[Q] XXUBMG5 flashed to stock and unable to root - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I´ve had much grief with my phone this week. All due to incompetence most likely.
I´ve got a I9505 with the I9505XXUBMG5 baseband. Kernel is 3.4.0
I did flash the phone with some rom earlier this week, and prior to that i installed TWRP´s recovery.
I had that before aswell (the last time i managed to mess up flashing my phone. Maybe a pattern is starting to appear here?)
Anyway. I went as far as flashing the phone to my with providers stock rom that i got from sam-mobile. That went perfect. I still had TWRP and root. But i wanted different rom, so i went ahead and flashed it again that day, only to find out that it wasn´t the rom for me.
Luckily i had a backup made by TWRP, so i rolled back to the stock rom. And from here i´m unable to root.
No matter ho i try to root the phone, cf-root says passed. Yet rootchecker says i´m not. I´ve removed all su-apps i can. But superuser is still in the system. And Busybox won´t do anything when i start it.
Someone mentioned putting SuperUser directly to the sd-card and run the install directly from the phone. So i tried that.
And the binary i have is 1.56 (in other words old) . When i try to update the binary through Super User all goes well until gaining root access .
So the next thing to test is Superuser Update fixer. Still the same.
Where to now?
Edit: I think i have found the issue. I´ve had SuperSU installed and it was still in the system. So i reinstalled it and then opted to use another app.
Now i´m able to run SuperUser and update.

[Q] Camera issues fixed only 4.1.2 ota?

Hello,
I will try to keep this short. Was running 4.1.1 and rooted with moto2fail and installed safestrap recovery then I made a stock backup.
One day, my camera quit working (camera screen loads then a box pops up saying unfortunately, the camera has stopped) Anyways, I cleared data, rebooted same results. I didn't want to mess around with any files, so I decided to update to 4.1.2.
After the update, i get message that the update failed but everything seemed to be fine. AND the camera started working again.. Ending up losing root in the process, motochopper appears to install fine, but I get an error message when trying to update supersu. So, I reverted back to my 4.1.1 backup through the rp(?) tools in the stock recovery.
So now I'm back to 4.1.1 with full root, but no working camera. I can update to 4.1.2, but I think I'm gonna have problems with rooting again.
I did try reinstalling the stock MotCamera.apk from a stock razr m 4.1.1 rip. but it still fails. How can I fix the camera issues without having to mess around rsd lite?
Sorry about the confusion, just trying to lay out my issues and I will answer questions as I can.
i'm having the exact same issue, after failing to update to 4.1.2, i restored to 4.1.1 backup i had, but the camera just force closes. i'm on stock room.

It could be that the Update has updated the firmware of the Camera itself, causing it to now be incompatible with the older 4.1.1 drivers baked in.
Typically when I get into these types of scenarios, I always feel best doing something along the lines of an RSDlite wipe and start fresh. Do the update straight, then customize afterwards.
I would unlock your bootloader prior to guarantee you have a back door into the phone afterwards.
I can't rsd back to 4.1.1, i get a preflash verification error, the only thing that works is matt's new utility that flashes to 4.1.2, the camera works after that, but i want the camera to work on the backup I did when i was on 4.1.1 before the update.

I ended up booting in stock recovery by trying to get into fast boot, then selecting ap or rp tools(can't remember which). Truthfully, didn't even realize what it was. It loaded up what to me looked like the recovery menu with safestrap. Which I thought I uninstalled. From there, i restored the 4.1.1 backup I had. Then updated superuser and supersu from the play store. read in another thread to check and uncheck temp unroot in voodoo ota. twice.
Then I took the 4.1.2 update, was then able to install the supersu binary once it was finished and checked, and it kept root through the update. Camera works also. I still received a update fail message afterwards. But all appears to be okay, camera works, root checker says I have root, so all appears to be good.
I did make a backup of this in safestrap, and updated my backups in titanium, and froze a bunch of apps. Everything seems to be working just fine. I haven't unlocked the bootloader because I don't really feel like flashing any roms to this phone. Stock rom and rooted seems to be be good enough for me. For now.
If you still have a locked bootloader, you can't revert back without having issues. Once you've installed 4.1.2 and its boot.img, you shouldn't be able to restore a 4.1.1 ROM. If you are unlocked, then it's a different story.
For the OP, the best solution is to use Matt's Utility 1.20 and fastboot flash to 4.1.2. This utility does not require the use of RSD. After you flash, boot up the phone and just do basic setup, then use the Motochopper function in the utility to get root access. After you get root, then continue set up on the phone.

XXUAMDN or XXUAME2

Does anyone know which is newer, and what changed between the two?
I have XXUAME2, and I've updated my firmware through Kies. I don't remember what I had before. This one must be newer.
Haven't noticed any change, apart from the blue default background in the wallpapers is now a bit darker without the sun flare. I might've noticed a few very minor things in the settings, though I don't remember what they were.
Well I was on XXUAMDC when I first got my handset, and flashed XXUAMDN via Odin when getting root access. I found it removed any carrier branding and fixed a bug with the standard launcher not allowing sorting apps in folders properly. Just wondering if XXUAME2 is newer and fixes anything else.

I'll tell you a sad story about XXUAME2.
I rooted my phone a few weeks after I got it, everything worked fine. Then I saw the firmware update in Kies, sure I'll download! I already knew updating stock firmware would remove root, but I could always flash it again. So after I updated my firmware, I flashed root again. This time the phone couldn't recognise the superuser app, and kept alerting that there was a threat (meaning the superuser app) every 5 minutes but root still worked. So I removed superuser completely. The threat messages didn't stop, though. I flashed a clean stock ROM, everything was fine.
Until, an ancient evil awakens! (not really ancient, but...) My Group Play app started acting weirdly. It was constantly 50-70% of my battery drain, even above the screen, on my battery page. I freezed the app and hoped for the best, but it didn't work. I couldn't remove it because my root messed up. BetterBatteryStats didn't recognise anything odd. I asked XDA, but my thread only got 1 answer telling me to look for updates, and none were to be found. Google didn't tell me anything. So I gave up, and did a factory reset. I didn't really mind, I got the phone back running and looking the same in one evening, it's not as if I had years worth of stuff in it yet. This was 2 days ago, and everything seems to be pretty much normal.
I probably messed up somewhere, but thought I'd still write a cautionary tale about updating firmware while rooted. As I mentioned, probably nothing of importance was updated, so it would be a little safer to not update. You won't miss out.

The reason for that is chainfire's root method doesn't work for newer versions (or should I say didn't, apparently it does now). The newer kernel didn't allow root access, making the su binary appear to be missing. The error messages are also normal on newer versions, since it detects something is trying to get root access. To get around the missing binary issue, you can use djembey's modified version of getting root instead, which afaik installs the older kernel again so it can actually get root. Then to get rid of the repeated error messages, you have to disable KNOX. Again, it says how in djembey's root thread.
XXUAMDN is one of the newer versions which didn't work via chainfire's method, yet I have root access with no issues after following djembey's thread. Might be worth a look to get yours sorted.

Interesting, very interesting. I might look into rooting one more time, then. Thanks!
Funny how you helped me instead of the other way around. Thanks again, I hope more people notice your thread and maybe you'll get your answer!
where is this new firmware xxuamdn, havent found anything about it..
im having camera, battery drain, slowness issuess still hope it fixes..
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
I have none of those issues, but never did even on the older version. All I did was Google for galaxy s4 update and I found a download link for it along with Odin. But there's also XXUAME2 out there and I don't know which one I'd be better having. Unless the only difference is the radio depending on where in the world you are?

[Q] Nexus 7 update help

Hi Everyone,
I am currently running android 4.3(JWR66v) I flashed it using fastboot, so it is clean.
After that I rooted it and installed CWM v6.3.6 and BusyBox pro.
That is the only changes I did to my device, everything else is stock.
2 day ago I got a system update notification, looking in the cache folder I found this :
"8b2531d9d9a686c7dcf347513ce8141d59a251c6.signed-nakasi-JWR66Y-from-JWR66V.8b2531d9.zip"
I confirmed the reboot/Install but it failed with the classic (Status 7) I do not understand what is going on ?
Do I need flash my device again with a factory to get the update to install ?
I had the same setup since I bough this device last year and It had no trouble what so ever upgrading before(Unlocked+rooted+CWM)
This is supposed to be a nexus device but it sure doesn't act like one,
Can some one please help ?
Had the same problem going from 4.2.2 to 4.3. Same as you, stock rooted, but had TWRP as my recovery. I did go back to stock recovery, but no go. Ended up doing clean install. However, going from JWR66V to JWR66Y, I had no problem. Took OTA without even having to install stock recovery.
You must not be as stock as you think. My guess is you must have altered something in system that they are checking on. Hope someone with more knowledge is able to help you out because it is a PITA to have to clean install for every update. Good luck.

No root access, cannot update, no way to fastboot.

Okay guys, I need your help. I wanted to return to complete stock and update to newest version. So I downloaded a stock ROM and let it flash the stock recovery. I got a notification for 4.3 update and went ahead and flashed that sucker. During the installation, up popped "Error". It stayed frozen on that screen, so I hard rest it, and restarted my nexus. Well, the installation went through fine. Disabled super user and went about trying to force the 4.4.2 update. Sure enough that kicked in as well. Now, I also got the error on installation of that as well, but this time, when I rebooted, it was still 4.3. I've gone through it about 10 times now. And it gives me the error every single time and remains 4.3. I did a little googling and found out how to get there error log, and it says unexpected content in boot animation.zip.
Unfortunately one of my data pins is busted in my Nexus's USB port, so connecting to PC is not an option for me. Plus my PC is down for the count until I can get a new motherboard in her. Is there anyway to obtain root without connecting to a PC on 4.3 or at least get the update to take?
Is there possibly anyway to wirelessly adb from another android device? Would that even help in my situation?
I've tried " root master" and it seemed to work, even made the Chinese root permissions manager(as a system app) for me, but I can't grant access to anything, nor am I even give the option to. Also, when I tried that, it kicked SuperSU out of system and into regular old data apps.
I suppose I can just stick with 4.3, but if you guys could, I'd love some help.

What changed? Why could I root before, but not now?

I've spent a full day on this and no further ahead.
This is my wife's phone. A few months back (after Lollipop update) she was running into problems that I needed root to solve. I was lazy and tried Kingo Root and it worked on the first shot. Golden.
No problem but I screwed something up by being overzealous with deleting system apps and her cell data stopped working.
No biggie, I unrooted and did a factory reset and all seemed fine. But now I go to root it and... can't. Kingo Root fails.
Why?
But beyond that, I've followed every other tutorial on various other methods and every attempt ends in failure (stalls at startup screen, pre-animation. I've waited >1hr). I've had to reflash stock ROM several times.
In the stock bootloader under Check Root it says the bootloader is locked.
I've put on TWRP no problem, but that's what seems to stall the boot. I've read that TWRP is problematic with this phone and to use CWR (?) instead, but every link is dead, every tutorial regarding it is sketchy.
Advice?
