Ringtones - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an MP3 file and I'm trying to set it as the ringtone and I just can't get it to work. I put it in the ringtones file but it doesn't recognize it and says that the file type is not supported. Is there something I need to do to get it to work or does it just not like MP3s? Thanks.

OK to answer my own stupid question, as soon as I posted this I remembered the files in the ringtone folder were OGG files so I converted them to that and they work now. Maybe there's another way but at least I finally managed.

I transferred a number of ringtones from my Samsung Skyrocket over to the G2, put them in the Ringtone folder and none of them show to use as a ringtone.
I'll try converting them to OGG.
SO, I converted one of the files over from an MP3 (which I'd prefer not to do for time and because they take more room) to an OGG. I put it in the Ringtones folder, checked if it showed up in my sound settings to change ringtone, restarted the phone too...and it didn't show up. I've put ringtones onto many Android phones and never had a problem. What could I be doing wrong?

Custom SMS ringtones

Hello,
Where are the ringtones located on HD2?
I found some in Windows/rings and try to add custom ringtones (wma) to it but there are not showing in HTC ringtones setup menu.
Any idea?
Think you need to use .wave format and just copy the tone to the /Windows: Library. That will work.
You can use your personal music files to be your rington.
1. First copy the files to the /My Documents/My Ringtones folder on the phone.
2. Then from the Home screen slide to the Settings tabs > Sound & display > Ringtone
3. Select the file you copied over, and then tap Done.
Alternatively, you can set any music file as your ringtone by navigating to your music using File Explorer and tapping and holding the music file and selecting Set As Ringtone.
You can use a number of sound files that you downloaded from the Internet or copied from your computer, including *.wav, *.mid, *.mp3, and *.wma.

Convert your tone to .wave format and put it in the Windows library. It will work. I have done it plenty of times
** Try to use .wma format to, think it will work fine.

It's funny how even the simplest phones nowadays don't have any problems at all using mp3-files as sound-notifications, but a beast like HD2 can't support this

yes but we're livin' a WM world
(plus they have their own audio format, others don't. it's why they go to mp3 I guess)
It supports it

I used both ways and they both work fine for me. I dont use the WAV file anymore because the MP3 way is just easier for me as i use the MP3 trimmer to make my ringtones
If you go into the application data folder on the device, there's a folder named "sounds" put the mp3 sms in there and you'll be able to select them for sms notifications.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
it Worked

[Q] Ringtones and CM7

I haven't played with ringtones ( besides default ) until today. Well I have convinced myself that I am retarded. I did some searching, and I found out that the ringtones are in the /system/media/audio folder. Great ! Copy and paste, right ?!? Wrong. Putting an MP3 in there did nothing. Hmmm, all the files are ogg ... so I convert the MP3 to ogg. I changed permissions to match the default ones. Hell, I even made sure it had a capital letter. Now it does show up in the list, but not with the proper name. Its listed as "0". For God's sake, there has to be a way to fix this and there has to be an easier way to add mp3's/oggs for custom ringtones. Honestly, if I can get the Imperial March to play when the wife calls and the theme from Jaws to play when the mother in-law calls, I'll be a happy guy. Please tell me there's an app for that !
**rant off**
Ringdroid.
Also.. /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
Thank you. Hangs head in shame ...
By accident I found out if you long hold the song in the music player a menu will appear. Select use as ringtone. Showed up in the list perfect for me.

[Q] Tone picker not working on GB

When wanting to use a non-standard ringtone (not built in MP3/WAV) for notifications/rings, the built in app doesn't support the ability to choose sounds on your card.
That said, I used an app Tone Picker to choose these sounds, but when I use it on GB, it keeps locking up. Does anyone know an alternative to that program?
LOL - am I the only one that uses non-built in ringtones?

They don't show up in my list of ringtones to pick...
I had the same problem. Did a factory reset and it fixed it. Then I had to reload all my crap...
ok, well unknown to me you need to have sounds in the media/audio/notifications directory. I did it, but GMAIL keeps locking up when I select one of my sounds. It is a MP3, so I am going to convert it to WAV and see if that helps.
That was it. For some reason the GMAIL app (maybe more??) doesn't like notifications to be MP3 format. I converted it to WAV and it was fine.

How to keep non-standard ringtone?

I fancy a custom ringtone on my phone (see sig for details), but after every update I have to set it again, because otherwise it stays on 'unknown ringtone'; same goes for notifications.
I tried to use files on internal and on external sdcard, made me a flashable zipfile, too, that pushes the files to the correct folders in /system /media/audio/ - but no luck, the setting won't survive a system upgrade through OpenDelta
Any hints how to make it stick? I'd appreciate a lot
Do you have a "Ringtones" folder on your SD card? If you put it there it should be automatically indexed and stick after an OpenDelta update
I do, but it won't stick :-$
Put it on sd/media/audio/ringtones and it will stick.

Thanks for this, it worked however all the ringtones now show up in my music player. Adding a .nomedia file negated them showing up at all as ringtones.
Any way to have them visible to ringtones but hidden from music? Or can I not have it both ways?
Thanks in advance.

Use a music player with the ability to hide files/folders
How come apps like Facebook and any.Do have notifications in that folder that are not visible to my music player without the use of a .nomedia file?
Any way to mimic those?

Check their properties in a file explorer, you can hide them there (why didn't I think of this in my post above??)

I don't think I can change sd card content permissions, unless I'm missing something. I'm using es file manager.

Long press the file or folder you want to hide, select properties and enable hidden. On SD you have all permissions by default.

Can't set mp3 as ringtone

Can anybody help me? It seems impossible for me to set an mp3 as ringtone. No matter if I convert it to "ogg" or not. I put the file to "system>media >audio>ringtones, which should be the right path, I guess. I'm also able to choose that file but after rebooting it's gone. What do I do wrong?
Greets
Update: I just converted another mp3 to ogg and placed it in the right place. Now it even isn't shown when I try to chose it as ringtone. What could be the reason?
Anybody else facing those issues?

use ringdroid and you're done!
There are 2 ways:
1) Connect to phone to system and paste the mp3 in ringtones folder (internal memory).
2) Easier way: Download ES file explorer and navigate to the mp3 and play it in the app only. there you can see the option to set it as ringtone. Many music players also have this functionality but i only know about dbpoweramp.
