Used 16% battery over night - why and what to do? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
Just got my second G2 - the first one got exchanged, because of a bad battery and software errors. The second one is a lot more smooth in software, but battery life is still kind of bad.
This night, it lost 16% in 9 hours?! I have almost no apps installed, and those I have (Facebook) is greenify. I have some screenshots of different things, maybe you can see what's going on.
And maybe, can you tell me what apps, bloats and services I can freeze, remove or anything else, in order to get more then 3:30 screen time per charge, so I can get 4-5-6 hours, like a lot of you have.
Thank you
Tim

You have a pretty bad wakelock somewhere. Need to find out what's causing it.
Compare with these screen shots:
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.

Ok, I can see there is a little difference
What program can I use, to see what's causing it?

On the App Sucker screen, click on system and system(wakelock) lines. Out should give you a list of apps that are using the most battery. Try modifying their settings. Or, you could try a factory reset, and add things slowly until you find the offending app. Sometimes trial and error is the only way to find these things.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.

I use Wakelock Detector and its always been helpful for me.

Facebook may be your problem though

Another night is over, time for an update.
Yesterday my display time was 1:45,and I was down to 61% when I got to sleep. This morning, 10h later, the battery was down to 55%, better, but is that still to much battery usage?
Now, I've had the display on for 20 minutes, and the battery is down to 48%.
I don't know what to think, is it normal, or is there something wrong with my phone?
I'm rooted, so I could use greenify.
The only apps I have installed are Facebook, Facebook site manager, the xda app, dropbox, gsam battery monitor, greenify and wakelock detector. Both Facebook apps and xda app is greenify.
I hope you guys can tell me, if there's anything wrong, and hopefully how to fix it.

I'm back
Now I have used almost all my battery, here is some screenshots.
Can you, by looking at them, tell me what I can do, to get better battery life, and is able to get a higher screen on time? I can't figure out what to do, with the information provided here.

I am in WAKELOCK HELL

I'll start by saying that the attached pictures say it all folks.
I'm simply at a complete loss as to how my phone can be so awake ALL the time.
If anybody could give me ANY insight as to why it might be the case, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
Also, I can post my alarmdump.txt if anybody wants to see it.
Again, any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask me for any more info that might be of use in diagnosing the problem.
That NYC map app seems to be the culprit. As well as the Google Search widget, for some reason.
Uninstall the app, remove the widget, reboot and see if it's much better
Phones with insomnia... now I've seen it all.

lol bro well only about 30 minutes of that time the screen was on and I was doing stuff.
Thanks for the insights so far bros.
I'll say that I actually DO NOT have the google search widget. In fact, the only widgets I have are a watchdog widget and SwitchPro lockscreen button widget.
I'll keep investigating.
Thank you guys for the quick responses.

Well I've frozen the default ADW launcher that CM7 comes with. I'm pretty sure I took off all homescreen icons and widgets before I switched the default to Zeam.
Does anybody know if freezing the Modem Fastdormancy element in Titanium Backup would cause any problems?
Please help me fellas.

im also curious about modem fastdormancy... i froze it because it was a wakelock culprit, but am getting really fast battery drain as well. not sure exactly what modem fastdormancy does tho

So basically, Modem Fast Dormancy = do not freeze. In my understanding, it has to do with the radio and disabling it when not in use, or something to that affect. I haven't studied it, but that's a quick 10 second synopsis from reading that article. I would stay away from disabling it.

Right on. And thanks for the info.
When I froze ADW I also UNfroze Fastdormancy, and then rebooted, so hopefully that'll help.
What about the wakelocks for Event Log Services?
Does anybody know if there's a way to find out exactly what that is, and if there's anything I can do about it?
Thanks for the input so far guys I REALLY appreciate, and little by little I think things are working out.
You're showing 27 hours there..................many people struggle to get 1/2 of that. I am one of the few who gets 28-30 hrs from full charge with moderate usage. I think it's fair to say you have fairly decent battery life, even with only low usage. I wouldn't complain too much.................just keep trying to make it better!

The thing is, he might have good battery life compared to others but his screen was barely on, he shouldn't be having all those wake locks. I have a similar amount too. If we could get this settled our 1 day battery life might turn into 2 days which would be amazing. I'm sure many people's phones are like this.

Yup bro this is exactly it.
It might be good battery life- but I'm not using my phone at all.
After unfreezing Modem Fastdormancy I've definitely got less unexplained blue in the "awake" time graph. I also froze ADW and that seemed to help.
Thing is, there is still lot of mysterious chunks when my phone is awake.
BetterBatteryStats says Alarm Manager and Event Log services are to blame (top two- represent a substantial percentage of the partial wakelocks and thus time awake).
I'm about to terminal emulator dumpsys my alarmdump.txt, but is there a similar solution for Event Log Services that will allow me to see EXACTLY what's putting it at the top? Only clue it gives is that it's apparently "Google Services."
Past that I've got no clue what it's pointing to.
If I get the Event Log Services fixed, I'd venture to say that would solve a LOT of problems for me.
Thank you guys for everything so far. You laid out some really good and interesting ideas- ones that I definitely wouldn't have thought of.
I'm very, very appreciative, and if it's not too much trouble, bros, KEEP IT COMING!
Ultimately, I want OTHERS to be able to reference this thread in their quest for a better Atrix, and maybe even a better android phone in general!

Quick question bros:
If I get my alarm manager dump, will that have any or all of the things contributing to the Event Log Services wakelock?
Like I've been saying, it looks like all I need to solve this is some breakdown of the Event Log Services to see what's putting it at the top.

I honestly always had battery issues with cm7 keeping the phone awake. I switched back to Alien ROM an now my battery life is back to normal, around 42hours. I also saw great improvement when I uninstalled Watchdog while I was on cm7 and so thus I have never reinstalled it again.
Well,
Due to this post I checked my Atrix and saw that it wont go to sleep as well, and stay practically always awake. I started using AntTek App manager to freeze some apps that worked all the time (mainly Facebook and an israeli VOD app) and the phone started to go in sleep. I dont know how it will affect the battery life (which is about 16 hours from 100% to ~5%, with data always open), but I will test it for now and report once I have some news...
BTW Im running CM7-Ba2tF, with faux123 enhanced 1.0 Ghz Kernel, and UV.

Check the carrierIQ thread in general. Forget where the detailed play services one is, but if you use TB to uninstall the system play services and then reinstall it from the play store you get less wakelocks.
I installed CleanROM 1.1 on Sunday. Battery life on Monday was excellent. Monday evening I went ahead and disabled CarrierIQ because of the excessive wakelocks (but it didn't really kill my battery). What I don't understand is that BBS is reporting that my phone was in deep sleep when I wasn't listening to music through my headphones or bluetooth. So I don't really know what to make of it, because it was sitting in my pocket for most of the day at work.
Normally I'd still be at like 85% at least. I was hoping someone could shed some light because BBS is not reporting any excessive wakelocks that could drop my battery almost 50% in a 10 hour period with only a little over 10 minutes on screen time and an hour of music playback.
Android status can also shed light on run away processed. Outs in the play store.

Haha, even your "bad" battery day is still pretty good compared to me. I kind of think anything over 10 hours is good.
Right now I'm at 86%, that's 5:51 up, 4:03 deep sleep, 1:48 awake, 0:45 screen on. Which, yes, means my phone has spent over an hour awake without the screen on? Very sad.
One odd thing I notice is that it says I spent 42 minutes with No Data or Unknown Signal. I wonder if that's part of it being Awake? it kept searching?
Other than that I've got 11 minutes of NlpCollectorWakeLock for that 5:51 up.
I'm not complaining, those are still very good numbers. But I feel like lowering that off-screen awake time could take it from very good to great.

Yeah, you know what I never really thought about it like that. Though I *do* kind of have fun looking at my location dashboard in Google and seeing where I've gone and other metrics.
But you're right, its a huge hog (I'd say I get an extra 5-8 hours without it) and it isn't adding *that* much value.
I Greenify Facebook Beta and Twitter. And for some reason Google Keep keeps getting stuck in a sync loop, so I Greenify that too.
Think I'll clear data on GNow and see if I really notice the loss.

[Q] Help With Battery Drain

In the past week or so, I've noticed that my battery is draining unusually fast. I will take the phone to bed with me (I use it as an alarm clock) at 100% battery and I can wake up 7 hours later with it at 82%. When I look at my battery information, I see steady, solid drain over that time, with the biggest offender being Google Services. When I look in Wakelock Detector, I see the most usage (though seemingly not a ton) by Android System.
I found some tips on using Wakelock Terminator in Xposed to filter some things from Google Play Services from triggering wakelock, and I was optimistic, but it didn't seem to help.
Any advice?

Are you on a stock rom? Did you try greenify? It's on the play store. It kills the apps background services and the app itself until you start the app or the app is started by another app or service. Soon as the app os no longer needed it is turn back off. This program does not freeze apps it prevents them from running until needed.
Ah, sorry, I should have mentioned my rom and such. I'm running ForceROM, a relatively older version (maybe 2.3?), since I never felt the need to update.
I haven't tried Greenify. Haven't actually heard of that one before. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tip.

Try a custom kernel like KToonsez in addition to Greenify. It's amazing what you can end up doing with that kernel
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
ForceROM includes Ktoonsez kernel. For the last 8 months or so, I've had great battery life. This is a sudden and recent change, which I'm assuming to be caused by an update of some Google app (such as Play Services).
How do I use Greenify? Or do I just install it and it does magic?

I believe that installing Greenify might have done it. Battery usage looks much better today. I'll do a real test tonight when I get it charged to 100% before bed.
Well, I'll be...
I think that the problem is wifi. When I'm at home, I'm on wifi, and the battery is constantly draining. When I'm not at home, and on mobile data, the battery is well-behaved.
What's up with that?

Some apps can be setup to sync over WiFi only instead of 3G/4G data. but you have to check what apps would be the culprit. I know Google play, dropbox's picture upload feature can be set to download/upload/update over WiFi instead of data. But the only way to know is to see what apps connect over WiFi.
WiFi is suppose to give you better battery life since its signal is usually nearby and your phone doesn't have to use more power to find a better signal like it does with 3g/4g. I know for me it does since there are very few towers in the middle of the dessert.

So, interesting twist to this saga. Leaving wifi off takes away the solid blue bar on the battery screen, but I still see the same level of battery drain (about 18% overnight). Very intriguing.

Sounds like you're losing power to things syncing over wifi. Maybe try just giving it a week and watching it to see if it settles down. Google play sometimes settles down on its own. I also vote to check out greenify. With the donation package you can work wonders at calming down power hungry apps, even system apps.

Honestly there are a few days where the battery life suddenly drops dramatically. I've experienced this on unrooted mf9, mk2, and nae. Give it some time and see if battery life comes back up. You can reboot the phone to kill a rouge app that might be the cause.

There definitely do seem to be days where battery is worse than others. And I do typically try to reboot when I see it acting too squirrelly. I'll just keep keeping an eye on it. Weird-ass phone...

If you don't see anything unusual after a few hours of using GSAM/BBS, no extreme wake locks or times held awake, I would then do a factory reset and see if the problem continues, if it does then you may have a bad battery and it will need to be replaced, it is not difficult to do, a simple YouTube search will show you tons of examples of how to do it.
If that isn't it, although it is rare, you would have bad hardware and need to get the device serviced or replaced.

Download and install from the playstore the app Wakelock detector, let your N4 get to 100% in battery and unplug it and try to use it as usual. When it reaches 10 or 5% take a screenshot of wakelock detector and post it here. Try also to take a screenshot of GSAM or Betterbatterystats.

Kernels and roms make very little difference. It's how you use the device and the wake locks you get. Without something like gsam or bbs it's only a guess what's causing the issues.

this, absolutely right. battery life depends on how you personally use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you have installed, and mostly on the quality of the phone/data connection that you have.
İ dont think its a software problem guys.My newest stats: http://i.hizliresim.com/rLNLAB.png
Any calibrating suggestions?
We need more detailed information than this to troubleshoot this... Without that information we can't really help. We need screen shots of Wake lock Detector, BBS, or GSAM. GSAM is the easiest to interpret, so shots of the main screen, app sucker set to time held awake, screen and radio would be needed to assist further, in English if possible.

As i told,everything looks fine.
Everything does not look fine...Two things that's bothering me looking at this is the GSAM shot, it is showing you drawing 1500+ma off the battery... Seems very excessive, I usually see 350-900ma at most (433ma at moment). And the 41% of usage by the screen in just over an hour use seems kinda high, what is your screen brightness set at, and what does the GSAM Screen usage screen say, anything in the Medium or higher category is using very significant battery.

"Calibrate" is a misnomer, it will not affect battery life or current draw, years ago in the Froyo/Gingerbread days you would wipe the battery calibration file to reset the display and estimated run-time remaining, it doesn't affect actual battery use or life, just how it is displayed and runtimes are calculated. You can always download a Battery Calibration app from the Play Store and use it, it won't hurt anything but I believe most require root access. I have seen some discussion that this is irrelevant in KitKat since the file is rebuilt on each boot, but I can't verify that.
Honestly though, when I look at your GSAM screen with 2:40 average screen time and just over 3 hours max, this part doesn't look unusual, but it doesn't jive with the screen shot showing 1:19 screen time using 42% of the battery... you are at 12% after 10.5 hours, the phone is obviously sleeping properly (only 28min held awake over 10+ hours is quite good), but at the same time you are showing 5%+ per hour drain. A little puzzling but not outside of the realm of normal.
I'm not really sure what else to say, every phone is different, this may be normal for your device, without screen shots of app sucker and screen usage in GSAM I can't really say anymore... try the standard stuff like switch to Device Only in location services to stop Google Play Services drain, lock the screen brightness at 20-30%, disable syncs, etc.
Of course, this could be something in hardware too... I had a Samsung once that no matter what would drain 5-10% per hour well sleeping even in airplane mode, yet no one else in the forums ever commented that theirs did, turned out it was just a lemon, a replacement would drain less than 1% per hour.

App 10037 battery drain

Hello, I've had this phone pretty much since release. I've never had any problems with battery life on it, I would typically get 5-6 hours of screen on time since I'm not that heavy of a user. Recently, however, I have not been getting very good battery life at all. My phone drains a lot, even while it should be sleeping. I checked the battery usage report and the first thing on the list just says 10037. I click on it and cannot force stop or anything and it doesn't provide me with any additional information. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a way to figure out what this is or if any has had any issues with this is as well and found a fix. I haven't really done anything new to the phone that I can think of. I posted the screen shot of my batter usage. Thanks.

It's an app that was previously uninstalled. If you restart the phone and recharge it should disappear.

I haven't uninstalled any apps that were number 1 on my list, though, that's why I'm confused. This puppy is showing that's it's using a lot of battery lol.
Just try it. I've encountered a lot of this on other forums. Fix was always the same.

I'm in the process of trying it lol. But I don't think it hurts trying to get more information while the phone is charging. I've given it a google and couldn't find it on other forums, which is why I made a post asking. I did see a lot of people that posted their battery logs from their rooted apps saying an id of the deskclock was 10037. So I wasn't sure if that was draining my battery for some odd reason after the update a couple weeks ago.
