[Q] BBM and the Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had BBM for a little over a day now, and I've noticed my battery draining much quicker than without BBM. Any other users experiencing this? Additionally, how do you guys find the performance of your phone with BBM running? I'm not sure if I'm just thinking it, but I'm noticing a bit of sluggishness since the app can take up to 100mb of RAM when running in the background.

Yes i noticed too, but with note 3's amazing battery life, i couldn't care less for a little drain, the bbm app is so nice to use and it's worth the wait for me.

Inconsistant battery life

Has anyone else noticed inconsistant battery life with their phone?
Yesterday it was 1 day and 15 hours with 3% remaining.
Today it is 13 hours with 9% remaining.
Roughly the same usage. Any ideas why this may happen?

I seem to have the same problem.
I'm on Litening 6.1, using Rage 1.1b.
Im using Cognition 1.5.1 with SpeedMod kernel.

Mine only takes 10/12h per day... =\
I´m going to buy another one, to have one for backup...
This has been happening. Since. Day one for me, ive learned to live with it

I run only stock roms, rooted and with some tweaks I do need.
I limit the number of Homescreens to 3 - 6
I limit the widgets to 1-3 and only choose non bleeding ones
I don't install any useless resident programs like task killers, battery optimizers...
I use larger delays for exchange servers and weather/apps updates
I don't keeps my GPS and Wifi on all the day 24/24
I use quick settings to disable 3G when I don't use it
-------> Like many, I never had issues with battery life since the early official roms of this phone (I got one from the first stocks in Switzerland)
Widgets, resident programs, wifi and 3G are the main causes of battery inconsistancy. On low signals, Wifi and 3G will bleed the battery much more than when on good signals. Also, background activities will use the data connections on some intervals leading to variations in battery bleeding.
Using custom ROMs is not always safe and many expierience random bugs. A custom ROM will never be debugged at a large level as stock ROMs, keep this in mind (less than hundreds of users vs tens of thouthands users for stock ROMs). Also, speed boosted ROMs will sacrifice battery life. So, use them at your own risk and only when you need some special functions in them you can't get via other applications.
Finally, using dark backgrounds and a short screen off delay will help you improve battery life.
Some issues could be hardware/OS based, sure, but most people suffering from these random issues are using many widgets, 24/24 crap processes and custom ROMs.
One of the worst issues is a random and rare bug with the screen not going off. I also have the issue with teh SGS 1. If it happens at night or in your pocket, your battery is drained... This is one issue I find inacceptable for the phone to be reliable
Try to run your phone stock, rooted, and use above hints before criticising the hardware.
It really depends on the way you used it. It is practically impossible that the battery drains at inconsistant speeds for no reason. Next time before starting a thread, troubleshoot and find out the reason that you are facing such a problem. You have to approach this problem in a very systematic way so that you can isolate the cause of the problem.
Here are my suggestions:
-Stop running widgets one by one and observe battery life.
-Uninstall programs one by one in the reverse order of date you installed, wait for half a day anf observe battery life after uninstalling.
-sometimes its your actions that causes the problem. observe during your days of good batterylife what is different compared to days of poor batterylife.
It is impossible to list down everything but the general idea is to systematically pin point whats the cause of poor battery life.
Help us to help you by giving us more information. : )

Please explain!!!

Ive had a few questions when it comes to my trial with samsung devices and this is where my story starts..
So I have had a mirage of Samsung devices starting with the Note 2, to the Galaxy s4, and now currently the Note 3. I have put as much time and effort as my noob abilities will allow me to and I'm honestly trying to figure out a couple of things. Throughout all these devices in less than one year I have realized that I can only get my battery to supply modest results. I have torn through xda and have done almost every solution out there to in order to increase my battery life. With no impacting results I sit here truly wondering how is it that people can really get more than a day out of these phones. I have honestly never been able to get any of these phones to 5-6 hours screen on time and more than 24 hours off the charger. I evny the people that swear they are heavy users and still get great battery life, but I just dont see how this is possible from my experience...
I would say on a normal day i use the device moderatly and somewhat carefully as to retain the battery life to the fullest. I normally have my phone on WiFi for about half the day but I do browse and do a bit on LTE too. I use all kinds of social apps (twitter, instagram, fb, hangouts for sms, etc) that are all using push notifications. I have a university email that uses exchange and that is push as well. I stream all my music using Google play music daily but also a lot on WiFi. I search the web a lot and use flipboard constantly. I hardly use any games except at home when I know I have my charger. So one of my questions is, does this classify me as a heavy user comparing to all of you people?
I have tried almost everything.. Wake lock detector, turning off absolutely everything location based, app ops, power saver for when I'm at work (8+ hours), turning off all the smart features, low brightness, turning off bloat, etc. But still nothing too spectacular for results. Keep I'm mind I'm all stock and for now I dont really want to change that. So my main question after that long story is, am I missing something? Should I be getting better battery life after all these attempts? Is my battery life ok for how I use my phone? Are there any other options so I can be like the people getting monster battery life?
What made me write this post is because I was at BestBuy and one of the Samsung reps had the same Verizon note 3 that I have. I asked him if I could see his battery stats (which he did not know how to find.. Wow) and his phone had been on for over a day and had 7 hours of screen on time.. It blew me away that he was getting extraordinary battery life and obviously didnt do a thing to try to preserve it.
Keep in mind the battery stats posted are actually some of the best Ive had when it comes to screen on time so usually its dead after about 16 hrs and 3 hrs screen on time.

if your doing graphic intensive stuff on the internet it will destroy your battery. The fact your chrome used almost as much battery as your screen makes me believe there's something wrong there..
My chrome browsing basically just consists of normal web pages and some embedded videos on news and sports sites. Is that enough to cause that much damage?

It shouldn't. But just to be sure, whenever you're done using your phone at times you can go into task manager holding down the home button and click the clear memory button under the RAM tab. That will stop all processes from continuing to run when you're done using them

I would also consider giving chrome a break and using a different browser to see if you battery life improves. I'm currently using Boat Browser but there are several browsers.

Yeah I agree that something just doesn't seem right with Chrome using about as much battery as your screen. Try another browser, make sure you clear your recent apps, and turn off anything that you are not going to be using. I turn off all of the touch sounds and haptic feedback, as well as smart stay and air gestures, etc..I never really seemed to get the battery life that I thought I should be getting whenever I was on the Stock ROM.
Maybe chrome is the culprit but I do clear the ram and close apps all the time.. Its just frustrating that I'm trying everything and nothing seems to be changing much..

I personally like Firefox and Opera Mini, it's a matter of personal preference though. There are a bunch of browsers out there. I also use Battery Doctor and Clean Master to clear cache, junk files and applications running in the background. If your rooted you can download "Greenify" which would probably help you as well.

I have the Greenify Donation app, and love it. Stopped using Chrome because it was tearing my battery life down, using the Stock Browser and Boat Browser at times. Greenify also helps with some other apps that just keep running even though I didn't use them during the day. The only thing I have as an exception, is my Blackberry Messenger to communicate with my family abroad during the day and that app has been behaving nicely. Everything else, minus HD Widgets, has been Greenified, and I can go all day (unplug at 7A, plug back in around 9P with plenty of juice left.
So this is what I get after a long period using wakelock detector. Does anyone have any insight as to what this all means. What does the x538 refer to and how does this app show how it's affecting my phone? One is the CPU wake lock and the other is the screen.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
The 538 is how many times it has woken the phone up (wake lock).

Anyone experiencing faster battery drain on 4.4.2?

I updated to 4.4.2 a few days ago and am noticing faster battery drain. Just curious if anyone else noticed this?
Yup. Have tried factory resetting twice. Clearing cache. Disabling nearly everything possible. No avail.
Mine was draining a bit faster than normal after the update. I let it run all the way down, and charged it up, and it has been fine since then.
Hope it works out for you guys.

Yes mine is really bad. i even lowered the brightness. like it loses 1% every two minutes even though its screen is off. I gotta get Zerolemon battery or use SetCPU. Does any other 4.4.2 devices have battery drain?
Mine drains extremely fast but seems to charge just as fast

Ive gotten better battery performance since setting up Battery Guru and disabling all app refresh unless I open them. Still seeing very fast battery drain, but it's definitely improved.

Camera bug = Battery Drain
Did some looking around, and it appears to be a bug related to the camera (i know, sounds a little odd).
Here's one link of many I've found regarding this issue...Samsung has acknowledged an issue and is working on a fix:
"cultofandroid.com/53672/google-vows-fix-android-4-4-2s-camera-battery-drain-bug"
I am thinking this is more regarding the ASOP camera. We don't have that file or app that they say to look for.

I posted this in the 4.4.2 issues thread, but will post here:
EAS continuously running....I found this out as well after the update. I cant believe its low priority for such a major issue. I switched mine to manual just to be safe. I also found a major battery drain issue when surfing on the internet via LTE service.
Any way, I wanted to see if others could replicate my issue:
-Stock (non-rooted) S4 phone with the recent 4.4.2 update on LTE with 5 bars of service.
-I am using Chrome to surf the internet.
-I have Exchange and Gmail accounts. Gmail is set to PUSH and exchange is set to manual. (My hope is that having Exchange set to manual I avoid the EAS issue described above.)
-Majority of the boatware turned off
Scenario: While using Chrome to surf via LTE service I am literally able to see a 1% decrease in battery ever 2-3 minutes of surfing on the internet. Wifi is better, but still drains faster than 4.3.
Can anyone else try and replicate and respond back? I may have to do a hard reset to see if it will remedy the issue. :-/
Thanks,
Eric
My battery life has been exponentially better since enabling battery guru. Use inactivity power boost to disable all app refresh after 15 minutes of inactivity. Set everything to manual refresh.

Yes I have had worse battery drain with the KitKat update. Hoping for an AT&T update since we dont have the option to flash roms...
What are you actually seeing for battery consumption?
I have google+ at the top of the list with >30% use. Definitely new after 4.4.2 update.
Seemed to be ok for a day and then popped back up. I'm going to try to see if it's caused by 1st use of the camera.

I'm not using live wallpapers.
Rebooting the phone and avoiding use of the camera did not help.
I uninstalled all google+ updates that that has worked so far, but definitely not a long term solution.
Well I would up flashing the MK2 revert, then changed my mind and re-updated to NB1 (these two processes involved many full-wipes and even flashing a .pit file). Installed all my apps one-by-one. I'm now getting better battery life. Still higher than previous usage by Android System (usually ends up being 14-17%).
NB1 now works pretty damn well for me. Once we get root I will be able to disable some stupid things like the boot sound and charger connection sound, along with a few apps that just don't need to be running like Knox and Security Policy Updates...

[Q] Heating problem

Hey guys I have just now upgraded from grand 1 to 2. I am noticing that the phone heats up a lot with slightly higher use of 3g or playing a game even for just 2 mins. Any of you have a solution to this heating problem?
I have also noticed that the RAM is always above 0.9 GB of use. This maybe due to the heavy touchwiz so just need a confirmation. Also I have upgraded to android 4.4.2 and the heating still exists. Any help is much appreciated.

Massive battery gains using ART. 100% improvement!

Hey you guys, i bought my galaxy S5 SM-G900H about 2 weeks ago and loved absolutely everything from the phone except the battery life. Coming from an Htc One Max and a OnePlus One I was used to be getting 24+ hours of battery life and with the S5 I was getting 12-15 hours tops. Im kind of a heavy user, I take pictures a lot ane constantly use wifi and my 4G data connection.
Well, to make a long story short, I tried enabling ART in my phone and now im getting 26-28 hours of battery life!! Im using the stock touchwiz rom that came with the phone and im not using any battery saver app of any sort. In other words im completely stock.
I find this improvement to be a massive one and I strongly suggest you try it.
P.S. btw everythings running smoothly with ART on my phone, no crashes whatsoever.

Something i'd overlooked, i'll give it a whirl.
I have ART enabled few weeks back, definitely improvement on battery life but have minor issues with some of the apps and experiencing a little bit of lag on my phone.
I hadn't even heard of ART until today, so I went and google'd it. I'll give it a try for a while and see how it goes. Thanks for the heads up on performance!
Actually found a negative effect since enabling ART, i usually get around a day and a half up to two days and enabling ART made it go the other way, have reverted back to Dalvic. Different strokes i suppose.

Thanks for the post. Contrary to the previous poster's opinion, which is factually mistaken, ART is well known to improve battery life. There are numerous threads that concur with the OP's experience and even Google cites that as one of the reasons that they are transitioning the Android OS to use ART instead of Dalvik as the primary cache method in the future.
At this time, it's difficult to recommend ART to Qualcom device owners as there are a number of bugs and incompatibilities that make using ART an arduous experience. However ART works better for the 900H at this time and as the OP suggests it is well worth considering if you are using an Exynos (900H) device.

Using my 900f I had quite a few issues with art on neatrom. Went back to dalvik and all good. Also started to use exposed so art isn't a viable option.
Getting about 12-18 hours fairly heavy use. More would be good but I charge nightly anyhoo.
