it should be around 4200 mV. Is there a way to fix it or my battery is faulty. Have in mind that I have rooted it, and I have Codename Android rom, along with motley kernel v 1.1.1. I dont know if its a coincidence but just before I notice that drain I followed that guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30864511#post30864511
Any ideas on how I should proceed?

There's no way it would run on 4 mV.
What app does it say is eating the battery in Settings -> Battery[/b[?

wow..well, apps do mess up sometimes.
and I dunno about everyone else, but to me the "Screen" looks like it's using a ton of battery. do you just leave the screen on all day doing nothing? the next runner up is only at 3%...seems a bit odd to me. Is the brightness all the way up or something?
Anyway if you reflash the stock rom and/or try a different ROM and you still have this problem, I think you will be able to RMA it.
did you get it thru Google Play?
Also, approx how long does the battery last on a full charge?

Well when the screen is about 35% brightness. And I didn't mean the screen is draining battery. I meant when I am actually using the tablet its draining battery faster. I already flashed another rom and its the same. 3mv when its unplagged and 4 mV when its near charged...Do you thing I should flash the official image? I bought it from Tesco in the UK. Will I have a problem changing it?
Edit: Is it possible that the voltage reading is correct and the way its displayed is wrong? maybe the kernel reads 4V, but the app displays it as 4 mV? Any kernel experts? Thanks!
My N7 keeps showing 100% even though it's being used. :\ what's going on
Mine looses power when I have it charging lol

Disable auto low brightness on low battery

When my battery reaches 5% the screen dims (probably to the lowest brightness possible) so much that when outside the phone is not usable because I can't see anything and the brightness slider from the notification bar disappears. Is there a way to disable this? btw power saving is turned off.
Also does anybody knows if the phone slows down cpu/gpu when on low battery because I've been playing some games on low battery and I think they were a bit "laggy" but power saving was turned off.

I hate this feature as well, but it's on all phones that run android
It's built into the system
At 5% power, brightness goes to minimum
It's good feature, but when you have extended battery, it's really annoying with still a lot of power left. Screen becomes pretty dark.
And the fact that power of extended battery does not show correctly, it's 5% us not even like 10, but could actually be like 20, makes it even a bigger problem

Any ideas how to fix this issue ?
There's no actual way to override low power at 5%
It's built-in android.
If you really need backlight, get app in market, called adjbrightness, that's one word.
It can override brightness to any percentage you details yourself, it actually guess from 0-255, but it won't Activate auto brightness, since that blocked by android due to low power.
So just use that apply if you really need more light on screen till next charge cycle.

Of course it works, and you to need to be rooted
Maybe you didn't gave apply root permissions or denied them when it asked for root.

What ROM are you running?
Stock GS4 or something custom?
Are you using any apps that control brightness?

That's what I've thought
You need stock rom and stock kernel
Otherwise, everything is messed up.
You don't have necessary modules for the program to work with.

This app worked for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.pruss.superdim
5% low battery no brightness adjustment
This is absolutely bs! I really can't stand samsung for doing this the only thing that I would say that puts samsung a downfall. I tried to do the same thing and rooted or not makes no difference. My guess is that it must be custom rom med or at least hack the binary and system to customize. Example remove enabled 5% lowest brightness from the system and identifying what the name of the file of system thats corsing the problem.
worked for me!
Wow you are my saviour. I've been having a problem with my battery showing a fualty value after rooting my galaxy tab 4 with stock ROM and kernel. My battery always reads 1% even though I charged it not too long ago. I can finally use my device again! Thanks so much!

This works great on rooted Galaxy Note 4 with stock rom. I'm using a zerolemon battery on it and it stays at 1% for hours. Finally a way around the screen dimming issue. Thank you.
