After rooting my device I was planning on installing AdFree, but for some reason it does not work. The phone is acting as if its validating the apps source - and since AdFree wants to be installed from an "unknown source" it refuses to install.
And yes, I have unchecked the verification, but the phone is acting as if the option is checked anyways.

verification should be checked
you should post this in Q&A
I think from the title of your post that you've gotten it backwards. You have to put a check in "allow installation of apps from unknown sources" in order for you to be able to install apk's from elsewhere than play store.
Oh, d'oh.
I'm sorry for being silly, both for posting in the wrong forum section and missing the obvious here.

I have a brand new AT&T Tab and need assistance. I am able to install non-marketplace apps using Sideload Wonder Machine however I have an interesting problem. I have an app (Lotus Notes Installer) that itself downloads another app and tries to install it but I get the dreaded "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market" message.
I have installed and run z4root and did a temporary root and also installed Superuser and Busybox and I still get the block message.
I am an Android newbie and don't know exactly how to proceed.
Thanks,
Richard
Hey Richard,
I had the same type of problem you did with my AT&T SGT. I also used the Sideload Wonder Machine. Here is link for my situation. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914697
Lotus Note Installer app downloading and installing another app? I have not hit that kind of hurdle. Can you get your hands on the apk that Lotus Note Installer is trying to download and install? Maybe you can istall that through sideload wonder machine?

This may be a stupid question, but have you set your Tab to allow installing of non-market apps? It's in Settings - Applications - check 'Unknown sources'
I do not see an option in my settings for "allow unknown sources", here's what I have:
Settings>Application
Manage Applications
- this doesn't appear to have any options for unknown sources settings
Running Services
- this is only for stopping running services
Development
- only options here are USB debugging, stay awake, allow mock locations
Am I missing something? or did AT&T remove the option from recently shipping tabs? (got mine yesterday)
I was able to sideload the Notes Installer, but once on the Tab, that application connects to the corporate server and attemtps to install another application on the Tab and that is where I get stuck.
Use SuperOneClick. This tool not only allow rooting but has option for allowing install of non-market apps. Simply select that option and it will update your systems settings to allow installs from other than market - sd card, web, etc. I am also using AT&T tab and this worked for me. Note it does not add the menu option of "allow apps from unknown sources" but trust me it works.
Sent from my SGH-I987 using XDA App
I installed the new firmware that allows me to make phone calls using the great instructions provided in theis forum and that resolved my issue and now i can install the Lotus Notes app with no problem. I am really liking the new O/S, it seems a little snappier than the the AT&T one.

You missed nothing - this is just another retarded AT&T carrier customization that they do on all their Android phones (AFAIK!).
Regards,
Dave
Yup, AT&T has removed the "install non-market apps" menu option from their retail Tabs. Very sad that they do that to their customers. I will say the I like their approach to selling the Tab, you pay the retail price and their is no contract to worry about and if you want data you pay on a month-to-month basis, exactly like they do with the Apple iPad. I cannot image getting a subsidized Tab from T-Mobile and getting stuck with a 2 year contract. In this market nobody keeps a phone or tablet for 2 years, it would be a dinosaur by then.
I'm hoping the flamers will be very gentle on me....
I know very little about command prompts and such and have managed to follow the directions to get my NC rooted using the latest manual nooter and even got my market fixed following the directions so all apps show up. I CAN follow directions, just having a hard time wrapping my head around the different acronyms and such.
Anyways, to my point. I can get angry birds and a few other apps to install. Also, whenever I try to install the Amazon appstore I get an error saying only "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market." I have put the checkmark in the advanced setting to allow the apps to be installed but it still won't install. Am I missing something? Is there a guide that makes sense out there and can break it down to me what I'm missing?
I apologize for bother everyone with my n00bness.....
is nookcolor tools in /data/app or /system/app?
from the nookcolor tools thread:
"new! to enable the non-market apps checkbox, you need to copy this apk to /system/app."

Since you asked in the right forum, no flames... You have to uncheck and then check that box in order to enable the installation....
I read in a post somewhere (sorry wasn't paying much attention to which one, because I'm on CM7), that there was problems installing certain apps with the SD card mounted after the 1.2 update and manual nooter.....Just something to check out.
is there anyway to enable unknown sources/non market apps . say i want to go and install an apk via www.4shared.com can i do it ?? thanks

Yeah, it would work fine. I did it for UberMusic Beta. Just gotta' go to Settings, Applications then allow access for apps that aren't from the market. Same goes for any Android phones you might have.
it worked
You are correct ! There is the option in setting to allow unknown apps . Thanks and BTW , I LOVE MY THRIVE !!!!! AMAZING AND IT IS LIGHT TO HLD AS WELL
unable to install 3rd party apps
When I click on an apk that's on my SD card I get an error that say "there is no associated application for this file type" any clue what happened here???
non-market app install problems?!?
I'm confused. I selected the "allow non-market" toggle in my settings. Nothing special needed. Am I missing something?

Well you already did it then. Now you can install Android apps from places like here, XDA, or other places that's not Android Market place. It still has to be an android app, an APK. I think some people confusing that it means you can download and install any OS app. Lmao that's not the case. If you they to install something not meant for android, it'll throw up an error or whatever.
It's still early where I live, so maybe I'm overly tired and missing something obvious...
However, I successfully enabled Developer Options, however, there is no "Unknown Sources" option or any ADB options?
Anyone out there seeing the same thing? Am I missing something?
for developer options go to settings ,about, click on build 10 times and developer options will show up in the Preferences section . unknown sources is there somewhere ... i checked it . i can't remember where ?
edit: download sideload launcher from chainfire (play store) and in the side load launcher their is google settings with verify apps and other settings
Thanks for the reply.
It's not there. I have Developer Options enabled. It is nowhere to be found...
maybe when you sideload a app you get the unknow source prompt . i can't remember where it was .

It does prompt you when you first try to install one.
unknown sources is avail in "security & restrictions" tab, along with verify apps and restricted profile.
Thanks!

Thank you! Appreciate your help on this.
Hello, just received my Fire HD 8 (2017), with Fire OS 5.3.3.0.
I am aware no root exists for that firmware at the minute. I was wondering if there was a way to stop OTA updates, so that if root comes out for that version I'm not stuck on the latest. Thanks.
I just received one as well and came here looking for similar info. Short of keeping the device turned off, I don't think there is a way to stop it from trying to update without root. However, you should be able to block the requests by using a no-root firewall app like NetGuard or NoRoot Data Firewall. See the following for some info:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/block-ota-updates-root-t3496861
(Note: one user there mentions the OP method no longer works on 5.3.3)
I received mine today as well, but unwittingly entered wifi details during the setup and, of course, the bloody thing updated straightaway. So now its on 5.4.
Just one thing. I have developer options and install from unknown sources enabled, but when I try to install any apk's copied from my phone using myappshare, the install button doesn't work. Is this because they were downloaded from the Google app store originally? None of the copied apps are available on the Amazon app store.

someone on a different thread mentioned that a reboot is needed after enabling the "install from unknown sources" for the install button to work.
